The cheapest-looking electric vehicle rental is not necessarily the cheapest trip. Compare the final quote for your exact dates, times, pickup and return stations, driver, vehicle category and mileage allowance, then check battery, charging, one-way, protection and payment terms in the reservation agreement.
EV rentals add costs and restrictions that ordinary car-rental comparisons can miss: a charge shortfall at return, public-network or idle fees, required return locations, and equipment that may or may not be supplied. Use the process below to compare like-for-like offers before you enter payment details.

Start with identical trip details
Open each quote with the same inputs. A daily rate is meaningful only when the underlying rental is the same.

- Dates and times: Enter the exact pickup and return date and time. Changing the time can alter the number of billable days, after-hours fees and vehicle availability.
- Pickup and drop-off stations: Select the actual airport, downtown branch or other station. A different station can change taxes, location surcharges, inventory and whether an EV may be returned there.
- Driver information: Enter the driver’s age and list every additional driver. Young-driver and additional-driver charges can be mandatory rather than optional.
- Vehicle category: Compare the same class or a specific model only when the booking guarantees that model. An “electric SUV” category can contain vehicles with different battery sizes, connectors and luggage capacity.
- Mileage: Record the included mileage or kilometre allowance and the overage rate. A quote with unlimited mileage may be cheaper for a long route even when its daily rate is higher.
Save a screenshot or PDF of each quote before checkout. The price and terms displayed at search can differ from the agreement attached to the completed reservation.

Compare the all-in price, not the headline rate
European Commission consumer guidance published in the Official Journal in 2021 identifies the total booking price, mileage, fuel policy, cancellation, deposits and insurance-waiver terms as material rental information. Apply the same discipline to an EV quote: put every unavoidable amount in one comparison sheet.

Use the final amount shown immediately before payment where possible. If a cost is described only in terms, write “amount determined under the rental agreement” rather than treating it as zero.
Battery pickup and return rules
Ask four separate questions: What charge level will the vehicle have at pickup? What level is required at return? Is there a grace band? How is a shortfall priced?

SIXT’s help article describes a fully charged pickup and a standard full-to-full policy: “The full-to-full policy applies: pick up with a full charge and return with a full charge.” It also describes a service fee for each missing kilowatt-hour and a prepaid option that permits return at any charge level. The renter pays charging costs during the rental. Those details are from the cited help page and may not apply to every country, vehicle or reservation.
Minimum-return policies
Budget’s reviewed US EV terms require the vehicle to be returned with at least 70% battery. The page states: “Your EV must be returned to Budget with a battery charge level of at least 70%.” This is a provider- and agreement-specific requirement, not an industry standard. A 70% rule is materially different from full-to-full: you should not pay to fill the final 30% if the contract does not require it, but you must leave enough time to reach the stated minimum.

Questions to put in writing
- Is the pickup level guaranteed, or merely an expected range?
- Does the return requirement use a percentage, a full battery, a displayed range or another measurement?
- Is there a grace band for a small shortfall?
- Is the fee based on missing kilowatt-hours, a fixed service charge, electricity cost, or a combination?
- Can you buy prepaid charging, and does it remove all return-level charges?
- Is excess energy credited if you return above the required level?
- What happens if a charger is unavailable, broken or occupied near the return station?
Save the battery reading and take time-stamped photos at pickup and return. They do not override the contract, but they create a record of the vehicle’s condition and charge level if a dispute arises.
Calculate charging costs during the rental
Separate the energy you expect to buy from charges the rental company may bill after the vehicle is returned.
Public charging and company accounts
Determine whether you pay the charging operator directly, use a rental-company account or fob, or receive a later charge on the rental invoice. Ask whether the company adds a convenience or administrative fee. A network account can simplify access but may cost more than paying the operator yourself.
Tesla Supercharger and idle charges
Hertz and Budget terms say some Tesla Supercharger use and idle fees can be billed back to the renter. The reviewed Budget page says its described Tesla charging charges include a 2.3% administrative fee. Avis’s reviewed US EV terms also describe pass-through Tesla charging and idle fees with a 2.3% administrative fee. These figures apply to the cited provider terms, not to every charging network or rental.
Idle fees are charged when a vehicle remains connected after charging is complete or when a station’s rules otherwise classify it as occupying a space. Ask who receives the network’s original invoice, how long the rental company takes to pass it through, and whether the administrative percentage applies to idle fees as well as energy.

Estimate a realistic charging budget
- Map the route and identify charging stops compatible with the vehicle’s connector and access requirements.
- Allow for charging needed to reach the return station, not only the distance between overnight stops.
- Reserve a time buffer for queues, slower-than-expected charging and a failed station.
- Record the payment method at each network and any roaming or account requirement.
- Add the contract’s return shortfall fee and possible network or idle fee to your comparison sheet.
Do not turn these terms into a universal EV-versus-petrol savings calculation. Actual energy prices, route length, weather, vehicle efficiency and station pricing differ by trip, and the published rental terms do not establish a general cost advantage.
Check whether the route and return plan are allowed
One-way EV rentals
One-way availability must be verified for the exact EV reservation, not inferred from a company’s general car-rental policy. Budget and Avis’s reviewed US EV terms require return to the renting location. Their terms therefore rule out a convenient airport-to-city or city-to-city itinerary unless the specific agreement says otherwise.
Enterprise’s general US one-way guidance says eligible routes can carry a variable drop or mileage fee and that “The drop charge fee varies by rental pickup location, rental return location and other factors.” That guidance is not EV-specific permission. Confirm that the vehicle category and stations you selected are both eligible before relying on it.
Other route restrictions
- Confirm the authorized driving area and whether crossing a state, provincial or national border needs approval.
- Ask whether the vehicle may be taken on ferries, gravel roads or other restricted routes relevant to your itinerary.
- Check the late-return process. A missed return window can trigger another rental day, a different station charge or a battery-related service fee.
- Ask what roadside assistance will do if the battery reaches zero or a charging stop fails. Towing an EV to a compatible charger may be handled differently from refuelling a conventional car.
Review insurance, deposit and cancellation terms
EV technology does not remove ordinary rental risks. Compare the protection package line by line.
Protection and excess
Record the liability limit, collision or loss waiver, excess or deductible, glass and tyre treatment, theft exclusions, underbody damage rules and excluded drivers. A waiver can reduce the amount you owe after damage without covering every component or circumstance. If you use travel insurance or a credit-card benefit instead, verify that it covers electric vehicles, the rental country, the vehicle’s value and the contract’s required waiver conditions.

Deposit and card requirements
Note the preauthorization amount, card network accepted, whether a physical card is required, and when the hold is released. A debit card, prepaid card or virtual card may be rejected even when the booking website accepts it for payment. Keep enough available credit for the deposit and any charging charges that can be added later.
Cancellation and changes
Compare the cancellation deadline in the destination’s local time, the refund method, no-show treatment and the cost of changing dates or stations. A prepaid quote can be cheaper but less flexible. Record whether a change causes the reservation to be repriced at the current EV rate.

Charging cable and connector
SIXT says the EV rental described on its help page includes a Type 2 cable. That does not establish that every provider, model or market supplies one. Ask whether the cable is included, which connector it uses, whether a portable charging lead is different from a public fast-charging connector, and what happens if the cable is missing or damaged.
Passengers, luggage and range
Check the actual vehicle class against passenger and luggage needs. EV body styles can have different cargo layouts even when they share a category name. Treat the dashboard range as an estimate rather than a guarantee: speed, temperature, terrain, payload and use of heating or air conditioning affect energy consumption. Select charging stops with a reserve rather than planning to arrive at a station with the displayed range at zero.

Make sure the route’s charging network accepts your payment method or that the rental company’s account covers it. A connector that fits physically may still require a local app, account or identification card. If you are travelling internationally, verify roaming availability and the currency in which charging transactions will appear.

Rental policies can change by location, vehicle and reservation. The agreement attached to your booking controls what you owe.
Use a one-page comparison worksheet
For each offer, fill every field before choosing. If a field cannot be answered, treat that uncertainty as a cost or booking risk rather than silently assuming the most favourable outcome.
- Trip: dates, times, pickup station, return station, route and expected mileage.
- Vehicle: category or guaranteed model, passenger count, luggage, estimated usable range and connector.
- Price: rental total, taxes, mandatory location fees, mileage, driver fees, one-way charge and selected add-ons.
- Battery: pickup level, return level, grace band, shortfall formula, prepaid option and excess-energy treatment.
- Charging: who pays, networks accepted, account or fob, administrative fee, idle-fee responsibility and post-rental billing.
- Return: permitted station, opening hours, late-return rule, required documentation and assistance process for a low battery.
- Protection: liability, waiver, excess, exclusions, deposit, card requirement and cancellation deadline.
- Equipment: cable type, included accessories and replacement charges.
- Evidence: quote version, terms link or PDF, date checked and the name of the representative who confirmed an ambiguous item.
Red flags that deserve a call before payment
- The headline rate is prominent but the final total is unavailable until late in checkout.
- The battery rule says “return charged” without a percentage, measurement method or fee.
- A charging account is mentioned but the administrative, network or idle-fee formula is absent.
- The booking engine allows a different return station even though EV terms may require return to the renting location.
- The vehicle category is shown without a connector, cable or realistic range description.
- The deposit, accepted card or cancellation deadline appears only after payment.
- A staff member gives a verbal exception that is not reflected in the reservation agreement.
Ask for written confirmation attached to the reservation when a term matters to your budget or itinerary. If the answer remains unclear, choose an offer whose obligations are explicit rather than assuming an undocumented exception.

Make the booking decision
Choose the offer with the lowest credible total cost for your trip, not the lowest daily rate. A slightly higher quote can be better when it includes the mileage you need, permits your return route, supplies the correct cable, gives a clear battery policy and has a manageable deposit. Conversely, a cheap quote can become expensive if you must pay a shortfall service fee, absorb a one-way restriction, incur network or idle charges, or buy protection you initially thought was included.
Before submitting payment, read the agreement tied to the exact reservation and confirm the pickup battery rule, return requirement, charging responsibility, return station, deposit, cancellation terms and equipment. Keep that agreement with your pickup and return photos until all post-rental charging and deposit transactions have cleared.
