Compare the specific checking or savings accounts, not the institution’s label. Before applying, verify federal insurance, calculate fees under your actual balance and habits, test branch and ATM access, compare the yield after requirements, and confirm eligibility and deposit-hold rules. A bank is not automatically more convenient or safer than a credit union, and a credit union is not automatically cheaper. The right choice is the account whose documented terms fit how you keep, move, and access money.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends comparing products, services, locations, rates, fees, and other factors. Its worksheet advises researching three or more options rather than choosing from a single advertisement.

Start with the account, not the institution type
“Bank” and “credit union” describe different kinds of institutions, but those labels do not tell you whether a particular account is affordable or practical. Compare a checking account with other checking accounts and a savings account with other savings accounts. Keep your assumptions consistent: use the balance you normally maintain, the number of withdrawals you make, your expected direct deposits, and the locations where you need cash.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAccount terms change. Current APYs, fees, service networks, membership rules, and availability should be confirmed in the institution’s latest account agreement, fee schedule, rate sheet, and disclosures before you apply. The CFPB says institutions must disclose fees and how to avoid them up front, and that terms or fees can change after opening with written notice.

Questions to define before comparing
- Will this be a checking account, savings account, interest-bearing checking account, or money market deposit account?
- What balance will you keep on an ordinary day and at the end of each statement cycle?
- How often will you use cash, checks, debit purchases, bill pay, transfers, and mobile deposit?
- Do you receive a regular direct deposit, and are you willing to make it a condition for fee waivers?
- Do you need branches near home, work, school, or frequent travel destinations?
- Could a deposited check need to be available quickly?
- Would you rather have a payment declined than risk an overdraft fee?
Verify that deposits are federally insured
Safety begins with confirming the institution and the account’s insurance status. The CFPB states that deposits at an insured bank are protected up to $250,000 per individual account holder, subject to account-ownership rules. NCUA-insured credit unions provide similar federal share insurance within applicable coverage limits. This figure is cited by the CFPB on a page last reviewed September 12, 2024.
Do not infer coverage from a familiar name, a mobile application, or the word “member.” Look for the official FDIC or NCUA insurance designation in the institution’s disclosures and verify that the exact product is a deposit or share account covered by that insurance. Account ownership and the way balances are titled affect how coverage is calculated, so ask the institution how your planned ownership structure is treated.
Deposit account versus investment
A money market deposit account at a bank or credit union is a deposit product and can receive applicable federal insurance. A money market mutual fund is an investment product, not a deposit account, and should not be treated as equivalent protection. Confirm the product name and legal category before comparing its rate or safety.

| Cost area | What to verify | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly maintenance | Dollar amount, billing cycle, and every waiver condition | A “free” account may still require qualifying activity or a balance to avoid charges. |
| Minimum opening deposit | Amount required to open and whether it must remain in the account | A large opening requirement can make an otherwise attractive account impractical. |
| Minimum balance | Daily, average, or statement-cycle calculation and the fee if you fall below it | Use the method that matches your normal cash flow, not an occasional high balance. |
| Direct-deposit waiver | What counts as direct deposit, the required amount or frequency, and when the waiver starts | A waiver is not useful if your income arrives another way or the account does not recognize it. |
| Overdraft and NSF | Fees, transaction authorization policy, transfer options, and whether overdraft coverage is optional | One failed payment or repeated small charges can outweigh interest earnings. |
| ATM and cash access | Out-of-network fees, operator surcharges, reimbursement limits, and cash-deposit costs | Frequent cash users should calculate an annual total, not just the monthly fee. |
| Other services | Checks, cashier’s checks, wire transfers, paper statements, stop payments, expedited cards, and account closure | A low monthly price can be offset by services you actually use. |
What “free” or “no cost” means
Under CFPB guidance, an account marketed as “free” or “no cost” cannot impose a monthly service fee, specified transaction-overage fee, deposit, withdrawal, or transfer fee, or a fee for failing to meet a minimum balance. Other charges, including some ATM or overdraft fees, may still apply. Read the full schedule instead of relying on the headline.
Calculate a break-even cost
For each account, estimate one year of fees under two scenarios: your normal behavior and a bad-but-plausible month. Include a missed waiver, an out-of-network ATM visit, and an overdraft or returned payment only if those events are realistic for you. Subtract any fee reimbursements. This exposes accounts that look cheap only when every condition is met.
Compare interest and yield after requirements
Compare APY or the stated interest rate only after you identify the balance and activity needed to earn it. An account paying interest may require a minimum balance, direct deposit, a certain number of debit transactions, or other monthly activity. Fees can exceed the interest earned, especially in an interest-bearing checking account.

| Yield question | What to record |
|---|---|
| Rate type | APY or interest rate, whether it is variable, and the date of the quoted rate |
| Qualifying balance | Balance range that receives the advertised rate and the rate applied above or below it |
| Activity rule | Direct deposit, debit-card transactions, electronic statements, or other monthly requirements |
| Interest timing | How interest is calculated and when it is credited |
| Fees that reduce return | Monthly, excess-transaction, transfer, or other charges likely for your use |
| Rate changes | Whether the institution can change the rate and how notice is provided |
For a simple estimate, multiply the balance you expect to keep by the stated annual rate, then subtract the fees you would actually pay. This is not a promise of earnings; rates and balances can change. A lower rate with no conditions may produce more value than a higher rate you cannot consistently qualify for.

Money market deposit accounts
A money market deposit account may offer a higher rate than ordinary savings, but it commonly has a minimum deposit or balance and limits on certain transactions. Ask which withdrawals, transfers, checks, or debit transactions count toward any limit and what happens when you exceed it. Compare the account’s access rules with your intended use before treating the higher rate as an advantage.
Evaluate access where you actually live and travel
Convenience is a measurable cost. Map branches and ATMs near your home, workplace, school, and regular travel routes. Check operating hours, cash-deposit capability, accessibility, drive-up services, and whether the institution participates in a shared network that you can use without an extra charge.
Digital and human support
- Test whether the mobile app supports remote check deposit, alerts, card controls, account freezes, transfers, and secure messaging.
- Confirm online bill pay, external-account transfers, recurring payments, and the time required for each to post.
- Ask when telephone support is available, whether a live representative can resolve account issues, and how urgent card problems are handled outside business hours.
- Review the institution’s process for replacing a card, disputing a transaction, and reporting suspected fraud.
The CFPB’s checking-account checklist says to compare account services online or by visiting bank and credit union branches near you. Use that approach with the places and services you personally need, rather than counting locations in a distant national network that you will never use.
Check payment features and restrictions
Two accounts with similar fees can work very differently. Confirm whether each includes a debit card, paper checks, online bill pay, person-to-person payments, ACH transfers, incoming and outgoing wires, cash deposits, and recurring transfer scheduling. Ask about daily debit and ATM limits, transfer cutoffs, and holds on newly deposited funds.

Overdraft and low-risk alternatives
Some accounts are designed not to permit overdrafts. Instead, a transaction is declined when available funds are insufficient. This can reduce overdraft fees, but the account may omit check writing or online bill pay, impose a monthly fee, or restrict other features. Compare the complete feature set and decide whether a declined payment would be less harmful than overdraft exposure in your situation.
Also ask whether the institution offers linked savings transfers, alerts, grace periods, or optional overdraft coverage. Do not opt in based solely on convenience; understand the fee and the transactions it covers. Review how pending debit-card authorizations affect available balance, because a pending transaction can cause a later payment to be declined even when the ledger balance appears sufficient.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Confirm check-deposit availability and holds
If you deposit checks, ask exactly when funds become available for withdrawal. Each institution sets its availability rules within federal maximum waiting periods. The schedule can differ for cash, electronic deposits, local or nonlocal checks, new accounts, large deposits, and deposits made through an ATM or mobile app.

Check credit union membership and opening requirements
Credit unions generally require membership through a qualifying field, such as an employer, location, association, or family relationship. Eligibility rules differ, and you may need to establish a share account before using other products. Ask what proof is accepted, whether a one-time membership deposit is required, and whether you remain eligible after changing jobs or moving.
For either institution type, confirm the minimum opening amount, acceptable identification, tax-identification requirements, funding methods, account-opening hours, and whether an initial deposit is subject to a hold. If you are opening jointly, ask what each owner must provide and how ownership affects insurance coverage.
Use a three-account comparison worksheet
The CFPB’s educational worksheet recommends researching three or more options and comparing them to find the best fit. Keep the account type and usage assumptions identical so that the comparison is meaningful.
| Comparison axis | Questions for every account |
|---|---|
| Insurance | Is the institution FDIC- or NCUA-insured? Is this exact product covered, and how would my ownership and balance be treated? |
| Ongoing cost | What are the monthly fee, minimums, waiver triggers, overdraft or NSF charges, ATM costs, and other likely service fees? |
| Yield | What APY or rate applies to my expected balance, and what activity or balance conditions must I meet? |
| Access | Where are branches and fee-free ATMs? Are hours, mobile deposit, cash access, and support suitable? |
| Payment features | Are debit cards, checks, bill pay, transfers, direct deposit, and recurring payments available with the limits I need? |
| Risk controls | Can transactions be declined instead of overdrafted? What alerts, transfers, or coverage options exist? |
| Eligibility and timing | Do I qualify? What is the opening deposit, identification requirement, and deposit-hold policy? |
Save the fee schedule, rate sheet, account agreement, and funds-availability disclosure for each finalist. Record the date you checked them. If a representative gives you a verbal explanation, ask where the same term appears in the written documents.
Bank versus credit union: useful tendencies, not promises
CFPB educational material describes credit unions as potentially having generally lower fees, while also noting that they may offer fewer branches, fewer account options, and membership restrictions. These are broad tendencies, not guarantees. A particular bank may have lower fees than a particular credit union, and a credit union may provide better access through shared networks or local branches.
Make the decision from the account disclosures. Compare the annual cost, realistic yield, access, features, and restrictions for the exact products you can open. If two accounts are otherwise close, choose the one that makes your most important routine—cash access, direct deposit, bill payment, or emergency savings—simpler and less costly.
Quick Recap
A step-by-step process before applying
- Define the use case. Write down account type, expected balance, monthly transactions, cash needs, direct-deposit status, and whether you need checks or bill pay.
- Find at least three eligible accounts. Include both banks and credit unions only when you can actually qualify for membership or account opening.
- Verify insurance and product category. Confirm FDIC or NCUA status and distinguish deposit accounts from investment products.
- Collect current documents. Obtain the fee schedule, rate sheet, account agreement, funds-availability disclosure, and eligibility rules.
- Model normal and difficult months. Apply your real balance and activity, then test a missed waiver, an out-of-network ATM use, or another plausible exception.
- Check access. Locate branches and ATMs, test digital features, and confirm support hours and cash-deposit options.
- Ask unresolved questions in writing. Request clarification on overdrafts, pending transactions, holds, rate changes, and membership requirements.
- Apply only after the terms fit. Save the disclosures and confirmation, set up alerts, and verify that direct deposit and recurring payments post as expected.
Common comparison mistakes
- Choosing by institution type alone: the account’s terms determine your cost and access.
- Comparing headline APYs: an advertised rate may require a balance or activity you cannot maintain.
- Calling an account free without reading exclusions: ATM, overdraft, and other fees may remain.
- Ignoring waiver failure: model the month in which direct deposit stops or the balance falls below the threshold.
- Assuming every branch or ATM is usable: check fees, hours, cash-deposit capability, and network participation.
- Skipping eligibility checks: a credit union membership rule can prevent you from opening the account you selected.
- Overlooking holds: the account may show a deposit while the funds remain unavailable for bills.
- Confusing a money market deposit account with a money market mutual fund: they have different legal status and protections.
Final decision checklist
- Federal insurance and account coverage are verified.
- The annual cost is acceptable under normal and plausible problem scenarios.
- The yield still helps after fees and qualification requirements.
- Branches, ATMs, mobile tools, support, and cash access fit your routine.
- Required payment features and transaction limits are documented.
- Overdraft behavior and low-risk alternatives are understood.
- Check-hold rules match your cash-flow needs.
- Credit union membership or other eligibility requirements are satisfied.
- You have saved the current disclosures and know how the institution will notify you of changes.
