Divide 72 by the account’s APY percentage for a quick estimate of how many years a lump sum would take to double: 4% suggests about 18 years, while 5% suggests about 14.4 years. That estimate is useful only if the rate stays unchanged and you neither add nor withdraw money.
A sound comparison goes further. Check whether the APY is variable or promotional, the balances required to earn it, fees, compounding and crediting rules, withdrawal limits, and the institution’s deposit-insurance status. A slightly higher advertised APY can produce a worse result if it is difficult to qualify for or expensive to use.

What doubling time tells you that APY does not
APY is a percentage; doubling time is a schedule. Saying an account yields 4% may be accurate, but it does not immediately tell you what that means for a $1,000 emergency fund. Converting the rate to years gives you a practical time horizon for the growth of money left untouched.

Estimated years to double = 72 ÷ APY percentage
Use the APY as a whole-number percentage, not a decimal. At 3%, 72 ÷ 3 equals 24 years. At 4%, it is 18 years. At 5%, it is 14.4 years. These are estimates, not maturity dates or guarantees.
The estimate describes a one-time deposit that remains in the account, with a constant rate and no other transactions. The FDIC’s guidance specifically warns that changing rates and deposits or withdrawals alter the result. A variable savings account can therefore have a 14.4-year estimate today and a very different estimate after its rate changes.
Why APY remains the correct baseline
Do not replace APY with the account’s stated interest rate when comparing products. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Regulation DD defines APY as an annualized measure that reflects both the interest paid and the frequency of compounding. It provides a common starting point for comparing accounts with different compounding schedules.
For a typical account without a stated maturity, the Regulation DD calculation uses a 365-day term and assumes the principal and interest stay deposited with no additional transactions. Those assumptions explain why APY is comparable but also why your personal outcome can differ.
Compound interest means you earn interest on your original savings and on interest already credited to the account. The CFPB explains it this way: “Compound interest is when you earn interest on the money you’ve saved and on the interest you earn along the way.” The APY incorporates that compounding effect for the stated annual period; the Rule of 72 then turns the resulting percentage into an approximate time.

APY is not a promise that a variable account will pay that yield for decades. It is the annualized result of the rate and compounding assumptions in effect when the disclosure is prepared. Treat it as the input to a scenario, not as a locked-in forecast.
Rule of 72 examples at common savings rates
| Stated APY | Rule of 72 estimate | What the estimate assumes |
|---|---|---|
| 0.39% | About 185 years | Rate remains 0.39%; no deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes |
| 1.14% | About 63 years | Rate remains 1.14%; no deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes |
| 2% | About 36 years | Rate remains 2%; no deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes |
| 3% | About 24 years | Rate remains 3%; no deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes |
| 4% | About 18 years | Rate remains 4%; no deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes |
| 5% | About 14.4 years | Rate remains 5%; no deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes |
| 6% | About 12 years | Rate remains 6%; no deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes |
The first two rows use the FDIC’s January 20, 2026 national-rate table: a 0.39% national savings rate and a 1.14% rate-cap-adjusted savings rate. They are benchmarks, not offers available to every consumer. The extreme time spans show why the account’s actual APY matters far more than a national average.
How to calculate a more precise doubling time
The Rule of 72 is a mental shortcut. For a constant APY, an exact annual-compounding model is:
Years to double = ln(2) ÷ ln(1 + APY)
In that formula, APY is written as a decimal: 0.04 for 4%. At 4%, the result is approximately 17.67 years; the shortcut rounds it to 18. At 5%, the exact result is approximately 14.21 years, versus the Rule of 72 estimate of 14.4.
Because APY is already an effective annual yield, you generally do not need to insert a separate compounding frequency into this calculation. If you are given only a nominal interest rate and a compounding schedule, first convert those terms to an effective annual yield or use the corresponding periodic-rate formula. Comparing APYs avoids that extra conversion.

What an exact calculation still cannot predict
- Variable rates: The formula assumes one APY for the entire period. A bank can change a variable savings rate, so the actual doubling date can move earlier or later.
- Additional deposits: Monthly or irregular contributions can make the account balance double sooner, but that is partly your saving behavior rather than the account’s yield.
- Withdrawals: Taking money out reduces the principal and removes future compounding on the withdrawn amount.
- Fees: Maintenance charges or other account fees reduce the effective growth rate and can be especially damaging to small balances.
- Taxes: Tax on interest lowers the amount retained. The Rule of 72 is a pre-tax estimate unless you adjust the APY for your own tax treatment.
A step-by-step workflow for comparing accounts
- Write down the current APY. Record the exact figure shown in the current account disclosure, not a rounded headline. Note whether it is variable, fixed, tiered by balance, or promotional, and record when a promotional period ends if one is stated.
- Convert the APY to a time estimate. Divide 72 by the APY percentage. Keep the result beside the account name so a list of percentages becomes a list of understandable timelines.
- State your scenario. Decide whether you are modeling a lump sum left untouched, a recurring-deposit plan, or money you may need to withdraw. The Rule of 72 applies only to the first scenario.
- Read the Truth in Savings disclosure. Check the minimum opening balance, the balance needed to avoid a fee, the balance needed to earn the advertised APY, the compounding and crediting frequency, the balance-computation method, and when interest begins accruing.
- Subtract the impact of fees. Identify monthly maintenance fees, excess-withdrawal charges, paper-statement fees, and any other recurring or conditional charge. Ask whether the fee can reduce your balance below the amount needed to earn the APY.
- Check access rules. Confirm how withdrawals and transfers are made, whether there are transaction limits, and whether a delay or penalty applies. APY comparisons do not capture every access restriction. For a certificate of deposit, also examine the early-withdrawal penalty before treating its APY as comparable to an easy-access savings account.
- Verify the institution. Confirm the applicable deposit-insurance status and coverage directly with the bank or credit union before opening the account. Insurance protects against an institution failure under the program’s rules; it does not prevent a variable APY from falling.
- Recalculate when terms change. Rates “vary by bank and change constantly,” according to FDIC consumer guidance. Set a review point for a rate change, a promotional expiration, or a change in your balance pattern rather than assuming today’s estimate remains valid.
Which comparison factors can outweigh a higher APY?
| Factor | Questions to ask | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Growth speed | How many years to double at the stated APY? | Turns a percentage into a time horizon for untouched money. |
| Rate stability | Is the rate fixed, variable, tiered, or promotional? How can it change? | A high current estimate is less dependable if the rate can reset quickly. |
| Balance requirements | What is required to open, avoid fees, and earn the advertised APY? | A headline APY may apply only to part of your balance or only above a threshold. |
| Fees and penalties | What maintenance, transaction, or early-withdrawal charges apply? | Charges reduce the amount that compounds and can erase a small APY advantage. |
| Liquidity | How quickly can you access the money, and are there limits? | An emergency fund may be worth less if access is inconvenient or costly. |
| Interest mechanics | How is the balance calculated, and when is interest credited? | These terms affect the disclosed APY and the timing of credited earnings. |
| Insurance and institution | Is the institution covered by the applicable deposit-insurance program? | Safety and coverage are separate from the advertised yield. |
How balance tiers and promotional rates change the headline estimate
Tiered APYs
A tiered account can quote one APY for one balance range and another for a different range. Before using the Rule of 72, determine which tier applies to your actual balance and whether the quoted rate applies to the entire balance or only to the amount within that tier. If your balance crosses a threshold, recalculate the scenario using the applicable disclosed method.
Promotional APYs
A promotional APY is a temporary assumption, not a long-term doubling plan. Calculate the promotional period separately, then use a conservative post-promotion rate for the remaining years. If the disclosure does not establish the later rate, do not present a single guaranteed doubling date; show the result as a range or state that the long-term date is not determined.
Variable rates
Most ordinary savings accounts can change their rates. Keep a record of the APY and date each time you compare accounts. A doubling estimate made at 5% is a snapshot of that rate, not evidence that the account will compound at 5% for 14 years.
Worked comparisons for real decisions
Choosing between 4% and 5% for an untouched reserve
Suppose two accounts have no fees for your balance and the same access terms. At 4%, the shortcut estimates 18 years to double; at 5%, it estimates 14.4 years. The nominal difference is one percentage point, but the time difference is about 3.6 years under the constant-rate assumption. That is a meaningful advantage only if the 5% APY remains available to your balance and does not come with a restriction you cannot accept.
Choosing a lower rate with easier access
An account at 3% estimates 24 years to double, while an account at 4% estimates 18 years. If the 4% account charges a fee when your balance falls below its threshold, or makes emergency withdrawals difficult, the lower rate may better fit money that must remain available. Model the expected fee and your likely withdrawals instead of comparing the percentages in isolation.

Comparing an advertised rate with a national benchmark
The FDIC’s January 20, 2026 figures of 0.39% and 1.14% are reference points for the national market, not quotes for your account. Their Rule of 72 estimates—roughly 185 years and 63 years—illustrate the cost of leaving money at a low yield, but they do not establish what any particular institution will offer or how long its offer will last.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the interest rate instead of APY
A nominal rate may omit the effect of compounding. Correct the comparison by recording the APY from the disclosure and using that figure in the doubling calculation.
Treating the estimate as a promise
The Rule of 72 does not lock in a rate. Label every estimate with the APY and date used, then update it after a rate change or promotion expiration.
Assuming deposits are part of the yield
Regular deposits increase the balance independently of interest. Keep two measures: the account’s constant-rate doubling time for the original lump sum and the projected balance from your deposit schedule.
Ignoring fees because they look small
A recurring fee is taken from the balance that would otherwise compound. Include the fee in your projection and verify whether maintaining a required balance avoids it.

Overlooking crediting and balance rules
Two accounts can display similar APYs but calculate balances differently or credit interest on different schedules. Read the disclosure’s balance-computation and crediting provisions instead of inferring them from an advertising page.
Comparing a CD and a savings account only by APY
A CD may have a fixed term and an early-withdrawal penalty, while a savings account may provide easier access and a variable rate. Put the penalty and liquidity on the same comparison sheet as the doubling estimate.
A reusable comparison worksheet
Create one row for each account and fill in the fields below from its current disclosure:

After filling the worksheet, rank the accounts on more than one axis: estimated growth speed, rate stability, cost, and liquidity. This prevents a single promotional number from deciding a product that you cannot use as planned.
When to update your doubling-time estimate
Review the estimate whenever the institution changes the APY, your promotional period ends, your balance moves into a different tier, a fee schedule changes, or your withdrawal pattern changes. A rate change requires a new scenario; it does not retroactively alter the interest already credited.
For a variable account, you can track an average APY over time, but that average is a record of what happened, not a guarantee of what will happen. Use the current disclosed APY for a forward-looking comparison and identify the assumption plainly.
The decision rule
Choose the account that delivers the best fit after you translate its current APY into a doubling-time scenario and test the conditions behind that number. A higher APY is valuable when you can maintain the required balance, avoid fees, accept the access rules, and reasonably expect the rate to remain competitive. If those conditions fail, a lower headline rate can produce the better real-world outcome.
