The fairest way to compare AI stocks is to put revenue growth, profit margins, and valuation on the same time period, accounting basis, and share-price date. Start by separating chip designers from cloud platforms, measure both total-company and AI-related revenue, keep GAAP and adjusted figures in separate columns, and then test each stock’s price against the growth and profitability it can sustain. Using that method, NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 results show faster growth and higher gross margin than the cited Microsoft and AMD figures, while Microsoft offers a larger, more diversified earnings base and AMD combines a smaller base with accelerating data-center sales. None is automatically “best”: the answer depends on whether the valuation premium is justified by durable growth, margin quality, cash generation, and execution risk.
What does a meaningful AI-stock comparison include?
A useful comparison has three layers: operating performance, business exposure, and the price investors are paying. Looking only at a company’s headline revenue can mislead because AI may be a core business for one company, a fast-growing segment for another, and an indirect demand driver for a third.

Separate companies by economic model before ranking them. NVIDIA and AMD are chip designers whose results are strongly tied to accelerator demand, semiconductor supply, product cycles, and hyperscaler capital spending. Microsoft is a diversified software and cloud platform; its cloud growth includes AI services but also databases, infrastructure, productivity software, and other workloads. A total-company comparison answers a different question from an AI-segment comparison, so label which one you are doing.
Use one measurement window
Choose either the same fiscal year for every company or a trailing-twelve-month period ending on a common date. Do not rank a full-year result for one company against a single quarter for another. Fiscal years can end in different months, and a fast-changing product cycle can make a few months materially different.

Keep accounting bases separate
Put GAAP revenue, gross profit, operating income, net income, and free cash flow in one set of columns. If you also use management’s adjusted or non-GAAP numbers, place them in parallel columns with every adjustment defined. Investment cycles, stock compensation, inventory charges, and other exclusions can materially change the apparent margin.
What do the latest cited results show?
The figures below are published fiscal results cited for 2026 reporting and are not a synchronized market-data valuation table. Their periods differ, so they illustrate the evidence to collect rather than a standalone ranking.
| Company | Reporting period | Total revenue and growth | AI-related or data-center measure | Profitability evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | Fiscal 2026 | $215.938 billion, up 65% year over year | Data-center revenue $193.7 billion, up 68% (about 89.7% of total revenue, calculated from the published figures) | 71.1% GAAP gross margin; $130.387 billion operating income |
| Microsoft | Fiscal 2026 | $331.839 billion, up 18% | Microsoft Cloud revenue $214.4 billion, up 27% (about 64.6% of total revenue; cloud includes more than AI) | $155.237 billion operating income, an implied GAAP operating margin of about 46.8% |
| AMD | Fiscal 2025 | $34.6 billion, up 34% | Data-center revenue $16.6 billion, up 32% (about 48.0% of total revenue) | 50% gross margin |
| AMD | Second quarter of fiscal 2026 | $11.536 billion, up 50% | Quarterly figure; do not rank directly against the full-year figures above | 54% GAAP gross margin |
NVIDIA’s data-center share is high because its accelerated-computing business dominates the company. Microsoft Cloud is a broad reporting category, so its 27% growth is not an AI-only growth rate. AMD’s annual data-center share is lower, and its quarterly acceleration needs to be tested over several periods for durability. The calculations of segment share and Microsoft’s operating margin are derived from the published amounts and are approximate.
How do I normalize revenue growth across AI stocks?
Normalize revenue before deciding which company is growing fastest. Record the period, currency, acquisition effects, reported revenue, and the comparable prior-period revenue in the same worksheet.
Step 1: Select fiscal-year or trailing-twelve-month revenue
For an annual comparison, use each company’s latest completed fiscal year and disclose the fiscal-year end. For a current view, calculate trailing-twelve-month revenue by adding the four most recent quarters. Use the same approach for every company and show the end date beside every number.
Step 2: Calculate growth consistently
Use (current-period revenue ÷ prior-period revenue) − 1. State whether growth is reported, constant-currency, or adjusted for acquisitions and divestitures. A reported 65% increase and a constant-currency increase are not interchangeable.
Step 3: Show absolute scale as well as the rate
A percentage can be inflated by a small starting base. NVIDIA added far more dollars than AMD even when their percentage rates are closer than their revenue totals suggest. Include both revenue and the year-over-year percentage so readers can see scale.

Step 4: Isolate AI exposure
Include the closest disclosed AI-related segment, but name the category exactly as the company reports it. NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 data-center revenue was $193.7 billion, up 68%. Microsoft Cloud reached $214.4 billion, up 27%, but that category is broader than AI. AMD’s fiscal 2025 data-center revenue was $16.6 billion, up 32%.
Step 5: Check mix and concentration
Ask what products and customers produced the growth. A surge concentrated in a few hyperscalers has a different risk profile from growth spread across enterprise software, consumer products, and multiple regions. Also check whether a new product launch, supply release, or acquisition makes the period unusually strong.
Which profitability measures matter most?
Use margin level, margin trend, and cash conversion together. Gross margin shows pricing power and product economics; operating margin includes research, sales, and infrastructure investment; free-cash-flow margin shows how much accounting profit becomes spendable cash.
Gross margin
NVIDIA reported a 71.1% GAAP gross margin for fiscal 2026, compared with AMD’s 50% GAAP gross margin for fiscal 2025 and 54% GAAP gross margin in AMD’s second quarter of fiscal 2026. These are not the same periods, and semiconductor product mix can move quarterly margins sharply. Compare like-for-like periods before drawing a conclusion.
Operating and net margin
Calculate operating margin as GAAP operating income divided by revenue, and net margin as GAAP net income divided by revenue. Microsoft reported fiscal 2026 operating income of $155.237 billion on $331.839 billion of revenue, implying an operating margin of approximately 46.8%. A high operating margin can coexist with heavy future investment, so examine research spending, data-center capital expenditure, and depreciation rather than treating the percentage as permanent.
Free-cash-flow margin
Free-cash-flow margin is free cash flow divided by revenue. It helps distinguish accounting earnings from cash available for debt reduction, buybacks, or reinvestment. For cloud platforms, capital expenditure can be substantial; for chip designers, inventory purchases and supply commitments can temporarily absorb cash. Use the company’s stated free-cash-flow definition and reconcile it to operating cash flow where possible.
GAAP versus adjusted results
Maintain separate GAAP and adjusted columns. Adjusted results may exclude stock-based compensation, amortization, restructuring, acquisition costs, or inventory-related charges. AMD has disclosed inventory and related charges associated with export controls; removing such a charge can be useful for a normalized view, but the GAAP result still records the economic effect. Never combine NVIDIA non-GAAP figures with AMD quarterly GAAP figures in one ranking.

Read the trend, not one margin
Record at least three comparable periods when available. Rising gross margin with stable operating expenses suggests improving economics; rising gross margin paired with sharply higher research or infrastructure costs may leave operating margin flat. Falling margins during a demand boom can signal expedited freight, shortages, pricing pressure, or an unfavorable product mix.
How should I value an AI stock?
Valuation is a separate, date-sensitive judgment. A high-growth company can deserve a higher multiple, but the premium must be tested against the durability of growth, the quality of margins, and the cash investment required to produce that growth.
Use a synchronized valuation snapshot
Choose one timestamp and record the share-price source, market close or intraday time, currency, diluted share count, total debt, cash and investments, and analyst-estimate convention. Refresh the snapshot immediately before publication because prices and consensus estimates change continuously. The cited results do not provide a synchronized set of current multiples, so do not insert unsourced P/E or enterprise-value figures.
| Metric | Formula | What it answers | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trailing P/E | Share price ÷ trailing diluted EPS | What investors pay for the last four quarters of GAAP earnings | Can look extreme when earnings are temporarily depressed or negative |
| Forward P/E | Share price ÷ forward consensus EPS | Price relative to expected next-period earnings | Depends on the estimate date, analyst coverage, and forecast revisions |
| EV/sales | Enterprise value ÷ revenue | Useful when earnings are immature or distorted by investment | Ignores margin quality; compare companies with similar business models |
| EV/EBIT | Enterprise value ÷ operating income | Prices the operating business before interest and taxes | Not meaningful when EBIT is negative or unusually cyclical |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow ÷ equity value | Cash return implied by the current price | Can be depressed by a temporary build in inventory or capital expenditure |
Match the denominator to the company
Use P/E only when earnings are positive and reasonably representative. For an early-cycle chip business with volatile earnings, EV/sales paired with a normalized operating-margin assumption can be more informative. For a mature, cash-generative platform, forward P/E and free-cash-flow yield may carry more weight. Do not compare an EV/sales multiple for a low-margin hardware business with a software platform’s EV/sales multiple without adjusting for expected margins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest the premium with a simple sensitivity range
Build cases for slower, base, and faster revenue growth; a range of sustainable operating margins; and a range of terminal valuation multiples. This reveals whether the current price requires an optimistic combination of assumptions. If a stock remains attractive only under the fastest growth and highest margin case, treat that as a high-expectations investment rather than a low-risk bargain.
How can I build a repeatable comparison worksheet?
Use one row per company and one column per metric, with a date and definition in every header. The following sequence keeps the analysis reproducible.
- Define the universe. Label each company as a chip designer, cloud or software platform, or another AI-exposed business. State whether the final ranking is total-company or AI-segment focused.
- Lock the period. Select the same fiscal-year or trailing-twelve-month end date and record each fiscal-year convention.
- Enter revenue data. Add absolute revenue, prior-period revenue, reported growth, currency, acquisitions, and the closest disclosed AI-related segment.
- Calculate exposure. Divide the AI-related segment by total revenue, but mark categories such as Microsoft Cloud as broader than AI.
- Enter profitability. Record GAAP gross, operating, and net margins plus free-cash-flow margin. Add adjusted measures only in separately labeled columns.
- Investigate unusual items. Flag inventory charges, export-control effects, stock compensation, restructuring, supply commitments, and other items that affect comparability.
- Set the price date. Capture the share price, diluted shares, debt, cash, and the exact analyst-estimate date before calculating valuation.
- Calculate multiples. Produce trailing P/E, forward P/E, EV/sales, EV/EBIT, and free-cash-flow yield using consistent definitions.
- Stress-test assumptions. Model slower growth, lower margins, higher capital expenditure, and a lower exit multiple. Note which assumption changes the result most.
- Write the conclusion. Explain which stock offers the best balance of growth, profitability, valuation, and risk for the investor’s time horizon; do not declare a winner from one metric.
What business risks can overturn the numbers?
Financial ratios describe the past. AI businesses also require an assessment of whether demand and economics can persist.

Customer concentration and hyperscaler spending
Large cloud providers can account for substantial accelerator and infrastructure demand. If a few customers slow capital expenditure, inventory can build and revenue growth can decelerate quickly. Check customer concentration disclosures, backlog quality, and payment terms.
Supply constraints and capacity
Advanced packaging, memory, foundry capacity, networking components, and energy availability can limit shipments even when demand is strong. A temporary shortage can support pricing, while additional capacity can later pressure margins.
Export controls and geography
Export restrictions can limit which products may be sold into specific markets and can create inventory or redesign costs. AMD’s filings identify export-control-related inventory charges, illustrating why geographic and regulatory checks belong beside the margin analysis.
Capital intensity and infrastructure cost
AI growth requires data centers, networking, research, and long-lived equipment. Compare capital expenditure with depreciation and operating cash flow. A company can report impressive operating income while investing heavily to support future capacity.
Demand durability and product transitions
Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO, said, “Computing demand is growing exponentially — the agentic AI inflection point has arrived.” That statement describes management’s outlook, not a guaranteed forecast. Test it against customer budgets, competing architectures, product launch schedules, and evidence that customers are earning returns on their AI investments.

How should I interpret NVIDIA, Microsoft, and AMD together?
The cited figures support different investment narratives rather than a single score. NVIDIA combines the highest reported growth in this set with a 71.1% GAAP gross margin and data-center revenue that represents roughly nine-tenths of total revenue. That concentration gives investors direct AI exposure but also makes the company sensitive to accelerator demand, supply, export rules, and the sustainability of unusually high margins.
Microsoft has the largest total revenue and operating-income base in the comparison. Its 18% fiscal 2026 revenue growth and 27% Microsoft Cloud growth show substantial expansion, but the cloud figure includes businesses beyond AI. A buyer must therefore estimate how much of cloud growth and future capital spending is genuinely AI-driven rather than assigning the entire category an AI premium.

AMD’s fiscal 2025 revenue grew 34%, with data-center revenue up 32%, and its second-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue rose 50% with a 54% GAAP gross margin. The smaller base can produce faster percentages when new products gain share, while quarterly acceleration is more volatile than a full-year trend. Export-control-related inventory charges and the need to scale production are important checks on normalized profitability.
To choose among them, compare each company’s synchronized valuation with a conservative range of future growth, operating margin, and free-cash-flow conversion. The company with the highest growth is not automatically the best investment if its price assumes that growth continues indefinitely.

- Mixing periods: ranking a quarterly AMD figure against annual NVIDIA and Microsoft figures.
- Mixing accounting bases: placing adjusted earnings beside GAAP earnings without labeling the adjustments.
- Calling a broad segment “AI revenue”: Microsoft Cloud includes more than AI services.
- Ignoring scale: comparing growth percentages without showing dollar revenue.
- Using an undated multiple: a P/E or EV/sales figure is incomplete without its price date and denominator.
- Treating management guidance as evidence of results: forecasts require scenario testing and later verification.
- Overlooking cash needs: high operating income does not prove high free-cash-flow conversion during an infrastructure build-out.
- Assuming one charge is always nonrecurring: recurring inventory, restructuring, or stock-compensation costs may be part of the business model.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I refresh an AI-stock comparison?
Refresh the price, share count, debt, cash, and consensus estimates whenever you publish or make an investment decision. Rebuild the operating columns after each company’s earnings release, and keep the prior version so you can see whether growth, margins, or estimates changed.
What if an AI company has negative earnings?
Use EV/sales, gross margin, operating-cash-flow trends, and a clearly stated path to profitability instead of forcing a P/E calculation. A negative or tiny denominator can make P/E meaningless, while EV/sales still requires a margin and cash-burn scenario.
How do stock buybacks affect valuation comparisons?
Use diluted shares for per-share earnings and note the share count’s direction over time. Buybacks can lift EPS even when total net income is flat, while stock compensation can offset the reduction; compare total compensation expense and dilution, not EPS alone.
Should I compare companies in their reporting currency?
Keep each company’s reported currency for the operating analysis, then convert only when a common-currency presentation is necessary. Use the same exchange-rate convention for revenue, profit, debt, and cash, and identify whether the conversion is spot-rate or period-average.
