Compare cement producers in three layers: earnings quality, operating margins, and balance-sheet resilience. Build a consistent three-to-five-year dataset, reconcile each issuer’s EBITDA definition, connect margins to tonnes and costs, then test whether operating cash flow can fund maintenance and expansion capital expenditure without excessive borrowing. A company with the highest reported EBITDA margin is not automatically the best investment if its figures use different adjustments, its cash conversion is weak, or its debt becomes unmanageable when construction demand or cement prices fall.
What a useful cement-company comparison must establish
A proper comparison should answer four separate questions rather than produce one headline ranking:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Earnings growth: Are revenue, cement volumes, EBITDA, EBIT, net income and operating cash flow improving over several years, and is the improvement coming from recurring operations?
- Margin quality: How much profit does each tonne generate after fuel, power, freight, clinker and other operating costs?
- Financial resilience: Can the producer withstand a weak construction cycle, higher interest rates, currency depreciation or an expensive expansion program?
- Capital efficiency: Does reported profit become free cash flow and acceptable returns on the capital invested?
Keep valuation until these operating and balance-sheet questions are answered. A low price-to-earnings or enterprise-value-to-EBITDA multiple can reflect structural problems, not a bargain.

Step 1: Normalize the reporting basis before calculating anything
Many apparent differences disappear when the accounting basis is made consistent. Create a profile for every company before entering numbers in a spreadsheet.

Record the fiscal period and currency
- Write the exact fiscal year or quarter and each company’s year-end date.
- Keep the original reporting currency in the source columns. If you convert currencies, record the exchange-rate method and date in separate columns.
- Do not compare a calendar-year result with a year ending in a different season without noting the weather, construction and energy-price periods covered.
Check consolidation and corporate changes
Confirm whether the numbers are consolidated, joint-venture contributions are accounted for differently, and acquisitions, disposals or plant closures changed the perimeter. A revenue jump after an acquisition is not organic growth. A disposal can make margins appear better simply by removing a weak operation.
Separate reported and management-defined measures
Label every metric as IFRS, US GAAP, statutory, or management-defined. A cement-company SEC filing warns that “EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA, as calculated by us, may not be comparable to similarly titled measures reported by other companies, including those in the cement industry.” Adjusted figures may exclude restructuring, impairment, acquisition, foreign-exchange or other items that another issuer leaves in operating expenses.
Keep both the issuer’s reported number and your reconciled number. If an adjustment cannot be reproduced from the filing, mark the measure as not directly comparable instead of forcing a ranking.

Choose millions or billions for money and million tonnes for cement. Distinguish cement tonnes from clinker tonnes and from total dispatches that may include aggregates or ready-mix products. Record whether a volume figure is domestic, consolidated or a company-wide total.
Step 2: Build a three-to-five-year earnings record
One year can be distorted by a plant outage, an unusually high selling price, a fuel shock, an impairment or a gain on disposal. A trend table exposes whether the business is improving through the cycle.

- Volume: more tonnes sold because of demand, capacity additions or market-share gains.
- Price or realization: a higher average selling price per tonne.
- Product mix: a greater share of premium cement, blended cement, ready-mix or other higher-value products.
- Currency: translation or transaction effects that do not represent local operating growth.
- Acquisitions and disposals: newly consolidated or deconsolidated operations.
Do not call revenue growth organic until these components have been separated. A company that sells fewer tonnes but raises prices may have stronger near-term revenue and weaker long-term utilization; the opposite can also occur when it fills new capacity with discounted volume.
Test earnings quality
Compare EBITDA and EBIT with operating cash flow. Persistent profit without cash can indicate working-capital absorption, unpaid receivables, inventory accumulation or non-cash gains. Read the notes for impairment reversals, asset-sale gains, government grants and large restructuring charges. One-off items can be shown separately, but they should not drive a multi-year growth conclusion.
Step 3: Compare margins with the operating drivers behind them
Calculate three basic margins using the same numerator and revenue perimeter:
EBITDA margin = EBITDA ÷ revenue × 100EBIT margin = EBIT ÷ revenue × 100Net margin = net income ÷ revenue × 100
EBITDA shows operating performance before depreciation, interest and tax; EBIT recognizes the heavy asset base through depreciation; net margin includes financing, tax and non-operating effects. Use all three to identify where an advantage originates.
Published figures: useful context, not a league table
| Company and period | Revenue | Cement sales | Reported EBITDA margin | Debt and cash disclosure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cementir Holding N.V., 2025 | €1,639.640 million | Not stated in the cited figure | 26.8%; EBITDA €439.500 million | Net financial debt of −€465.072 million, described as net cash |
| ACC Limited, FY2025-26 report | ₹25,962 crore revenue from operations | 43.9 million tonnes | 13% | Zero debt; ₹918 crore cash and cash equivalents |
| Ambuja Cements Limited, FY2025-26 report | ₹40,656 crore revenue from operations | 73.7 million tonnes | 18% | Zero debt; ₹1,770 crore cash and cash equivalents |
| Dangote Cement Plc, 2026 investor materials | Not stated in the cited figure | Not stated in the cited figure | Investor centre lists revenue, EBITDA and EBITDA margin as headline measures | Investor centre lists net cash; individual values depend on the dated result document |
These figures cover different currencies, geographies, fiscal periods, consolidation scopes and potentially different EBITDA adjustments. Cementir’s 26.8% is therefore not proof that it is operationally superior to a company reporting 18% or 13%. Reconcile definitions and compare the cost structure before drawing that conclusion.
Connect margin changes to tonnes and costs
For each company, calculate revenue per tonne where both revenue and comparable cement volume are available. Then investigate:

- Fuel and power: kiln fuel, electricity and the share of alternative fuels. Energy often moves faster than selling prices.
- Freight: inbound raw materials, outbound distribution and the distance between plants, terminals and customers.
- Clinker factor: blended cement can reduce clinker and emissions intensity, but availability of supplementary materials matters.
- Capacity utilization: fixed kiln and grinding costs spread over more tonnes when utilization rises.
- Product and geographic mix: premium products or markets can lift realization even if total volume is flat.
A margin expansion accompanied by higher tonnes, stable or falling energy cost per tonne and better utilization is generally more durable than one created solely by a temporary price increase.
Understand EBITDA’s limits
EBITDA is not cash flow and does not measure liquidity. The same SEC filing states that “EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA should not be construed as alternatives to profit or operating profit, as indicators of operating performance, as alternatives to cash flow provided by operating activities, or as measures of liquidity.” Depreciation is a real economic cost for a kiln and grinding fleet; replacing those assets requires capital expenditure. Always move from EBITDA to operating cash flow, maintenance capex and free cash flow.
Step 4: Evaluate debt and downturn resilience
Use debt measures that reveal both the amount borrowed and the ability to service it:
Net debt = interest-bearing debt − cash and cash equivalentsNet debt / EBITDA = net debt ÷ annual EBITDAInterest coverage = EBIT or EBITDA ÷ net interest expenseFree-cash-flow coverage = free cash flow ÷ scheduled debt service
Use the issuer’s convention consistently. Negative net debt means net cash under that convention, but confirm whether restricted cash, leases or other obligations are included. Net debt/EBITDA is most informative when EBITDA is normalized for one-offs and tested at a lower point in the cycle. Interest coverage should use the same period and clarify whether capitalized interest or exceptional finance items are excluded.
Inspect maturities, rates and currencies
- List every material maturity by year, not just total debt.
- Separate fixed-rate and floating-rate borrowing to estimate exposure to higher rates.
- Identify the currency of debt versus the currency of revenue and operating cash flow.
- Check covenants, pledged assets, guarantees and refinancing facilities.
- Match expansion borrowing with the date new capacity is expected to generate cash.
There is no universal debt number that is “too much” for every cement company. A moderate ratio can become dangerous when EBITDA falls, rates reset or a large maturity arrives before a new plant ramps up. Stress the model with lower volume, weaker prices, higher fuel cost and currency depreciation instead of relying on a single threshold.
What the published balance sheets show
Cementir reported −€465.072 million of net financial debt in 2025, which its presentation describes as net cash. ACC’s FY2025-26 report shows zero debt and ₹918 crore of cash and cash equivalents. Ambuja’s FY2025-26 report shows zero debt and ₹1,770 crore of cash and cash equivalents. “Zero debt” does not mean zero obligations: review leases, supplier financing, guarantees, restoration provisions and committed capital expenditure separately.

Step 5: Follow EBITDA into cash flow and capital expenditure
Build a bridge for every year:
- Start with EBITDA.
- Subtract cash taxes, cash interest and changes in working capital to reach operating cash flow.
- Separate maintenance capex, which keeps existing capacity operating, from growth capex for new kilns, grinding lines, terminals or acquisitions.
- Subtract total capex to calculate free cash flow.
- Show dividends, buybacks, acquisitions and debt repayment to explain the movement in net debt.
Working-capital days are especially useful. Rising receivable days may signal weaker customers or looser credit; rising inventory days can reflect fuel or clinker stockpiling, but can also tie up cash. Compare cash conversion over several years rather than praising one unusually strong period.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Expansion can temporarily depress free cash flow while improving future capacity. The key questions are whether the project is funded without overleveraging the balance sheet, whether construction is on budget, and whether utilization and pricing can support the additional depreciation and interest.
Step 6: Compare returns and capital intensity
Calculate return on invested capital or return on capital employed using a consistent definition of operating profit, tax and invested capital. Compare return on equity as well, but inspect the denominator: a highly leveraged company or one with thin equity can report a high ROE while taking more risk.
Pair return measures with:
- Maintenance capex as a percentage of revenue and EBITDA.
- Growth capex per tonne of new capacity, when disclosed.
- Working-capital days and cash conversion.
- Depreciation per tonne, which indicates the burden of an older or newer asset base.
- Utilization of clinker and grinding capacity.
A producer with a slightly lower margin can create more shareholder value if it converts profit into cash with less sustaining capex and earns superior returns on invested capital.
Step 7: Add geography, currency and industry risks
Cement is local and transport-sensitive. Map where plants, customers, debt and cash flows sit. A company concentrated in one market may have less currency complexity but greater exposure to that country’s construction cycle and regulation. A multinational may diversify demand while adding translation, repatriation and political risks.

A practical comparison worksheet
Use this sequence in a spreadsheet or annual-report review:
- Enter fiscal year-end, currency, consolidation scope and major acquisitions or disposals.
- Copy three to five years of revenue, cement volume, EBITDA, EBIT, net income, operating cash flow and capex.
- Label each EBITDA measure as reported, adjusted or your own reconciliation.
- Calculate EBITDA, EBIT and net margins from the same revenue base.
- Calculate revenue per tonne and record disclosed price, mix, utilization, fuel, power, freight and clinker-factor changes.
- Reconcile EBITDA to operating cash flow, then to free cash flow.
- List gross debt, cash, net debt, maturities, rates and currencies.
- Calculate normalized net debt/EBITDA and interest coverage; repeat using a downturn EBITDA case.
- Separate maintenance from growth capex and evaluate ROCE/ROIC and ROE.
- Write the conclusion by trade-off: identify the leader in earnings growth, margin, balance-sheet safety and cash generation, then name the specific risk that could change each ranking.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Ranking headline EBITDA margins
Problem: Adjustments and reporting perimeters differ.
Correction: Reconcile definitions, compare EBIT and net margins, and attach operating drivers to every margin change.
Treating revenue growth as organic
Problem: Acquisitions, currency and price inflation can mask falling tonnes.
Correction: Decompose growth into volume, price, mix, currency and portfolio changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCalling EBITDA cash flow
Problem: Kilns require maintenance spending and working capital consumes cash.
Correction: Follow EBITDA through operating cash flow, maintenance capex and free cash flow.
Using gross debt without cash
Problem: A cash-rich producer appears more levered than it is.
Correction: Use net debt, verify the cash definition and review restricted cash and leases.
Assuming zero debt eliminates risk
Problem: Leases, guarantees, supplier finance and committed expansion can still create obligations.
Correction: Read the liabilities and commitments notes and model future capex.
Using one-year figures
Problem: A single year may reflect a price spike, outage or disposal.
Correction: Use a three-to-five-year trend and test a weaker cycle.
How to write the final investment conclusion
Do not force a single winner when the evidence points to different strengths. State four findings separately:
- Which company has the strongest underlying earnings and volume trend.
- Which reports the best reconciled margins and why its cost position supports them.
- Which has the safest balance sheet after maturities, rates and currency are considered.
- Which converts operating profit into free cash flow and returns most efficiently.
Then identify the event that would change the conclusion: an energy-price shock, a construction slowdown, aggressive new capacity, currency weakness, regulatory cost or an expansion that exceeds its budget. This trade-off-based conclusion is more reliable than declaring the highest EBITDA margin the best cement stock.
