Compare Bajaj Finance and HDFC Bank as different balance-sheet businesses, not as interchangeable stocks. Bajaj Finance is a diversified, non-bank lender built for faster growth and high return on equity, but it is more exposed to consumer-credit cycles and wholesale funding conditions. HDFC Bank is a deposit-funded commercial bank, so its economics depend on net interest margin, deposit quality, capital and credit costs. The better investment is the one whose sustainable growth, losses and valuation fit your required return—not the company with the higher one-year profit or headline P/E.
1. Start with the business models
A useful comparison begins with how each company obtains money, lends it and absorbs losses. A bank and a non-banking finance company (NBFC) can report similar ratios, but the risks behind those ratios differ.

Bajaj Finance: diversified NBFC lending
Bajaj Finance lends without a conventional bank deposit franchise. Its funding comes from a mix of borrowings and securitisation or market funding. That structure can support rapid expansion across consumer, small-business, commercial and other products, but the cost and availability of funding can change quickly when credit markets tighten. Consumer lending also tends to be more sensitive to employment, household cash flow and underwriting quality.
For FY2026, Bajaj Finance reported assets under management (AUM) of ₹509,975 crore, net total income of ₹53,324 crore and profit after tax (PAT) of ₹20,689 crore, excluding specified one-time items. Gross non-performing assets (GNPA) were 1.01%, net NPA (NNPA) 0.41% and return on equity (ROE) 19.2%.
#1 Best Overall
The company identifies customer centricity, technology leadership and a lowest-risk orientation as strategic priorities. Its FY2026 annual report describes technology, product breadth, customer franchise and risk management as areas where it intends to lead. Those priorities matter because an NBFC’s long-term results depend on scaling underwriting and servicing systems without allowing fraud, delinquencies or operating costs to rise faster than income.
HDFC Bank: deposit-funded commercial banking
HDFC Bank funds lending primarily through customer deposits. That deposit franchise can provide a more stable and potentially cheaper funding base than market borrowing, although deposit pricing, liquidity and competition still affect profitability. The bank’s earnings are driven by the spread between lending yields and deposit or other funding costs, fee income, operating efficiency and provisions for bad loans.
In Q4 FY2026, HDFC Bank reported average deposits of ₹28,511 billion and average advances under management of ₹29,644 billion. Net interest margin (NIM) was 3.38%, PAT ₹192 billion, GNPA 1.15%, return on assets (ROA) 1.96% and capital adequacy 19.7%.
For the audited FY2026 year, annual net profit was ₹74,671.29 million, compared with ₹67,347.36 million in FY2025. The bank reported FY2026 GNPA of 1.15%, NNPA of 0.38% and annual average ROA of 1.94%.
What the different models mean for an investor
| Question | Bajaj Finance | HDFC Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Primary funding lens | Diversified borrowings, securitisation and market funding; monitor cost and availability. | Deposits and other bank funding; monitor deposit growth, mix and pricing. |
| Growth engine | Product expansion, customer acquisition, repeat usage and technology-led distribution. | Deposit gathering, loan growth, cross-selling, fees and balance-sheet scale. |
| Main cyclical sensitivity | Consumer-credit losses and stress in wholesale funding markets. | Deposit competition, interest-rate changes, sector credit stress and execution or integration risks. |
| Core return measures | ROE, spread or net interest margin, operating expense to income and credit cost. | NIM, CASA and fee income, ROA, ROE, operating efficiency and credit cost. |
2. Put the FY2026 numbers in context
The figures below are a starting snapshot, not a like-for-like scorecard. Bajaj Finance reports AUM and ROE in its NBFC framework, while HDFC Bank reports deposits, advances, NIM, ROA and capital under banking conventions. Definitions, averaging periods and consolidation boundaries can differ.
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
| Metric | Bajaj Finance FY2026 | HDFC Bank FY2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Scale measure | AUM ₹509,975 crore | Q4 average deposits ₹28,511 billion; Q4 average advances under management ₹29,644 billion |
| Income or profit | Net total income ₹53,324 crore; PAT ₹20,689 crore excluding specified one-time items | Q4 PAT ₹192 billion; audited full-year net profit ₹74,671.29 million versus ₹67,347.36 million in FY2025 |
| Asset quality | GNPA 1.01%; NNPA 0.41% | Q4 and FY2026 GNPA 1.15%; FY2026 NNPA 0.38% |
| Returns | ROE 19.2% | Q4 ROA 1.96%; FY2026 annual average ROA 1.94% |
| Capital | Not stated in the cited FY2026 snapshot; obtain the latest capital ratios from its filing. | Q4 capital adequacy 19.7% |
Do not rank the companies by these numbers alone. Bajaj Finance’s 19.2% ROE and HDFC Bank’s 1.94% annual average ROA measure different businesses with different leverage and funding structures. A bank’s ROA is normally lower than an NBFC’s ROE because the denominator and balance-sheet leverage are not the same.
3. Examine funding, liquidity and interest-rate sensitivity
For Bajaj Finance
- Break borrowings into bank loans, bonds, commercial paper, deposits if applicable and securitisation. Note maturity dates, floating versus fixed rates and lender concentration.
- Compare the weighted cost of funds with lending yields and spreads. A widening spread caused only by temporarily high-yield products may not be durable.
- Check liquidity buffers, unencumbered assets and the asset-liability maturity profile. Ask how many months of scheduled obligations can be met if market funding becomes expensive.
- Review securitisation and assignment volumes. Rapid growth that depends on continuously selling receivables can be vulnerable when risk appetite disappears.
For HDFC Bank
- Track deposit growth against advances growth and examine the proportion of low-cost current and savings account (CASA) deposits.
- Follow deposit repricing. A bank can maintain loan growth while margins fall if it has to pay materially more for deposits.
- Read liquidity coverage, government-security holdings and other contingent sources of liquidity in the latest disclosure.
- Separate one-quarter NIM movement from the structural trend. The Q4 FY2026 NIM of 3.38% is a point-in-time figure, whereas investment decisions require a multi-quarter series.
The key comparison is resilience: HDFC Bank’s deposits can reduce dependence on wholesale markets, while Bajaj Finance’s diversified funding can still be effective if maturities, liquidity and pricing remain controlled. Neither advantage is permanent.

Loan growth is valuable only when it produces risk-adjusted profit and acceptable future losses. Build a five-year series for AUM or advances, net interest income, PAT, operating expenses, provisions and capital. Then investigate what changed in the latest year.
Questions for Bajaj Finance
- Which products supplied the incremental AUM: consumer durable, personal, rural, small-business, commercial or another category?
- How much of new volume came from existing customers versus first-time borrowers?
- Did customer acquisition and repeat usage rise without a similar increase in early delinquencies?
- Is growth broad-based geographically, or concentrated in a region, channel or product with a higher downturn risk?
- Did provisions and write-offs grow more slowly than income because credit quality improved, or because loss recognition may be delayed?
Bajaj Housing Finance is a related but separately reported housing-finance business. The Bajaj Finance investor presentation states that its FY2026 AUM was ₹140,706 crore, up 23% year over year, while net interest income rose 25% to ₹3,752 crore. Treat those figures as the housing-finance operation’s metrics and verify how any ownership or consolidation is reflected in the parent company’s accounts; do not add them mechanically to Bajaj Finance’s reported AUM.
Questions for HDFC Bank
- Compare advances growth with deposits. Expansion funded by unusually aggressive deposit pricing may dilute future margins.
- Review retail, corporate, small-business and agricultural mix, as each has a different loss cycle and capital requirement.
- Check fee income quality: recurring payments and distribution fees are generally more durable than one-off gains.
- Look for changes in restructuring, slippages, recoveries and write-offs that could make reported NPA movement look better or worse than underlying trends.
5. Compare margins and operating efficiency correctly
Use each company’s own definitions and keep the periods consistent. For HDFC Bank, the central indicators are NIM, CASA, fee income and the operating cost-to-income ratio. For Bajaj Finance, examine net interest margin or spread, operating expense to income and credit cost.
Rank #3
A rising margin is not automatically positive. It may reflect higher-risk products, a temporary funding mismatch or delayed repricing. Likewise, a lower margin can be acceptable if customer lifetime value, fee income and loss rates improve. Plot margin, operating expenses and credit cost together rather than selecting the strongest line item.
Scale benefits should appear as slower operating-expense growth than income growth, stable service quality and lower acquisition cost per active customer. If technology investment lifts expenses today, decide whether management has disclosed measurable capacity, automation or fraud-control benefits that can support future returns.
6. Analyze asset quality beyond GNPA and NNPA
Bajaj Finance’s FY2026 GNPA of 1.01% and NNPA of 0.41% and HDFC Bank’s FY2026 GNPA of 1.15% and NNPA of 0.38% appear close, but they are not interchangeable scores. Product mix, write-off policy, collateral, recovery timing and denominator definitions affect every ratio.
Build a complete credit-loss view
- Record GNPA and NNPA by quarter, not just year-end.
- Add slippage or new NPA formation, provision coverage, credit cost and net write-offs.
- Check early-bucket delinquencies, restructured loans and loans that have received payment relief.
- Compare recoveries with gross write-offs; a low NPA ratio supported by heavy write-offs deserves scrutiny.
- Stress-test an adverse scenario in which unemployment, consumption or a sector downturn raises defaults for two to three years.
Consumer exposure can make Bajaj Finance’s losses more cyclical, particularly when household cash flows weaken. HDFC Bank’s broader product and customer base can diversify risk, but it remains exposed to sector stress and to execution risks when systems, portfolios or processes are integrated.
7. Compare capital and returns together
Returns are meaningful only after considering the capital that supports them. Bajaj Finance’s 19.2% FY2026 ROE is attractive if underwriting remains disciplined and the company can fund growth without excessive leverage or dilution. HDFC Bank’s 19.7% Q4 capital adequacy provides a substantial disclosed buffer, while its 1.94% FY2026 average ROA shows how efficiently the bank converted assets into profit.
Rank #4
Read capital ratios alongside growth plans, risk-weighted assets, dividend policy and provisions. A company can temporarily raise ROE by operating with less surplus capital, taking more risk or shrinking the denominator. Prefer returns that remain healthy after a stress test and after retaining enough capital for the next growth cycle.
8. Value each business using expectations, not a headline multiple
Refresh the share price, market capitalisation, price-to-book (P/B), price-to-earnings (P/E), expected earnings growth and consensus estimates immediately before investing. No current market price or valuation multiple is established in the FY2026 operating disclosures, so any decision based on an old quote would be unreliable.
How to interpret P/B
P/B is especially useful for financial companies because book value represents the equity buffer that absorbs credit losses. Compare P/B with sustainable ROE, expected growth, capital needs and cost of equity. A high-ROE company can justify a premium only if that ROE is repeatable and the balance sheet is not becoming riskier.
How to interpret P/E
P/E is sensitive to the point in the credit cycle. If provisions are temporarily low, earnings can be overstated and the P/E can look deceptively cheap. Normalize earnings across a full cycle, adjust for specified one-time items and test how the multiple changes under higher credit costs or lower margins.

Write down the annual return you require, the holding period and the loss you could tolerate. Then model conservative, base and optimistic cases for loan growth, margin, operating costs, credit cost and terminal valuation. Buy neither company merely because it is cheaper than its own history; ask whether the expected return compensates for the specific funding and credit risks.

9. Review governance, technology and execution
Read the latest annual report, audit report, related-party disclosures, regulatory correspondence and management commentary. Look for audit qualifications, unexplained changes in accounting, repeated control weaknesses, regulatory actions and material technology or fraud incidents.
For Bajaj Finance, management’s stated priorities—customer centricity, technology leadership and a lowest-risk orientation—should be tested against measurable outcomes such as delinquency control, fraud losses, complaint resolution and operating cost. The FY2026 annual report states: “At Bajaj Finance, we see this not as a disruption to navigate but as our moment to lead in the expanse of our product suite, customer franchise, technology deployment and risk management.” Treat that as management’s strategic objective, then verify execution in subsequent filings.
For HDFC Bank, examine deposit retention, service stability, technology investments and the handling of integration or migration projects. A strong capital ratio does not eliminate operational or conduct risk.

- Collect matching periods. Download the latest annual report and the most recent quarterly presentation for both companies. Use the same end date where possible.
- Normalize profit. Remove specified one-time items, note accounting changes and reconcile PAT to operating income, provisions and taxes.
- Map the balance sheet. For Bajaj Finance, list funding sources and maturities. For HDFC Bank, chart deposits, CASA and advances.
- Build the growth table. Record five years of AUM or advances, net interest income, fee income, operating expenses and PAT.
- Build the credit table. Add GNPA, NNPA, slippages, provision coverage, credit cost, write-offs, restructurings and early delinquencies.
- Check capital capacity. Compare capital adequacy, risk-weighted-asset growth, retained earnings and the capital required to meet management’s growth plan.
- Run stress cases. Model slower growth, a margin decline, higher funding costs and a two-year increase in credit losses. Record the effect on PAT, ROE or ROA and capital.
- Refresh valuation. Use the current price and share count to calculate market capitalisation, P/B and P/E. Compare those with normalized earnings and your return hurdle.
- Make a position decision. Choose Bajaj Finance only if its incremental growth premium compensates for consumer-credit and NBFC funding risk. Choose HDFC Bank only if its deposit franchise, capital and diversified earnings justify the price and expected return. If neither clears your hurdle, hold cash or wait.
11. Which investor profile fits each company?
Bajaj Finance may fit when
- You seek faster compounding and can tolerate greater consumer-credit cyclicality.
- You are comfortable analyzing wholesale funding, securitisation and liquidity.
- You believe technology and product breadth can keep acquisition and servicing efficient without weakening underwriting.
- The valuation already compensates you for execution and funding-market sensitivity.
HDFC Bank may fit when
- You prefer a large deposit-funded bank with diversified products.
- You value strong disclosed capital, including the 19.7% Q4 FY2026 capital-adequacy ratio.
- You are willing to accept potentially steadier, but not risk-free, growth in exchange for deposit-franchise resilience.
- The price reflects realistic NIM, deposit-cost and credit-cost assumptions rather than peak profitability.
These are analytical profiles, not buy or sell recommendations. Your time horizon, tax situation, portfolio concentration and ability to tolerate drawdowns still determine suitability.
12. Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing ROE with ROA as if they were the same metric. They use different denominators and leverage structures.
- Treating GNPA as a complete credit score. Add slippages, provisions, write-offs and early delinquency.
- Using one quarter’s NIM or PAT. Build a multi-quarter and full-cycle series.
- Ignoring funding stress. Model higher borrowing costs for Bajaj Finance and higher deposit costs for HDFC Bank.
- Adding subsidiary figures to the parent without checking consolidation. Bajaj Housing Finance’s ₹140,706 crore FY2026 AUM is a separately reported operation.
- Buying a “quality” name at any price. Expected return is the combination of business performance, valuation change and dividends.
- Failing to update data. HDFC Bank’s investor-relations pages list FY2026–27 quarterly results and presentations; replace FY2026 figures with the latest available quarter before publication or investment.
Bottom line
Bajaj Finance offers a higher-growth, high-ROE NBFC profile, with FY2026 ROE of 19.2% and low reported GNPA and NNPA, but its consumer-credit exposure and diversified market funding require a close liquidity and stress analysis. HDFC Bank offers a deposit-funded banking model with Q4 FY2026 capital adequacy of 19.7%, 3.38% NIM, 1.15% GNPA and FY2026 average ROA of 1.94%, but margins depend on deposit pricing and credit costs.
Compare sustainable, risk-adjusted growth and the price you pay. Refresh both companies’ latest filings, share prices, market capitalisation, P/B, P/E, consensus growth and any RBI or SEBI actions immediately before investing. If the valuation does not leave room for higher losses, slower growth or lower margins, the correct choice is neither.
