How to Compare AI Model Pricing Across Providers

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

The cheapest headline token rate is rarely the cheapest way to run an AI workload. A reliable comparison uses the same request volume, input and output token mix, context length, cache behavior, tools, service tier, region, currency and price date for every provider. Calculate the full cost per request, then multiply by expected volume and test how the result changes when your workload or provider settings change.

This method applies to direct APIs and to cloud platforms that resell model access. Keep those channels in separate rows: the model name may be identical while regional processing, platform fees, quotas and billing terms differ.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What a fair AI pricing comparison includes

An AI bill is a bundle of metered services, not one number beside a model name. Token charges may differ for input, output, cached input, cache writes and cache reads. A provider can also price batch processing, flexible capacity, priority or fast modes, tool calls, grounding, image generation, audio, video, storage and platform access separately.

Start with one representative workload. Without a fixed workload, a price ranking is meaningless because one application may send mostly long documents while another generates much more output. Record these assumptions before collecting prices:

  • Requests per day and per month, including expected retries.
  • Average input tokens and output tokens per request, plus the high-percentile case that drives capacity planning.
  • Modalities used: text, image, audio or video.
  • Maximum context length and the typical context actually sent.
  • Latency target, throughput requirement and tolerance for queued or delayed jobs.
  • Required geography, data-residency boundary and currency.
  • Reliability target, rate-limit needs and whether a service-level commitment is required.
  • Expected cache-hit rate, cache-write frequency and cache retention or storage assumptions.
  • Share of work eligible for batch, flex, priority or fast processing.
  • Tool, search, grounding or external-function call frequency.

Use the same assumptions for every provider. If a provider cannot support one requirement, mark the option as incompatible instead of silently changing the workload.

Build a dated rate-card snapshot

Prices and model catalogs change. Save a copy of every rate card or billing page with the effective date shown by the provider and the date and time you retrieved it. Record the exact model ID, endpoint, region, currency and service tier. “The provider’s flagship model” is not a stable identifier; a later catalog update can point to a different model with different limits.

Your comparison sheet should have one row for each billable configuration, not just one row for each company. Separate direct first-party API access from the same model delivered through a cloud platform. AWS documentation, for example, says OpenAI models on Amazon Bedrock are billed through AWS and that regional-processing services use regional rates. Anthropic likewise notes that partner-operated platforms can have independent regional pricing. A cloud row can therefore have a different effective price, quota, tax treatment or data path even when the underlying model name matches.

Field What to record Why it changes the answer
Provider and channel First-party API, cloud marketplace or other partner endpoint Platform markup, quotas, invoices and regional processing can differ.
Model identifier Exact public model ID and version or snapshot Aliases can move to a new model; versions can have different rates and limits.
Endpoint and region API endpoint, processing geography and account region Regional or partner pricing and residency rules may apply.
Service tier Standard, batch, flex, priority, fast or equivalent Latency, capacity and unit prices can trade off.
Input rates Normal input, cached input or cache-read, and cache-write Repeated context may cost much less or more depending on cache behavior.
Output rate Generated tokens, including any reasoning-token treatment Output-heavy workloads can reverse a ranking based on input price.
Non-token charges Tools, grounding, images, audio, video, storage and platform fees These can dominate a small text-token bill.
Effective and retrieval dates Date the rate takes effect and when you captured it Lets you detect stale comparisons and explain later invoice changes.

OpenAI’s rate card separates input, cached input, cache writes and output, and publishes distinct Standard, Batch, Flex and Fast-mode tables, including short- and long-context columns. OpenAI also states that the Responses, Chat Completions, Realtime, Batch and Assistants APIs are not priced separately; usage is billed at the selected model’s rates. Anthropic’s official pricing separates standard and batch token rates, cache-write and cache-hit categories, and regional or partner-platform pricing. Google’s Gemini pricing lists Standard, Batch, Flex and Priority modes, along with context caching and grounding charges.

Normalize prices before comparing them

Token rates are usually displayed per million tokens. Convert every token price to a common unit, preferably USD per 1 million input tokens and USD per 1 million output tokens. Keep cached-input, cache-write, batch, flex, priority and fast-mode columns separate rather than averaging them into one blended number.

For a request billed only on ordinary input and output tokens, use:

request_cost = (input_tokens / 1,000,000 × input_rate) + (output_tokens / 1,000,000 × output_rate)

Then add each applicable charge:

full_request_cost = request_cost + cache_cost + tool_cost + grounding_cost + storage_cost + platform_cost

Finally:

monthly_cost = full_request_cost × expected_monthly_requests

Do not hide rounding in the calculation. Keep token counts at the precision available in your telemetry, calculate each component, and round only the displayed result. If a provider bills a minimum unit, request block or separate image or audio unit, model that rule explicitly rather than treating it as a token rate.

Illustrative arithmetic, not a provider quote

Suppose a hypothetical workload sends 120,000 input tokens and receives 20,000 output tokens per month. If an imaginary rate card listed an input rate of $2 per million tokens and an output rate of $8 per million tokens, the token subtotal would be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Input: 120,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $2 = $0.24.
  • Output: 20,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $8 = $0.16.
  • Token subtotal: $0.40.

That $0.40 is not the monthly bill if the workload also uses cached context, search grounding, tool calls, storage or a paid service tier. The numbers above are solely a calculation example; replace them with the dated rates in your own snapshot.

Model caching as its own cost scenario

Long system instructions, document collections and conversation history often repeat. Providers may charge a cache-write rate when context is stored and a cache-read or cached-input rate when it is reused. Some services also impose retention, minimum-size or expiration rules.

Measure cache behavior from logs instead of assuming every repeated token is a cache hit. Add these fields to your model:

  • Cacheable tokens written per request or per document.
  • Cache-read tokens per request.
  • Cache-hit rate by workload type.
  • Cache lifetime, eviction behavior and any storage fee.
  • Extra latency or eligibility constraints associated with caching.

Run at least three cases: zero cache hits, the expected hit rate and a best-case high-hit scenario. A model with a higher ordinary input rate can still be cheaper when a large, stable context is read repeatedly; the reverse is also possible when cache writes are frequent or the context changes every request.

Account for batch, flex, priority and fast modes

Batch processing can lower unit prices when the provider can defer execution, but it is unsuitable for interactive responses that must meet a tight latency target. Flex modes may trade predictable capacity or speed for a lower rate. Priority and fast modes can cost more in exchange for faster service or preferred capacity.

Assign each request to the mode it will actually use. If 70% of jobs can wait for batch and 30% require interactive service, calculate two subtotals rather than applying one blended price without showing the mix:

  1. Estimate monthly tokens for interactive requests.
  2. Estimate monthly tokens for deferred requests.
  3. Apply the Standard, Priority, Batch, Flex or Fast rate that corresponds to each group.
  4. Add any eligibility limits, minimums, queue-time assumptions or separate platform fees.
  5. Vary the batch share in sensitivity cases to see when the operational benefit disappears.

A low batch rate is not a saving if delayed jobs force retries, duplicate work or a second interactive call. Include those extra requests in the monthly volume.

Include tools, grounding and multimodal usage

Token arithmetic covers only token-metered portions of a request. Search grounding, function or tool calls, image inputs and outputs, audio, video and persistent storage may have separate units and prices. Count them directly from application telemetry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s documentation says Gemini API pricing is based on input token count and output token count, while its pricing materials separately list context caching and grounding charges. Google also states that Google Search grounding includes 5,000 free requests per month for applicable models, after which the charge is $14 per 1,000 requests. Treat that allowance as a monthly quota for the specified models, not as a universal free tier for every Gemini request or every search feature.

For any tool or grounding feature, record:

  • Calls per request and calls per month.
  • Whether failed, timed-out or retried calls are billable.
  • Free allowance, overage rate and any model-specific eligibility.
  • Whether tool results add input tokens on the next model turn.
  • Any external provider, storage or data-transfer charge outside the model invoice.

For images, audio and video, keep modality units in separate columns. Do not convert them to text tokens unless the provider explicitly bills them that way; a token-equivalent estimate can conceal a materially different charge.

Keep region and platform costs visible

Geography affects more than currency conversion. Providers may publish regional rates, partner-specific prices or different processing policies. A requirement to keep data in a particular country can eliminate a nominally cheaper endpoint.

For each candidate, verify:

  • Where prompts and outputs are processed and stored.
  • Whether the endpoint is first-party or operated by a cloud partner.
  • Which currency appears on the invoice and how taxes or foreign-exchange fees are handled.
  • Regional quotas, rate limits and model availability.
  • Whether cross-region failover changes the price or violates residency requirements.

Present direct API and cloud-platform totals in separate rows even when the underlying model is the same. This prevents a cloud markup, committed-spend discount or regional surcharge from being mistaken for a model-level price difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run sensitivity analysis instead of trusting one estimate

A single workload estimate hides the assumptions most likely to change. Create a small scenario grid that varies:

  • Input-to-output ratio: short prompts with long answers, balanced traffic and long prompts with short answers.
  • Cache-hit rate: 0%, expected and high.
  • Batch share: none, expected and maximum operationally acceptable.
  • Context size: ordinary requests and the longest supported context.
  • Region or endpoint: required geography versus a permitted alternative.
  • Retry and tool-call frequency: normal traffic and an incident or peak case.
  • Monthly request volume: forecast, low case and growth case.

For each scenario, report cost per request, cost per month and the percentage contributed by each component. A tornado chart or simple spreadsheet conditional formatting can reveal the dominant driver. If output tokens account for most spending, an input-rate comparison will not help. If grounding dominates, switching models may matter less than reducing unnecessary searches.

Compare effective cost with quality and operations

Price is only one constraint. A cheaper model that fails more often, needs longer prompts, produces unusable output or requires multiple retries may cost more per completed task.

Evaluate candidates on representative tasks using the same acceptance criteria:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Task quality and error rate, measured on a fixed sample.
  • Median and high-percentile latency under the intended service tier.
  • Throughput and rate-limit headroom at projected volume.
  • Context-window capacity for the largest real request.
  • Reliability, timeout behavior and retry requirements.
  • Structured-output, tool-use and multimodal support required by the application.
  • Model retirement, alias movement and price-change risk.

No independent benchmark or hands-on latency test establishes a universal winner here. Provider documentation can describe billing dimensions, but quality, throughput and service-level claims require testing on your own representative tasks or relying on a provider-specific commitment that covers your use case.

A repeatable comparison workflow

  1. Write the workload specification. State monthly requests, token distributions, modalities, context maximum, latency target, region, reliability requirement, cache behavior and tool use.
  2. Choose exact candidates. Record provider, model ID, endpoint, account type and service tier. Do not compare a moving alias with a pinned version without noting the difference.
  3. Capture the rate cards. Save effective dates, retrieval timestamps and the relevant tables for normal, cached, batch, flex, priority and fast processing.
  4. Separate every meter. Create columns for input, output, cache write, cache read, tools, grounding, storage, modality units and platform fees.
  5. Normalize currency and units. Convert token rates to a common per-million-token basis and document the exchange-rate date if conversion is necessary.
  6. Calculate request and monthly totals. Use observed token counts where possible, then apply the expected request volume and retry rate.
  7. Run sensitivity cases. Change token mix, cache hits, batch share, context size, region and tool frequency.
  8. Test operational fit. Measure quality and latency on representative tasks and confirm quotas, residency and reliability requirements.
  9. Choose with a decision rule. For example, reject any option that misses the quality or residency threshold, then select the lowest-cost option among the survivors.
  10. Schedule a refresh. Recheck official pricing and model catalogs before purchase, launch and each major traffic or model change.

Spreadsheet layout you can reuse

A practical workbook has four tabs:

  • Workload: requests, input and output tokens, modalities, cache-hit assumptions, tool calls, retry rate, region and latency target.
  • Rates: provider, model ID, endpoint, effective date, retrieval timestamp, currency, service tier and every rate-card field.
  • Calculations: per-request and monthly formulas, scenario selectors and component subtotals.
  • Validation: quality scores, latency measurements, error rates, quota observations and links or archived references to the official billing pages you used.

Use formulas rather than typing totals. Add a warning when a rate-card snapshot is older than your review threshold, when a model ID changes, or when a scenario uses a region or tier that the account cannot access.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

Ranking by input price alone

Why it fails: output, cache, tools and grounding may cost more than input. Fix: calculate the complete request and monthly bill with the actual token mix.

Comparing different workloads

Why it fails: one provider may be tested with short prompts while another receives long documents. Fix: hold request volume, token counts, context and modalities constant.

Blending service tiers

Why it fails: batch, flex, priority and fast modes have different latency and capacity assumptions. Fix: model each tier separately and state the share of traffic assigned to it.

Ignoring cache writes and misses

Why it fails: repeated context is not automatically free. Fix: measure cache writes, reads, hit rate and retention, then run zero-hit and expected-hit cases.

Mixing first-party and cloud prices

Why it fails: regional processing and partner billing can add different rates, quotas or fees. Fix: keep channels in separate rows and verify the required geography.

Treating a free allowance as unlimited

Why it fails: allowances are usually monthly, model-specific or feature-specific. Fix: record the allowance, eligibility and overage rate beside the charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using stale model aliases

Why it fails: an alias can move or a rate card can change after the analysis. Fix: save the exact model ID, effective date and retrieval timestamp, and refresh before launch or purchase.

What to retain for an audit trail

Keep the workload assumptions, raw usage export, rate-card snapshot, formulas, scenario outputs and quality or latency test notes together. When an invoice differs from the estimate, you can identify whether the cause was token growth, a cache-hit change, a tier switch, a regional endpoint, a new tool charge or a changed rate card. This record also makes a future provider comparison reproducible instead of starting from a new headline price.

Decision rule

Select the lowest effective-cost configuration that satisfies the workload’s quality, latency, context, reliability, quota and data-residency requirements. Recalculate when the workload mix, model ID, region, service tier or provider rate card changes. A transparent calculation with dated inputs is more valuable than a permanent “cheapest model” ranking.
