To find the cheapest fuel that is actually worth buying, compare the same fuel grade and payment terms, check when each listing was updated, weigh price against distance, and confirm the station is open before you detour. Search a local fuel-price finder by your current location, postal code or ZIP code; for a trip, search along the route or near the destination. A station showing the lowest number is not necessarily the cheapest overall if it is farther away, requires cash or a membership, or is displaying an old report.
A six-step method for finding a genuinely cheaper fill-up
- Choose a local source. Open a fuel-price comparison service, map app or government finder that covers your country. Search for “gas prices near me,” “find gas” or “cheapest fuel prices near you,” then allow location access or enter a postal code or ZIP code.
- Search the right place. If you are commuting or travelling, search near the route, a planned rest stop or the destination rather than looking only around your current position. A small saving at the start can disappear if you drive out of your way.
- Set the exact fuel. Select the fuel type and grade specified for your vehicle. Compare regular with regular, premium with premium, and petrol with petrol or diesel with diesel. Never treat a lower-priced grade as a saving if your vehicle manufacturer requires another grade.
- Shortlist by price and distance. Use a combined price-and-distance sort when available. Otherwise, note both figures for each candidate instead of choosing the first station listed by price.
- Check the price conditions. Read the timestamp or last-reported date. Look for cash-only pricing, loyalty-card requirements, club membership, app-only promotions and other restrictions. The relevant figure is the price you can pay with your payment method and fuel grade.
- Verify before turning off your route. Confirm opening hours, station availability and the selected grade. If a price looks unusually low, old or inconsistent with nearby listings, check a second source or call the station before making a special trip.
This process separates a low displayed price from a low total cost. It also protects you from the most common source of disappointment: arriving at a pump and discovering that the advertised figure applied to a different payment method, grade or reporting time.

Make every comparison like-for-like
Fuel type and octane grade
Start with the fuel your owner’s manual or fuel flap specifies. In the United States, listings may distinguish regular, mid-grade and premium by octane rating. In other countries, services may use petrol, diesel and grade names that differ by market. A premium price cannot be compared with a regular price, and a diesel listing is irrelevant to a petrol vehicle. If your manufacturer permits more than one grade, compare only the grades explicitly approved for your model; do not downgrade solely to save money.

The same pump can show separate cash, debit, credit, loyalty and membership prices. Some services expose a cash-price toggle; others display one prominent figure and place conditions in the station details. Record the price you will actually receive, including any membership fee or purchase requirement. A discount that requires buying a club membership is not the same as an immediately available pump price.

Price age and reporting method
A timestamp is as important as the number. Crowd-sourced services may show a recent member report beside an older station entry. Government or retailer feeds can update on a schedule rather than instantly. Treat an un-timestamped price as an estimate, not a guarantee, and corroborate it when the saving is large enough to justify a detour.
Station availability
Check opening hours, payment acceptance, amenities and any access restrictions. A station inside a restricted site, a members-only club station or a forecourt that closes overnight may not be a practical alternative even when its listed price is lower.
Calculate whether a detour saves money
Use this framework before leaving your route:
Estimated gross savings = (your normal price per unit − candidate price per unit) × the amount you plan to buy.
Then subtract the estimated fuel cost of the extra driving. Include the additional time and, where relevant, tolls, parking or a lost opportunity to use a station already on your route. The result is an estimate, because traffic, vehicle consumption and pump prices can change.
A practical calculation
Suppose you normally pay $3.60 per gallon and plan to buy 12 gallons. A candidate station lists $3.45, so the gross saving is ($3.60 − $3.45) × 12 = $1.80. If reaching it adds 10 miles round-trip and your car uses one gallon per 30 miles, the detour consumes about one-third of a gallon. At $3.45 per gallon, that extra fuel costs about $1.15, leaving roughly $0.65 before valuing your time. If the lower price requires cash you do not have or a membership fee, include those costs too.

Use a break-even distance
You can estimate the maximum worthwhile detour by dividing your gross saving by your vehicle’s fuel cost per mile. For example, a $1.80 saving and an operating fuel cost of $0.115 per mile produce a break-even distance of about 15.6 additional miles. Stay below that distance if you want the fuel arithmetic alone to remain positive; set a lower limit when your time is valuable.
Country-specific tools and what their prices mean
United Kingdom: Fuel Finder and connected services
The UK government Fuel Finder service lists retail prices by fuel type, forecourt address, operator and brand, together with amenities, opening hours and update timestamps. Department for Energy Security and Net Zero guidance published 2 February 2026 says prices are published within 30 minutes of a change. That is a reporting requirement for participating stations, not a promise that every screen or third-party app refreshes at the same moment.

Developer API access is available and requires OAuth 2.0 authentication. Drivers who simply want a nearby price can use a connected map or comparison service rather than the API.
A 2026 government factsheet lists services using Fuel Finder data, including Google Maps, Waze, RAC Fuel Watch, MoneyHelper and comparison websites. The same factsheet reports that around 90% of petrol stations were signed up at publication and estimates average savings of £40 a year for car-owning households. Both figures are government statements at that publication date: coverage can change, and the £40 figure is an estimate rather than a guaranteed saving for an individual driver.
When comparing UK listings, check that the displayed figure is for the correct petrol or diesel grade, note the timestamp, and look at the forecourt’s opening hours. If a station is missing, it may not yet be covered by the scheme or its feed may not have refreshed.

United States: GasBuddy, AAA and EIA data
GasBuddy supports nearby and postal-code searches. Its app can sort results by price, distance or both, and filter by brand, rating and amenities. A cash-price toggle may appear because some US stations charge different amounts by payment method. Filters can hide stations, including club stations, so reset them or inspect the map when a likely low-price station is absent.

This describes the provider’s algorithm; it is not an independent accuracy audit. Treat the result as a reported observation and check its age.
AAA’s local price finder accepts a city and state or a ZIP code and says its prices are updated daily. It is useful as a second local source, especially when two services disagree. Compare its update cadence and local coverage with the service you normally use.
Do not use national or state averages to identify a specific cheapest station. The US Energy Information Administration’s weekly estimates represent sampled, volume-weighted geographic averages. Its methodology says the data represent prices at 8:00 a.m. local time on Monday, followed by error checks and verification, with publication generally around 10:00 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday (or Wednesday after a government holiday). Those figures describe an area, not a live station-by-station ranking.
Australia: comparison views, map apps and retailer offers
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) consumer guide describes fuel-price services with map and list views, sorting by proximity and price, and navigation-app station prices. Use the combined information: a close station with a slightly higher price may cost less than a distant station after the detour is counted.

The ACCC guide says Google Maps can display a note when a listed price is more than 24 hours old. It also says the ACCC could not confirm the source of fuel prices shown in Google Maps and Waze in the guide’s publication context. Check the age label and corroborate an unusually low price before changing your route.
Retailer apps may offer discounts or price-lock features, but they can show only that retailer’s branded stations. The ACCC guide gives 7-Eleven Fuel Lock as an example with specific limits and terms. Those conditions can change, so read the current offer in the retailer’s app and confirm that the locked price applies to your fuel type, location and purchase window.

- Displayed price: Identify the unit (litre or gallon) and currency before comparing numbers from different countries or services.
- Grade label: Confirm petrol, diesel, regular, premium or the exact octane level.
- Distance: Use driving distance, not a straight-line map radius, when deciding whether a stop is convenient.
- Updated time: Prefer a recent timestamp; a price with no time marker deserves confirmation.
- Payment note: Look for cash, debit, credit, loyalty, app or membership conditions.
- Station status: Check hours, temporary closures and whether the listing is a club or restricted station.
- Source quality: Know whether the figure comes from a government feed, retailer, map partner or member report.
When two services disagree, do not automatically pick the lower number. Prefer the report with the clearer timestamp and matching payment terms, then check a third source or the station’s roadside sign if the difference affects a long detour.
Choose the cheapest total stop, not the cheapest headline
On a normal local trip
Start with stations within a small driving radius and sort by a combined price-and-distance option if your service provides one. Compare the two or three closest candidates manually when it does not. A one-cent-per-unit saving on a small top-up is rarely worth a separate trip; a larger saving on a planned full tank may justify a modest deviation.

On a commute
Search along the commute in both directions. A station you pass without leaving the road has a lower detour cost than one that is technically closer to home but requires backtracking. Check opening hours against your departure and return times, and consider whether a queue or payment restriction undermines the apparent saving.

On a long journey
Set the destination or route in the comparison tool and identify several alternatives rather than one “cheapest” stop. Prices can change between your search and arrival. Keep a backup station within a reasonable distance, especially in rural areas or outside normal opening hours. A slightly higher price at a dependable, open station can be cheaper than a long diversion after a listing proves stale.
Common failure modes and fixes
The lowest listing is missing when you arrive
Possible causes include an old member report, a cash-only price, a grade mismatch or a filter hiding the station. Reset filters, inspect the timestamp, switch to the correct payment basis and compare another source before driving back.
A map app shows a surprisingly cheap price
Check whether the app labels the price as older than 24 hours or provides no source. Look up the same station in a government or dedicated fuel-price service. If the saving is small, use a confirmed nearby option instead of making a special journey.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A national average looks cheaper than local stations
Area averages, including the EIA weekly estimate, are not station rankings. Use them only to understand broad market movement; use a local, station-level listing to choose where to buy.
A filter removes the station you expected
Brand, rating, amenities and club-station filters can hide results. Clear filters, zoom out on the map and then reapply only the restriction that matters to you.
The price changes before you reach the pump
Prices can move after any service’s last update. Save a second nearby option, avoid detours based on a tiny margin and verify the forecourt sign when you arrive. In the UK, the 30-minute publication rule describes how quickly participating stations must submit changes, but your app may still have a refresh delay.
A repeatable checklist before you leave
- Confirm the country-specific service covers your area.
- Search your location, route or destination.
- Select the exact fuel type and grade.
- Record price, distance and update time for at least two stations.
- Check cash, card, loyalty and membership conditions.
- Calculate gross savings for the amount you will buy.
- Subtract the fuel cost of the extra driving and account for time or tolls.
- Verify hours, station access and current availability.
- Keep a backup station if the saving depends on an old or crowd-reported entry.
Used consistently, this checklist turns a price-finder app into a budgeting tool: you buy the fuel your vehicle needs, at a price you can actually obtain, from a station whose total trip cost is lower.
