How to compare IDBI Bank and HDB Financial Services before investing

There is no universal winner between IDBI Bank and HDB Financial Services. IDBI is a bank that takes deposits, while HDB Financial Services (HDBFS) is an RBI-registered lending non-bank finance company (NBFC). Their funding, regulations, financial statements and key ratios differ. Compare each on the same reporting date, then weigh asset quality, capital, sustainable returns, liquidity, ownership and valuation against your risk tolerance.

Start with the structural difference: bank versus NBFC

The first mistake in this comparison is treating IDBI Bank and HDBFS as two versions of the same business. IDBI Bank can accept deposits from the public and reports a deposit franchise, CASA (current account and savings account) balances, net interest margin and regulatory bank capital. HDBFS lends to customers but is an NBFC; it funds its loan book through borrowings and other market or institutional sources and reports assets under management (AUM), disbursements, spreads, liquidity and borrowing costs.

IDBI Bank

IDBI Bank is classified as a private-sector bank for RBI regulatory purposes. Its official profile says that Life Insurance Corporation of India acquired 51% of the bank’s total paid-up equity capital, resulting in the classification with effect from 21 January 2019. A bank’s core intermediation model is to gather deposits, invest or lend those funds, manage liquidity and hold capital against credit and market risks.

Deposits can be a relatively stable funding source, but their cost changes with interest rates and competition. CASA deposits usually cost less than term deposits, so the CASA mix affects the bank’s funding cost and margin. The relevant balance-sheet questions are deposit growth, CASA share, credit-deposit ratio, advances growth, liquidity and the quality of the loan book.

HDB Financial Services

HDBFS is an RBI-registered lending NBFC. It does not have the same deposit-taking model as a bank, so it must fund loans through borrowings and maintain access to debt markets, banks, securitisation or other permitted sources. Its results are therefore read through AUM growth, disbursement momentum, borrowing mix, cost of funds, liquidity buffers, spreads, operating expenses and credit costs.

The difference affects both risk and valuation. A bank’s deposit franchise can support a lower funding cost, while an NBFC may have greater flexibility in serving specific customer segments but can be more exposed to refinancing conditions. Do not rank a bank’s CASA ratio against an NBFC’s borrowing ratio as if they measured the same thing.

What the latest supplied figures actually show

The available figures come from different periods and should not be presented as a synchronized performance contest. IDBI Bank’s data are from its official Q3 FY2025 release for 31 December 2024. HDBFS’s figures are for FY2024-25, the year ended 31 March 2025.

These figures are useful starting points, not a complete investment case. The supplied material does not establish synchronized 15 October 2026 share prices, market capitalisations, valuation multiples or a complete FY2026 like-for-like comparison. Refresh both companies’ exchange filings and prices immediately before making an investment decision.

Use a same-date comparison process

A disciplined comparison prevents a low valuation or a single strong quarter from dominating your decision. Work through the following sequence and record the source date for every number.

1. Fix the comparison date

Choose the latest date on which both companies have reported results, or clearly label one company as quarterly and the other as annual. Write down the financial year, quarter, share price date, shares outstanding and whether figures are consolidated or standalone. Do not combine IDBI Bank’s 31 December 2024 asset-quality data with an HDBFS balance sheet from a later or earlier period and call it a current comparison.

2. Map each business and customer segment

List the products, borrower types and geographies that drive earnings. For the bank, separate retail, corporate, agriculture, small-business and other portfolios where the filing permits. For HDBFS, identify the consumer, commercial, enterprise or other lending segments, their ticket sizes and repayment profiles. A company growing in a riskier segment may need a higher return to justify the same valuation.

3. Measure growth with the right denominator

  • IDBI Bank: compare deposits, CASA, gross and net advances, credit-deposit ratio and fee-generating business. Check whether advances are growing faster than deposits and whether that growth is changing liquidity or funding costs.
  • HDBFS: compare AUM, disbursements, segment mix, geographic mix and collection trends. Disbursements are new originations; AUM is the outstanding managed portfolio after repayments, run-off, write-offs and other adjustments.

Calculate multi-period growth only after confirming that the definitions and consolidation perimeter have not changed.

4. Test profitability, not just net profit

  • For IDBI Bank, review: net interest income, net interest margin (NIM), return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), fee income, operating expenses and cost-to-income.
  • For HDBFS, review: revenue, spreads, borrowing cost, operating expenses, credit costs, PBT, PAT, ROA and ROE. Examine whether earnings growth comes from a durable spread or from a temporary fall in provisions.

Use average assets and average equity where available. A high ROE produced by thin equity or elevated leverage may carry more downside than a lower ROE supported by stronger capital.

5. Examine asset quality through the cycle

Track gross NPA, net NPA, provision coverage, write-offs, restructured loans, recoveries and stage-3 assets. Ask whether delinquency is stable, improving because of genuine collections, or merely being deferred through restructurings and write-offs. Compare credit cost as a percentage of average loans, not only the absolute provision number.

For HDBFS, the RBI ageing framework cited in its disclosures classifies special-mention accounts (SMA) as up to 30 days overdue, more than 30 to 60 days, and more than 60 to 90 days. An NPA may be upgraded only after all arrears of interest and principal are paid. That rule matters when judging whether an apparent improvement reflects full curing of the account or a presentation change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check capital and liquidity separately

IDBI Bank’s Q3 FY2025 capital adequacy ratio was 21.98%, with CET1 of 19.91%. Compare those figures with regulatory minimums, internal buffers, risk-weighted-asset growth and the bank’s ability to absorb losses while continuing to grow.

For HDBFS, obtain the latest applicable NBFC capital ratios, liquidity coverage, maturity profile and borrowing composition. Review the proportion of short-term versus long-term funding, secured versus unsecured borrowings, bank lines, market instruments and available cash or liquid investments. An NBFC can report strong profit while becoming more vulnerable if loan maturities extend beyond reliable funding access.

7. Read ownership and governance disclosures

Ownership can affect strategic direction, capital support and related-party risk. IDBI Bank’s profile records LIC’s 51% acquisition and the resulting private-sector-bank classification. For HDBFS, the 2025 IPO documentation described a ₹2,500 crore fresh issue and a ₹10,000 crore offer for sale by HDFC Bank. A fresh issue brings new capital to the company; an offer for sale transfers shares from an existing holder and does not itself add cash to HDBFS.

Read the prospectus and subsequent filings for use of proceeds, promoter and post-issue shareholding, related-party transactions, contingent liabilities, auditor observations, risk factors and any restrictions on selling shares. Do not assume a prominent parent eliminates credit, liquidity or governance risk.

8. Value each company on the earnings it can sustain

Use the same-date market price, latest reported book value and the relevant earnings period. For IDBI Bank, examine price-to-book (P/B), ROE, NIM, CASA, credit cost and cost-to-income together. For HDBFS, add AUM growth, spreads, cost of funds, liquidity and credit costs. Record the exact calculation date because market prices and book values change at different times.

A lower P/B is not automatically cheaper. It may reflect weaker expected ROE, poorer asset quality, higher funding risk, governance concerns or a need for future capital. Conversely, a higher multiple can be justified only if growth and returns are durable after normalising credit costs.

How to analyse IDBI Bank on its own terms

Start with funding quality

IDBI Bank reported deposits of ₹2,77,602 crore and net advances of ₹2,00,944 crore in its 31 December 2024 Q3 FY2025 release. Examine deposit growth, the CASA share, term-deposit pricing and the credit-deposit ratio. Fast loan growth funded mainly by expensive deposits can compress NIM even when reported advances look strong.

Then test asset-quality resilience

The same release reported gross NPA of 3.57%, net NPA of 0.18% and provision coverage of 99.47%. The large gap between gross and net NPA indicates substantial provisioning, but it does not remove the need to inspect slippages, recoveries, write-offs, restructured accounts and concentration by borrower or sector. Ask whether new slippages are falling and whether recoveries are cash-based rather than dependent on collateral values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret capital alongside growth

Capital adequacy of 21.98% and CET1 of 19.91% provide a significant reported capital cushion at that date. The investment question is how quickly risk-weighted assets could grow, how much capital future expansion would consume and whether profitability can replenish capital without diluting shareholders.

Review operating efficiency and franchise earnings

Compare NIM, fee income, operating expenses and cost-to-income over several periods. A bank with improving asset quality but persistently weak efficiency may struggle to convert balance-sheet scale into attractive ROA and ROE. Conversely, temporary treasury gains or recoveries should not be treated as recurring operating income.

How to analyse HDB Financial Services on its own terms

Separate originations from outstanding assets

HDBFS reported FY2024-25 disbursements of ₹66,108 crore and AUM of ₹1,07,262 crore. Disbursement growth can signal demand and distribution strength, but AUM determines the interest-earning asset base and future credit exposure. Reconcile the two using repayments, prepayments, securitisation, write-offs and portfolio sales where disclosed.

Check whether growth earns an adequate spread

HDBFS reported total revenue of ₹16,300 crore, PBT of ₹2,928 crore and PAT of ₹2,176 crore for FY2024-25. Examine the spread between yield on loans and cost of funds after factoring in operating expenses and credit costs. Rapid AUM growth that requires expensive borrowing or aggressive pricing may not create shareholder value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stress the borrowing and liquidity profile

Because HDBFS is an NBFC, map every major funding source, maturity bucket, interest-rate basis, security and refinancing date. Review liquidity coverage and available undrawn lines, then test a scenario in which market funding becomes more expensive or temporarily unavailable. The relevant question is not simply whether liquidity is positive today, but whether it covers obligations through a stressed funding period.

Investigate collections and early-stage delinquency

Look beyond the reported NPA ratio. Track SMA buckets, 30-plus and 90-plus day delinquencies, roll rates, collection efficiency, write-offs, recoveries and restructured loans by product. A rising 30-to-60-day bucket can warn of future NPAs even when the reported stage-3 ratio remains low.

Compare asset quality and capital without mixing definitions

Question IDBI Bank HDBFS
Primary asset measure Gross and net advances, with bank loan classifications AUM and portfolio-level loan disclosures
Delinquency measures Gross NPA, net NPA, slippages, recoveries and restructuring SMA ageing, stage-3 assets, collection efficiency, write-offs and recoveries
Provisioning focus Provision coverage, credit cost and technical write-offs Expected-credit-loss provisions, credit cost and write-offs under NBFC disclosures
Capital lens Capital adequacy and CET1; Q3 FY2025 reported 21.98% and 19.91% Applicable NBFC capital ratios, leverage and liquidity; obtain from the latest filing
Funding risk Deposit stability, CASA, wholesale funding and liquidity Borrowing mix, maturity gaps, market access, liquidity coverage and refinancing

Even identical percentages can carry different economic meaning because loan definitions, provisioning rules, write-off practices and funding structures differ. Compare trends within each company first; use cross-company comparisons only after reconciling definitions.

What the 2025 HDBFS IPO changes for an investor

The IPO documentation listed a ₹2,500 crore fresh issue and a ₹10,000 crore offer for sale by HDFC Bank. Analyse the two components separately. Fresh-issue proceeds can strengthen capital or fund stated corporate purposes, subject to the prospectus; offer-for-sale proceeds go to the selling shareholder. Neither component by itself proves that the post-IPO valuation is attractive.

Read the June 2025 prospectus and red herring prospectus for risk factors, use of proceeds, lending concentration, related-party transactions, capital and liquidity disclosures, outstanding legal matters and the intended post-issue shareholding. After listing, compare actual use of proceeds and reported financial performance with those disclosures.

Build a valuation that can survive a bad year

Prepare a worksheet with the following fields and freeze the date beside every input:

Field IDBI Bank HDBFS
Share price and market capitalisation Use the same exchange date and share-count basis Use the same exchange date and post-issue share count where applicable
Price-to-book Market capitalisation divided by latest reported shareholders’ equity Market capitalisation divided by latest reported shareholders’ funds
Return measure Normalised ROE and ROA Normalised ROE and ROA
Growth measure Deposit and advances growth AUM and disbursement growth
Risk adjustment Gross/net NPA, provision coverage, credit cost and capital SMA and stage-3 trends, credit cost, liquidity and borrowing cost

Run at least three scenarios: a base case, a credit-stress case with higher slippages and provisions, and a funding-stress case with slower growth and higher borrowing costs. A company that looks inexpensive only in the optimistic case deserves a smaller position or further investigation.

Decision rules for different investor priorities

If funding stability is your priority

Give more weight to deposit composition, CASA, liquidity and capital at the bank, while still testing deposit repricing and asset quality. For HDBFS, demand a clear liquidity buffer and a borrowing profile that remains manageable under refinancing stress.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are seeking growth

Assess whether growth is supported by underwriting, collections, distribution and capital rather than simply by leverage. For IDBI Bank, compare advances growth with deposits and capital generation. For HDBFS, reconcile disbursements with AUM, spreads and delinquency trends.

If downside protection matters most

Prioritise provisioning, recoveries, concentration, capital headroom and stressed liquidity over headline profit growth. A high provision-coverage figure at the bank is helpful, but inspect new slippages. At HDBFS, monitor SMA migration and refinancing needs before relying on reported PAT.

If valuation is the main attraction

Do not choose the lower P/B mechanically. Require a credible path to sustainable ROE, stable asset quality and adequate capital. Record the market date and recalculate after every material result or corporate action.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing unlike periods: label quarter, fiscal year and reporting date in every table.
  • Calling AUM deposits: an NBFC’s AUM is a loan-portfolio measure, not customer deposits.
  • Using NPA percentages without definitions: check gross versus net, stage-3 treatment, write-offs and restructuring.
  • Ignoring funding costs: rising policy rates or weaker market access can affect an NBFC faster than a deposit-funded bank, but banks also face deposit repricing.
  • Treating an IPO as proof of quality: separate fresh capital from an offer for sale and read the prospectus risk factors.
  • Using stale valuation multiples: refresh prices, shares outstanding, book value and earnings immediately before investing.
  • Assuming a parent guarantees outcomes: ownership can provide strategic support, but it does not eliminate credit, liquidity or governance risks.

A practical pre-investment checklist

  1. Write the comparison date and reporting periods for both companies.
  2. Confirm whether each figure is consolidated or standalone and whether definitions changed.
  3. For IDBI Bank, record deposits, CASA, advances, NIM, ROA, ROE, gross and net NPA, provision coverage, credit cost and capital.
  4. For HDBFS, record AUM, disbursements, revenue, spreads, cost of funds, operating expenses, credit cost, SMA buckets, stage-3 assets, liquidity and borrowing maturities.
  5. Review ownership, related parties, contingent liabilities, auditor comments and corporate actions.
  6. Calculate same-date P/B and other multiples using the latest reported book value and normalised earnings.
  7. Stress-test higher credit losses, slower growth and more expensive funding.
  8. Decide the maximum position size before buying, based on the downside case rather than the headline return.

Bottom line

IDBI Bank and HDB Financial Services should be treated as different financial-business exposures, not interchangeable stocks. IDBI’s comparison hinges on deposits, CASA, bank capital, NIM and provisioning; HDBFS’s hinges on AUM quality, spreads, borrowing costs, liquidity and NBFC capital. The supplied figures show IDBI’s 31 December 2024 capital and asset-quality position and HDBFS’s FY2024-25 scale and profit, but they do not provide synchronized October 2026 prices or a complete FY2026 comparison. Refresh the filings, align the dates and choose only after your valuation still works under credit and funding stress.
