Immediate versus deferred tells you when income starts; fixed versus variable tells you how the contract value and payments are determined. An immediate annuity generally begins payments within one year of a premium payment. A deferred annuity has an accumulation period before withdrawals or annuity payments begin. Either timing can be paired with a fixed design or a variable design, so “immediate” is not the opposite of “fixed” and “deferred” is not the opposite of “variable.”
To compare contracts responsibly, hold the premium, start date, payment frequency, life-contingency choice, survivor protection, guarantee period, refund or death benefit, and inflation adjustment constant. Then compare the contractual income, every explicit and implicit cost, access to principal, investment and insurer risks, tax consequences, and the insurer’s claims-paying strength. A headline rate or first payment is not a complete comparison.

Start by separating the two dimensions
Immediate or deferred: the payment clock
An immediate annuity converts a premium into an income stream that generally starts within one year. The purchase is usually made with a lump sum, and the payment amount depends on the elected payout form, the premium, the annuitant’s age, and the insurer’s pricing at the time of purchase.
A deferred annuity has an accumulation phase. The contract may earn interest or investment returns before you elect income. You can later annuitize, take withdrawals if the contract permits them, or use another distribution option. The length of the deferral and the conditions for starting income are contract-specific.

Fixed or variable: the return and payment basis
A fixed annuity provides a minimum credited interest guarantee during accumulation. The insurer sets the credited rate under the contract, and a fixed payout option can provide level payments. The guarantee is an obligation of the issuing insurer, not a government deposit guarantee, and it is subject to that insurer’s financial strength and claims-paying ability.
A variable annuity places premiums in investment subaccounts selected by the owner. The account value can rise or fall with those investments. If the contract uses a variable payout option, income can also change with investment results and the contract’s payout formula. Investment risk remains with the owner, although insurer guarantees may apply to particular riders or benefits if the contract provides them.
Is an immediate annuity fixed or variable?
It can be either. A fixed immediate annuity promises a contractually determined payment under the selected payout form. A variable immediate annuity bases payments partly on the performance of chosen subaccounts, so payments may fluctuate. Ask the issuer to identify exactly which amount is guaranteed, which amount can change, and what event causes a change.
How each design can be used for retirement income
Fixed deferred annuity
During accumulation, the insurer credits interest subject to the contract’s minimum guarantee and any rate-setting provisions. A surrender schedule, withdrawal limits, or a market value adjustment may apply. When income begins, you may choose a payout form such as payments for one life, two lives, or a specified guarantee period. The income amount is determined by the contract and the option you elect, not simply by the current credited rate.
Variable deferred annuity
Your value follows the selected subaccounts after contract charges and investment performance. Subaccounts can lose value. The prospectus and contract disclose expenses, transfer rules, withdrawal terms, and any optional benefits. An income rider, if offered, has its own conditions and costs; a rider’s benefit base is not necessarily the amount you can withdraw as cash.
Fixed immediate annuity
You exchange a premium for payments that begin generally within a year. Level payments can create a predictable income floor, but a level payment can lose purchasing power if prices rise. Adding a period-certain, refund, survivor, or inflation-adjustment feature changes the initial payment, so compare quotes with the same election.
Variable immediate annuity
Payments begin on the immediate schedule but are linked to investment performance under the contract’s payout method. The initial payment and later adjustments must be evaluated together with subaccount expenses, mortality and expense charges, administrative fees, and the risk that payments decline when investments perform poorly.

| When can income start? | It may accumulate first, or it can be purchased as an immediate fixed annuity. | It may accumulate first, or it can be paired with a variable immediate payout. | Payments generally start within one year after the premium is paid. |
| What determines value or payments? | A minimum credited rate applies during accumulation; the insurer sets rates under the contract. A fixed payout can provide level payments. | Selected subaccounts determine value. Investment results can increase or decrease value and may change income. | The payout form, premium, start date, age, and elected guarantees affect the payment; a variable immediate option also reflects investment performance. |
| What costs matter? | Surrender charges, withdrawal limits, possible market value adjustments, and the economic effect of credited-rate rules. | Contract, mortality-and-expense, administration, underlying-fund, surrender, and optional-benefit charges. | The net payment cost of survivor, refund, guarantee-period, and inflation features. |
| Can money be accessed? | Only as the contract permits; surrender periods and withdrawal provisions are specific to the policy. | Withdrawals can reduce value and may incur charges; annuitization can restrict access. | After exchanging the premium for a payout stream, access to the principal may be limited or unavailable. |
| What risks need review? | Insurer claims-paying ability, inflation eroding level payments, and contract liquidity. | Investment losses, insurer claims-paying ability, rider conditions, and contract liquidity. | Longevity, survivor needs, inflation, and the irrevocability or limited liquidity of the elected payout. |
This is a comparison framework, not a ranking. Terms vary by insurer, product, state, age, premium, and election.
Define the retirement-income problem before requesting quotes
Set the required start date
Write down the month and year when you need income and whether the need is permanent or temporary. A contract that starts immediately is not automatically better than one that starts later; paying for income before it is needed can reduce liquidity, while delaying income can leave a gap that other assets must cover.
Set an income floor
Separate essential expenses from discretionary spending. Decide what portion of essential spending should be covered by contractual income and what portion can remain dependent on investments or cash reserves. This is a planning choice, not a regulator-prescribed formula. Keep enough liquid assets for emergencies, large known expenses, and years in which markets or variable payments are unfavorable.
Decide how long payments must last
Compare life-only, joint-life, period-certain, refund, and other available payout forms on equal terms. A life-only form may pay more initially but can end at the first death. A joint-life form can continue for a surviving spouse or partner but generally changes the starting amount. A guarantee period or refund feature can provide value to beneficiaries but usually changes the income. Read the exact definition of the survivor and death benefits; labels alone do not establish what is guaranteed.

Account for inflation
Ask whether payments are level or adjust according to a stated formula. An inflation adjustment generally lowers the initial payment relative to a level option, and the adjustment method may not match your household expenses. Compare the first payment and the later payment formula, not just the word “inflation” in a sales illustration.
Protect access to principal
List assets that must remain available for health costs, home repairs, family support, or unexpected spending. Once a premium is annuitized, many contracts do not permit withdrawals from the account. During accumulation, surrender charges, free-withdrawal limits, tax consequences, and penalties may apply. Confirm the actual schedule in the contract rather than relying on a general product description.
Request comparable annuity illustrations step by step
- Use one premium and one start date. Ask every issuer to illustrate the same premium, payment start date, payment frequency, and assumed tax status. If you are comparing immediate and deferred designs, request a separate illustration for each timing choice rather than treating different start dates as a price difference.
- Hold the payout election constant. Specify single life or joint life, the ages used, guarantee period, refund or death benefit, and inflation adjustment. A quote with a survivor benefit or guarantee period is not comparable with a life-only quote.
- Separate timing from risk. Record whether each quote is immediate or deferred. In a second column, record whether accumulation and payments are fixed, variable, or a combination. This prevents an immediate fixed quote from being compared with a deferred variable quote as though only the brand name changed.
- Request the net payment and the assumptions. Ask for the gross payment, deductions, payment frequency, date of the first payment, and every assumption used. For variable contracts, request the prospectus and the investment-return assumptions behind any illustration; do not treat hypothetical values as guarantees.
- List every cost and access rule. Obtain contract, administration, mortality-and-expense, fund, rider, surrender, transfer, and withdrawal charges where applicable. Ask about the free-withdrawal allowance, surrender schedule, market value adjustment, transfer restrictions, and the effect of a withdrawal on future income.
- Verify guarantees and the insurer. Mark each amount as guaranteed, non-guaranteed, or dependent on investment performance. Check the insurer’s financial information through your state insurance department and read the contract’s claims-paying language. An insurer guarantee is not the same as a government deposit guarantee.
- Compare alternatives and compensation. Ask what other strategies were considered, how the salesperson is compensated, and whether a recommendation replaces an existing annuity. Review a replacement for a new surrender period, additional charges, tax consequences, loss of existing benefits, and conflicts of interest.
Understand guarantees and who bears each risk
Insurer risk applies to fixed promises
The payment promise in a fixed annuity depends on the issuing insurer’s ability to pay claims. Investor.gov and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners explain that contract obligations are subject to the insurer’s financial strength. State guaranty associations have specific rules and limits and should not be treated as a blanket substitute for evaluating the insurer.

Investment risk applies to variable value and payments
Variable subaccounts can lose value, and the owner bears that investment risk. A contract may offer a rider or benefit with a guarantee, but the guarantee can be conditioned on elections, fees, withdrawals, or holding requirements. Identify the exact benefit base, waiting period, withdrawal formula, and termination conditions.
Read the word “guaranteed” precisely
Ask whether a stated amount is a minimum interest rate, a guaranteed income amount, a guaranteed death benefit, or merely an illustration assumption. A current credited rate can be changed under the contract even when a lower minimum is guaranteed. A variable illustration can show hypothetical growth without promising that result.
Compare explicit fees and economic costs
| Cost or constraint | What to ask | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Contract and administration charges | Is there an annual contract fee or administrative charge? Is it waived at a stated balance? | A small recurring charge reduces the value available for growth or the net income. |
| Mortality-and-expense or risk charges | Does the variable contract deduct a mortality-and-expense charge, and is it taken from the account or reflected in unit values? | The deduction affects the return required for the account to maintain value. |
| Underlying fund expenses | What are the expenses of each selected subaccount, and are lower-cost options available within the contract? | Fund expenses reduce investment results before any payout calculation. |
| Rider and optional-benefit fees | What does each rider cost, and can the fee change? What happens if you withdraw or stop the rider? | A rider may provide a valuable guarantee but can reduce cash value and income. |
| Surrender charges | How long does the surrender schedule last, what percentage applies each year, and are there free withdrawals? | Leaving early can cost money or limit access to principal. |
| Market value adjustment | Can the amount available on surrender change with interest rates? Under what dates and exceptions? | The amount received may differ from the account value shown on a statement. |
| Credited-rate or cap mechanics | For a fixed or indexed-style design, what rate is guaranteed, how is the current rate set, and what caps or spreads apply? | An attractive current rate may not be available for the full term or may carry a lower guaranteed minimum. |
Some fixed contracts have few separately itemized ongoing fees but still impose economic costs through surrender provisions or the interest credited. Compare the guaranteed and current values, not just the number of fee lines.
Evaluate payment forms, survivor protection, and liquidity together
Payment options are not interchangeable. A life-contingent option concentrates value in income while the annuitant is alive. A joint-life option addresses survivor income but changes the starting payment and the continuation terms. A period-certain or refund feature can direct value to beneficiaries if death occurs early, but the added protection affects the amount paid during life. Ask whether a death benefit is a return of premium, an account value, a stated amount, or another formula.
Check whether payments are monthly, quarterly, or another frequency; whether the first payment is immediate or delayed; and whether payments continue after a missed premium or a withdrawal. For a variable payout, ask how investment performance changes the next payment and whether there is a floor. For a fixed payout, ask whether the amount can ever change and under what contractual event.
Handle taxes and replacements carefully
Withdrawals, surrenders, exchanges, and annuity payments can have tax consequences, and an early distribution may also trigger a penalty depending on the owner’s circumstances. The contract and applicable tax rules determine the result. Before moving money, ask a qualified tax professional to review the transaction, especially when retirement-account assets, a replacement, or a large surrender is involved.
A replacement can start a new surrender period, add new charges, change death or income benefits, and create tax consequences. Obtain the existing contract’s current value, surrender value, benefit base, rider fees, and remaining guarantees before agreeing to replace it. Ask the salesperson to document why the new contract is expected to improve your stated objective after all costs.

Use the prospectus and contract, not just the illustration
For a variable annuity
Read the prospectus for subaccount expenses, contract charges, transfer restrictions, surrender provisions, investment options, and payout choices. The prospectus explains risks that a sales sheet may compress into a single projected line. Check whether the illustration assumes a constant return, excludes charges, or uses an assumption that is not guaranteed.
For a fixed annuity
Read the interest-crediting section, minimum guarantee, renewal-rate language, surrender schedule, withdrawal provision, and any market value adjustment. Identify the date on which a rate can change and whether the contract credits interest only if the premium remains in force for a stated period.

Read the election form for the exact payout duration, survivor continuation, guarantee period, refund or death benefit, payment frequency, and inflation adjustment. Once the election is effective, changing it or recovering the premium may be impossible or restricted. Treat the election as a permanent income decision unless the contract expressly provides flexibility.
A practical decision framework
- Need income within a year and prioritize a predictable floor: compare fixed immediate quotes with identical survivor, guarantee, refund, and inflation elections. Keep separate liquid reserves because the premium may not be accessible.
- Need income later and want a contractual accumulation guarantee: compare fixed deferred contracts, focusing on the minimum credited rate, rate-renewal rules, surrender schedule, and the conditions for converting to income.
- Need later income and accept market risk for investment exposure: compare variable deferred contracts by total charges, subaccount choices, withdrawal rules, and the precise terms and cost of any guaranteed-income rider.
- Need income that may change with investment results: evaluate a variable immediate option only after modeling payment variability, subaccount expenses, survivor terms, and the effect of poor returns.
- Cannot tolerate loss of access to principal: do not treat an annuity quote as suitable merely because its initial payment is high. First determine whether the contract allows the withdrawals you may need and whether surrender charges or adjustments apply.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Comparing unlike payout elections
Mistake: comparing a life-only payment with a joint-life or refund payment. Correction: request the same duration, survivor, death-benefit, and inflation terms from every issuer.
Calling every annuity “fixed” or “variable” based on timing
Mistake: assuming an immediate annuity must be fixed or a deferred annuity must be variable. Correction: record timing and payment basis as separate fields on your comparison sheet.
Focusing on the first payment
Mistake: choosing the largest initial amount without checking later adjustments, survivor continuation, guarantees, and costs. Correction: compare the complete payment schedule and the event that can change it.
Treating a current rate as permanent
Mistake: assuming a displayed credited rate is guaranteed for the entire contract. Correction: identify the minimum guarantee, rate-reset dates, and renewal provisions.

Ignoring liquidity

Overlooking total variable-annuity expenses
Mistake: comparing only the rider fee or only the fund expense. Correction: add contract, administration, mortality-and-expense, fund, surrender, and optional-benefit charges and ask how each is deducted.
Assuming an insurer guarantee is a bank guarantee
Mistake: treating a fixed annuity like a government-insured deposit. Correction: evaluate the insurer’s claims-paying ability and review information from your state insurance department.

Questions to take to an insurer or adviser
- When exactly does the first payment arrive, and can that date be changed?
- Which amounts are contractually guaranteed, and which depend on rates, subaccount performance, or an illustration assumption?
- What happens to payments if the owner, annuitant, or joint annuitant dies?
- What is the payment after every elected survivor, refund, guarantee-period, or inflation feature is included?
- What is the surrender schedule, free-withdrawal allowance, and market value adjustment?
- After annuitization, can any portion of the premium be withdrawn?
- What are the contract, administration, investment, surrender, and rider charges, and how are they deducted?
- For a variable contract, where is the prospectus and what investment risks do the selected subaccounts carry?
- What insurer information supports the company’s ability to meet its obligations?
- How are you compensated, and is this recommendation replacing an existing contract?
Bottom line
Compare annuities by the promise you need, not by the label that sounds most attractive. Fix the premium, start date, payout form, survivor and death-benefit terms, inflation treatment, and assumptions first. Then compare guaranteed and non-guaranteed income, total costs, access to principal, tax consequences, investment exposure, and the insurer’s claims-paying ability. A contract that looks best on a headline rate or initial payment can be inferior once those terms are made equivalent.
The SEC’s Investor.gov annuity guidance, its variable-annuity materials, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ annuity and retirement tools provide consumer questions and definitions; the NAIC annuity overview was updated September 30, 2026. Use those explanations as a starting point, then rely on the actual contract, disclosure, or prospectus for the terms that govern your purchase.
