Start with diluted GAAP net income and diluted EPS, then rebuild each company’s adjusted-earnings reconciliation line by line. GAAP is the common accounting anchor. Adjusted earnings are supplemental, issuer-defined measures, so two S&P 500 companies can use the same label while excluding very different costs.
A defensible comparison keeps the fiscal period, continuing-operations basis, currency, tax treatment and diluted-share denominator consistent. It also checks whether supposedly unusual exclusions recur. Use GAAP to judge reported profitability and trend integrity; use adjusted earnings to study management’s view of recurring operations. Present both.

GAAP and adjusted earnings answer different questions
GAAP is the common starting point
Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) prescribe how companies recognize revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities and equity. For an earnings comparison, record each issuer’s net income attributable to common shareholders and diluted EPS exactly as reported for the same period. Those figures incorporate costs that affected the company’s reported results, including depreciation, amortization, stock compensation, restructuring, impairments, litigation and financing costs.

It is not perfect for every analytical question, but it gives you a consistent accounting anchor and a denominator calculated under the issuer’s dilution rules.

Adjusted earnings are non-GAAP supplements
Adjusted net income, adjusted operating profit and adjusted EPS are numerical measures of historical or future performance, financial position or cash flow that are not defined by GAAP. Each company chooses its own labels and adjustment policy. One issuer may remove stock-based compensation; another may leave it in but exclude acquisition amortization and restructuring. Neither policy is automatically the correct one.
Management generally presents adjusted figures to show what it considers representative of ongoing operations or to improve period-to-period comparability. Federal Signal, for example, describes adjusted net income and adjusted diluted EPS as measures that remove items management considers unrepresentative. That explanation describes the issuer’s purpose, not a universal accounting rule.
Set comparable inputs before reading any adjustment
Many apparent differences come from mismatched inputs rather than economics. Create a collection sheet with these fields for every company:
- Fiscal period: use the same quarter, trailing twelve months or fiscal year. Note different year-ends and 52/53-week calendars.
- Operations basis: distinguish total company results from continuing operations and check how discontinued operations are treated.
- Currency: keep reported currency consistent or translate all figures using one documented convention.
- Profit measure: capture GAAP net income attributable to common shareholders, not an unrelated subtotal.
- Share basis: use diluted weighted-average shares for diluted EPS. Record whether participating securities, options, convertible instruments or noncontrolling interests affect the denominator.
- Tax basis: preserve the tax effect assigned to each adjustment rather than applying one blanket tax rate.
- Units and rounding: retain dollars, thousands or millions as reported and postpone rounding until the final EPS calculation.
If one company reports a calendar-year quarter and another reports a 13-week quarter ending on a different date, label the mismatch. Do not call the resulting growth comparison like-for-like without a qualification.
Build the reconciliation from GAAP to adjusted EPS
1. Capture the reported GAAP anchor
In the earnings release and filing, locate the income statement and the reconciliation table. Record GAAP diluted net income and diluted EPS before looking at management’s adjusted total. SEC guidance requires a registrant that presents a material non-GAAP measure to present the most directly comparable GAAP measure and reconcile the difference.

2. Put every adjustment on its own row
Do not accept a single “other adjustments” line as a complete analysis. Reproduce each component with its pretax amount, tax effect, after-tax amount and per-share effect. A useful worksheet has this structure:
| Bridge item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| GAAP diluted net income | Reported amount | Starting point for the bridge |
| Adjustment label | Exact issuer description | Prevents different items being combined |
| Pretax amount | Increase or decrease | Shows the gross economic item |
| Tax effect | Issuer-assigned tax benefit or expense | Determines the after-tax impact |
| After-tax adjustment | Pretax amount plus tax effect | Should reconcile to adjusted net income |
| Per-share effect | Issuer-reported or recomputed effect | Tests the EPS bridge |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | Final issuer measure | Comparison endpoint, not a GAAP measure |
Recompute the bridge: GAAP net income plus or minus each after-tax adjustment should equal adjusted net income, subject to disclosed rounding. Adjusted net income divided by the stated diluted share count should produce adjusted diluted EPS. Investigate any unexplained difference rather than forcing the numbers to tie.
3. Read the stated usefulness and purpose
Regulation S-K Item 10(e) requires an explanation of why a non-GAAP measure is useful and disclosure of additional purposes for which management uses it. Copy that rationale into your notes, then test whether the exclusions actually fit it. A measure described as showing recurring operations should not quietly remove a cost that recurs every quarter.
Classify what each company removes
Use two classifications at the same time. First identify the accounting category; then assess whether the item is economically recurring and whether cash changed hands.
| Common exclusion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Acquisition and integration costs | How many acquisitions occurred, and does the company incur integration spending every year? |
| Purchase-accounting amortization | Is the amortization tied to acquired assets that continue to support revenue and cash flow? |
| Restructuring and severance | Is this a discrete program or a recurring cycle of reorganizations? |
| Stock-based compensation | Are grants a continuing component of employee pay and dilution? |
| Impairments | Was the write-down a rare event, or does the company repeatedly overpay and revalue assets? |
| Litigation and settlements | Is the matter isolated, or does the business face a regular stream of claims? |
| Gains or losses on disposals | Does management routinely sell businesses or investments? |
| Debt-extinguishment costs | Was the refinancing exceptional, and are similar transactions part of the capital strategy? |
| Tax adjustments | Is the item a discrete tax event, a valuation-allowance change or a recurring cash-tax difference? |
“Non-cash” does not mean “not an economic cost.” Depreciation, amortization, stock compensation and impairments can represent resources consumed, assets that lost value or dilution borne by shareholders. Conversely, a cash charge can be genuinely unusual. Classify cash behavior separately from recurrence.

Check whether “one-time” items keep returning
Search the history
Read prior-year reconciliations in the same filing and earlier filings. Build a three- to five-year log, when available, with the adjustment name, amount and stated reason. Similar labels may change—“transformation,” “optimization,” and “restructuring” can describe related programs—so read the footnote narrative as well as the table.

Decide how to normalize
If an exclusion appears repeatedly, treat it as a candidate recurring cost in an analyst-defined measure. Keep the issuer’s reported adjusted figure beside your normalized figure. Do not silently overwrite management’s number: the distinction tells readers exactly where your judgment differs.
- Keep in earnings: recurring compensation, ordinary maintenance investment and routine restructuring.
- Consider excluding: a demonstrably isolated disposal gain, a rare settlement or a single accounting event with no continuing operating effect.
- Flag for sensitivity: large impairments, acquisition costs and purchase-accounting amortization when the company’s strategy makes them frequent.
Make peer comparisons on a common policy
Issuer-reported adjusted EPS is comparable only when the definitions are sufficiently alike. Before ranking companies, create a policy that applies to every peer. For example, you might exclude a clearly documented, nonrecurring disposal gain but retain stock compensation, recurring restructuring and acquisition amortization. Apply that rule consistently and disclose exceptions.
| Comparison axis | Required check |
|---|---|
| Definition and scope | List every excluded category; do not compare labels alone. |
| Recurrence | Review prior periods for repeated “one-time” items. |
| Cash economics | Mark each item cash or non-cash without treating either label as a quality verdict. |
| Tax treatment | Use the issuer’s specific tax effect or a consistently documented analyst rate. |
| Dilution | Use diluted shares under the same period and attribution rules. |
| Operations basis | Match continuing operations and treatment of discontinued operations. |
| Period consistency | Align fiscal dates, week counts and currency. |
| Transparency | Prefer a full, numerically tieable reconciliation over a summarized adjustment. |
| Growth and valuation | Calculate both GAAP and adjusted changes and multiples. |
When definitions cannot be harmonized, show issuer-reported adjusted EPS as context but base the cross-company ranking on your common policy—or state that no reliable ranking is possible.
Get tax and diluted-share effects right
Tax effects are not a footnote detail
An adjustment’s pretax amount is not its impact on shareholders. Companies may assign a tax benefit, tax expense or no tax effect depending on jurisdiction, deductibility and the nature of the item. Use the disclosed after-tax amount whenever available. If you estimate a tax effect, label it as your estimate and apply the same rule to every company.

The denominator can change the conclusion
Adjusted EPS may use a diluted share count that differs from the GAAP presentation if the reconciliation spans a different income level or includes instruments that become dilutive. Verify the stated weighted-average diluted shares and whether noncontrolling interests are removed. Never divide one company’s adjusted net income by another company’s GAAP share count or substitute basic shares because they are easier to find.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use GAAP and adjusted results in growth and valuation
Growth
Calculate year-over-year change under both measures:
Growth = (current-period EPS ÷ prior-period EPS) − 1
Explain the driver of any gap. Adjusted growth may be higher because a prior period contained an impairment, or lower because the current period contains an exclusion that did not occur previously. A widening gap caused by repeated exclusions is a warning about comparability, not proof of improving operations.

Valuation

P/E = share price ÷ EPS
Use GAAP EPS for a valuation anchored to reported profitability and adjusted EPS for a scenario based on the company’s stated recurring-operations view. Label the denominator, period and adjustment policy in every table. Do not present an adjusted multiple as though it were a standardized market statistic.

Understand the SEC guardrails
Regulation G applies when a registrant publicly discloses material information containing a non-GAAP measure. The company must present the most directly comparable GAAP measure and reconcile the differences. Item 10(e) also requires the comparable GAAP measure to receive equal or greater prominence, an explanation of usefulness and disclosure of additional management uses.
Regulation S-K restricts practices that can mislead investors. The rules address misleading titles, adjustments that smooth recurring or recently recurring items, and exclusion of cash-settled charges from non-GAAP liquidity measures, subject to specified EBIT and EBITDA treatment. These requirements concern the issuer’s presentation; they do not turn adjusted EPS into a standardized measure for peer analysis.
Illustrative bridge (method, not a company result)
Suppose an issuer reports GAAP diluted net income of 100 million currency units and removes a 12 million pretax restructuring charge with a 3 million tax benefit, plus 8 million of after-tax acquisition costs. The bridge is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Step | Amount (millions) |
|---|---|
| GAAP diluted net income | 100 |
| Restructuring, after tax (12 − 3) | 9 |
| Acquisition costs, after tax | 8 |
| Adjusted net income | 117 |
The analyst would then divide 117 million by the issuer’s disclosed diluted weighted-average shares, not by a basic or estimated denominator. The example demonstrates the arithmetic only; it says nothing about whether either exclusion is appropriate. That judgment requires the company’s rationale and its historical pattern.
What published company supplements can and cannot tell you
Large issuers often publish several non-GAAP series. S&P Global’s fiscal 2025 supplement, for example, lists adjusted operating profit and margin, adjusted net income, adjusted diluted EPS, free-cash-flow variants, EBITDA, adjusted EBITDA, adjusted net debt and adjusted deal-related amortization, with reconciliations to corresponding GAAP measures in its releases and supplement. The existence of many measures reinforces the need to identify the exact metric and reconciliation before comparing it with a peer’s “adjusted EPS.”
There is no broadly applicable S&P 500-wide prevalence rate or aggregate dollar total for adjustments established by the authoritative material used here. Do not infer a portfolio-wide statistic from issuer-specific tables.
A practical review checklist
- Save the filing and reconciliation for the identical fiscal period.
- Record GAAP net income attributable to common shareholders and GAAP diluted EPS.
- Confirm continuing operations, currency, units and fiscal-week alignment.
- Copy every adjustment into a separate bridge row.
- Capture pretax, tax, after-tax and per-share effects.
- Recompute adjusted net income and adjusted diluted EPS to test the tie-out.
- Read management’s usefulness explanation and stated internal uses.
- Tag each item by recurrence, cash status, operating or financing nature and category.
- Search earlier reconciliations for repeated exclusions.
- Apply one documented adjustment policy across all peers.
- Calculate growth and valuation under both GAAP and your adjusted policy.
- Report the definition, denominator, period and unresolved limitations beside every conclusion.
How to interpret the final comparison
A high adjusted EPS relative to GAAP EPS is not automatically evidence of aggressive reporting; it may reflect a genuinely isolated event. A small gap is not automatically conservative if recurring costs remain in a broad “other” category. The strongest comparison is transparent about what was removed, why it was removed, how often it returns, what tax and dilution did to the result, and how the conclusion changes under GAAP.
