How to Compare Gas and Electricity Plans When Energy Prices Are Volatile

Compare the annual cost each tariff would produce for your home’s actual gas and electricity use, then weigh that figure against the risk of future price changes. Multiply each fuel’s unit rate by your annual kWh, add standing charges for 365 days and unavoidable fees, and subtract only discounts you can definitely claim. A fixed tariff buys price certainty for a stated term; a variable tariff preserves flexibility and potential savings if prices fall but leaves you exposed to increases.

What you are actually comparing

Every household energy tariff has two core prices for each fuel:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Unit rate: the price charged for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of gas or electricity used.
  • Standing charge: a daily amount charged whether or not you use energy.

Your bill is therefore driven by both consumption and contract terms. The regulated price cap in Great Britain limits the unit rates and standing charges that suppliers can charge on standard variable tariffs; it does not cap your total bill. If you use more energy, your bill rises. A household using twice as many kWh will generally pay much more even when both homes are covered by the same cap.

Do not treat a supplier’s monthly direct-debit quote as a tariff price. It is a payment estimate based on assumed consumption, account balance and billing preferences. Use the published unit rates, standing charges and contract conditions to calculate a comparable annual figure.

Fixed, variable, dynamic and indexed pricing

Fixed tariffs

A fixed contract keeps the agreed price structure for a defined period. Confirm exactly what is fixed: some offers fix unit rates but reserve the right to alter standing charges or pass through specified network, tax or policy components. Record the term, exit fee and what happens when the term ends. A fixed tariff can cost more than a variable alternative during a falling market, but it protects your budget from rises during the fixed period.

Standard variable tariffs

A standard variable tariff can change when market conditions and the regulator’s cap change. It usually has no long fixed commitment, which makes switching easier, but your annual cost can move at each price-change date. Check how much notice the supplier gives and whether your payment method changes the capped rates.

Dynamic or time-linked tariffs

Dynamic and index-linked plans tie prices to an external reference, such as wholesale prices or a published index. Before signing, identify the reference, update frequency, notification method and any maximum or minimum rate. A plan that looks cheap at one moment may produce materially different bills later. You need realistic high and low scenarios, not just the current advertised rate.

The European Commission advises consumers to identify whether a contract is fixed, variable, dynamic or index-linked and to check the total price for estimated annual consumption rather than focusing only on an advertised discount.

Step 1: Build a reliable consumption baseline

Use the latest 12 months of actual meter readings or smart-meter data for gas and electricity. A full year captures seasonal heating demand and avoids comparing one unusually mild or cold period with another. If you have less than 12 months of readings, use the longest reliable period and mark the estimate as uncertain.

Write down the following before requesting quotes:

  • Annual electricity kWh and annual gas kWh, kept separate.
  • Your region in Great Britain.
  • Meter type, including Economy 7 or another time-of-use meter.
  • Payment method, such as direct debit, standard credit or prepayment.
  • Current tariff end date, renewal terms and any exit fee.
  • Any eligibility conditions you rely on, such as a smart meter, paperless billing or a specified payment method.

Ofgem notes that capped costs vary by region, payment method, fuel and meter type. A national average is therefore a reference point, not a personal quote. If your home has changed—new heating equipment, insulation, an electric vehicle or a change in occupancy—model a second, forward-looking consumption case instead of relying only on the previous year.

Step 2: Calculate an annual cost for every plan

Keep gas and electricity calculations separate, then combine them. For each candidate tariff use:

Component Calculation
Electricity usage Annual electricity kWh × electricity unit rate
Electricity standing charge Electricity daily charge × 365
Gas usage Annual gas kWh × gas unit rate
Gas standing charge Gas daily charge × 365
Other costs Add unavoidable recurring or one-off fees
Discounts Subtract only discounts whose eligibility and payment conditions you can meet

The result is your estimated annual cost at the quoted rates. Use the same kWh for every plan so that the comparison isolates price and contract design rather than changing the assumed usage. If a supplier quotes different day and night rates, calculate each register separately. For a plan with a minimum charge, exit fee or mandatory service, include that amount in the annual comparison when it will apply.

A transparent worksheet

Create one row per tariff with columns for electricity unit rate, electricity standing charge, gas unit rate, gas standing charge, fees, certain discounts, estimated annual total and contract end date. Add a separate column for the assumptions behind each figure. This prevents a low headline unit rate from hiding an expensive standing charge or a conditional discount.

How to handle discounts

Apply a discount only when you know you qualify and can satisfy its conditions for the required period. A credit that depends on paperless billing, a particular payment method or uninterrupted direct debit is not guaranteed if your circumstances may change. Show the undiscounted and discounted totals when eligibility is uncertain; make the undiscounted figure your conservative comparison.

Step 3: Compare price risk, not just today’s total

Two plans with similar annual estimates can have very different financial consequences. Evaluate these dimensions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision axis Questions to ask
Expected annual cost What is the total for the same actual gas and electricity kWh, all charges included?
Price certainty Are unit rates and standing charges fixed, or can either change?
Downside tolerance Could a rise force you to cut essential spending or build debt?
Upside participation Would you benefit if market prices or the cap fall?
Flexibility What are the term, notice period, exit fee and rollover rules?
Usage fit Can you shift electricity use to cheaper periods, and will your meter support that?
Administrative fit Are the payment method, meter requirements, support and complaint route acceptable?

A fixed tariff is effectively an insurance purchase: you pay for a known rate and give up some benefit if prices fall. A variable tariff leaves you exposed to increases but avoids being locked into an expensive rate. There is no universal rule that one is always cheaper.

Step 4: Stress-test volatile prices

Run at least three cases using identical kWh:

  1. Quoted case: use the current rates and standing charges.
  2. Higher-rate case: increase the variable components by a percentage that would be painful but plausible for your budget. For a capped tariff, model a higher cap; for an indexed tariff, use the contract’s reference index and update rule.
  3. Lower-rate case: reduce the same components to show the savings available if prices fall.

For a fixed plan, add the premium over the cheapest quoted option and record the cost of leaving early. For a variable plan, show how the annual total changes when the cap or supplier rates move. These are decision scenarios, not forecasts: wholesale prices, regulatory decisions and supplier offers can change.

Assess cash-flow as well as the annual total. A household with little emergency savings may rationally choose a slightly higher fixed cost to avoid an unaffordable increase. A household able to absorb volatility may value the option to switch quickly when cheaper rates appear.

Standing charges: when they matter most

Standing charges accrue every day, so a low-use household pays a larger share of its bill in fixed costs. If you occupy a property only occasionally or have unusually low consumption, compare daily charges closely. A plan with a low unit rate can still be poor value when its standing charge is high.

High-use households are generally more sensitive to unit rates because each small change is multiplied by many kWh. Heating type, insulation, household size and electric-vehicle charging can make the unit rate the dominant factor. Calculate both components instead of applying a rule of thumb.

For a dual-fuel comparison, do not assume the cheapest electricity and gas offers come from the same contract. Compare a combined plan with separate single-fuel options, including any fees and the practical effort of managing two suppliers.

Published figures you can use as a reference

Ofgem’s announcement for the 1 January–31 March 2026 cap period gave illustrative average direct-debit rates of 27.69 pence per kWh for electricity and 5.93 pence per kWh for gas. It also gave average standing charges of 54.75 pence per day for electricity and 35.09 pence per day for gas across England, Scotland and Wales. These are regulated averages for that period, not a prediction of your bill: your region, meter, payment method and consumption determine your actual cost.

UK Government Quarterly Energy Prices, published in March 2026, reported that fixed dual-fuel bills were 1.8% lower in 2025 than in 2024, while equivalent variable bills were 0.2% higher. That historical comparison describes one period and does not establish which contract will be cheaper in the future.

  • Payment method, billing frequency and consequences of a failed payment.
  • Discount amount, eligibility, timing and clawback conditions.
  • Smart-meter, meter-type or time-of-use requirements.
  • Support for customers in vulnerable circumstances and the complaint route.

Do not compare a short promotional period with a full-year tariff without annualising the price after the promotion ends. If a plan’s terms do not explain how a variable or indexed rate is set, ask the supplier for the reference and update mechanism in writing.

Choosing a tariff under different conditions

When budget certainty is the priority

Favor a fixed structure when a rise would threaten rent, mortgage, food or debt payments and the premium is affordable. Keep enough flexibility for a move or major change in consumption, and price the exit fee before signing.

When flexibility and falling prices matter

A variable tariff can suit a household able to absorb increases and willing to monitor rates. Set a calendar reminder for cap-change dates, review your annual estimate after each change and keep meter readings current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the market is exceptionally volatile

Shorter commitments can reduce the risk of being locked into a bad rate. UK Government procurement guidance notes that in high-priced or volatile markets, buyers may consider contracts of no more than 12 months so they have time to make a more informed decision. A shorter term is not automatically cheaper; it is a flexibility choice.

When you can shift electricity use

Dynamic or time-of-use pricing may reward moving laundry, water heating or vehicle charging away from expensive periods. Confirm that your meter, appliances and routine can support the schedule. If you cannot shift use, model the tariff using your actual timing rather than the supplier’s best-case example.

Common comparison mistakes and their fixes

  • Using the monthly direct-debit amount: calculate from unit rates, standing charges and actual kWh instead.
  • Comparing only the electricity rate: include gas, both standing charges and every unavoidable fee.
  • Assuming the cap is a bill ceiling: remember that the cap limits rates, while consumption determines the total.
  • Counting a conditional discount as certain: show a conservative total without it unless eligibility is secure.
  • Ignoring meter structure: use separate day/night registers for Economy 7 or other time-of-use meters.
  • Choosing from one month’s prices: run higher and lower scenarios and record the contract’s update rule.
  • Forgetting the end of a fixed term: note the rollover rate and start shopping before the end date.
  • Using national averages as a quote: adjust for region, payment method, fuel and meter type.

A practical switching checklist

  1. Download 12 months of bills or meter data and total gas and electricity kWh.
  2. Record region, meter type, payment method, tariff end date and exit fee.
  3. Collect the unit rates, standing charges, fees and conditions for each candidate.
  4. Calculate each plan’s annual cost with the same consumption baseline.
  5. Apply only discounts you can definitely receive.
  6. Run quoted, higher-rate and lower-rate scenarios.
  7. Compare certainty, flexibility, usage fit and administrative requirements.
  8. Read and save the key-terms summary, cooling-off rules and rollover terms.
  9. Submit meter readings at the switch and keep confirmation of the agreed rates.
  10. Recheck the first bill against your worksheet; challenge discrepancies promptly.

The decision rule

Select the plan whose total annual cost and price-risk profile fit your household, not the plan with the most prominent discount or lowest single unit rate. A fixed tariff is worth its premium when certainty protects an essential budget; a variable or dynamic tariff is worth its exposure when you can tolerate rises, monitor changes and benefit from falling prices. Recalculate whenever your consumption, meter, payment method or contract end date changes.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
