Compare the rate actually offered to you, how interest is calculated on money you draw, every one-time and recurring charge, the eligible-fund and loan-to-value (LTV) rules, repayment structure, renewal and closure terms, and what happens if your fund’s NAV falls. Use the lender’s current Key Fact Statement (KFS), sanction communication and fee schedule—not a headline rate—as the final comparison.
A loan against mutual funds is secured by a lien or pledge over eligible units. You keep market exposure while obtaining liquidity, but a falling NAV can reduce your borrowing capacity and may require a top-up, partial repayment or, under the agreement, sale of units. SEBI’s investor-education material describes these loans as interim-liquidity products for borrowers who expect funds in the near future; it does not make borrowing preferable to redeeming investments or using another form of credit. See SEBI’s Financial Education Part A for the general framework.

How a loan against mutual funds works
You pledge or place a lien on eligible mutual-fund units. The lender values those units, applies its margin or LTV, and makes a loan or overdraft available. The amount is therefore linked to the current NAV and the schemes the lender accepts; two lenders can offer different limits against the same portfolio because their eligible-security lists and margins differ.

- Current NAV: The collateral value moves with the fund’s NAV. A limit approved today can fall later even if you have not drawn more money.
- Scheme eligibility: Lenders commonly separate equity, hybrid and debt schemes, and may exclude particular funds or units. SEBI notes that lender lists vary.
- LTV or margin: The lender advances only a percentage of the eligible value. A higher percentage does not automatically make an offer cheaper or safer.
- Pledge mechanics: Redemption or transfer can be restricted while units secure the facility. The exact lien, pledge and release process is lender-specific.
Ask for the eligible-scheme list and the valuation method before comparing limits. A large sanctioned limit is useful only if its cost and margin-call rules fit your expected borrowing.

The comparison checklist
Record each lender’s answer in the same format. The following table gives the fields that belong in a side-by-side comparison; “not stated” means the cited public page did not establish that item, so request it in writing.
| Item | What to compare | Why it changes your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Offered interest rate and APR | Your sanctioned rate, its validity, and any APR shown in the KFS | A headline range may not be your rate. APR definitions and included fees must be clear. |
| Interest basis | Daily or monthly accrual, reducing or flat balance, and whether interest is charged on the sanctioned limit or only the amount drawn | For an overdraft used briefly or partially, utilization rules can outweigh a small rate difference. |
| Payment frequency | Monthly servicing, interest-only payments, principal instalments or a bullet repayment | Cash-flow requirements and the final repayment amount differ. |
| Processing charge | Percentage base (sanctioned limit or borrowed amount), minimum, maximum and taxes | A fee on the whole limit can be expensive when you draw only a small portion. |
| Pledge, lien and release charges | Creation, modification, de-pledge or lien-removal fees, plus depository or certificate charges | These can be payable even when interest cost is low. |
| Renewal and account charges | Annual renewal fee, statement or documentation charges, and taxes | An overdraft kept open for several years can accumulate recurring costs. |
| LTV and eligible schemes | Separate limits for equity, hybrid and debt funds; minimum holding or valuation rules | The same portfolio can produce different borrowing capacity at different lenders. |
| Facility type | Overdraft versus term loan, drawdown method and repayment schedule | Overdrafts can charge only on utilization; term loans may require scheduled principal payments. |
| Tenure and renewal | Initial tenor, renewal approval, notice period and renewal fee | Renewal is not automatic and may be repriced or declined. |
| Prepayment and closure | Part-prepayment, foreclosure, closure and lien-release conditions | A “no prepayment charge” statement should cover the exact action you expect to take. |
| Shortfall and default remedy | Trigger level, cure period, top-up options, notice method and liquidation authority | A NAV fall can force cash repayment or sale of units at an unfavorable time. |
Compare the rate and APR correctly
Start with the rate in your sanction communication, not the lowest number in an advertisement. Federal Bank states that the final applicable rate, APR, charges and repayment obligations are disclosed in its KFS and sanction communication. ICICI Bank says its specific rate depends on customer segment and asset category and reserves the right to revise rates and processing fees. Those statements mean a public range is an illustration, not a promise.
Do not treat every displayed “total” as an APR. SBI’s official schedule displays “Loan against Mutual Fund Units | 8.70% | 1.25% | 9.95%”; the captured schedule does not establish the effective date or define the columns as APR. Verify both points on the live schedule and in the KFS before using the figure in an all-in comparison. An APR comparison is valid only when lenders use the same calculation convention and include the same categories of fees.
Ask how interest accrues
- Is interest calculated daily on a reducing outstanding balance?
- Does the lender charge on the amount actually drawn, the sanctioned limit, or a minimum utilization?
- When is interest debited, and is unpaid interest added to principal?
- Does the rate float, and what benchmark or reset notice applies?
Federal Bank’s published product page describes a secured overdraft with interest on the utilized outstanding amount, calculated on a daily reducing balance and serviced monthly. That structure can be economical when you draw intermittently, but confirm the same wording in your own KFS. A term loan with a full disbursement can accrue interest on the entire principal from day one.
A simple utilization example
Suppose, purely as an illustration, you draw ₹1,50,000 for 90 days at an annual rate of 10.5% and the lender uses a 365-day daily-reducing calculation. Approximate interest is ₹1,50,000 × 10.5% × 90 ÷ 365, or about ₹3,884, before taxes and other fees. If the sanctioned limit were ₹4,00,000 but only ₹1,50,000 were used, charging on the full limit would produce a materially higher cost. Replace the illustrative assumptions with the exact day-count and debit rules in your KFS.
Compare every fee, not just processing
List charges in rupees and identify their base. “One percent” of a sanctioned limit is not equivalent to one percent of the amount drawn. Add applicable GST or other taxes to the amount you will actually pay.

Federal Bank lists a processing fee of 0.50% of the sanctioned limit, with a ₹1,500 minimum and ₹7,500 maximum, plus applicable taxes; it lists ₹1,000 plus taxes for renewal, a 12-month tenure subject to approval, and no prepayment or closure charge. These are that bank’s published terms retrieved on 13 October 2026, not a market standard. Its product page presents minimum-facility figures in different sections, so obtain the current minimum directly rather than relying on an unresolved web-page inconsistency.

HDFC Bank’s securities-loan information says pledge and de-pledge or lien-removal charges can apply to mutual-fund unit certificates. Its public page does not establish a universal amount; ask for the product-specific schedule before signing.
Check LTV and eligible-fund rules separately
Compare the percentage of NAV and the schemes to which it applies. Record equity, hybrid and debt limits in separate rows; combining them into one “maximum LTV” hides the practical difference.
Federal Bank publishes up to 50% of NAV for eligible equity and hybrid funds and up to 75% for eligible debt schemes, subject to its conditions. HDFC Bank publishes up to 50% against eligible equity mutual funds and up to 85% against eligible debt mutual funds, also subject to terms. These percentages are lender-published ceilings, not guaranteed approvals or evidence that one offer is cheaper. HDFC’s page does not state a comparable interest rate in the cited material, so compare its written offer rather than infer one.
Ask whether the lender revalues units daily, what happens when a scheme leaves the eligible list, and whether distributions, switches or additional purchases affect the pledge. Obtain written confirmation that every scheme and folio you plan to use is accepted.

Overdraft or term loan: match the structure to your cash need
Overdraft
An overdraft lets you draw, repay and redraw up to a sanctioned limit, subject to the agreement. If interest is charged only on the utilized amount, it can suit a short, uncertain cash need. Compare the daily calculation, minimum draw, monthly interest servicing, renewal fee and whether the limit can be reduced after a NAV fall.
Term loan
A term loan disburses a defined principal and normally follows a stated repayment schedule or bullet maturity. It can be easier to budget when you know the amount and duration, but interest may begin on the full disbursement even if some cash remains unused. Check part-prepayment rules, amortization, final maturity payment and the release timing for pledged units.
Do not compare an overdraft’s rate with a term loan’s rate until you have modeled the same drawn amount, days outstanding, fees and repayment pattern.
Understand NAV-fall, shortfall and liquidation risk
Your investment remains market-linked after it is pledged. If NAV falls, the collateral value can drop below the lender’s required margin. Depending on the agreement, the lender may ask you to add funds, pledge more eligible units or repay part of the outstanding balance. Federal Bank states that units may be liquidated if margin requirements are not restored or another default occurs.
The exact trigger, cure period, valuation frequency, notice channel and liquidation process are not universal. Read those clauses before borrowing and ask the lender to identify the numerical threshold. A lender that gives a higher initial LTV may leave less room for a market decline, while a lower LTV may reduce the chance of a forced response but provide less liquidity.
Questions to ask about a shortfall
- What LTV or margin level triggers a call?
- How many hours or days do you have to cure it?
- Can you choose between cash, additional units and partial repayment?
- How is notice delivered if you do not respond?
- Which units can be sold, at what valuation time, and who bears sale costs and taxes?
- Does a default affect other accounts or facilities with the same lender?
Keep a cash reserve for interest and possible top-ups. Borrowing against volatile assets without a repayment plan can turn a temporary liquidity solution into a forced sale.

A step-by-step way to compare offers
- Define the borrowing need. Write the amount you expect to draw, the maximum limit you might need, and the earliest realistic repayment date. Include a scenario in which repayment takes twice as long.
- Inventory your units. Record scheme name, plan, folio, current NAV, units and whether the lender accepts that scheme. Separate equity, hybrid and debt holdings.
- Request the same documents from each lender. Obtain the current KFS, sanction communication, detailed fee schedule, eligible-scheme list, pledge or lien terms and repayment schedule.
- Normalize the rate. Note the offered annual rate, whether it floats, the day-count convention, the balance on which interest accrues and the payment date. Do not relabel a displayed figure as APR unless the lender defines it that way.
- Calculate utilization cost. Model the amount you will actually draw, not merely the sanctioned limit. Add processing, renewal, pledge, stamp-duty, taxes and expected closure charges.
- Test repayment patterns. Compare a short draw, a partial draw and a full-limit draw. For a term loan, include scheduled principal; for an overdraft, include monthly interest servicing and renewal.
- Stress the collateral. Ask what happens after a 10%, 20% or larger NAV decline. Use the agreement’s trigger and cure period, not an assumed market rule.
- Check exit mechanics. Confirm prepayment, foreclosure, de-pledge and lien-release steps, timing and charges. Ask how quickly units become redeemable after closure.
- Compare the written offers. Choose based on total expected rupees, flexibility and the severity of default remedies—not the largest limit or lowest headline rate.
- Reconfirm before signing. Rates, fees and eligible lists can change. Ensure the documents you sign match the figures you modeled.
Documents and clauses to keep
- Current Key Fact Statement showing rate, APR if defined, fees and repayment obligations.
- Sanction communication with approved limit, tenor, interest reset and conditions.
- Complete fee schedule, including taxes and pledge or de-pledge charges.
- Eligible-scheme and LTV schedule for each fund category.
- Pledge or lien agreement and instructions for redemption, switch or additional investment.
- Margin-call, top-up, default, notice and liquidation clauses.
- Repayment calendar, interest-debit dates and closure confirmation procedure.
Retain statements showing outstanding principal, accrued interest and collateral value. They help you detect an unexpected fee or a limit reduction before it becomes a default.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the lowest advertised rate
A range may apply only to selected profiles or assets. Compare your written rate and all fees in the KFS.
Ignoring the fee base
A percentage of the sanctioned limit can cost more than the same percentage of the amount borrowed when utilization is low. Convert every percentage into rupees for your expected draw.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming the limit is fixed
The limit follows eligible collateral value. Monitor NAV and keep a top-up or repayment plan.

Treating “no foreclosure charge” as universal
Check whether the statement covers part-prepayment, full closure, renewal cancellation and lien release. Different actions may have different charges.
Comparing unlike products
Overdraft and term-loan interest cannot be compared without matching utilization, duration and principal repayment. Model the cash flow rather than copying the nominal rate.
Failing to resolve document inconsistencies
If a webpage shows conflicting minimum amounts or unclear columns, ask the lender for a dated written clarification and rely on the signed KFS and sanction communication.
When this facility may fit—and when caution is warranted
A loan against mutual funds can fit a short, defined liquidity gap when you can service interest and repay without depending on a rising NAV. It is less suitable when repayment is uncertain, the pledged portfolio is highly volatile, or a forced sale would disrupt a long-term plan. Compare the cost and risk with redeeming units, an unsecured facility or another source of cash; the existence of collateral does not make the borrowing risk-free.
The decision should be based on your repayment capacity, expected duration, total charges, collateral volatility and the lender’s remedies. Read the agreement’s operational details before pledging units, and obtain current terms because lender pages and prices are subject to change.
