Short answer: An IHG credit card is usually the better fit when you regularly stay at IHG hotels and can use IHG status, fourth-night-free rewards and (with the Premier card) an anniversary night. A general travel card is usually better when your trips span several hotel and airline programs or you prefer booking through a travel portal. Compare the annual fee, card-only earnings on your actual spending, redemption flexibility and benefits you can realistically use—not the largest headline points number.
What you are really comparing
An IHG card concentrates rewards in IHG One Rewards. You earn points directly in that program and receive hotel-specific benefits. A general travel-rewards card earns a transferable currency (or portal currency) that can be used across multiple airlines and hotel programs. The right choice depends less on the advertised welcome bonus than on where you stay, how you book and whether you will use the card’s recurring benefits.

Start with your hotel pattern
Frequent IHG stays favor the IHG cards
If you repeatedly choose IHG brands for work or leisure, the Premier card’s automatic Platinum Elite status, 10 points per dollar on IHG purchases, fourth-night-free feature and anniversary certificate can all matter. Traveler supplies a no-annual-fee way to receive Silver Elite status, earn 5 points per dollar at IHG hotels and use the same fourth-night-free feature.
Those benefits have value only when you stay at eligible IHG properties and can find dates that work. A certificate or points balance is not a guaranteed room: IHG says reward-night pricing is variable, and hotel and date availability affects what you can book.
Infrequent or unpredictable IHG stays favor flexibility
If you stay at IHG only occasionally, the direct-earning advantage may not offset a fee or the risk of unused certificates. A flexible card lets you direct points to several airline and hotel programs or book through a portal. That diversification can be more useful when your destinations, preferred hotel brands or airline choices change from trip to trip.

IHG’s large hotel multipliers combine several sources of points. For Premier, IHG advertises “up to 26X” on qualifying hotel stays. That total can include up to 10 points per dollar from the card, as many as 10 points from IHG membership earning and up to 6 points from Platinum Elite status. The card itself does not earn 26 points per dollar.
Traveler’s “up to 17X” similarly combines the card’s 5 points per dollar with base IHG member earning and Silver Elite status points. When comparing cards, put only the card-funded portion in your credit-card calculation, then model loyalty-program points separately so you do not count the same dollar twice.

Analyze everyday earning by category
Use the categories that match your spending, not the categories in a promotional headline. The following rates are the card portions listed by the issuers:

For an illustration, suppose a year includes $2,000 of IHG stays, $3,000 of dining, $1,500 of gas and $10,000 of other purchases. Before any welcome offer or loyalty-program points, Premier would earn 20,000 + 15,000 + 7,500 + 30,000 = 72,500 card points. Traveler would earn 10,000 + 9,000 + 4,500 + 20,000 = 43,500 points. Those are arithmetic examples, not a forecast of your spending or a valuation of the points.
Value the IHG-specific benefits realistically
Fourth-night-free reward stays
IHG Customer Care states: “Premier, Traveler and Business Premier U.S. Chase Credit Cardmembers can redeem the 4th night free for any stay of 4 or more consecutive nights regardless of the 4th night’s point amount.” In practical terms, a qualifying four-night reward booking prices the fourth night at zero points, even when that night would otherwise cost more or fewer points than the first three.
The benefit applies to reward-night stays, not automatically to cash bookings, and requires at least four consecutive nights. Confirm that the reservation is made under the eligible cardmember account and that the booking flow shows the expected discount before you transfer plans or cancel another reservation.
Premier anniversary night
Premier currently includes an anniversary free-night certificate capped at a 40,000-point redemption level. IHG says Premier cardmembers can add points for a more expensive eligible night. A certificate is useful only if a property you want is available at the permitted price on your dates; variable award pricing can put popular dates above the cap.

Automatic status
Premier provides Platinum Elite status; Traveler provides Silver Elite status. Status can affect the experience of an IHG stay, but its practical value depends on how often you stay, which benefits are offered at the property and whether you would otherwise earn status. Do not assign a cash value to status unless you can identify benefits you would actually use.

No foreign transaction fees
IHG lists no foreign transaction fees for both U.S. consumer cards. That removes a common cost when paying abroad, but it does not make a card’s points more valuable or guarantee that every overseas merchant will accept it.
Compare a flexible card’s redemption options
Chase Sapphire Preferred points can be used through Chase Travel and transferred to listed airline and hotel partners, including IHG One Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt and Wyndham Rewards. This creates flexibility that direct IHG earning does not: you can wait to choose a program until you know the destination and award availability.
Flexibility is not the same as a guaranteed premium value. Transfer ratios, partner award charts, portal prices and award availability determine what a point can accomplish. The Chase page lists a $100 annual hotel statement credit for hotel stays purchased through Chase Travel, subject to its terms. Because the credit requires a portal booking, compare the portal’s total cash price, cancellation rules and room conditions with the hotel’s direct price before treating the credit as worth its full face amount.
IHG points, by contrast, are already in the program you intend to use. That avoids a transfer step and makes an IHG redemption straightforward, but your options are concentrated in IHG hotels and the program’s variable award pricing.

Account for fees, credits and break-even points
Premier versus Traveler
Premier costs $99 per year; Traveler has no annual fee. To justify Premier’s fee, identify benefits you expect to use during the cardmember year: the anniversary night, Platinum status, the higher IHG earning rate and the up-to-$120 application-fee credit every four years. Count only the portion you can reasonably realize. For example, a certificate that expires unused is worth zero to your household, regardless of its maximum permitted redemption.
Traveler’s no annual fee makes it easier to keep during years with few IHG stays. Its lower earning rates and Silver status may still be sufficient for someone who wants fourth-night-free access without committing to a paid card.
Premier versus Chase Sapphire Preferred
The annual-fee difference is $4 ($99 versus $95), so the decision is primarily about benefits and earning patterns rather than the fee alone. Premier earns more on IHG purchases and supplies IHG status and the anniversary night. Chase earns broadly across travel and dining, offers transfer options and lists the $100 Chase Travel hotel credit. Assign a conservative value to each benefit after considering restrictions, then subtract the annual fee from the benefits you will actually capture.
Welcome offers are temporary
IHG currently lists 140,000 points for Premier after $3,000 in purchases in the first three months and 80,000 points for Traveler after $2,000 in the first three months. These are time-sensitive offers, not permanent features. Confirm the live offer, eligibility language, spending deadline and whether taxes, fees or returns affect qualifying purchases. Never manufacture spending or carry a balance to earn a bonus; interest can overwhelm any rewards value.
A step-by-step comparison worksheet
- List your next 12 months of travel. Record expected IHG nights, other hotel nights, airline trips, destinations and whether you normally book direct or through a portal.
- Separate cash bookings from reward bookings. Estimate how many IHG stays could be four or more consecutive nights and how often an anniversary certificate would fit your dates.
- Map your spending. Add annual dollars for IHG hotels, other travel, dining, gas, household bills, streaming and general purchases. Apply only the card rates that actually match each transaction.
- Calculate card-generated points. Keep IHG membership and elite-status points in a separate line so the headline 26X or 17X figures do not inflate the card comparison.
- Test redemption availability. Search the properties and dates you would genuinely use. Check the points price, certificate cap, fourth-night-free display and cancellation terms.
- Value credits conservatively. A portal-only credit is worth less than its face amount if the portal price is higher or less flexible. A status benefit is worth only what you would otherwise pay for or use.
- Subtract fees and check risk. Include annual fees, possible unused certificates and any booking restrictions. Make sure you can meet a welcome-offer requirement with normal spending.
- Choose based on repeatable value. Prefer the card whose recurring benefits work in an ordinary year, not only during a one-time bonus period.
How the choice changes by traveler type
The regular IHG business traveler
Someone staying at IHG properties several times each quarter may favor Premier. The 10-point card earn rate on IHG stays, Platinum status, fourth-night-free feature and anniversary certificate all align with that pattern. Verify that the properties used for work have reward availability and that the certificate’s 40,000-point cap is practical in the cities and dates involved.

The occasional IHG leisure traveler
Traveler can be a lower-commitment choice. There is no annual fee, yet the card supplies Silver status, 5 points per dollar on IHG stays and fourth-night-free eligibility. It is less compelling if you rarely stay four nights or if your preferred destinations routinely price above the anniversary-night cap that Premier uses.
The multi-brand traveler
Someone alternating among hotel chains and airlines may prefer a flexible card such as Chase Sapphire Preferred. Transfer partners and portal booking can preserve options when no single program has the best route or room. The trade-off is that you must compare transfer terms and portal prices each time rather than relying on a single hotel program.
The traveler who wants no annual fee
Traveler is the only no-annual-fee card in this comparison. A no-fee card can remain open between trips without requiring a yearly benefit calculation, but its lower earning rates may matter if you spend heavily at IHG hotels or on dining and gas.

You do not have to choose one ecosystem permanently. A person who values IHG status and the fourth-night-free feature could hold an IHG card for hotel spending while using a flexible card for airlines, non-IHG hotels or categories where it earns more. That approach also creates two annual fees to evaluate and may divide spending or complicate redemption.
Consider a two-card setup only after calculating the combined fees, confirming eligibility for each application and identifying a specific use for each card. Do not assume that holding both cards automatically improves value; the extra benefits must exceed the additional cost and administrative burden.
Common comparison mistakes
- Treating “up to 26X” or “up to 17X” as card-only earnings. Those figures include IHG membership and elite-status points.
- Counting a free night at its maximum theoretical value. Variable pricing, the 40,000-point certificate cap and date-specific availability can reduce what you can book.
- Assuming fourth-night-free applies to every stay. It is for eligible reward-night stays of four or more consecutive nights under IHG’s U.S. Chase-cardmember rules.
- Valuing a portal credit without checking prices. Compare the Chase Travel total, cancellation terms and direct-booking price.
- Using a flexible card’s transfer partners without checking availability first. A transfer is generally difficult to reverse, so locate a bookable award before moving points.
- Choosing from the welcome bonus alone. A one-time offer cannot compensate for years of unused benefits or an annual fee you do not want.
- Carrying interest to earn points. Rewards are not a reason to pay credit-card interest or miss a payment.
How to verify the decision before applying
Recheck the issuer’s live product page and the detailed cardmember terms on the day you apply. Confirm the annual fee, welcome-offer deadline, spending requirement, category definitions, foreign-transaction policy, status terms, certificate expiration and fourth-night-free booking instructions. For a specific trip, search the exact hotel and dates and note the cash price, points price and cancellation policy.
Also confirm that you are eligible for the offer and understand how a new account could affect your credit profile. If the card’s value depends on a credit every four years, record the date of the last qualifying application-fee credit so you do not count it twice.

Choose an IHG card when IHG is a dependable part of your travel and you can use its status, direct IHG earning and reward-night benefits. Premier is the paid option for travelers who can use the anniversary night, Platinum status and higher earning rate; Traveler is the no-annual-fee option with Silver status and a lower earning rate. Choose a general travel card when flexibility across airlines and hotel programs is more valuable than concentrating rewards in IHG.
