The strongest way to compare electric-vehicle (EV) stocks is to connect three statements: how quickly revenue is growing, how much profit each sale produces, and how much cash the business retains after investment. Revenue growth by itself can reward a company that is selling cars below cost; a positive accounting profit can coexist with weak cash generation; and a large cash balance can disappear quickly when factories and product programs require heavy funding.
Build one comparable, same-period table from annual filings, calculate growth and free-cash-flow margins yourself, then test the result against segment mix, one-time charges, liquidity and financing needs. The examples below show why that process matters: Tesla reported substantial revenue, positive gross margins and positive calculated free cash flow for 2025, while Lucid reported 68% revenue growth but a negative 92.8% gross margin.

Start with a comparable data set
Use the latest completed annual filing as your base period. Annual data reduces the risk that a single quarter’s deliveries, incentives, inventory build or working-capital swing will dominate the comparison. Add quarterly releases afterward to identify whether the annual trend is improving or deteriorating.

- Use each company’s fiscal year-end and record the exact period. Do not mix a calendar-year result with a fiscal year that ends in a different month without labeling the mismatch.
- Convert currencies only when you can document the exchange-rate method; otherwise keep each company in its reporting currency and do not present a false precision ranking.
- Keep GAAP figures separate from non-GAAP figures. A company may exclude restructuring, stock-based compensation or other items, while another company leaves them in the measure.
- Mark every figure as reported or calculated. For example, operating cash flow and capital expenditures are reported values; free cash flow and free-cash-flow margin are calculations based on those values.
Fields to collect
Your worksheet should include fiscal year, total revenue, year-over-year growth, three-year compound annual growth rate (when available), automotive revenue, other revenue, total gross margin, automotive gross margin, operating income and margin, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, free cash flow, free-cash-flow margin, cash and investments, debt, deliveries and major non-recurring items.

Measure revenue growth, then test its quality
Calculate the basic rates
Year-over-year growth is:
(Current-year revenue − Prior-year revenue) ÷ Prior-year revenue × 100
For a longer view, use a three-year compound annual growth rate when four annual revenue observations are available:
(Ending revenue ÷ Beginning revenue)^(1 ÷ 3) − 1
A CAGR smooths unusually strong or weak years. It should supplement, not replace, the latest year-over-year rate, because a company can have a strong three-year history and a sharply slowing current business.
Separate volume, price and mix
EV revenue can rise for very different reasons. Break the change into:
- Vehicle volume: more deliveries or higher production.
- Pricing and mix: higher average selling prices, more premium models or fewer discounts.
- Regulatory credits: sales of credits that do not require an equivalent vehicle sale.
- Energy storage and generation: batteries, solar or related systems.
- Software and services: connectivity, subscriptions, repairs, charging and other recurring or ancillary revenue.
Tesla’s 2025 filing reports $94.827 billion of total revenue and presents automotive, energy-generation-and-storage, and services-and-other lines separately. That segmentation lets an analyst ask whether growth comes from vehicle deliveries or from businesses with different margins and capital requirements. Automotive regulatory-credit revenue is also disclosed as a distinct line; treat material credit sales separately rather than assuming they represent ordinary customer demand.

Lucid reported 2025 annual revenue of $1,353.8 million, up 68% from 2024, but its 2025 gross margin was negative 92.8%, improved from negative 114.3% in 2024. The arithmetic says sales expanded; the economics say the company was still selling at a very large loss before operating expenses. Such growth may be strategically useful if production is reaching scale, but it requires continuing access to cash and a credible path to lower unit costs.
When reviewing a fast-growing EV maker, ask whether each incremental vehicle is moving toward contribution profit. Look for average selling price, material cost per vehicle, warranty expense, freight, manufacturing utilization and inventory write-downs. If the filing does not disclose a measure, label it unavailable instead of inferring it from revenue.

Questions for a growth-quality checklist
- Did deliveries grow at roughly the same rate as revenue, or did price and mix do most of the work?
- Is growth coming from the core vehicle business or a newly consolidated energy, software or services segment?
- How much revenue comes from regulatory credits or other items that may fluctuate?
- Did incentives and discounts rise faster than deliveries?
- Does the company disclose a three-year CAGR, and does the latest year accelerate or decelerate from it?
Read gross margins by segment and over time
What gross margin tells you
Gross margin is revenue minus the direct cost of goods and services, divided by revenue. It indicates whether products cover direct costs before research and development, selling, general and administrative expenses, and other operating costs. A positive gross margin does not mean the company is profitable; a negative gross margin means each unit is losing money before corporate overhead.
Compare both total gross margin and automotive gross margin when energy, software or services are material. A high-margin software or energy segment can lift total margin while the vehicle operation remains weak. Conversely, a temporary mix shift toward lower-margin vehicles can depress total margin even if manufacturing efficiency is improving.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the direction, not just the level
Record at least three years of total and automotive gross margins when filings provide them. Then identify the drivers: factory utilization, battery costs, commodity prices, warranty provisions, price cuts, model mix, logistics and inventory charges. A margin moving from deeply negative toward break-even can be economically more important than a small difference between two already-profitable companies.
Tesla reported an 18.0% total gross margin and a 17.8% total automotive gross margin for 2025. The narrow difference means the reported total was not being lifted dramatically by non-automotive activities in that period, although the segment disclosures still matter for trend analysis.
Lucid’s negative 92.8% 2025 gross margin, despite improving from negative 114.3% in 2024, indicates that scale and production learning had not yet overcome direct costs. Treat the improvement as directionally positive, but do not call the business economically self-sustaining until gross margin approaches break-even and operating expenses and cash needs are covered.
Then move to operating margin
Operating margin includes research and development, selling and marketing, general and administrative costs, and other operating expenses. An EV manufacturer can improve gross margin while operating margin remains negative because it is funding factories, new platforms, autonomous-driving or software programs, retail infrastructure and service networks.
For each year, calculate:
Operating margin = Operating income ÷ Revenue × 100
Compare the change in operating expenses with revenue growth. Operating leverage is emerging when expenses grow more slowly than revenue without cutting necessary engineering or service capacity. A company that reaches positive gross margin only by deferring maintenance, reducing research or relying on temporary credits may not have a durable operating model.
Use cash flow to measure durability
Calculate free cash flow consistently
A practical definition is:
Free cash flow = Operating cash flow − Capital expenditures

Then calculate:
Free-cash-flow margin = Free cash flow ÷ Revenue × 100
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Tesla in 2025, the reported $14.747 billion of operating cash flow less $8.53 billion of capital expenditures produces calculated free cash flow of $6.217 billion. Dividing that by $94.827 billion of revenue gives a calculated free-cash-flow margin of approximately 6.6%. The result is useful only with the stated definition; companies can present or adjust free cash flow differently.
Lucid states that free cash flow provides useful information about cash generated after necessary capital expenditures, while also warning that companies, including others in the same industry, may calculate non-GAAP measures and key performance measures differently. Keep your own calculation beside the issuer’s measure and investigate any reconciliation.
Inspect the cash-flow statement behind the headline
- Operating cash flow: Check whether it is supported by earnings and recurring operations or by a temporary release of working capital.
- Capital expenditures: Separate maintenance spending from new factories, tooling, charging infrastructure and expansion projects.
- Working capital: Review inventory, accounts payable, customer deposits and supplier financing. A favorable swing can lift one year’s cash flow without changing long-run economics.
- Cash and investments: Compare liquidity with expected quarterly operating cash burn and committed capital spending.
- Debt and financing: Include maturities, interest, secured facilities, equity issuance and any dependence on a parent or strategic investor.
A company with negative free cash flow can still be investable if it has a well-funded, time-limited expansion plan and improving unit economics. A company with positive free cash flow can still be fragile if the result depends on a one-time deposit, delayed supplier payments or an unusually favorable inventory release.
Estimate a liquidity runway carefully
A simple runway estimate is:
Cash runway in years = Cash and investments ÷ Annualized negative free cash flow
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use an average of several recent quarters rather than one abnormal quarter, and add known factory or tooling commitments. If free cash flow is positive, do not assign an infinite runway: test whether growth plans will make capital expenditures rise and whether current cash generation is repeatable.
Make accounting adjustments without destroying comparability
Keep GAAP and non-GAAP in separate columns
Non-GAAP adjustments can clarify a recurring operating trend, but they can also remove real economic costs. Do not combine one company’s adjusted operating income with another company’s GAAP operating income. Present the reported measure first, then list each adjustment and its rationale.
Check stock-based compensation and depreciation
Stock-based compensation is non-cash when granted, but it can dilute shareholders and represent a continuing labor cost. Depreciation is non-cash in the current period, yet it reflects factories and equipment that must eventually be replaced. Rivian’s 2025 filing identifies $72 million of depreciation and amortization and $306 million of stock-based compensation within research and development. Record both in your adjustments schedule rather than treating either as automatically irrelevant.
Look for production-ramp and restructuring effects
New-model launches can create under-absorbed factory overhead, expedited freight, scrap, warranty provisions and inventory write-downs. Restructuring can temporarily reduce expenses while creating cash payments. Read the footnotes to decide whether an item is genuinely unusual, part of a repeated ramp cycle or likely to recur as the company expands.

Reconcile segment mix and eliminations
Intercompany sales, corporate costs and eliminations can make segment totals differ from consolidated revenue. Use the consolidated GAAP number for growth and cash-flow margins, then use segment data to explain the result. Never add segment revenue without checking the filing’s reconciliation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a decision framework for two or more EV stocks
After calculating the metrics, score each company on four separate axes rather than collapsing everything into one growth ranking.
1. Growth quality
- Three-year CAGR and latest year-over-year growth.
- Volume growth versus price and mix.
- Recurring vehicle, software, energy and service revenue versus credits or one-time items.
- Evidence that new capacity is translating into deliveries rather than inventory.
2. Profitability path
- Total and automotive gross-margin level and direction.
- Operating-expense growth relative to revenue.
- Time and milestones required to reach operating break-even.
- Whether margin improvement comes from durable cost reductions or temporary accounting items.
3. Cash durability
- Free-cash-flow margin using a consistent formula.
- Capital-expenditure intensity and committed expansion spending.
- Cash, investments, debt maturities and available financing.
- Dependence on equity issuance, customer deposits, supplier financing or a strategic parent.
4. Business mix and scale
- Share of revenue from automotive, energy, software and services.
- Production footprint, factory utilization and geographic exposure.
- Model concentration and the timing of upcoming launches.
- Whether non-automotive segments have different margins or capital needs.
A useful ranking has a written reason for each score. For example, “fast growth, negative unit economics and short cash runway” is materially different from “moderate growth, positive free cash flow and rising operating leverage.” The framework is designed to expose that difference, not to produce a universal winner.
Update the analysis without overreacting to one quarter
Refresh the annual base table when a new filing arrives. Between annual filings, review quarterly revenue mix, deliveries, gross margin, operating margin, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, inventory and liquidity. Tesla’s second-quarter 2025 investor summary presents sequential quarterly gross margin, operating margin and free-cash-flow figures; that type of sequence is useful for identifying a trend, but one quarter should not determine the investment conclusion.
Use a rolling view: compare the latest quarter with the same quarter a year earlier, calculate a trailing-four-quarter total, and note whether management’s production and spending guidance changed. Separate seasonal effects from genuine acceleration or deterioration.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Ranking by revenue growth alone
Problem: A small company can post a high percentage increase from a low base while losing heavily on every vehicle.
Fix: Place growth beside gross margin, operating margin and free-cash-flow margin, then inspect volume and pricing.
Using total margin when the business mix is changing
Problem: Energy, software or services can conceal weak automotive economics.
Fix: Compare total and automotive margins and explain the mix shift.

What this framework can and cannot tell you
Revenue growth, margins and cash flow reveal operating quality and financing risk; they do not determine whether a stock is cheap or expensive. A valuation comparison requires a defined peer universe, current market prices, share counts, enterprise value, balance-sheet detail and assumptions about future growth. Those inputs are outside this operating-metrics framework.
Use the framework to narrow the questions: Is demand producing healthy revenue, are direct costs moving toward sustainable coverage, and can the company fund its plan without repeated emergency financing? Only after those questions are answered should valuation and portfolio fit enter the decision.
