There is no single best prepaid network across India. Choose by combining your telecom circle, the places you use your phone, high-speed data needs, validity, calling and SMS terms, 5G eligibility, and total cost. A ₹349 recharge that lasts 28 days is not automatically cheaper than a ₹579 recharge lasting 56 days, and a map showing service outdoors cannot promise an indoor signal. Use the method below to compare like-for-like plans, then confirm the live offer for your number and circle before paying.
Start with the five comparisons that decide value
Compare these items in order. They prevent the most common mistakes—choosing a low sticker price with short validity, treating “unlimited 5G” as a replacement for daily data, or assuming national subscriber numbers prove local coverage.

- Total price over validity: record the recharge amount and exact validity, then divide price by validity days. Do this only after confirming whether the recharge is a base plan or a data add-on.
- High-speed data: separate the ordinary 4G daily quota or total allowance from any 5G benefit. Check what happens when the quota is exhausted.
- 5G conditions: verify that your handset, plan, location and operator coverage all qualify. “Unlimited” is an eligibility statement, not a guarantee of speed or availability everywhere.
- Voice and messaging: read the exact unlimited-call wording, SMS allowance and exceptions. Do not assume two plans with the same data include identical calling benefits.
- Actual locations: check your home, workplace, commute and frequent destinations on each operator’s map, then seek a local SIM test or reliable local reports where possible.
Prices and benefits change by circle and over time. The examples below were visible on official pages checked on 13 October 2026; use them as comparison models, not as a promise that the same offer remains available.

#1 Best Overall
| Operator and example | Price and validity | Published data and 5G wording | Calling, extras and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio example | ₹349 for 28 days | 2 GB per day and unlimited 5G shown on the listing | Other bundled benefits appear on the listing; confirm current circle-specific terms at checkout. Jio prepaid listing |
| Jio long-validity example | ₹3,599 for 365 days | 2.5 GB per day and unlimited 5G shown | Annual payment lowers the nominal daily recharge cost, but confirm all included benefits and eligibility before purchase. Jio prepaid listing |
| Airtel example | ₹399 for 28 days | 2.5 GB per day; unlimited calls displayed | The listing also shows other data and validity combinations. A separate rendered page labels some packs “Unlimited 4G + 5G,” including ₹399/28 days and ₹1,099/84 days. Check the live offer for your number and circle. Airtel recharge listing |
| Vi Mumbai example | ₹349 for 28 days | 1.5 GB per day | Unlimited calls, night data and weekend rollover are displayed; entertainment benefits may apply to some packs. Vi 5G and prepaid offers |
| Vi Mumbai example | ₹365 for 28 days | 2 GB per day | Confirm calls, SMS, extras and any 5G eligibility in the current Mumbai checkout. Vi 5G and prepaid offers |
| Vi Mumbai example | ₹579 for 56 days | 1.5 GB per day | Circle-specific sample; verify current inclusions. Vi 5G and prepaid offers |
| Vi Mumbai example | ₹649 for 56 days | 2 GB per day | Circle-specific sample; verify current inclusions. Vi 5G and prepaid offers |
| Vi Mumbai example | ₹859 for 84 days | 1.5 GB per day | Circle-specific sample; verify current inclusions. Vi 5G and prepaid offers |
| Vi Mumbai example | ₹979 for 84 days | 2 GB per day | Circle-specific sample; verify current inclusions. Vi 5G and prepaid offers |
| Vi Mumbai annual example | ₹3,599 for 365 days | 2 GB per day | Annual sample; price and benefits can differ outside Mumbai. Vi 5G and prepaid offers |
For a simple cost check, ₹349 over 28 days is about ₹12.46 per day, ₹399 over 28 days is about ₹14.25 per day, and ₹3,599 over 365 days is about ₹9.86 per day. Those calculations describe recharge frequency only; they do not establish which plan has better coverage, speed, SMS terms or entertainment value.
How to compare data without being misled by “unlimited”
Separate the daily quota from 5G access
Write the plan as two separate entries: “ordinary high-speed allowance” and “5G benefit.” For example, a plan can provide 2 GB per day on the normal allowance while advertising unlimited 5G for eligible use. If your phone falls back to 4G, the daily quota is the relevant limit. Ask whether the 5G offer is a built-in benefit or requires a paid add-on.
Check what happens after the allowance
Read the offer terms for speed reduction, a stop in data service, pay-as-you-go charges or a data add-on requirement. Do not fill an unknown table cell with an assumption: if the current terms do not state the post-quota treatment, record it as “not stated” and confirm with the operator before recharging.
Match the allowance to your usage
- Light use: messaging, maps and occasional browsing may make a smaller daily quota and longer validity more economical.
- Regular streaming or hotspot use: compare the total monthly high-speed allowance, not only the daily headline.
- Heavy 5G use: confirm that your frequent locations have 5G, your handset supports the required bands, and the offer’s conditions remain valid for the full recharge period.
What “unlimited 5G” actually requires
Jio says True 5G use requires a compatible 5G device, an eligible plan and Jio True 5G coverage. Its eligibility guidance also notes that some 1 GB/day and 1.5 GB/day prepaid plans use specified add-ons to access 5G benefits; the available add-ons and rules can change. Check the current requirements in the Jio eligibility FAQ.
For any operator, verify four conditions before treating 5G as part of your budget:
- Your handset is compatible with the operator’s 5G service and supported bands.
- Your exact prepaid plan, or an eligible add-on, includes the advertised 5G access.
- Your home, work and travel locations are within the operator’s current 5G service area.
- The offer terms do not impose a fair-use, speed, device or validity condition that changes your expected use.
If any condition is uncertain, value the plan using its ordinary 4G allowance and treat 5G as a possible extra rather than guaranteed capacity.

How to check coverage where you actually use your phone
Jio
The Jio coverage map lets you search by address or PIN code and select 4G+5G, 5G or 4G. Jio says the map represents approximate outdoor coverage using a reference-signal threshold of at least -110 dBm for 5G and 4G. It is prediction-based, subject to external factors, and actual coverage can vary. The map displayed a last-updated date of 10 July 2026. Use the Jio coverage map for each relevant location.

Airtel
Airtel provides an interactive wireless map for 2G, 4G and 5G. Search the same addresses or PIN codes you used for Jio, and treat the result as a screening estimate rather than a promise of indoor reception or speed. Open Airtel’s wireless coverage map.
Vi
Vi’s 5G page provides a coverage check by circle and a separate device/model compatibility check. Availability is circle- and device-dependent, so check both before assigning value to a 5G claim. Use Vi’s 5G and prepaid page.
Turn map results into a practical decision
- Record the result for your exact home address or PIN code on all three maps.
- Repeat for your workplace, school, regular commute and places where you spend weekends.
- Look specifically at the band you need—4G for dependable fallback or 5G for high-capacity use.
- Ask people who use the network inside the same buildings, or test a SIM if that is feasible.
- Give greater weight to consistent signal at essential locations than to a slightly cheaper recharge.
Why subscriber totals do not tell you which network works best
TRAI’s Quarterly Performance Indicators Report for the quarter ending March 2026 recorded 1,282.33 million total wireless subscribers. Provider totals were 509.21 million for Reliance Jio, 481.48 million for Bharti Airtel and 198.48 million for Vodafone Idea. These are subscriber counts, not measurements of your local signal, coverage footprint, speed or service quality. Read the TRAI report.
The same report says 46.60% of Vodafone Idea subscribers, 42.87% of Reliance Jio subscribers and 40.42% of Bharti Airtel subscribers were rural at the end of March 2026. That describes each provider’s subscriber composition, not the geographic extent or quality of rural coverage. It should not be used as a coverage ranking.
Calculate effective cost correctly
Base-plan calculation
Use recharge price ÷ validity days. Then compare the result only among plans that include similar calling and data terms. A 28-day plan renews more often than a 56-day plan even when its daily price looks close.
Rank #3
Annual-plan calculation
Divide the annual price by 365 only when the plan truly provides 365 days of service. Also divide the included data by the same period if you want a data-cost comparison. An annual plan may reduce payment frequency, but it locks money into one operator and one set of benefits for the validity period.
Add-ons and secondary SIMs
Do not add a data booster to the base-plan price unless you actually need it and the booster’s validity overlaps as expected. Record whether the add-on extends validity or merely supplies data until the base plan expires.
A repeatable decision worksheet
Copy this checklist for each candidate plan and fill it from the operator’s live recharge flow:

Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Choosing by recharge price alone
Fix: calculate price per validity day and compare the included allowance over that same period.
Counting “unlimited 5G” as guaranteed data
Fix: verify device, plan, coverage and all stated conditions; budget against the ordinary high-speed allowance when any condition is uncertain.
Rank #4
Assuming one circle’s price applies nationwide
Fix: select your circle and enter the relevant number in the live operator flow. The Vi examples above are Mumbai offers, not national prices.

Using subscriber share as a coverage proxy
Fix: use official local maps and real-location checks. Subscriber totals describe market size, not your indoor signal.
Assuming extras are identical
Fix: verify calls, SMS, rollover, night data, entertainment and their expiry conditions line by line.

“I need about 2 GB per day”
Filter for plans explicitly showing at least 2 GB per day, then compare validity and local coverage. The Jio ₹349/28-day example and Airtel ₹399/28-day example show why the cheapest price is not the only variable; their daily allowances differ, and the current terms must be checked before purchase. Vi’s Mumbai examples include ₹365/28 days and ₹649/56 days with 2 GB per day.
“I want the fewest recharges”
Compare annual or 84-day validity, then check the effective daily cost and whether the annual plan’s data and calling benefits match your expected use. The Jio and Vi examples each showed a ₹3,599 annual option, but their daily data examples differ—2.5 GB for Jio and 2 GB for Vi—and circle availability remains decisive.

Start with the strongest local signal at your essential locations, then verify the plan’s calling and SMS terms. A lower data quota can be acceptable if it avoids paying for unused data, but do not infer voice reliability from subscriber totals.

“I want 5G at home and on my commute”
Check the operator map at both locations, confirm handset compatibility and read the plan’s 5G eligibility. If either location lacks service, compare the plans using their 4G allowances instead.
Before you press Recharge
- Confirm the operator, circle, number and exact plan name.
- Capture the displayed price, validity, daily data, calls, SMS and extras.
- Read the 5G eligibility and post-quota terms.
- Check the coverage map for every essential location.
- Calculate price per validity day and compare it with at least one longer-validity alternative.
- Recheck the checkout screen immediately before payment because prices and benefits are volatile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which network has coverage in my area?
There is no reliable nationwide answer. Search your exact home, workplace and commute on the Jio, Airtel and Vi maps, then validate indoor reception with local users or a SIM test where possible.
Does every plan advertising unlimited 5G provide unlimited high-speed data everywhere?
No. 5G access can require a compatible handset, an eligible plan or add-on, and operator 5G coverage. If any condition is uncertain, budget using the plan’s ordinary daily or total high-speed allowance.
Are the Vi prices in the comparison available across India?
The listed Vi examples came from a Mumbai offers page. Prices, benefits and availability can differ by telecom circle, so check the current offer for your number and location.
The Bottom Line
Choose the plan that gives the lowest acceptable cost for the validity you need, enough ordinary high-speed data, clearly verified 5G eligibility if relevant, and dependable signal at the places you actually use your phone. Recheck the operator’s live, circle-specific terms immediately before payment.
