How to Compare IT Companies Using Quarterly Results, Margins and Deal Wins

The fairest way to compare IT companies is to treat quarterly revenue, margins, bookings, backlog, guidance and cash flow as separate evidence, then reconcile them on the same reporting basis. Revenue shows what was delivered; margins show the economics of that delivery; deal wins indicate potential future work; backlog and recurring-contract measures show visibility; guidance tests management’s forecasting; and cash conversion tests earnings quality.

A large contract is not immediate revenue, and a fast-growing quarter is not automatically high quality. Use the process below to build a like-for-like scorecard before deciding which company is executing better.

Start by defining the question your comparison must answer

Different metrics answer different investor questions. Before copying numbers from earnings releases, write down the decision you are trying to make.

  • Demand now: Compare year-over-year and sequential revenue, while separating organic growth, acquisitions, foreign-exchange effects and changes in product or services mix.
  • Profitability: Compare gross and operating margins on the same accounting basis and explain unusual items.
  • Demand ahead: Examine bookings, large-deal wins, total contract value, book-to-bill, backlog and current remaining performance obligations.
  • Execution: Compare the guidance issued in the previous quarter with the result actually delivered.
  • Earnings quality: Check whether operating cash flow keeps pace with net income and revenue.

No one measure can stand in for the others. A company can have strong bookings but weak current revenue, or high revenue growth caused mainly by an acquisition while its underlying business is flat.

Normalize every quarterly number before comparing companies

Most misleading IT-company comparisons begin with mismatched periods or definitions. Create a data sheet that records the exact period, currency, scope and definition beside every figure.

Match fiscal periods, not just quarter labels

One company’s fourth quarter may end in June while another’s ends in September. A calendar-quarter comparison can therefore pair different demand seasons, billing cycles and economic conditions. Record each fiscal-quarter end date and label any mismatch in your table. If you compare a fiscal quarter with a calendar quarter, describe the limitation rather than presenting the figures as simultaneous.

Separate reported, constant-currency and organic growth

Reported growth includes currency movements and acquired businesses. Constant-currency growth removes exchange-rate changes using the company’s stated methodology. Organic growth normally excludes acquisitions and disposals, but definitions vary. Put the exact label beside the percentage and do not rank a reported-growth figure against an organic-growth figure without qualification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep consolidated and segment data separate

Consolidated revenue and margin include every business and corporate item. Segment figures reveal where demand and profitability differ, but they may use allocations that are not comparable with another company’s segment structure. Never combine a segment margin from one firm with a consolidated margin from another in a single ranking.

Record currency and units

Write the reporting currency and unit—millions or billions—next to each number. Converting currencies yourself introduces a new exchange-rate assumption; if you do so, disclose the rate and date. Keep the company’s original currency in the primary scorecard whenever possible.

Analyze revenue quality, not only the growth rate

Begin with year-over-year growth to capture the trend over a full year, then add sequential growth to identify acceleration or deceleration. A single percentage is incomplete until you explain what produced it.

Break growth into business mix

Identify the contribution from products, consulting, managed services, cloud or subscription contracts, and project work. Subscription and managed-service revenue generally renews on a schedule, while project revenue can be more dependent on start dates and customer budgets. Do not assume one category is superior: examine contract duration, renewal behavior and margin as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check geography, acquisitions and foreign exchange

Regional demand can diverge sharply. An acquisition can lift reported revenue while organic operations shrink, and currency translation can either conceal or exaggerate local-currency performance. Earnings releases often provide constant-currency or organic bridges; preserve those bridges in your notes instead of relying on the headline rate.

Use orders as a supporting demand signal

Cisco’s Q4 FY2026 release illustrates why orders add context but do not replace revenue. The company reported $17.3 billion of revenue, up 18% year over year, alongside GAAP and non-GAAP operating margins. Product orders rose 35% year over year, and the quarter included $4 billion of artificial-intelligence-infrastructure orders. Revenue measures what was recognized during the quarter; orders indicate commitments that may be delivered over later periods. The comparison is useful only when you also investigate order timing, cancellation terms and the period over which those orders convert.

Revenue-quality item What to record Question it answers
Year-over-year revenue Percentage and absolute revenue, with fiscal period Is the business larger than a year ago?
Sequential revenue Quarter-over-quarter change and seasonality Is momentum improving or weakening?
Organic or constant-currency growth Company-defined rate and reconciliation How much growth came from operations rather than acquisitions or FX?
Mix Product, services, subscription, project and regional shares where disclosed What kind of demand generated the growth?
Orders or bookings Value, definition and expected delivery period Is new demand entering the pipeline?

Compare margins on an identical accounting basis

Margin comparisons are meaningful only when the numerator, denominator, accounting basis and scope match. At minimum, capture gross margin and operating margin, the direction from the prior period and the company’s explanation for the movement.

Keep GAAP with GAAP and non-GAAP with non-GAAP

Do not compare one company’s adjusted operating margin with another’s GAAP margin. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission cautions that companies can calculate similarly titled non-GAAP measures differently. One adjustment may exclude stock compensation, while another may also remove restructuring, acquisition costs or amortization. Read the reconciliation and list every material adjustment.

Explain one-off and operating drivers

Margin changes can result from restructuring charges, acquisition integration, foreign exchange, employee utilization, subcontractor costs, wage inflation, pricing, automation or a shift between high- and low-margin services. A reported decline is not automatically a deterioration in the underlying business, but an adjustment is not automatically harmless. Identify whether the item is genuinely nonrecurring and whether management expects it to recur.

Use basis points and bridges

Describe changes in basis points (one basis point is 0.01 percentage point) and cite the company’s bridge when available. A bridge that attributes a decline to mix and foreign exchange is more informative than a bare percentage. Track both the reported margin and the adjusted margin so you can see whether improvement depends on exclusions.

Acquisitions can distort the apparent trend

ServiceNow said an acquisition was expected to create approximately a 75-basis-point operating-margin headwind for fiscal 2026 and approximately a 125-basis-point headwind in the second quarter of 2026. This illustrates why a lower reported margin needs a cause-and-duration analysis: the effect may be concentrated in one quarter, spread across the year or offset by integration benefits. Record the company’s stated period and do not treat the estimate as an observed result.

Interpret bookings and deal wins as leading indicators

Bookings, large-deal bookings, orders and total contract value measure signed or committed work under the company’s definitions. They are not revenue. A contract may begin months later, ramp gradually, contain termination rights or include pass-through costs that contribute little margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask five questions about every large deal

  1. How large is it relative to the company? Express the deal against quarterly revenue or annual bookings when the company provides enough information. A large absolute contract may be immaterial for a very large provider.
  2. When does delivery begin? Identify the expected start date, ramp schedule and recognition pattern. A multiyear contract cannot be counted as one quarter’s revenue.
  3. What is recurring? Separate subscription, managed-service or renewable components from one-time implementation work.
  4. How concentrated is the risk? Note customer, industry and geography concentration, as well as dependence on one hyperscaler or channel partner.
  5. How will you verify conversion? Look for subsequent backlog, current remaining performance obligation, revenue recognition or cash receipts.

Read Wipro’s bookings and margin together

Wipro reported Q4 FY2026 total bookings of $3,455 million and large-deal bookings of $1,440 million, while its IT-services operating margin was 17.3%. The figures answer different questions: bookings indicate the amount of new work signed under Wipro’s definition, the large-deal figure shows the contribution of major awards, and the margin shows the profitability of delivered IT services in that period. Do not add the two booking figures together; large-deal bookings are a subset or category within total bookings unless the company explicitly defines them otherwise.

Deal metric What it can indicate What it cannot prove by itself
Total bookings Volume of newly contracted work under the company’s definition Immediate revenue or profit
Large-deal bookings Scale of major awards and potential future concentration That every deal will ramp on schedule
Total contract value Economic size over the stated contract term Quarterly revenue or cash timing
Orders Customer commitments entering the pipeline Recognized revenue under accounting rules
Book-to-bill New bookings relative to delivered billings or revenue under the stated definition Uniform growth across segments

Use book-to-bill and segment data to test conversion

Book-to-bill above 1.0x generally means new bookings exceeded the measured billings or revenue during the period; below 1.0x means the pipeline contracted on that definition. Always verify the denominator and period because companies define the ratio differently.

DXC Technology’s FY2026 segment disclosures show why consolidated figures can hide divergent demand. Consulting and Engineering Services reported a 1.10x book-to-bill and a 10.3% segment margin. Global Infrastructure Services reported 0.94x book-to-bill and a 6.8% margin. Insurance reported 0.76x book-to-bill and a 10.1% margin.

DXC FY2026 segment Book-to-bill Segment margin Interpretation
Consulting and Engineering Services 1.10x 10.3% Bookings exceeded the measured billings; assess whether the backlog is profitable and convertible.
Global Infrastructure Services 0.94x 6.8% Bookings were below the measured billings; investigate whether this is temporary, seasonal or structural.
Insurance 0.76x 10.1% Lower booking coverage despite a higher margin than Global Infrastructure Services.

Do not infer that the segment with the highest book-to-bill has the best economics. Conversion speed, contract profitability, delivery capacity and renewal rates determine whether bookings become attractive revenue.

Measure forward visibility with backlog and recurring commitments

Backlog, current remaining performance obligations (cRPO), renewal or retention rates and contract duration help estimate how much future revenue is already supported by contracts. Higher visibility can justify slower current-quarter growth, but only if the commitments are economically sound.

Backlog and cRPO

Record the balance, growth rate, expected recognition window and the company’s definition. cRPO generally represents revenue expected from existing contracts over the next twelve months, but companies can define and present it differently. A rising balance is more useful when paired with stable or improving margins and evidence of timely delivery.

Recurring revenue and retention

Subscription revenue and renewal or net-retention measures indicate how much revenue can repeat without a new sale. Check whether retention is measured by customers, dollars or annual recurring revenue, and whether it includes expansions, contractions and cancellations.

Contract duration and delivery capacity

A five-year total contract value provides a different visibility profile from a six-month project. Compare duration with the company’s staffing, data-center or implementation capacity. A large award that cannot be staffed may be delayed, while aggressive hiring can pressure near-term margins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ServiceNow reports cRPO growth and subscription-revenue guidance, and HCLTech’s investor materials highlight bookings and total contract value from new deal wins. Use those disclosures to connect signed work with the revenue stream and time horizon rather than treating a headline deal count as a forecast.

Test guidance credibility and estimate revisions

Guidance is a forecast, not a result. For each quarter, save the prior guidance range, the midpoint, the actual result and the reason for any difference.

  1. Copy the original revenue, margin and cash-flow guidance exactly, including currency and constant-currency assumptions.
  2. Compare the actual result with both the range and midpoint.
  3. Classify the variance as operational, foreign-exchange, acquisition-related, timing-related or a change in management assumptions.
  4. Check whether the company raised, maintained or cut full-year guidance after the result.
  5. Track estimate revisions by analysts or the market only as context; the company’s own prior forecast is the primary execution test.

Repeated beats can indicate conservative forecasting, while repeated misses can signal weak visibility or poor execution. One surprise is not a pattern. Also distinguish a beat created by a one-time cost reduction from a beat driven by durable demand.

Check whether earnings turn into cash

Operating cash flow relative to net income is a simple earnings-quality check. A ratio near or above 100% means reported profit was broadly converted into operating cash during the measured period; a lower ratio warrants an explanation involving receivables, contract assets, payables, restructuring payments or other working-capital movements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wipro reported Q4 FY2026 operating cash flow equal to 90.1% of net income and FY2026 operating cash flow equal to 112.6% of net income. The quarterly and full-year ratios differ because working-capital timing can move cash between periods. Use both horizons and examine free-cash-flow margin when capital expenditure is material.

Cash conversion does not replace margin analysis. A company can convert earnings to cash while earning a low margin, and a high-margin quarter can temporarily produce weak cash because customers have not paid yet.

Build a repeatable comparison scorecard

Use one row per company and one column per axis. Keep the source period, definition and accounting basis in adjacent notes.

Axis What to collect How to interpret
Growth Year-over-year and sequential revenue; constant-currency and organic growth Separate underlying demand from foreign exchange, acquisitions and timing.
Margin Gross and operating margin; GAAP or non-GAAP label; bridge items Compare like with like and explain one-offs.
Deal quality Total bookings, large-deal bookings, total contract value, orders and book-to-bill Assess size, duration, recurring content, concentration and conversion.
Visibility Backlog, cRPO, renewal or retention and contract duration Higher visibility can offset slower current-quarter growth when economics are sound.
Execution Prior guidance versus actuals and estimate revisions Repeated beats or misses reveal forecasting quality.
Cash quality Operating cash flow, free-cash-flow margin and cash conversion Test whether reported earnings become cash.

Scoring can make a complex comparison readable, but avoid a false precision such as declaring a winner by adding unlike percentages. A practical approach is to rate each axis as strong, mixed or weak, then write the evidence and uncertainty behind the rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A step-by-step workflow for your next earnings comparison

  1. Set the period: Write each company’s fiscal-quarter end date, reporting currency and whether the data is consolidated or segment-level.
  2. Capture revenue: Record absolute revenue, year-over-year growth and sequential growth, then annotate organic and constant-currency measures.
  3. Explain the mix: Note product versus services, subscription versus project, geographic contribution and acquisitions.
  4. Capture margins: Record gross and operating margins separately, mark GAAP or non-GAAP, and copy the company’s bridge items.
  5. Record demand indicators: Enter bookings, large-deal bookings, orders, total contract value and book-to-bill with definitions and timing.
  6. Test visibility: Add backlog, cRPO, recurring-revenue, renewal and retention data, including the expected recognition period.
  7. Audit execution: Compare the previous guidance range with actual revenue, margin and cash flow, and document the explanation for any variance.
  8. Audit cash: Compare operating cash flow with net income and revenue for both the quarter and trailing year where available.
  9. Write the conclusion: State which company has stronger current demand, profitability, visibility, execution and cash quality, and identify the evidence that remains uncertain.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

  • Ranking headline growth rates: Replace the ranking with reported, organic and constant-currency views and explain acquisitions.
  • Mixing GAAP and adjusted margins: Rebuild the table with matching bases and list every material adjustment.
  • Counting a contract as revenue: Separate bookings or total contract value from recognized revenue and check the delivery schedule.
  • Ignoring concentration: Assess whether one large customer, geography or industry drives the deal pipeline.
  • Using only consolidated data: Inspect segments for divergent book-to-bill, margins and demand.
  • Treating guidance as fact: Compare the forecast with the subsequent actual and record the variance.
  • Reading one quarter of cash flow in isolation: Add a full-year or trailing-period view to identify working-capital timing.
  • Assuming non-GAAP measures are standardized: Read each reconciliation; similarly titled measures may exclude different costs.

Bottom line

Compare IT companies by triangulating delivery, economics, future demand, visibility, execution and cash. Normalize fiscal periods and definitions first. Then read revenue quality, match GAAP with GAAP or non-GAAP with non-GAAP, treat deal wins as leading indicators, verify conversion through backlog or cRPO, test guidance against actuals and finish with cash conversion. The strongest comparison is not the one with the biggest single number; it is the one that explains how demand becomes profitable, recurring and collectible revenue.
