If a funding gap remains, request written offers from at least three providers and compare the actual contracts—not an advertised “starting at” rate. The most important fields are the fixed or variable rate, fees, estimated payment and total repayment, when payments begin, term length, in-school options, hardship provisions, co-signer obligations and release rules, eligibility conditions, and servicing arrangements.
This guide is for U.S. students and families. Lender pricing and terms depend on credit, the co-signer, the school and program, and other underwriting criteria, so only an offer and its promissory note show what you would actually pay.

Close the funding gap with lower-cost options first
Private borrowing should cover a remaining, documented gap rather than become the first way you pay for school. Federal Student Aid recommends using federal aid first and speaking with your school’s financial aid office about other ways to meet costs. That office can explain your cost-of-attendance limit, whether the school must certify a private loan, and whether an adjustment or payment arrangement is available. See Federal Student Aid’s options when aid is not enough.

Federal loans also carry protections that private contracts generally do not match, including federal repayment plans, payment-relief programs and certain discharge provisions. If you later refinance a federal loan into a private loan, you may give up those benefits; review the consequences at Federal Student Aid’s repayment guidance before making that decision.

Set the amount you actually need
- Subtract grants, scholarships, savings, employer or military benefits, and what your family can pay without taking on unaffordable debt.
- Use the school’s certified cost of attendance and subtract other aid before deciding on a private-loan amount.
- Borrow only for eligible education costs and leave room for an emergency budget; a lender’s maximum approval is not a recommendation to borrow that amount.
- Record the enrollment period and expected disbursement dates. Interest can accrue before full repayment, so timing affects total cost.
Use an apples-to-apples comparison process
Different lenders may quote different amounts, terms or payment assumptions. A written worksheet prevents a low monthly payment from hiding a high total cost.
- Confirm the same principal. Ask each provider to quote the amount the school will certify, or compare a common principal when you are evaluating preliminary offers.
- Request at least three quotes. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) calls getting quotes from at least three providers a good practice. Its guidance is at Who can I talk to about my options for taking out student loans?
- Apply in a short window. CFPB says multiple applications can create hard inquiries and suggests completing applications within a two-week period to reduce their impact. This is guidance, not a promise that every lender or credit-scoring model treats inquiries identically. Details appear in CFPB’s loan-shopping guide.
- Put every quote in one table. Use the same borrowing amount, enrollment period, repayment start assumption and term when comparing payment and total repayment.
- Read the disclosures and promissory note. Treat the final signed documents as controlling, not a website estimate or a verbal statement.
- Test the downside. For a variable-rate offer, model a higher rate and ask how often the rate can reset and whether a cap applies.
- Save the evidence. Keep the offer, disclosure, promissory note, payment schedule and written answers about release or hardship options.
Compare the contract terms that determine cost and risk
| Comparison area | Questions to answer for every offer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Is it fixed or variable? What rate or APR is actually offered? For a variable rate, what index, margin, reset frequency and cap apply? | The rate drives interest cost; a variable rate can change the required payment. |
| Fees | Are there origination, late-payment, returned-payment or other charges? Is a prepayment penalty permitted? | Fees increase the amount you repay and can change which offer is cheapest. |
| Total cost | What is the estimated payment and total repayment for the same principal, timing and term? How much interest accrues before repayment? | A low payment can result from a longer term and substantially more interest. |
| Payment timing | Are payments required while enrolled? Are interest-only, flat or fully deferred options available? When does full repayment begin, and is there a grace period? | Earlier payments reduce accruing interest but require cash while you are in school. |
| Repayment term | How many years is the term? Can you choose a shorter term or make extra payments without a penalty? | Term length changes the monthly bill and lifetime interest. |
| Relief | What deferment, forbearance, hardship, death or disability provisions exist? What eligibility limits and interest rules apply during a pause? | Private relief is contract-specific and may be narrower than federal relief. |
| Co-signer | Is one required? How does the co-signer affect approval and pricing? What are the release criteria, process and lender discretion? | The co-signer is legally responsible and shares the credit consequences. |
| Eligibility and servicing | What school certification, enrollment, satisfactory-academic-progress, residency, degree or program rules apply? Who services the loan? | Failure to meet a condition can stop disbursement or affect repayment options. |
| Incentives | Is there an autopay or loyalty discount? What conditions preserve it, and what rate applies if the discount ends? | A discount is valuable only while you can meet its conditions. |
Evaluate the interest rate correctly
Fixed versus variable
A fixed rate stays the same under the contract, making the required payment more predictable. A variable rate can move with its stated index plus a margin. Ask for the index name, margin, first reset date, reset frequency, minimum and maximum rate, and any payment recalculation rules. Do not compare a variable rate’s initial quote with a fixed rate as though they carry the same risk.
Use the lender’s highest permitted rate to understand the contractual ceiling, then run a plausible higher-rate scenario in your worksheet. The scenario is not a forecast; it shows whether your budget would still work if the rate rises. Ask the lender to provide an amortization example at the current rate and explain how a reset changes both interest and payment.

Do not mistake federal benchmarks for private quotes
For Direct Loans first disbursed from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, Federal Student Aid lists fixed rates of 6.52% for undergraduate Direct Subsidized and Direct Unsubsidized loans, 8.07% for graduate or professional Direct Unsubsidized loans, and 9.07% for Direct PLUS Loans. These are federal rates for that disbursement year, not private-loan offers or predictions of what a particular borrower will receive. Look past “starting at” advertising
The rate shown in an advertisement may be available only to borrowers with particular credit profiles, terms or co-signers. Compare the rate in your approval disclosure, including whether it is an annual percentage rate or a nominal interest rate and what fees are included. A strong-credit borrower may qualify without a co-signer, while another borrower may receive a different price or no approval.
Calculate payment and total repayment on the same assumptions
For each offer, record the principal disbursed, the amount and timing of each disbursement, the date interest starts, the in-school payment choice, the repayment start date, the term, the rate, and every fee. Then compare the lender’s estimated monthly payment and total of payments. If the lender does not provide a total, add all scheduled payments and fees under the stated assumptions; do not treat an estimate as guaranteed.
- Accruing interest before repayment: With deferred or partial in-school payments, interest may build before full payments begin. Ask whether unpaid interest is added to principal when repayment starts.
- Term effect: A longer term usually lowers the required monthly payment but extends the period during which interest accrues. Compare a shorter term only if the resulting payment fits your budget in good and bad months.
- Fees: Include origination charges, late or returned-payment fees, and any other amount disclosed in the promissory note. Confirm whether a fee is deducted from proceeds or added to the balance.
- Extra payments: Ask how additional payments are applied and whether any prepayment penalty exists. If extra payments reduce principal, they can shorten repayment, but the contract controls.
Understand when payments begin and what happens in school
Private loans differ on whether you must pay while enrolled. Common structures include immediate full payments, interest-only payments, a small fixed in-school payment, or deferment until after leaving school. A deferment can preserve cash now while allowing interest to accumulate. Get the exact first-payment date, enrollment definition, grace period, and treatment of breaks or less-than-half-time attendance in writing.
Questions for the financial-aid office
- What is the school’s certified cost-of-attendance limit for this program and academic year?
- When will the school certify the loan, and when will each disbursement reach the student account?
- What enrollment or satisfactory-academic-progress status must you maintain for later disbursements?
- Can a payment plan, emergency grant, work program or other institutional option reduce the private amount?
Federal Student Aid says a private-loan contract should explain repayment terms, interest rates, fees, penalties, credit requirements and satisfactory-academic-progress requirements. Review those provisions before signing at Federal Student Aid’s guidance.

Compare repayment terms and flexibility
Term and payment choices
Ask whether the lender offers more than one repayment term and whether choosing a longer term changes the rate. Compare the payment at each available term with the total repayment. A payment that fits only because the term is extended may leave you paying interest for many additional years.
Deferment, forbearance and hardship
Do not assume a private lender must pause payments when you return to school, lose a job or experience illness. Private-loan repayment options depend on the lender and agreement, and lenders are not required to provide relief. Confirm the qualifying event, application deadline, maximum number or length of pauses, whether payments are capitalized, and whether late fees continue. CFPB explains the lender-specific nature of private-loan relief at Repaying private student debt.
Death and disability provisions
Some contracts address death or permanent disability, while others may leave the balance payable by the estate or co-signer. Locate the exact provision, documentation requirements and exclusions. Never rely on a general statement that a lender “may” offer assistance; ask for the controlling contract language.
Assess the co-signer obligation before anyone applies
A co-signer is legally responsible for repayment. A missed payment can affect both borrower and co-signer, and the co-signer’s credit can influence approval and pricing. Discuss who will make payments during school, what happens after graduation, and how both people will monitor the account.

Read release rules as a separate decision
Some lenders offer co-signer release only after a specified number of on-time payments and a new credit review; others may impose income, debt-to-income, citizenship or other conditions. Release can be discretionary and is not guaranteed. CFPB’s explanation of the issue is at Can a co-signer be released from a private student loan? Read the application process, timing, documentation and grounds for denial before selecting the loan.
Compare with borrowing independently
If you may qualify without a co-signer, ask for both versions of the offer. A co-signer can improve terms but creates a second person’s legal exposure. Compare the actual rate, payment, total repayment and release conditions rather than assuming that adding a co-signer is always cheaper.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check eligibility, servicing and administrative conditions
Approval is not the only eligibility test. Ask whether the lender requires a particular school, degree type, enrollment level, satisfactory academic progress, state of residence or citizenship status. Account for discounts and other incentives
Autopay and loyalty discounts can reduce the rate, but they are conditional. Record the discount amount, the account requirement, the date it begins, and what happens after a returned payment or canceled autopay. Compare the underlying rate without the discount so you know the cost if the benefit is lost. Do not allow a small incentive to outweigh a materially higher base rate, weaker relief provisions or a more expensive term.
Use this contract-review checklist before signing
- Borrower, co-signer and school names are correct.
- Principal, disbursement schedule and estimated proceeds match the school’s certification.
- Rate type, actual offered rate or APR, variable-rate index, margin, reset timing and caps are stated.
- Every fee, penalty and prepayment rule is identified.
- In-school payment requirement, first-payment date, grace period and capitalization treatment are clear.
- Repayment term, scheduled payment and total repayment are shown under stated assumptions.
- Deferment, forbearance, hardship, death and disability provisions include eligibility limits and application steps.
- Co-signer liability and release criteria are written, including whether approval is discretionary.
- Enrollment, satisfactory-academic-progress, residency and school-certification conditions are understood.
- Autopay or loyalty discounts and the consequences of losing them are documented.
- Servicer identity, payment address, customer-service channels and dispute process are available.
- You have compared the private offer with remaining federal eligibility and understand any federal benefits you would forgo by choosing private credit.
Warning signs that an offer deserves a pause
- The lender will not provide a complete disclosure or promissory note before you commit.
- The quote shows only a “starting” rate and omits the rate you would actually receive.
- The monthly payment is shown without the term, total repayment or assumptions about in-school interest.
- Variable-rate mechanics, caps or reset frequency are difficult to find.
- Hardship, deferment or co-signer-release promises are verbal rather than contractual.
- Fees, penalties or discount-loss conditions are unclear.
- The offer pressures you to sign before you can compare federal aid, another provider or the school’s alternatives.
Ask the lender to answer each unresolved item in writing. If an answer changes the economics or legal responsibility, update your comparison before accepting.
Make the final choice based on risk-adjusted cost
Start by eliminating offers you cannot afford under the required payment or a reasonable variable-rate stress scenario. Among the remaining offers, weigh total repayment, payment timing and flexibility—not rate alone. A slightly lower rate may not compensate for a large origination fee, an unaffordable in-school payment, no hardship option or a co-signer release process you cannot meet.

After you accept a private loan
