How to Compare Options-Implied Moves With a Bank Stock’s Historical Earnings Moves

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

To compare an options-implied earnings move with a bank stock’s history, divide the at-the-money call-plus-put premium by the stock price, then compare that percentage with consistently measured absolute moves from the stock’s prior earnings reports. The comparison is only valid when the option expiry, quote timestamp, report timing and reaction window are defined the same way for every observation.

The resulting percentage estimates magnitude, not direction. A larger implied move than the stock’s historical median can mean event-volatility pricing is relatively rich; a smaller one can mean it is relatively cheap. Neither conclusion is a buy or sell signal by itself.

What this comparison tells you

An earnings straddle combines an at-the-money (ATM) call and put with the same strike and expiry. Because one option benefits from an upward move and the other from a downward move, their combined premium is commonly used as the market-priced size of a potential earnings move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OptionsPro Academy describes the limitation plainly: the straddle indicates how large a move is being priced in “in either direction”; it does not indicate which way the stock will move and is not a promise that the stock will move by that amount. That distinction matters especially for banks, where earnings can be overshadowed by rates, credit-loss news, capital actions or regulatory developments.

A sound comparison therefore has two separate axes:

  • Magnitude: the current implied percentage versus the stock’s own historical distribution of absolute earnings reactions.
  • Direction: independent evidence such as earnings expectations, guidance, balance-sheet news, interest-rate conditions or order flow.

Keep those axes separate in your worksheet and in your conclusion. A straddle can answer “how much?” but not “up or down?”

Define the event and collect comparable option data

1. Record the report date and session

Start with the exact earnings date and whether the announcement is scheduled before the market opens or after the market closes. This determines which closing prices belong in both the current and historical calculations.

For a before-open report, the last regular-session close is the capture point and the report-day close is the first full-session reaction point. For an after-close report, the report-day close is the capture point and the following session’s close is the reaction point. Alphanume summarizes this convention as “priced at the close before, measured at the close after.”

2. Apply one expiry rule

Choose the first listed option expiry on or after the report date. Use that same rule for every historical report. Changing between a weekly, monthly or later expiry can add different amounts of time value and can expose one observation to additional catalysts.

Inspect the selected expiry’s calendar. Investor days, court rulings, central-bank decisions or other scheduled events inside the same expiry can inflate the quoted straddle beyond the earnings event itself. Mark those observations rather than quietly mixing them with clean earnings-only events.

3. Select the ATM strike

Use the strike nearest the stock price at the capture timestamp. Record the spot price, strike, expiry, call premium and put premium. If the nearest strike changes between observations, document the rule instead of manually choosing a strike that produces a preferred result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Preserve quote quality

State whether each premium is a bid/ask midpoint, last trade or vendor mark. Midpoints are often a practical choice for liquid options, but a wide spread can make the result unstable. Preserve the bid, ask, timestamp, spot, strike, expiry, open interest and volume when available so another reader can audit the calculation.

Calculate the current implied percentage move

For a same-strike ATM straddle, calculate:

implied_move_pct = (ATM_call_mid + ATM_put_mid) / spot_price × 100

Use unrounded premiums and spot data in the calculation. Round only the displayed result. The corresponding price band is:

lower_bound = spot_price × (1 − implied_move_pct)
upper_bound = spot_price × (1 + implied_move_pct)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Illustrative arithmetic

If a bank stock is at 100, the nearest-strike call is 3.10 and the put is 2.90, the straddle costs 6.00. The simple implied move is 6.0%, producing a 94–106 band. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a market observation or forecast.

Raw straddle versus a one-standard-deviation convention

Some services apply a one-standard-deviation convention rather than reporting the raw straddle percentage. OptionsMovement publishes:

expected_move = (ATM_straddle_price / stock_price) × 1.2533

The factor changes the displayed range. If you use it, label the convention explicitly and apply it consistently to the comparison. Do not compare a raw straddle percentage with a historical series built from the adjusted 1.2533 calculation.

Measure each historical earnings reaction

Use the same capture and reaction windows

Announcement timing Capture price and options Reaction price Reason
Before the open Prior regular-session close Announcement-day close The market processes the release during that session.
After the close Announcement-day close Next regular-session close The first full reaction session follows the release.

Do not substitute an intraday quote, an earlier close or a different holding period for one report. Those may be useful separate analyses, but they are not the same measurement.

Keep direction and magnitude in separate columns

For every report, calculate the signed return:

signed_move_pct = (reaction_close / capture_close − 1) × 100

Then calculate the absolute reaction used for magnitude comparisons:

absolute_move_pct = abs(reaction_close / capture_close − 1) × 100

A stock that falls 7% and one that rises 7% both have a 7% absolute move, but their signed returns remain −7% and +7%. Retaining both columns prevents a directional pattern from being lost when you summarize volatility.

Build a complete event ledger

For each past report, store at least:

  • Report date and before-open or after-close timing.
  • Capture and reaction timestamps and closing prices.
  • Spot price, ATM strike, expiry, call and put quotes, quote type and timestamp.
  • Signed and absolute stock moves.
  • Open interest and volume when available.
  • A note on extra days or overlapping catalysts in the chosen expiry.
  • Bank-specific events that could explain an unusually large reaction.

Including every report in the selected sample is preferable to showing only the observations that support a conclusion.

Summarize the historical distribution

At minimum, calculate the historical median, mean, minimum and maximum absolute move. Add percentile points when the sample is large enough to make tails meaningful, such as the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles. Also count how often the absolute move exceeded the current implied threshold.

The exceedance rate is:

exceedance_share = number of historical absolute moves > current implied move / number of historical reports

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

State the numerator and denominator, not just a percentage. For example, “3 of 8 reports exceeded the threshold” is auditable; “37.5%” without the sample size is not.

Sample-size choice

PrintEarnings uses the average absolute move from the last eight earnings reports as one benchmark. Eight observations can be a useful starting point, but a larger, consistently measured history generally gives a more informative distribution. If you use eight, say so. If you use more, show the individual observations and explain whether the event-window rule remained unchanged.

Do not treat the mean and median as interchangeable. A single takeover announcement, capital raise or severe credit-loss surprise can pull the mean sharply upward while leaving the median comparatively stable.

Compare magnitude, direction and event-window quality

Axis What to calculate How to read it Audit question
Pricing magnitude Current implied move versus historical median, mean and percentiles Above the selected center suggests relatively rich event-volatility pricing; below it suggests relatively cheap pricing. Were the same expiry, strike and quote convention used?
Direction Signed historical moves plus independent fundamental, news or flow evidence A straddle supplies no directional forecast. Direction requires a separate thesis. Is the directional evidence clearly separated from the straddle calculation?
Event-window quality Clean, extra days or overlapping catalyst Contaminated observations may explain an unusually large implied or realized move. Does the expiry include another scheduled event?

When implied volatility is above the historical center

If the current implied move is above the historical median or mean, options are pricing a larger event than the selected history typically delivered. Describe that as relatively rich event-volatility pricing. It is not, on its own, evidence that the stock should fall or that selling volatility is appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When implied volatility is below the historical center

If the implied move is below the historical median or mean, options are pricing a smaller event than the selected history typically delivered. Describe that as relatively cheap event-volatility pricing. It is not a standalone reason to buy calls, puts or the stock.

Consider the tail, not only the average

An implied move near the upper tail of the historical distribution creates a different risk profile from one near the middle, even if both exceed the mean. Report the percentile location and the observed range alongside the average. A current 6% estimate, for example, cannot be interpreted responsibly without knowing whether past absolute moves clustered around 3–4% or ranged from 1% to 15%.

Bank-stock controls and confounders

Extra catalysts inside the expiry

A straddle expiring after earnings may also cover an investor day, court ruling or central-bank decision. The premium can reflect all of those risks. Label the observation “extra days” or “overlapping catalyst” and consider a separate clean-event subset rather than claiming the entire premium is earnings-specific.

Corporate and regulatory events

Annotate capital raises, acquisitions, regulatory actions and unusually large credit-loss disclosures. These events can produce outliers that are economically different from a routine quarterly report. The cited material does not establish a universal bank adjustment factor, so do not apply one. Explain the event and show its effect on the distribution instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interest-rate shocks and macro news

Banks are sensitive to rates, yield-curve changes and funding conditions. A major rate move between the capture and reaction closes can dominate the earnings response. Keep the observation in the main ledger for transparency, but flag the macro shock and, if useful, present a clearly labeled clean-event sensitivity that excludes it.

Liquidity and strike selection

Illiquid options can show stale last trades or wide bid/ask spreads. Prefer liquid strikes, document the midpoint or mark and retain volume and open interest. If the nearest strike has a materially wider spread than an adjacent strike, record that fact rather than silently substituting a different strike.

A repeatable calculation workflow

  1. Confirm the calendar. Record the report date, release timing and the regular trading sessions used for capture and reaction.
  2. Choose the expiry. Select the first listed expiry on or after the report date and inspect it for additional scheduled catalysts.
  3. Capture the option chain. At the defined capture close, record spot, the nearest strike, call and put bid/ask, your selected quote (mid, last or mark), timestamp, volume and open interest.
  4. Compute the current band. Add the call and put premiums, divide by spot, multiply by 100 and apply the result to the spot price to obtain the lower and upper bounds.
  5. Repeat the same process historically. Apply the identical expiry, strike, quote and timing rules to each prior report.
  6. Measure reactions. Calculate signed and absolute moves from each capture close to its valid reaction close.
  7. Summarize. Produce median, mean, percentiles, minimum, maximum and exceedance count/share.
  8. Annotate exceptions. Flag extra days, overlapping catalysts, corporate actions, regulatory news, credit-loss surprises and large rate moves.
  9. Write the conclusion in two parts. First describe the magnitude comparison; then, separately, discuss any directional evidence and its uncertainty.

Spreadsheet layout and quality checks

A practical worksheet can use one row per earnings report with these columns:

  • report_date, timing, capture_date, reaction_date
  • capture_close, reaction_close, spot_at_capture
  • expiry, strike, call_bid, call_ask, put_bid, put_ask
  • quote_method, quote_timestamp, open_interest, volume
  • straddle, implied_move_pct, signed_move_pct, absolute_move_pct
  • event_quality and confounder_note

Before interpreting results, check that:

  • The reaction date is one session after an after-close report and the report session itself after a before-open report.
  • No row uses a different expiry rule or quote type without being labeled.
  • The strike is actually nearest to the spot price at capture.
  • Absolute moves are non-negative and signed moves retain their sign.
  • The exceedance count uses a strict “greater than” test, so a historical move exactly equal to the implied threshold is not counted as exceeding it.
  • Unrounded inputs were used for calculations and only displayed values were rounded.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Using the wrong close

Comparing an after-close report with the same day’s close as the reaction understates the event window. Fix it by mapping announcement timing to the two-row timing table above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing expiries

A weekly option expiring immediately after one report and a monthly option covering several weeks are different risk packages. Fix it by enforcing the first-expiry-on-or-after-report rule for every event.

Treating the straddle as a directional forecast

The call-plus-put premium measures magnitude. Fix it by retaining signed returns separately and adding directional evidence only in a clearly labeled second step.

Using only the average

The mean can be distorted by one extraordinary bank event. Fix it by reporting median, percentiles and the individual observations as well.

Ignoring quote quality

A stale last trade or wide spread can make the implied move look precise when it is not. Fix it by documenting bid, ask, midpoint or mark, timestamp and liquidity fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling a contaminated move “earnings-only”

Extra days and overlapping catalysts can enlarge both implied and realized moves. Fix it by flagging the event and presenting clean and contaminated observations distinctly when the sample permits.

How to write the final conclusion

A defensible conclusion identifies the current implied percentage, its price band, the historical median and mean, the percentile location, and the exceedance count/share. It then states the event-window quality and any major bank-specific confounders.

Use precise language such as “the options market is pricing a larger move than this stock’s selected historical distribution” or “the implied move is below the historical median.” Avoid turning “rich” into a short recommendation or “cheap” into a long recommendation. The comparison describes relative event-volatility pricing; a trade decision requires separate assumptions about direction, realized volatility, liquidity, transaction costs and risk limits.

Finally, state the quote convention and timing rule in the same paragraph as the result. A reader should be able to reconstruct the calculation from the reported spot, strike, expiry, call and put prices, capture date and reaction date.
