Same-day delivery is cheaper only when its complete checkout total is below the cost of buying the same basket in a store and traveling there. Compare identical items, quantities, substitutions and discounts. Add every delivery charge, tip, tax and allocated membership cost; for the store option, add the in-store total and your round-trip travel cost. A delivery fee by itself cannot answer the question. Prices and fees can change by retailer, location, delivery window and date, so the useful answer is the total for your actual order.
Use one apples-to-apples comparison
Start with the exact basket you would buy today. Record item names, sizes, quantities, substitutions and loyalty discounts in both channels. Online prices may differ from shelf prices, and promotions can be channel-specific. The Federal Trade Commission advises checking whether the app price is higher than the in-store price rather than assuming the two are identical.

Use the final checkout screen for delivery and the receipt or current shelf prices for the store trip. Fees, availability, thresholds and promotions vary by retailer, location, order and date, so a general percentage is not a substitute for your own basket. If an app substitutes a different size or brand, price the substituted item you would actually accept, or run a second comparison using the original item. Otherwise, the two totals are not measuring the same purchase.
Decide at the outset whether you are comparing a normal store visit with a normal delivery order, or a special situation such as a rush window. A faster delivery option can add a priority charge, while a trip involving an extra store stop can add miles and time. Keep those choices visible instead of treating them as invisible convenience.

The two formulas
Delivered total
Delivered total = delivered basket price + mandatory delivery, service and regulatory fees + optional priority or distance charges you choose + tip + applicable taxes + allocated membership cost.
The delivered basket price is the price shown for the selected items, including any online markup. Include a membership allocation even when a membership removes a delivery fee: divide the monthly or annual charge by the number of orders you realistically expect to place during that period.
Use the amount that will actually be charged, not a banner or search-result estimate. If the checkout screen changes after you select a window, add the amount for the selected window. If a fee is waived because the basket meets a threshold, record that threshold and make sure the store comparison uses the same basket rather than an artificially larger order.
Store-trip total
Store-trip total = in-store basket price after applicable discounts + round-trip travel cost.
Use the actual shelf or checkout price after loyalty savings. Then add the cost of driving, transit, parking, tolls or another round-trip method that applies to this trip. If you would combine the trip with another errand, decide whether to assign the entire travel cost to groceries or only the incremental cost; state that choice and use it consistently.
Interpret the difference
Delivery premium or saving = delivered total − store-trip total.
- A positive result means delivery costs more for this order on a cash basis.
- A negative result means delivery costs less on the measured cash basis.
- A result near zero is a convenience decision; keep the financial comparison separate from the value of your time.
A single result is not a permanent rule. Recalculate when your route, vehicle, membership, retailer, delivery window, basket or loyalty status changes. The useful question is not “Is delivery always cheaper?” but “Which option is cheaper for this basket, on this date, under these assumptions?”
What belongs in the delivery total
Item prices and discounts
Compare each app price with the store price for the same size and quantity. The FTC’s April 16, 2026 proposed-rule notice summarizes reports that online grocery orders cost 30% to 50% more than equivalent in-store shopping and that grocery items on delivery platforms averaged 10% more than in-store prices before platform fees. Those are estimates reported secondhand in the notice, not original FTC measurements; they should not be generalized to every service, region or current order.
Apply loyalty discounts in whichever channel offers them. If a coupon, sale or rewards price is unavailable online, include that difference rather than comparing an undiscounted app basket with a discounted store basket. Check whether the discount applies to the exact package size and quantity. A percentage-off promotion on one item does not establish that the whole basket is discounted by the same percentage.
Do not assume that a listed “store price” is the price you will pay in your location. Retailer systems can show different prices by store, and availability can force a substitution. Use the selected retailer and location shown at checkout, then save the date of the comparison.
Delivery and service fees
Delivery fees can change with the retailer, delivery window and order total. Service fees can vary with location and cart contents. A service fee is separate from a tip and does not go to the shopper. Eligibility rules can remove a delivery fee while leaving a service fee in place.

Record mandatory fees separately. This makes it easier to see whether a low advertised delivery charge is offset by a service or regulatory charge. If the checkout offers a fee explanation, keep the explanation with your notes because labels and amounts may change.

Optional and location-specific charges
Record a priority or faster-window charge only when you select it. Also check for long-distance, regulatory or other location-specific charges. The final checkout page is the authoritative amount for that order. If you are deciding between standard and priority delivery, run both totals instead of assuming the faster window is worth its surcharge.
Order minimums and qualifying thresholds can also affect the displayed fee. Do not add unwanted items merely to obtain a fee waiver and then call the resulting order cheaper. Compare the basket you genuinely need, or clearly show how an intentional larger stock-up changes both the item total and the fee.

Add the tip you actually intend to leave and all applicable taxes. Do not omit a tip merely because it is optional if it is part of your normal purchasing decision; instead, state the tip assumption so the comparison is transparent. If your normal tip varies with weather, distance or order size, show a range or run separate scenarios rather than presenting one number as universal.
Taxes can apply to items, fees or both depending on the order and jurisdiction. Use the taxes displayed at checkout and do not estimate them from the pre-tax basket when the platform supplies a final amount. The store receipt should likewise use the tax treatment that applies to the in-store purchase.
How to calculate the store trip
Measure the complete round trip
Use the distance from home to the store and back, including any additional driving between stores. If you normally pay for parking or tolls, add them. For fuel only:
Fuel cost = round-trip miles ÷ vehicle miles per gallon × local price per gallon.

A broader vehicle estimate can add maintenance, tires, depreciation and other costs attributable to the trip. Choose one method and use it consistently; do not compare delivery with fuel alone in one scenario and a full ownership cost in the other without explaining the difference. If you walk, cycle or use transit, use the applicable round-trip fare or incremental cost instead of forcing a car formula onto the trip.
Understand the IRS mileage figure
The Internal Revenue Service lists a 2026 business standard mileage rate of 72.5 cents per mile for January 1 through June 30 and 76 cents per mile for July 1 through December 31. This is an official business-use tax standard, not a consumer-specific estimate of the marginal cost of a grocery trip. It is not a claim that every household vehicle costs that amount per mile, and it does not turn a personal shopping trip into a deductible business expense.
If you display the IRS figures, label the applicable half of 2026 and keep them separate from your household calculation. A reader can use the figures as a clearly identified benchmark, but the preferred comparison uses the reader’s own miles, fuel economy, local fuel price and any parking or tolls.
Account for memberships without calling them free
A membership can lower a per-order delivery charge but still leave service fees and the membership bill. Allocate the charge across expected orders:
Allocated membership cost per order = membership price for the period ÷ expected orders during that period.

Use realistic usage, not the number of orders needed to make the membership look worthwhile. If your actual order count falls, the cost per order rises. Recalculate when the plan renews, prices change or your shopping pattern changes.
For example, if you expect fewer orders during a vacation or a busy month, increase the allocation for those orders rather than leaving the annual fee at zero. If you are comparing a membership with no membership, show both totals and include the membership charge only in the scenario where you would actually buy the plan. A delivery fee waiver is not proof that the membership pays for itself.

A repeatable checkout-to-receipt method
- Build the basket. List the same products, sizes, quantities, substitutions and loyalty discounts for delivery and the store.
- Capture the delivery checkout. Record item prices, delivery fee, service fee, priority or distance charge, taxes and your planned tip. Note the delivery window and any minimum or threshold that affected the order.
- Check shelf prices. Price the same basket in the store or from a current store listing, including discounts that you could actually use.
- Calculate travel. Measure the round-trip distance and apply your fuel-only or broader vehicle-cost method. Add parking and tolls.
- Allocate membership cost. Divide the monthly or annual charge by expected orders and add that amount to the delivery total.
- Subtract. Apply the delivery-premium formula and label the result as a cash saving or premium.
- Record assumptions. Save the date, retailer, location, delivery window, tip, discounts and vehicle inputs so you can reproduce the result.
Take a screenshot or save the receipt when possible. A later review can then distinguish a fee change from a change in basket size. If an item is unavailable, note whether you removed it, accepted a substitution or moved the item to the store scenario; changing the basket silently makes the arithmetic misleading.
Comparison checklist
- Same items, package sizes, quantities and acceptable substitutions
- Online item prices versus shelf prices
- Loyalty discounts and channel-specific promotions
- Delivery fee and service fee
- Tip, taxes and regulatory charges
- Priority, long-distance or other selected surcharges
- Membership fee allocated across expected orders
- Round-trip miles, fuel or full vehicle cost
- Parking, tolls or transit costs
- Delivery window and time saved, listed separately from dollars
- Date, retailer and location used for both totals
- Any minimum order or fee-waiver threshold that changed the checkout
How to value time without hiding the assumption
Delivery may save the time spent driving, parking, shopping and carrying bags. Keep that time separate from the cash calculation unless you explicitly assign it a value. For example, you might decide that an hour saved is worth a chosen amount to you because of work, caregiving or rest. That is a personal decision, not an objective delivery cost. State the hourly value and the minutes saved, then show both the cash result and the result after your stated time value.
Do not count the entire delivery window as time saved if you must remain available to receive the order. Compare the time you would actually spend on the store trip with the time delivery requires from you. If the delivery saves 35 minutes but costs more in cash, the decision depends on the value you assign to those 35 minutes; the cash result itself has not changed.
Why published percentages can mislead
The 30%–50% and 10% figures cited in the FTC’s April 2026 notice describe reports summarized by the agency. The underlying reports were not independently verified here, and the notice is a proposed-rule document. Differences in retailer, geography, basket size, membership status, delivery window, loyalty pricing and date can produce a very different result. There is no universal break-even order amount.

The FTC has warned that unclear or last-minute fees can distort competition and harm consumers. Its consumer guidance recommends knowing the total delivery price, what each fee is for and when it will be charged. Review the complete checkout before placing the order, especially when an advertised low delivery fee does not show the service fee or an item-price difference.
Published averages are useful context, not a substitute for a local quote. A 10% average item markup can be immaterial for one basket and decisive for another, while a 30% to 50% total difference may reflect a particular set of retailers or ordering conditions. Report your own measured total first and use broad figures only as clearly qualified context.
Common mistakes and fixes
Comparing only the advertised delivery fee
Fix: Use the final total, including service fees, tip, taxes, selected surcharges and allocated membership cost.
Assuming app and shelf prices match
Fix: Check the same item in both channels and include loyalty pricing.

Delivery has a cash advantage when the app’s item prices, fees, tip, allocated membership cost and taxes together are lower than your discounted store basket plus round-trip travel expenses. That can occur when the store is far away, travel costs are high, or a delivery promotion offsets fees. It is not established by the delivery fee alone.
The advantage is more credible when the basket is unchanged, the store price is verified, and the delivery checkout shows no uncounted priority, long-distance or regulatory charge. A distant store, paid parking or a transit fare can materially change the store-trip side, but include only costs that really apply to your trip.
When the store trip is likely to win
A store trip usually has the lower measured cash total when online item prices are marked up, the order carries substantial service or distance charges, a membership is spread over few orders, or the store is close and inexpensive to reach. Recalculate when prices, fees, vehicle costs or your route change.
The store option can also win when an in-store loyalty promotion is unavailable online or when a delivery order requires a larger basket to qualify for a fee waiver. That conclusion still depends on the actual checkout and receipt, not on a general claim about a platform.

Subtract the store-trip total from the delivered total. Keep a dated copy because prices, promotions, fees and membership thresholds change. If you want a sensitivity check, repeat the worksheet with standard versus priority delivery, fuel-only versus broader vehicle cost, and with versus without a membership allocation. Present each scenario separately so the reader can see which assumption changes the result.

How often should I redo the comparison?
Redo it when the retailer, location, basket, delivery window, membership terms, promotions, route, vehicle costs or fuel price changes. Save the date and assumptions so a later total can be compared with the earlier one.

Compare the same basket using the final delivery checkout and the in-store total plus complete round-trip travel cost. Include item-price differences, all fees, tip, taxes and allocated membership cost; show time saved separately and state any value-of-time assumption.
