To compare bank earnings fairly, put banks on the same time period, geography, currency and peer basis; show absolute scale before ratios; then test margins, revenue mix, operating costs, credit losses, capital and funding. A bank with the highest net income is not necessarily the most profitable, and a higher return on equity (ROE) is not automatically better. The useful question is whether earnings are recurring, adequately capitalized and produced with acceptable credit and funding risk.
This framework answers “Which bank is actually more profitable?”, “Is a higher ROE always better?” and “How do I compare banks with different business mixes?” using the measures reported in bank financial statements, regulatory filings and the FDIC Quarterly Banking Profile.

1. Set a comparison frame before looking at the numbers
Comparing two banks only works when their figures describe comparable periods and businesses. Write down the frame before opening an earnings release.

- Period: Use the same fiscal quarter or year. A calendar-year bank and a bank whose fiscal year ends in another month can otherwise reflect different rate, credit and seasonal conditions.
- Geography and currency: Keep the country, reporting currency and accounting regime consistent. Convert currencies only with a stated method and date, and keep the original reported figures alongside the converted ones.
- Peer group: Prefer banks with similar asset size, customer base and business model. A community lender, a global investment bank and a card-focused issuer can all be profitable while earning money in fundamentally different ways.
- Corporate events: Record mergers, divestitures, major branch or loan-book sales and unusual accounting changes. Growth after an acquisition is not the same as organic growth, and a gain on a sale should not be treated as recurring revenue.
- Reported versus adjusted figures: Preserve GAAP or statutory results and management’s adjusted results separately. An adjusted ROE at one bank cannot be compared with another bank’s unadjusted ROE until the exclusions are reconciled.
Quarterly ratios are often annualized. Label them as annualized and do not compare an annual figure with a single-quarter, unannualized result.

2. Start with scale, then move to ratios
Absolute amounts tell you how large each bank’s earnings engine is; ratios tell you how efficiently it uses that base. Record these items for the same period:
| Scale measure | What it tells you | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Net income | The dollars available to common shareholders after expenses, provisions and taxes. | Did income rise because the bank earned more, released provisions, sold an asset or benefited from a tax item? |
| Revenue | The size of the operating revenue pool before expenses. | Is growth coming from net interest income, fees, trading or a one-time gain? |
| Total assets | The balance-sheet base supporting earnings. | Did assets grow organically, through acquisition or through temporary securities and cash holdings? |
| Loans | The principal interest-earning credit exposure. | Which portfolios grew, and did underwriting standards or concentrations change? |
| Deposits | A major funding source and an indicator of customer franchise strength. | Are deposits stable and low-cost, or are they being replaced by more expensive wholesale funding? |
Only after recording these amounts should you compare growth rates and normalized ratios. A 10% increase from a small base is not economically equivalent to 10% growth at a much larger bank. Acquisition-related assets and deposits should be identified rather than folded into an organic-growth conclusion.
3. Compare the interest business: NIM, yields and funding costs
For most traditional banks, the interest business is the starting point for recurring earnings. The Federal Reserve defines net interest margin (NIM) as net interest income ÷ average earning assets. It measures the spread earned on assets that generate interest after the cost of funding those assets.
Recommended Free Tools
Read NIM with its drivers
A higher NIM can reflect better loan pricing, cheaper deposits, a larger share of high-yield assets or a temporary benefit from interest-rate movements. Compare NIM with:
- Loan yield: The rate earned on loans, including the effect of fixed- and floating-rate portfolios.
- Deposit cost: The interest paid to customers. Rising deposit costs can compress NIM even when loan yields are also rising.
- Earning-asset mix: Consumer, commercial, credit-card, mortgage, securities and cash balances have different yields and risks.
- Funding mix: Core deposits, brokered deposits, secured borrowing and other wholesale sources have different costs and stability.
The Federal Reserve cautions that wholesale funding “can be more costly and less stable than core deposits.” A bank reporting a wide NIM because it relies on expensive or short-term funding may have less durable earnings than a bank with a slightly narrower margin supported by stable deposits.

Separate rate effects from balance effects
When available, use management’s rate-volume analysis to determine whether net interest income changed because balances grew, rates changed or the asset and funding mix shifted. A bank can increase net interest income while NIM falls if average earning assets grow faster than the spread. Conversely, NIM can rise while total interest income stagnates if the earning-asset base shrinks.
4. Measure profitability with both ROAA and ROE
The Federal Reserve defines return on average assets (ROAA) as net income divided by average assets, and ROE as net income divided by average equity capital. Use both measures because they answer different questions:
- ROAA: How productively the bank turns its asset base into profit. It is less affected by how much debt or equity finances those assets.
- ROE: How much profit the bank earns on the equity supporting the balance sheet. It reflects leverage, capital levels and the profitability of the business.
ROE can rise when a bank holds less equity against the same assets, when a temporary gain lifts net income or when buybacks reduce the equity denominator. That is why a higher ROE is not always better. Check whether the bank also has strong ROAA, sound capital, stable revenue and manageable credit losses.
Use current system figures as context, not targets
The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System reported aggregate 2025 year-end ROAA of about 1.1% and ROE of 11.2%. Those are system reference points, not required performance thresholds and not forecasts for an individual bank. The FDIC reported fourth-quarter 2025 aggregate net income of $77.7 billion and ROA of 1.24%; that quarterly statistic should not be treated as an annual result without considering annualization and seasonal effects. For the first quarter of 2026, the Federal Reserve reported aggregate ROE of 14% for large banks. Differences in coverage, period and bank group mean these figures should not be substituted for each institution’s filing.
Decompose the difference
If one bank’s ROE exceeds another’s, trace the gap through ROAA, leverage and unusual items. A bank can have lower asset productivity but higher ROE because it operates with a thinner equity base. Another can have a lower ROE because it retains more capital, which may protect depositors and leave greater capacity for future growth.

5. Separate recurring revenue from volatile or one-time income
Do not treat total revenue as a single, uniform stream. Split it into net interest income and noninterest income, then identify the major components of noninterest income:
- Deposit, payment and service fees
- Trading revenue
- Investment-banking and underwriting fees
- Wealth- and asset-management fees
- Mortgage, card and other specialized income
- Gains or losses on securities and asset sales
A diversified fee base can reduce dependence on lending spreads, but trading and investment-banking revenue may be more cyclical. A securities-sale gain can improve a quarter without improving the bank’s ongoing earning power. Compare the mix over several periods where possible, and distinguish recurring fees from mark-to-market results and disposals.
Compare costs only on a like-for-like basis
Review operating expenses and the efficiency ratio, but first confirm each bank’s definitions. Check the numerator, denominator, taxable-equivalent treatment, and adjusted exclusions. One bank may exclude restructuring costs or amortization while another reports all expenses; the resulting ratios are not directly comparable. Also consider whether a low expense ratio reflects underinvestment in technology, compliance or staffing that could raise future costs.
6. Test credit quality before accepting current earnings
Credit costs can lag the economic deterioration that eventually reduces profit. Examine the entire credit-loss chain:
| Credit measure | What to examine | Why it changes the earnings reading |
|---|---|---|
| Nonperforming and delinquent loans | Balances and rates by portfolio, including loans 30 or more days past due and loans in nonaccrual status. | Rising problem loans can precede higher charge-offs and provisions. |
| Net charge-offs | Realized losses after recoveries, preferably by loan category. | They show losses that have already passed through the credit book. |
| Provision expense | The current-period addition or release to expected credit-loss reserves. | A low or negative provision can flatter earnings if credit costs are merely delayed. |
| Allowance coverage | Reserve balances relative to nonperforming loans and, where disclosed, expected losses. | Thin coverage can leave future earnings exposed if losses rise. |
| Concentrations | Commercial real estate, consumer, leveraged lending, office, geographic and other concentrated exposures. | Two banks with the same delinquency rate can face very different downside risk. |
The Federal Reserve reported total loan delinquency of 1.6% at the end of 2025, below a long-run historical average of about 3%. Its definition includes loans 30 or more days past due or in nonaccrual status. This is a system statistic; compare each bank’s portfolio, definitions and trend rather than assuming the system rate describes it.

7. Compare capital, liquidity and funding resilience
Profitability is only attractive when the bank can absorb losses and meet withdrawals. Compare:
- CET1 ratio: Common equity tier 1 capital relative to risk-weighted assets.
- Tier 1 leverage ratio: A capital measure using a less risk-weighted balance-sheet denominator.
- Tangible common equity: Common equity after deductions such as goodwill and other intangible assets, where disclosed.
- Liquidity: Cash, high-quality liquid assets, contingent borrowing capacity and the maturity of funding.
- Uninsured deposits: Deposits above insurance limits that may be more sensitive to confidence and pricing.
- Wholesale funding: Brokered deposits, secured borrowings and other market sources, including their maturity and cost.
At year-end 2025, the Federal Reserve reported that more than 99% of banks were well capitalized and that aggregate CET1 ratios were about 13% for both large and small banks. These are system-wide figures, not substitutes for the bank-specific ratios, liquidity disclosures and stress results in a filing. For the first quarter of 2026, the Federal Reserve reported aggregate CET1 of 12% for large banks; the different period and population illustrate why dates must remain attached to every comparison.
8. Add market valuation only after judging earnings quality
Price-to-earnings (P/E) and price-to-tangible-book ratios can help answer what investors are paying for a bank’s earnings and net assets. Use them last. A low P/E may signal undervalued recurring profits, but it may also reflect expected credit losses, weak capital or a shrinking business. A premium to tangible book can reflect durable returns and franchise value, while a discount can reflect doubts about asset quality, funding or governance.
The Federal Reserve describes market leverage ratios and credit-default-swap (CDS) spreads as forward-looking indicators. Higher market leverage generally signals greater market confidence, while wider CDS spreads signal lower confidence. These indicators express market expectations; they do not replace an examination of the financial statements.
9. A side-by-side comparison framework
Use the following axes to organize a spreadsheet or reading of two or more filings. The business reason column tells you what a difference may mean; it does not assume that one direction is always superior.

| Comparison axis | Measures to collect | Business reason for a difference |
|---|---|---|
| Loan, deposit and revenue growth | Period-end and average balances; organic growth versus acquisition growth. | Growth can expand future earnings, but rapid growth may increase funding needs or credit risk. |
| NIM and funding cost | NIM, loan yield, deposit cost, earning-asset mix and wholesale funding share. | Shows whether spreads are supported by pricing power and stable funding or by temporary rate and mix effects. |
| ROAA and ROE | Net income, average assets, average equity and leverage. | Separates asset productivity from the effect of capitalization and leverage. |
| Fee and trading mix | Service, payment, wealth, investment-banking, trading and other noninterest income. | Indicates diversification and the degree of cyclicality or market sensitivity. |
| Efficiency | Operating expenses and the bank’s defined efficiency ratio, with adjusted items identified. | Shows cost discipline only when definitions and taxable-equivalent treatment align. |
| Credit quality | Delinquencies, nonperformers, net charge-offs, provisions, allowance coverage and concentrations. | Reveals whether current earnings may be overstated by delayed or under-reserved credit costs. |
| Capital, leverage and liquidity | CET1, tier 1 leverage, tangible common equity, liquid assets, uninsured deposits and wholesale funding. | Measures loss-absorbing capacity and vulnerability to deposit runs or market funding stress. |
| Valuation | P/E, price-to-tangible-book, market leverage and CDS spreads. | Captures the market’s forward-looking view after operating and balance-sheet risks are understood. |
10. Step-by-step workflow using filings and regulatory data
- Choose the peers and period. List the banks’ fiscal quarter or year-end dates, geography, currency, asset size and business model. Note mergers, divestitures and accounting changes.
- Build the scale sheet. Enter net income, revenue, assets, loans and deposits in reported currency. Mark acquisition-related changes and one-time gains.
- Calculate or verify ratios. Confirm the definitions and averaging periods for NIM, ROAA, ROE and efficiency. Label quarterly ratios as annualized when applicable.
- Reconcile interest income. Read loan yields, deposit costs, earning-asset mix and funding sources alongside NIM. Identify rate, volume and mix effects.
- Map recurring revenue. Separate net interest income, fees, trading, investment banking, wealth management and gains or losses. Review the trend rather than one unusually strong quarter.
- Stress the credit line. Compare delinquencies, nonaccruals, charge-offs, provisions, allowance coverage and concentrations. Ask whether a low provision reflects genuinely better credit or delayed recognition.
- Check the loss-absorbing base. Record CET1, tier 1 leverage, tangible common equity, liquidity, uninsured deposits and wholesale funding, including material maturity differences.
- Reconcile reported and adjusted results. List every adjustment and decide whether it is recurring. Do not combine an adjusted numerator with an unadjusted denominator.
- Add valuation. Compare P/E and price-to-tangible-book only after deciding which earnings and capital figures are sustainable. Use market leverage and CDS spreads as context for investor confidence.
- Write the conclusion in risk-adjusted terms. State which bank has stronger recurring profitability, which has better balance-sheet resilience and what evidence could change that judgment.
11. How to answer the common reader questions
Which bank is actually more profitable?
Use a combination of sustainable ROAA, ROE, revenue quality, expense control and credit performance. Net income identifies the larger dollar producer; ROAA identifies asset productivity; ROE shows the return on equity. Prefer the bank whose advantage remains after removing one-time gains, aligning adjustments and considering provisions, capital and funding risk.
Is a higher ROE always better?
No. A higher ROE may result from lower capitalization, temporary income or a shrinking equity denominator. Check ROAA, CET1, leverage, tangible equity and the stability of revenue before treating it as superior.
How do you compare banks with different business mixes?
Compare each bank first with a peer group that has a similar model, then explain the mix explicitly. A fee-heavy wealth manager, a spread-focused lender and a trading-oriented institution should be assessed on the revenue, capital and risk measures that drive their businesses. Use common measures such as ROAA, ROE, capital and credit quality, but do not interpret a difference in NIM or fee share without the underlying asset and customer mix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat if one bank has a lower margin but higher overall returns?
That can be rational. The bank may earn more fee income, use assets more efficiently, have lower operating costs or carry less credit risk. NIM is an important component of earnings, not a complete profitability score.
Can system averages tell me whether my bank is good?
They provide context for scale and cycle conditions, but they are not forecasts or minimum standards. Bank-specific filings and regulatory data determine whether an individual institution is outperforming or underperforming its appropriate peers.
12. Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Ranking by net income alone: Add assets, deposits, ROAA and ROE so scale does not masquerade as efficiency.
- Using mismatched periods: Align fiscal dates and label annualized quarterly ratios.
- Ignoring acquisitions: Separate purchased growth from organic loan and deposit growth.
- Comparing adjusted with unadjusted figures: Reconcile every exclusion before calculating a spread.
- Treating NIM as a complete score: Read it with loan yield, deposit cost, asset mix and funding stability.
- Assuming low provisions are automatically good: Check delinquency trends, charge-offs and allowance coverage for delayed credit costs.
- Rewarding the highest ROE without checking capital: Examine CET1, leverage and tangible equity because a thin capital base can magnify ROE.
- Using valuation first: A cheap multiple can reflect expected losses or weak funding; judge earnings quality before price.
- Mixing definitions: Confirm whether ratios use average or period-end balances, taxable-equivalent income and management adjustments.
13. Build a decision that remains useful after the quarter ends
A durable comparison has three layers. First, establish the size and growth of the franchise. Second, determine how efficiently and repeatedly it converts assets and capital into earnings. Third, test whether those earnings can withstand credit losses, funding pressure and regulatory capital requirements. Keep a dated record of the assumptions, definitions and one-time items so the next quarter’s comparison updates the same framework rather than starting over.
The best-performing bank is therefore not simply the one with the largest profit, widest NIM or highest ROE. It is the bank whose recurring earnings, asset productivity, capital strength, liquidity and credit outcomes are strongest relative to comparable institutions after accounting for business mix and unusual events.
