The dependable answer comes from comparing the same local basket at the same time, converting package prices to a common unit, and recording the lowest price you can actually redeem after loyalty discounts and coupons. Then add delivery or pickup costs, substitutions, and travel time before deciding whether one store or a split trip is the better value.
What “cheapest grocery store” really means
A store can advertise the lowest price on milk yet cost more for your complete list. Product mix, package sizes, local competition, weekly promotions, loyalty requirements, online markups, and stockouts all change the result. A useful comparison therefore answers a narrower question: What will this exact basket cost at these nearby stores, through the channel I will use, on this date?

Kroger itself says prices and promotions can vary by location, may require a Shopper’s Card, and may not be the same through a third-party delivery marketplace. Its shopping guidance explains those location and channel differences (Kroger mobile-app and shopping information).
Use two totals for each store:
- Comparable item total: the sum of matched products after discounts you can redeem.
- Trip total: the item total plus delivery, service, pickup, minimum-order, substitution, and travel costs.
The first number tells you which shelf or online assortment is cheaper. The second tells you what your household actually gives up.

Build a fair, repeatable comparison
1. Choose stores and a date
Select one specific Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart, and Aldi location that you could realistically visit. Record the date and whether you are checking an in-store shelf, the retailer’s own website, pickup, or a delivery marketplace. A store-level comparison is more meaningful than comparing national advertisements because prices, assortment, and promotions differ by location.
2. Freeze one basket
Write the list before opening any app. Include the products you normally buy and quantities for one shopping trip. Keep brands, package sizes, and quality grades identical wherever possible. If an exact match is unavailable, label the replacement clearly:
- Brand tier: national brand, store brand, organic, premium, or value.
- Product specification: flavor, fat percentage, cut of meat, count, and size.
- Quantity: number of packages or total weight needed.
Do not compare a conventional 2% milk with an organic gallon, or a 12-ounce branded cereal with a 24-ounce store-brand box, and call the result a brand-price ranking. Those may be sensible substitutions, but they answer a different question.
3. Capture two prices at every store
For each item, record the ordinary shelf or online price and the lowest price available to you after the discount conditions you can satisfy. The second price might require a loyalty account, a clipped digital coupon, a quantity threshold, or an advertised sale.
Kroger’s digital weekly-ad tools support list building, weekly deals, personalized coupons, and Shopper’s Card savings; Kroger says digital coupons can be used in-store, for pickup, and for delivery (Kroger digital weekly ad). Albertsons for U is free and provides personalized deals and Points when the member account is used (Albertsons for U FAQ). ALDI publishes current offers in its app (ALDI mobile app).
Show the condition beside the number. “$2.49 with clipped coupon, limit two” is not interchangeable with “$2.49 everyday price.” If you cannot create the required account or will not buy the required quantity, use the regular price in your personal decision.
4. Normalize every package to a unit price
Use a common unit before comparing. The basic calculation is:

unit price = item price ÷ package quantity

For example, a hypothetical 18-ounce cereal box at $4.50 costs $0.25 per ounce. A 24-ounce box at $5.28 costs $0.22 per ounce, so the larger box is cheaper per ounce even though its checkout price is higher. Keep the calculation in your worksheet rather than relying on shelf-tag formatting.
For weighted items ordered online, use the amount ultimately fulfilled. ALDI’s help guidance notes that weighted-item totals can change at checkout (ALDI weighted-item and online-order information). If the store charges for 2.1 pounds instead of the estimated 2 pounds, replace the estimate with the final weight in your comparison.
5. Keep channel costs outside the shelf-price column
Make separate rows for delivery fees, service fees, pickup charges, minimum-order rules, tips, and substitution adjustments. Do not bury them inside an item’s unit price. Online marketplace prices can also differ from in-store prices, and an advertised in-store promotion may not apply online. The ALDI guidance for marketplace orders explains that some in-store sales may not carry over and that retailer pricing-policy labels identify exceptions (ALDI online-order pricing information).
If a substitute is accepted, record the substitute’s package size and unit price, not the original item’s price. If a product is unavailable and you would make another trip, count the extra travel in the trip comparison.
6. Compare the whole basket
Add the comparable item totals only after every item has a matched unit and a stated discount condition. A single low-priced item proves nothing about the basket. Mark items that are unavailable, unmatched, or substituted so you can see whether a low total depends on leaving out expensive staples.
7. Add the cost of making the trip
For an in-person run, consider fuel, parking, tolls, and the value you place on driving time. For a second store, add those costs to the savings from the cheaper items. For delivery, add every displayed fee and any tip you would actually pay. This prevents a $5 item-price saving from appearing attractive when it requires a 30-minute detour or a separate delivery order.
8. Save the result and repeat on a schedule
Prices and promotions change. Keep the same basket for a month or a quarter, update the date, and note which discounts were actually redeemed. A consistent history can reveal whether a store is reliably cheaper for your household or merely won one promotional week.

How each chain’s pricing tools affect your comparison

Kroger: separate card savings from the shelf price
Enter both the non-member price and the Shopper’s Card price when the shelf or app displays both. Clip digital coupons before checkout and note limits. Kroger states that prices and promotions may vary by location and that third-party delivery pricing may differ, so do not transfer a Kroger.com result to an Instacart order without checking the final cart.

Albertsons: treat personalized offers as shopper-specific
Albertsons for U offers personalized deals, Points, and grocery or fuel rewards. A price visible after signing in may not be available to an unregistered shopper. Log the offer’s expiration date, purchase requirement, and whether Points are immediate savings or a reward for a later transaction.
Walmart: distinguish predictable pricing from a guarantee of lowest price
Walmart describes its Every Day Low Prices strategy as a way to make grocery budgeting more predictable (Walmart Every Day Low Prices). That is the company’s positioning, not an independent finding that Walmart wins every basket. Walmart’s U.S. policy matches an identical price advertised on Walmart.com, but Walmart.com does not generally match competitor prices (Walmart price-match policy). Record whether the item is sold and shipped by Walmart or by a marketplace seller, because the policy and fulfillment conditions may differ.
ALDI: compare specifications, not familiar brands
ALDI’s assortment and package sizes can differ from the other chains. Match ingredients, net weight, count, and quality tier before treating an item as equivalent. The ALDI app is useful for checking current offers, but an offer price still needs a unit-price calculation.
What published price studies suggest—and what they do not
A June 2024 online grocery pricing study reported Kroger at a 5.3% premium to Walmart and Albertsons/Safeway at about a 21.6% premium to Walmart (June 2024 online grocery pricing study). Those figures are directional basket results, not a promise about your neighborhood checkout total. The study said loyalty rewards, fuel rewards, and personalized promotions were not fully captured. It also examined online pricing, which may not match an in-store shelf or a third-party marketplace.

Replace the example dashes with your observed prices; they are not market estimates. Add a final line for fees and a separate line for travel. If an item cannot be matched, write “not comparable” and exclude it from the matched-item subtotal rather than silently using a different quality tier.

Choose one store when the savings are small
If the cheapest basket differs by only a few dollars, one trip may be financially better after fuel, parking, time, and the risk of a second store being out of stock. Use the trip total, not the shelf-price subtotal.

Split the trip when high-value categories separate clearly
A second store can make sense when a meaningful share of your basket has a large, repeatable unit-price difference and both stores are on your normal route. Put staples with stable prices in the store that wins them and avoid chasing a single loss-leader.
Use a hybrid channel only when fees do not erase the gain
Pickup can save time but may have fees or minimums. Delivery can be worthwhile when it replaces a long trip, yet service charges, tips, online price differences, and substitutions can reverse the apparent saving. Calculate the checkout total after every fee before placing the order.
Apps and comparison tools
Start with official retailer apps because they show the account-specific coupons and offers that determine your redeemable price. Kroger’s weekly-ad page, Albertsons for U, and the ALDI app are the primary places to verify deals. For broader scanning, CartScout says it compares real local prices at Kroger, Aldi, Walmart, and other chains (CartScout). CartIQ says it compares prices across more than 20 national chains, including Kroger, Walmart, and ALDI (CartIQ). Check the displayed store, package size, channel, and date in any comparison app; an automated result is useful only when those fields match your basket.
Common errors and how to correct them
Comparing advertised items instead of the basket
Problem: You collect the lowest headline prices from four weekly ads, but they apply to different products and quantities.

Ignoring unit size
Problem: A larger package looks expensive even though its per-ounce price is lower.
Fix: Divide price by ounces, pounds, liters, or count and compare the resulting unit.
Counting a coupon you cannot redeem
Problem: The calculation assumes a clipped offer, loyalty account, minimum quantity, or expiration date that does not apply to you.

Fix: Maintain regular and redeemable columns and record the condition beside the discounted number.
Mixing store and marketplace prices
Problem: You compare an in-store shelf price at one chain with a delivery-marketplace price at another.
Fix: Compare like channels or add every channel-specific fee and markup separately.
Using estimated weight for meat and produce
Problem: The final charge changes because the fulfilled weight differs from the estimate.
Fix: Replace the estimate with the receipt or final-order weight before calculating the unit price.
Treating a national ranking as a personal guarantee
Problem: A study’s average premium is assumed to apply to every neighborhood and promotion.
Fix: Treat the published percentages as directional context and repeat the local-basket calculation.
