To compare flights accurately, hold the dates, airports, passengers, cabin and itinerary requirements constant; then compare the complete price for the bags, seats and flexibility you actually need. Check the fare rules, connection risk and seller before paying. A search site is useful for finding options, but the airline or booking site’s final checkout page controls the price and conditions you can buy.
Define the trip before comparing prices
Price comparisons fail when the offers represent different journeys. Write down the requirements that must remain unchanged before opening a search page. This prevents a cheaper but impractical itinerary from appearing to win.

Fix the airports and route
Enter the exact origin and destination airports whenever possible. An alternate airport can produce a lower fare while adding parking, ground transportation, a longer drive or an international border crossing. If you are willing to use a nearby airport, include it as a separate scenario rather than mixing it into the main comparison. Record the airport for every leg, including return flights.
Fix dates, passengers and cabin
Use the same departure and return dates, passenger count, traveler ages and cabin class in every search. A one-way result cannot be compared with a round trip, and a fare for one adult is not comparable with a total for a family. Keep the currency and country of sale consistent as well; taxes, payment methods and available fares can vary by market.

State the itinerary limits
Decide in advance whether nonstop travel is required, how many stops you will accept, and whether a self-transfer is allowed. Also set a practical minimum connection time. A result that changes airports between flights or requires you to collect and recheck luggage is a different risk profile from a protected connection on one ticket.
Use a broad search, but do not treat it as exhaustive
A flight-search service is a fast way to discover airlines, dates and routing combinations. Google Flights says its service compares offers from more than 300 travel partners. That coverage is useful for an initial market view, but Google also warns that results may not reflect every available offer. A carrier’s own site, a regional seller or a fare released after the search may be absent.
Understand “Best” and “Cheapest” results
Google Flights describes Best results as a balance of price, convenience and ease of booking. Cheapest results prioritize the lowest price and can include trade-offs such as a self-transfer, separate tickets, different airports on the outbound and return, or a booking process involving an online travel agency. Read the itinerary details instead of assuming that the first price is the best value.

Apply the same filters and sort options for each scenario. Open the offer you would actually buy, follow the booking link and confirm the final fare with the seller. Search pages can become stale while seats are being sold, and a displayed result does not guarantee that the fare remains available at checkout.
Compare equivalent itineraries line by line
Before comparing money, compare the journey. Copy the following fields into a worksheet for every serious option:

The U.S. Department of Transportation advises considering connections, alternate airports and on-time performance when evaluating airfare. Treat a self-transfer as a separate product: allow time to deplane, collect bags, travel to the next airport or terminal, check in again and clear security.

Calculate the price you will actually pay
For airfare advertised in markets covered by U.S. DOT rules, the displayed ticket total must include applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier-imposed surcharges. The total price must be more prominent than the breakdown of those charges. That rule makes the headline airfare a useful starting point, but it does not make every trip cost-comparable.
Add only the optional services you need
Bags, advance seat selection and other optional services can cost extra. For a fair comparison, add the same necessary services to each option. Do not add a service merely because a site preselects it; DOT explains that optional services cannot be automatically added through preselection. If you normally travel with a checked bag, price that bag on every fare. If you are content with an assigned seat, do not add paid seat selection to one option and not another.
Build a personal total-cost worksheet
Use one row per fare and calculate:
- Displayed ticket total for all passengers.
- Required baggage fees for the bags you will bring.
- Seat fees only if selecting seats is important to you.
- Ground transportation or parking caused by a different airport.
- Expected costs of a self-transfer, such as an overnight stay or a new ticket if a separate connection is missed.
- Any payment or foreign-exchange cost that the seller discloses at checkout.
Keep the seller’s currency and fee descriptions beside your calculation. Optional-fee schedules can change, and the amount shown for a particular passenger, route or fare family is more reliable than a generic fee chart.
Compare scenarios, not just one number
Sometimes the right answer depends on what happens during the trip. Make separate totals for a “carry-on only” traveler and a “checked bag” traveler if those needs differ within your group. Likewise, compare a flexible fare with a restricted fare only after deciding what a change or cancellation would cost. A lower initial price is not automatically cheaper if you are likely to buy add-ons or alter the itinerary.
Read the fare conditions before choosing
Fare names are not standardized across airlines, so open the detailed rules for each offer. Discounted or basic tickets generally have stricter conditions, which can include no refund, limited or no checked baggage, and no advance seat assignment.
Refundability and cancellation
Look for the exact words governing a voluntary cancellation. “Nonrefundable” does not necessarily mean every tax or fee is forfeited, and a credit may have an expiration date or change restrictions. Record whether a refund returns to the original payment method, whether a credit is issued, and who must process the request.

Changes and rebooking
Check whether changes are permitted, the change fee, any fare difference, and the deadline for making a change. A ticket that permits changes but requires a large fare difference may be less useful than a slightly more expensive fare with clearer flexibility. Confirm whether missed-flight or no-show rules cancel later segments.
Baggage and seats
Verify the number and size of carry-ons, checked-bag allowance, weight limits and fees for each passenger type. Check whether seats are assigned automatically, selected at check-in or available only for an added charge. Families and travelers with accessibility needs should treat seat availability as a requirement, not an optional convenience.
Decide whether to book direct or through a booking site
There is no universal rule that an airline is always cheaper or that a booking site always offers the best deal. The meaningful comparison is the exact fare, rules and support arrangement shown by each seller.

What a direct airline booking can change
Booking on the operating airline’s site may make it simpler to manage seats, bags, schedule changes and irregular operations because the airline has the reservation relationship. That convenience is valuable only if the airline’s displayed fare has the same conditions as the outside offer. Compare the fare family, not just the flight number and headline price.
What an online travel agency booking can change
An outside booking site may display a different fare basis, combine carriers or issue separate tickets. Its customer-service process can be the first route for changes and refunds. Before payment, identify the legal seller and read the agency’s terms for cancellations, schedule changes and service fees.
Find the merchant of record
Look for the name of the entity charging your card and issuing the ticket. DOT says a ticket agent that is the merchant of record is responsible for ticket refunds when a refund is due for covered U.S. itineraries. Save the confirmation, fare rules, receipt and the merchant-of-record information. If a disruption occurs, those records help you contact the party responsible for the transaction.

A repeatable comparison workflow
- Write the search specification. Record airports, dates, passenger count, cabin, one-way or round-trip status, acceptable stops and whether self-transfer is prohibited.
- Run a broad search. Use a flight-search service to see nearby dates, airlines and routing patterns. Note whether the result is categorized as Best or Cheapest and inspect any warnings about separate tickets or airport changes.
- Create a shortlist. Keep only itineraries that satisfy your practical limits. Copy flight numbers, operating carriers, stops, elapsed time, connection duration and airports.
- Check the airline’s listing. Search the same flight and fare family on the operating carrier’s site when available. Do not assume that a similarly named fare includes the same bags, seats or change rights.
- Normalize the total cost. Add the baggage and seat services you genuinely need, plus measurable ground-transfer costs. Keep each option’s currency and passenger assumptions identical.
- Open the detailed rules. Confirm refundability, change deadlines, no-show treatment, baggage allowance and seat assignment before selecting a fare.
- Verify the seller. Follow the booking link to checkout, identify the merchant of record and confirm the final itinerary, passenger names and total. If the price or conditions changed, update the worksheet rather than relying on the earlier search result.
- Choose using your priorities. Weigh total cost, schedule, flexibility, baggage and seat needs, connection risk, airport convenience and confidence that the seller can support you.
- Save the evidence. Keep the receipt, fare rules, baggage terms, confirmation code and any price or policy disclosures until the trip is complete.
Use a decision table when prices are close

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing the lowest search result without opening it
Problem: The fare may involve a self-transfer, different airports or separate tickets. Fix: Expand the itinerary and record every segment and airport before treating it as an option.
Comparing a bare fare with a bundled trip
Problem: One traveler needs a checked bag and a seat, while the comparison uses only the base price. Fix: Apply the same required services to every fare and show a separate total for each travel scenario.
Assuming the search site lists every offer
Problem: Search coverage is broad but not exhaustive. Fix: Verify the shortlist with the seller, especially when a preferred airline or regional route is missing.
Ignoring the merchant of record
Problem: The traveler contacts the airline for a ticket sold by an agent, or contacts the agent for a ticket the airline sold directly. Fix: Save the receipt and identify the entity that charged the card before purchase.
Treating a connection as guaranteed
Problem: A self-transfer or separate-ticket connection can fail without the protections of a single ticket. Fix: Prefer a protected connection when the schedule matters; otherwise budget substantial time and understand who bears the replacement-ticket cost.

U.S. rules that affect a comparison
The consumer-protection points above describe U.S. Department of Transportation guidance for airfare advertising and qualifying travel within DOT’s jurisdiction. Other countries can apply different disclosure, refund and agency rules, so travelers booking elsewhere should check the rules that apply to their route and seller.
Displayed airfare and optional fees
For covered U.S. airfare advertising, applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier-imposed surcharges belong in the displayed total. Optional services remain separate and should be added only when you intend to buy them.
Refund responsibility
When a refund is due on a covered itinerary, DOT assigns responsibility to a ticket agent that is the merchant of record. That is why the seller’s identity belongs in your comparison notes, not just the airline name.

The qualifying 24-hour rule
DOT’s consumer FAQ describes a qualifying 24-hour hold-or-refund requirement. Eligibility depends on the purchase and seller circumstances, so read the offer’s terms and confirm whether you are being offered a no-cost hold or a refund option before relying on the rule.
Make the final choice with a simple threshold
After normalizing prices and conditions, decide which differences matter enough to pay for. For example, you might reject any itinerary with an airport change, require one checked bag to be included, or accept a longer journey only when the savings cover your ground-transport and time costs. Write those thresholds before booking so a prominently displayed low fare does not override your actual needs.
The best comparison is therefore a documented match: same trip, same services, same currency, same passenger assumptions and clearly stated seller terms. Use a search service to find possibilities, verify the offer at checkout, and select the option whose total cost and risk fit the journey you are truly taking.
