The largest advertised bonus is not automatically the best deal. Compare each offer’s qualification recipe, direct-deposit definition, eligibility limits, unavoidable fees, cash you must keep tied up, and the time between completing the requirements and receiving the payment. The method below uses U.S. consumer-account offers published by banks and accessed October 13, 2026; terms, deadlines and geographic availability can change, so verify the live disclosure before applying.
Start with the complete value, not the headline bonus
A checking or savings promotion has three separate clocks and several possible costs. First is the enrollment and qualification window: the period in which you must open the right account and complete deposits or transactions. Second is the bank’s processing period after you qualify. Third is any required holding period after payment. A nominal $400 reward can be worth less than a smaller reward if it requires an impractical balance, triggers monthly charges, or takes many months to arrive.

Use this comparison formula for every offer:
Estimated net value = advertised bonus − account fees paid while waiting − other measurable costs of meeting the requirements.

Build a one-page offer worksheet
Copy the terms shown during enrollment, including the date, channel and any promo code. Record the following fields before opening an account:
| Comparison field | What to record | Why it changes the value |
|---|---|---|
| Reward | Dollar amount, tier or “up to” language | An upper tier may require substantially more money or activity than the entry tier. |
| Qualification event | Direct deposits, electronic deposits, debit transactions, balance, or a combination | Some incoming payments and transactions are explicitly excluded. |
| Amount and count | Minimum dollars, number of deposits or transactions, and whether each must post | Pending items or one large payment may not satisfy a count requirement. |
| Deadline | Days from enrollment or account opening; exact calendar date | The clock can start before your first deposit arrives. |
| Eligibility | New-customer rule, recent-closure lookback, previous-bonus restriction, state limits | An otherwise perfect offer can be unavailable to you. |
| Fees and waivers | Monthly charge, balance or deposit waiver, age or relationship exceptions | A waiver dependent on money you cannot leave in the account is not a dependable saving. |
| Payment timing | Days after qualification or maximum days after opening | The payout clock is different from the qualification window. |
| Account status | Open, unrestricted, positive balance or good-standing requirements | Closing or restricting the account can forfeit or delay the payment. |
| After-payment clause | Required retention period and any clawback or deduction | Early closure can reverse the reward. |
Step 1: Translate the deposit requirement into a testable checklist
Write the requirement as five questions: What source must send the money? How much must arrive? How many deposits are needed? When must they post? Which transaction types are excluded? Ask the payroll or benefits payer whether it can send the payment through the method the bank recognizes. Do not assume that an ACH credit from your own account is equivalent to payroll.
Chase example: a $400 direct-deposit offer
The dated offer page advertises $400 after at least $1,000 in qualifying direct deposits within 90 days of offer enrollment. The bank’s FAQ identifies qualifying sources such as a paycheck, pension or government benefits. It excludes peer-to-peer payments, checks, external transfers and other listed categories. Read the FAQ attached to your enrollment, because the offer page is date-specific: Chase checking offer and Chase offer FAQ.
If your employer pays by payroll direct deposit, confirm that the deposits will total at least $1,000 and post within the 90-day window. A transfer from another bank, a check deposit or a payment sent through a person-to-person service should not be counted toward this requirement.
Wells Fargo example: a $325 electronic-deposit offer
The Everyday Checking promotion advertises $325 after at least $1,000 in qualifying electronic deposits within 90 calendar days of account opening. Its definition is broader in some respects: qualifying credits can include ACH, RTP, FedNow or certain card-network credits. The same disclosure excludes transfers between accounts, mobile deposits, Zelle, and deposits made at a branch or ATM. Read the current terms at Wells Fargo’s checking offer.

The practical lesson is to classify the payment by the bank’s wording, not by the fact that it arrives electronically. A transfer you initiate from your existing bank may be ACH but still be excluded as an account transfer. Save screenshots or a PDF of the definition and check your account history for the posted date.
Transaction-based alternatives
Not every promotion uses payroll. The Wells Fargo Clear Access offer uses a transaction structure: ten qualifying posted transactions within 60 days. The live disclosure supplies the applicable fee and payout details. This type can suit someone without payroll direct deposit, but count only transactions that have posted and verify whether card purchases, bill payments or other categories are eligible. A pending transaction at the deadline is not a completed transaction unless the terms say otherwise.

Step 2: Check whether you are actually eligible
Read the eligibility paragraph before submitting an application. Common restrictions include current ownership of the bank’s checking account, closure of a similar account within a stated lookback period, and having received a prior personal checking bonus. A joint account, an existing savings relationship or a business account may be treated differently, so do not infer eligibility from an advertisement alone.
Restrictions in the published examples
- The Chase FAQ excludes existing checking customers and certain recently closed accounts and limits how often a customer can receive the bonus.
- TD excludes existing or recently closed account holders and people who previously received a personal checking bonus. Its offer page is at TD’s checking and savings bonus terms.
- The Citizens October–November 2026 campaign requires new checking and savings accounts opened on the same day. The promotion page is Citizens’ 2026 promotion disclosure.
Eligibility can also be geographic. Confirm that your state, account edition and application channel match the disclosure. If the offer requires a promo code or enrollment link, save evidence that you used it; opening a similar account through another page may not enroll you automatically.
Step 3: Price the monthly fee and the waiver realistically
Subtract the fee for every month the account is likely to remain open before and after payment. Then test the waiver using your actual cash flow. A waiver based on a minimum daily balance is different from one based on a qualifying deposit: the first can tie up cash every day, while the second may be achievable through normal payroll.

| Account or offer | Published monthly-fee information | Waiver or cost issue to model |
|---|---|---|
| Chase Total Checking | $15 monthly service fee | Waived under listed qualifying-deposit or balance/relationship conditions. Use the exact condition in your enrollment disclosure rather than assuming any ACH credit qualifies. |
| Wells Fargo Everyday Checking | $15 monthly service fee | Waiver options include a $1,500 minimum daily balance, qualifying account balances, $500 in qualifying electronic deposits, or an age condition. The $1,500 test is a daily requirement, not merely a month-end balance. |
| TD checking offer | Fee-waiver terms apply; the cited bonus page does not establish one universal fee amount in the offer summary. | Check the account’s current fee schedule and whether your deposits or balance meet its waiver every statement cycle. |
| Citizens 2026 campaign | The promotion includes account-fee details and monthly activity conditions; the cited campaign summary does not state one comparable fee amount. | Price the checking and savings accounts together and confirm that maintaining the required balances does not create a separate charge. |
Example: when a fee erodes a bonus
Suppose a $325 promotion takes two months to qualify and one month to process. If you cannot meet the fee waiver, three $15 charges total $45, leaving $280 before taxes or other costs. If a $400 offer takes the same period but the account stays fee-free through ordinary payroll, its net value may exceed the nominal difference by more than the headline amounts suggest. Do this arithmetic with your own likely holding period; do not count a waiver that depends on an emergency fund you cannot safely leave untouched.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 4: Separate qualification time from payout time
Mark two dates in your calendar: the date the requirements should be complete and the latest date the bonus should arrive. Also note whether the bank requires the account to remain open, unrestricted, positive or in good standing. A bank can regard you as qualified while still withholding payment until its review is complete.
| Offer | Qualification timing | Published payout timing and account-status condition |
|---|---|---|
| Chase $400 | $1,000 in qualifying direct deposits within 90 days of offer enrollment | Within 15 days after requirements are complete; the enrolled account cannot be closed or restricted when the bonus is paid. |
| Wells Fargo $325 | $1,000 in qualifying electronic deposits within 90 calendar days of account opening | Within 30 days after requirements are met; the account must remain open through the deposit attempt. |
| TD, up to $500 | Follow the offer’s direct-deposit and account-opening requirements | On or before 180 days from account opening. The bank says a bonus may be deducted if the account closes within six months after payment. |
| Citizens, up to $3,000 across checking and savings | October–November 2026 campaign: open both accounts on the same day; move $15,000 of new money into savings within 10 business days and meet the stated monthly qualifying activity and end-of-day balance rules. | The campaign uses monthly payments tied to continued qualification. Use the live disclosure for each payment date and the required account status. |
Do not close an account immediately after the qualifying deposit posts. First check the payment clause, the six-month consequence in the TD terms, and any requirement to keep the account unrestricted. If a payment is late, contact the bank with the enrollment record, deposit posting dates and the exact offer version.
Step 5: Account for liquidity and combined-product requirements
Some bonuses cost you flexibility rather than an explicit fee. A minimum balance may need to be maintained each day or at the end of each month. “New money” generally means funds not already held at that institution, but the promotion’s definition controls. Money moved from one account at the same bank may not count.
Citizens’ paired-account structure
The October–November 2026 Citizens promotion illustrates why a large headline reward needs a detailed model. It requires checking and savings to be opened on the same day. The savings portion requires $15,000 in new money within 10 business days, followed by a qualifying end-of-day balance for monthly payments, while the checking side has its own monthly activity requirements. Someone who cannot leave $15,000 available should compare only the portion they can realistically earn, not the advertised maximum of up to $3,000.

Balance duration versus one-time funding
Distinguish a one-time deposit deadline from a balance-duration rule. A deposit can satisfy a qualification test and then be withdrawn, but a balance requirement may be checked every day or at month-end. Ask whether the bank uses average daily balance, minimum daily balance, or end-of-day balance; these are not interchangeable. Schedule transfers with enough time for weekends and holidays so the required balance is actually posted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Offer snapshots: compare like with like
The following figures are issuer-published snapshots accessed October 13, 2026, not market averages or forecasts. They are useful for demonstrating the worksheet, but each offer can change or be limited by state and customer status.
| Bank offer | Advertised reward | Main qualification shown in the snapshot | Key timing or restriction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chase checking | $400 | $1,000 qualifying direct deposits | Within 90 days of enrollment; pay within 15 days after completion; account cannot be closed or restricted at payment. |
| Wells Fargo Everyday Checking | $325 | $1,000 qualifying electronic deposits | Within 90 calendar days of opening; pay within 30 days; account stays open through deposit attempt. |
| TD checking | Up to $500 | Use the current offer’s direct-deposit and eligibility rules | Pay by 180 days from opening; prior-bonus and recent-closure exclusions; possible deduction after closure within six months of payment. |
| Citizens checking and savings | Up to $3,000 across both accounts | Open both the same day; $15,000 new money to savings within 10 business days plus monthly activity and balance tests | October–November 2026 campaign; monthly payments depend on continued qualification. |
Do not rank these offers by dollars alone. Chase may fit a person with dependable payroll and no fee exposure; Wells Fargo’s electronic-credit definition may fit a different payer; TD’s long outer payout deadline makes cash-flow planning important; Citizens is designed for someone who can satisfy a paired-account and substantial-balance requirement. Those are suitability observations, not guarantees of approval or payment.
Track the offer after opening
- Save the evidence. Keep the offer page, disclosures, promo code, enrollment date and account-opening confirmation in one folder.
- Confirm the funding source. Ask the payer how the credit will be labeled and compare that with the bank’s qualifying definition.
- Log every posting. Record amount, source, posting date and whether the item is pending, returned or reversed.
- Monitor the fee waiver. Check the daily balance or qualifying-deposit total before the statement closes; do not wait for the fee to appear.
- Set payout reminders. Use the bank’s stated 15-day, 30-day or 180-day clock, as applicable, and leave the account open and unrestricted.
- Reconcile the payment. When the bonus arrives, verify the amount and retain the statement showing it. If it is missing after the stated window, contact the bank promptly.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Counting every ACH credit as a direct deposit
Fix: Match the sender and transaction type to the bank’s exclusions. Payroll, pension and government benefits may qualify where a self-funded transfer does not.

Assuming the account-opening date starts every clock
Fix: Write down whether the deadline starts at enrollment, opening or another event. Chase’s cited requirement uses 90 days from offer enrollment, while Wells Fargo uses 90 calendar days from account opening.
Ignoring weekends, holidays and posting delays
Fix: Fund several business days early and verify the posted date, not merely the initiation date.
Budgeting a fee waiver you cannot maintain
Fix: Run a worst-month test. If a $1,500 daily balance would force you to borrow or drain an emergency fund, model the account with the fee instead.
Closing as soon as the qualifying deposit lands
Fix: Read the post-payment clause. TD’s cited terms allow a deduction if the account closes within six months after payment, and other offers require the account to remain open at payout.
Comparing a maximum tier with an easy entry tier
Fix: Compare the reward you can actually earn after meeting every deposit, balance and activity test. Label an “up to” amount as a ceiling, not an expected payment.
A decision framework for choosing between qualifying offers
After filling the worksheet, eliminate any offer that fails a hard constraint: you are ineligible, cannot supply the required deposit source, cannot fund the balance, or cannot keep the account open for the required period. For the remaining offers, calculate:
- Net cash value: reward minus expected monthly fees and measurable transfer costs.
- Liquidity burden: the largest balance and the longest period your money is unavailable.
- Execution risk: how many separate deposits or transactions must post and how easily an excluded transaction could be mistaken for a qualifying one.
- Time to cash: qualification window plus the bank’s payout period, using the latest stated date when the disclosure gives a range.
- Exit risk: any requirement to keep the account open, avoid restrictions or repay the reward after closure.
Choose the offer with the best combination for your circumstances, not the largest advertisement. A smaller bonus that you can complete without fees and receive quickly can produce more usable cash than a larger promotion with a high balance hurdle and a six-month exit restriction.

What to verify immediately before applying
- Is the promotion still available on the date you apply, and is your state or channel eligible?
- Does the enrollment page require a code, cookie, link or same-day account pairing?
- What exactly qualifies as a deposit or transaction, and which sources are excluded?
- When does the qualification clock begin, and are calendar or business days used?
- What monthly fee applies, and can you meet its waiver every month?
- Must the account remain open, unrestricted or at a positive balance when the bonus is paid?
- Is there a repayment or deduction clause after closure?
- How will the bonus be reported for tax purposes?
These checks turn an appealing headline into a realistic estimate of net value, effort and waiting time. Re-read the live disclosure on the day you enroll because the examples above are dated U.S. offer terms, not permanent promises.
