How to Compare Alger Mutual Funds by Fees, Holdings, and Risk

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

The lowest-cost Alger share class is not automatically the best choice. A useful comparison matches the same prospectus date and share class, then weighs expense ratios against sales charges, minimums, investment mandate, portfolio concentration, market-cap exposure, liquidity, volatility and your own time horizon. The figures can change when Alger updates a prospectus or a fee waiver expires, so treat every number as date-specific.

This guide gives you a repeatable way to compare Alger funds without confusing a fund’s current portfolio with firm-wide holdings or treating a historical rating as a forecast.

Start with a like-for-like comparison

Before opening a spreadsheet, define exactly what you are comparing. Write down the fund name, ticker, share class, prospectus date and the date of the holdings file. A Class A fund in one prospectus is not directly comparable with Class I or Class Z in another, and a portfolio reported at one quarter-end may look materially different a few months later.

For each candidate, capture the gross expense ratio, the net expense ratio if one is shown, any contractual waiver or reimbursement, and the date that arrangement ends. Record the fund’s investment objective, benchmark, sales load or transaction charge, minimum investment, turnover and eligibility rules at the same time. This prevents a low headline expense ratio from hiding a front-end load, a short-lived waiver or an institutional minimum you cannot meet.

Why the date matters

Expense ratios and portfolio data are disclosures, not permanent prices. Fred Alger Management’s Focus Equity disclosures illustrate the problem. A 2025 disclosure listed Class A at 0.95%, Class I at 0.94%, and Class Z at 0.64% without a waiver or 0.63% with a waiver. A later prospectus dated February 28, 2026 listed Class I at 0.95% and Class Z at 0.66%. Those are valid figures for the documents that reported them; they are not a timeless fee schedule.

When you quote a number, attach its owner, date, share class and waiver status. If a waiver has an expiration or termination condition, include that date in your notes and model the fund’s cost after the waiver ends.

Compare fees beyond the expense ratio

The expense ratio is the annual operating cost deducted from fund assets. It can be useful for a first screen, but it is only one part of the amount an investor may pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate gross and net expenses

A gross expense ratio reflects the fund’s operating expenses before contractual reimbursements or fee waivers. A net expense ratio reflects those reductions while they are in force. The net figure can therefore be lower temporarily. Check whether the prospectus describes a binding agreement, its end date and the circumstances under which it can be recouped or terminated.

Use the net ratio to estimate the current cost only when the waiver is still effective. Also record the gross ratio so you can see the potential cost once the arrangement expires. Do not compare one fund’s net ratio with another fund’s gross ratio and call the result conclusive.

Check sales charges and transaction costs

Class A shares may involve a front-end sales charge, while other classes can use different distribution arrangements. A fund with a slightly lower annual expense ratio can still cost more over a short holding period if an upfront charge applies. Read the prospectus fee table and the account platform’s transaction schedule rather than assuming that every brokerage makes the same class available on the same terms.

Turnover also matters. Frequent portfolio trading can create commissions, bid-ask spreads and other transaction costs that are not fully represented by the operating expense ratio. It can also distribute realized gains, creating taxable income in a taxable account. Turnover is not automatically bad—an active manager may trade deliberately—but it belongs in the cost comparison.

Account for minimums and eligibility

Institutional or retirement-plan share classes can carry lower expenses but require a minimum investment or an approved distribution channel. Confirm that you can actually buy the class before using its ratio as your personal benchmark. Note whether a broker, retirement plan or advisory account adds an additional platform fee.

Focus Equity fee example

Disclosure Share class Expense ratio Waiver detail
Fred Alger Management, 2025 prospectus disclosure Class A 0.95% No waiver detail reported for this figure
Fred Alger Management, 2025 prospectus disclosure Class I 0.94% No waiver detail reported for this figure
Fred Alger Management, 2025 prospectus disclosure Class Z 0.64% 0.63% with waiver
Fred Alger Management, prospectus dated February 28, 2026 Class I 0.95% Use the dated prospectus for current terms
Fred Alger Management, prospectus dated February 28, 2026 Class Z 0.66% Use the dated prospectus for current terms

The table shows why you should never answer “Which Alger fund has the lowest fees?” without first specifying the fund, share class and document date. The lowest figure in one disclosure may not be the current figure, and a waiver can change the amount investors actually bear.

Match the mandate and benchmark

Two funds can have similar expenses yet behave very differently because they own different types of companies. Read the investment objective and principal strategies, then identify the benchmark used for performance context. A small-cap strategy, a concentrated growth strategy and an emerging-markets strategy carry different economic and liquidity exposures even if their expense ratios are close.

Questions to answer from the prospectus

  • Does the fund focus on a market-cap segment, a sector, a region or a style such as growth or value?
  • Is the fund diversified under the Investment Company Act or designated non-diversified?
  • How much flexibility does the manager have to hold cash, foreign securities, derivatives or a small number of positions?
  • What benchmark does the fund identify, and does that benchmark actually resemble the portfolio?
  • What turnover range and trading approach does the fund describe?

Do not use a broad-market benchmark to imply that a narrowly focused fund has broad-market risk. Benchmark selection helps explain relative performance; it does not remove the fund’s own concentration, liquidity or currency risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure holdings concentration correctly

Holdings are a snapshot. Use a dated portfolio file or shareholder report for each fund, and record the reporting date next to every percentage. Never substitute Alger’s firm-wide “largest positions” for the securities held by the specific fund you are evaluating.

Capture the portfolio’s concentration

At minimum, record the number of holdings, each of the top 10 positions, the combined percentage represented by those 10 positions, sector weights, geographic exposure and market-cap split. A portfolio with 30 holdings and 55% in its top 10 has a different single-company risk from a portfolio with 150 holdings and 20% in its top 10, even if both are labeled diversified.

Alger’s risk disclosures warn that a small number of holdings makes a fund more vulnerable to a single issuer or event. A focused portfolio can therefore experience a larger gain or loss when one company misses earnings, faces litigation, loses a key product or is affected by a political or regulatory decision.

Read sector and geographic weights together

Top-10 concentration alone can hide a common exposure. Ten companies may span several industries but depend on the same technology supply chain, interest-rate environment or consumer demand. Conversely, a portfolio with many names can still be concentrated in one sector or country. Review sector, country and currency exposures alongside the security list.

Do not treat stale data as current

Retrieved Alger product-page snapshots for Emerging Markets and Focus Equity displayed composition and holdings sections with placeholder dates or data. That means those snapshots cannot support a current top-10 percentage or sector allocation. Obtain the latest dated holdings file, shareholder report or statutory filing before publishing or acting on a comparison. If the newest available file is old, label the age plainly rather than presenting it as today’s portfolio.

Translate market capitalization into risk

Market capitalization affects liquidity, operating history and the range of possible price moves.

Small-cap exposure

Small-cap companies may have shorter operating histories, fewer financial resources and thinner trading markets. A position can be harder to sell quickly without moving the price, especially during a market shock. Their share prices can swing more widely than those of larger companies, and a single contract, financing need or management change can have an outsized effect.

Mid-cap exposure

Mid-cap securities can combine growth potential with more liquidity risk than large-cap stocks. They may also have less diversified revenue streams and less analyst coverage. In a stressed market, the fund may face wider spreads or a longer time to exit a position.

Large-cap exposure

Large companies are not risk-free, but their scale and trading volume can make positions easier to transact. Large-cap concentration in one industry, country or theme can still create substantial portfolio risk, so market-cap labels should be read with sector and holding weights.

Assess concentration, diversification and liquidity together

Alger’s prospectus language states: “Generally, the more broadly a fund invests, the more it spreads its risks and potentially reduces the risk of loss and volatility.” Broad diversification reduces the effect of one issuer, but it cannot eliminate market-wide losses.

A concentrated or non-diversified fund can react more sharply to one company, industry, political event or regulatory change. Liquidity adds another layer: if many investors redeem while the fund owns thinly traded securities, selling may take longer or occur at unfavorable prices. Check the prospectus discussion of liquidity risk, the portfolio’s small- and mid-cap weights, and the size of its largest positions.

Use volatility, drawdowns and ratings as context

Risk is not a single number. Review standard deviation or another volatility measure, the worst historical drawdown, recovery periods and the fund’s behavior in weak markets. Compare those observations with the benchmark over the same periods and confirm that the share class and return series match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret Morningstar ratings carefully

The Focus Equity flyer explains that Morningstar’s rating uses a risk-adjusted return measure based on monthly-return variation, with greater emphasis on downside variation. That makes the rating a historical comparison input, not a promise of future performance. A high rating can coexist with concentration, liquidity or market-cap risks that matter to your circumstances.

Do not compare ratings from different dates as if they were fixed characteristics. Record the rating date, share class and category, and read the methodology before using it in a decision.

Read the loss disclosure literally

Alger states that investing in the stock market involves risks, including the potential loss of principal. A fund’s past volatility or drawdown does not set a floor under future losses. Keep emergency savings and near-term spending needs outside a fund whose value can fall sharply.

  1. Identify the security. Enter the fund name, ticker, share class, prospectus date and holdings-report date.
  2. Record all costs. Enter gross and net expense ratios, sales loads, transaction charges, account minimums and waiver or reimbursement terms, including the end date.
  3. Describe the mandate. Copy the investment objective in your own words, name the benchmark and note any non-diversified designation.
  4. Quantify the portfolio. Enter the number of holdings, top-10 percentage, largest position, sector weights, geographic exposure and market-cap split.
  5. Measure behavior. Add annualized volatility, maximum drawdown, recovery period and turnover for the same time window and share class.
  6. Check access. Confirm that your brokerage, retirement plan or adviser offers the share class and that you meet its minimum.
  7. Test suitability. Compare the potential loss and liquidity profile with your time horizon, cash needs, other investments and tolerance for losing principal.

If a current value is not available, leave the field out of a numerical ranking and identify the dated document you still need. A missing data point is safer than an invented percentage.

Evaluate an Alger prospectus before investing

Begin with the summary section

The summary prospectus states the objective, fees, principal strategies, principal risks and performance presentation. Confirm that the summary’s share class is the one you can buy, then use the statutory prospectus for fuller explanations.

Read the fee table and expense examples

Check whether the table shows gross expenses, net expenses or both. Look for contractual waiver language, reimbursement rights and expiration dates. Review the example showing how expenses affect a hypothetical investment, while remembering that it is an illustration rather than your expected return.

Read principal risks for the actual strategy

Look for small-cap, mid-cap, foreign-market, emerging-markets, concentration, non-diversification, liquidity, active-trading and market risks. The presence of a risk paragraph does not predict a loss; it tells you which mechanisms could produce one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify performance and benchmark periods

Use the annual and calendar-year returns for the same share class, and check whether the benchmark changed. Distinguish returns before and after expenses and avoid comparing a fund’s institutional class with a retail class that has different charges.

Confirm portfolio evidence

Use the most recent shareholder report or dated holdings file for positions and weights. Check whether the report is quarter-end, month-end or another date, and note that active management can change the portfolio after the report.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing by the smallest headline ratio: Include loads, waivers, minimums and platform charges.
  • Mixing share classes: Compare the class you can purchase and keep the class constant across performance and risk data.
  • Mixing dates: Put the prospectus and portfolio dates beside every number.
  • Using firm-wide holdings: Pull positions from the fund’s own report.
  • Assuming many securities means low risk: Check top-10, sector, country and market-cap concentration.
  • Treating a rating as a forecast: Read the methodology and rating date, then assess your own downside tolerance.
  • Ignoring taxes and turnover: Consider realized gains and transaction costs in a taxable account.
  • Overlooking liquidity: Review how easily the fund’s small- and mid-cap positions could be sold during stress.

Make the final suitability decision

After collecting the data, ask whether the fund’s risk belongs in your portfolio, not merely whether it beat another fund. A higher-cost fund could be reasonable if its mandate fills a deliberate gap and you accept its concentration and volatility. A lower-cost share class may be unsuitable if you cannot meet its minimum or if the strategy duplicates positions you already own.

Use four final checks:

  • Time horizon: Can you leave the money invested through a severe drawdown?
  • Liquidity needs: Will you need the money soon enough that selling during a downturn is plausible?
  • Portfolio role: Does the fund diversify your existing holdings or add more exposure to the same sectors, countries or companies?
  • Loss tolerance: What level of temporary and permanent loss would cause you to sell at the worst time?

Update the worksheet whenever Alger issues a new prospectus, changes a waiver, publishes a shareholder report or posts a new holdings file. A comparison remains useful only while its dates, share classes and assumptions remain visible.
