Compare an AI ETF with a broad-market index fund by looking past the labels: check what each fund’s index actually holds, how it weights and updates those holdings, what it costs to own and trade, and how its risks fit your portfolio. Broad-market funds are generally designed to cover a wider slice of the market; an AI ETF targets a narrower theme that may overlap substantially with technology stocks you already own. Neither label guarantees diversification, low costs, or better returns.

What is the difference between an AI ETF and a broad-market index fund?

An AI ETF seeks exposure to an artificial-intelligence-related theme, while a broad-market index fund seeks to track a wider market index. The exact exposure depends on each fund’s objective and benchmark—not simply on the name printed on the fund.

Investor.gov defines an index fund as a fund that seeks to track the performance of a market index. Index funds may use market-cap weighting, sampling, or other approaches. A broad-market fund might track an index such as the S&P 500, Russell 2000, or Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index; those benchmarks represent different parts of the market, so “broad market” does not mean every fund covers the same companies.

An AI ETF, by contrast, follows an AI-related index or strategy whose provider decides what qualifies as AI exposure. The First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF (FAI), for example, seeks results corresponding generally to the Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence Index before fees and expenses. Its cited summary prospectus is dated February 2, 2026. The Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (AIQ) seeks results corresponding generally to the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index before fees and expenses; its cited summary prospectus is dated April 1, 2026. These objectives illustrate why two funds with similar thematic names can still use different benchmarks and produce different portfolios.

Those prospectus dates identify the documents cited here, not a guarantee that they remain the latest versions. Check each fund’s current filings and materials before relying on its stated objective or portfolio.

What should I compare before choosing between them?

Use a like-for-like checklist that separates the index’s design from the fund’s cost and trading experience. Start with the benchmark, then examine actual holdings, implementation costs, risk, and the job you expect the fund to do in your portfolio.

Comparison point AI ETF Broad-market index fund
Objective and benchmark Tracks or pursues an AI-related index or strategy. Confirm the provider’s definition of AI and the exact index or strategy. Seeks to track a broader market benchmark, such as the S&P 500, Russell 2000, or Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index. Check which market and segment the specific index represents.
Diversification May be concentrated by theme, sector, geography, or a small number of large positions. Review the holdings and their weights. Usually covers a wider market basket, but market-cap weighting can still give the largest companies substantial influence.
Costs Compare the expense ratio with turnover, trading costs, bid-ask spread, premium or discount to NAV, and tracking difference. The thematic label alone does not establish the total cost. Passive management can reduce management costs, but the specific fund’s expense ratio and tracking results still need checking.
Possible portfolio role Often considered as a narrower theme or tilt. Assess whether that exposure duplicates existing technology or growth holdings. Often considered for wider core exposure, depending on the benchmark and the investor’s goals.
Risks and behavior Theme selection, methodology, concentration, and limited performance history can lead to behavior that differs from the overall market. Still subject to market losses, fees, trading costs, tracking error, and the possibility of underperforming its index.

This table describes common differences, not universal rules. A particular AI ETF can have a different portfolio from another AI ETF, and two broad-market funds can track different benchmarks or implement the same benchmark differently.

How do I check what an AI ETF actually invests in?

Look through the fund to its holdings rather than treating “AI” as a complete description of its exposure. Compare the positions, weights, sectors, countries, and overlap with funds you already own.

Read the index rules

Find the exact benchmark name and its provider. Then examine the methodology for its eligible universe, inclusion criteria, weighting method, rebalancing schedule, and reconstitution schedule. Eligibility rules determine which companies may enter the index; weighting determines how much each qualifying company can affect results; rebalancing and reconstitution explain how and when those exposures may change.

A label does not tell you whether the index emphasizes companies developing AI, companies using AI, related technology, data, or another provider-defined category. The methodology is the place to establish what the fund means by AI exposure. Investor.gov cautions that different indexes can hold the same securities or assign some securities more weight than an investor might expect.

Inspect the portfolio, not just the holdings count

Use the fund’s current holdings information and look at how the portfolio is distributed. A large number of positions does not by itself prove that the fund is well diversified: a few large weights, related industries, or a narrow theme can still drive much of its behavior.

  • Top holdings and weights: Note the largest positions and the share of assets they represent, especially the combined weight of the largest holdings.
  • Sector mix: Identify whether the portfolio is concentrated in one or a few sectors. A thematic fund can hold companies from multiple sectors while remaining exposed to a common theme.
  • Country mix: Check whether exposure is concentrated in particular countries or spread across markets.
  • Existing-fund overlap: Compare the AI ETF’s holdings with those in your broad-market funds and other investments. Overlap can increase exposure to a company even when it appears in several different funds.

Repeat the same checks for the broad-market fund. Its basket will generally be wider, but a market-cap-weighted index can still be dominated by the largest companies. An AI ETF and a broad index may therefore share important positions even though their stated objectives differ.

How do I compare the real costs of each fund?

Do not stop at the expense ratio. Compare the recurring operating expense with the costs and price effects involved in buying, holding, and selling the fund.

Separate fund expenses from trading frictions

  • Expense ratio: This is the fund’s stated operating expense measure. Compare the figures for the specific funds and share classes, using their current documents.
  • Turnover and trading costs: A fund that changes positions more often may incur trading costs within the portfolio. Turnover is not itself a complete measure of those costs, so do not treat it as an all-in fee.
  • Bid-ask spread: ETF shares trade at market prices. The spread between the price available to buy and the price available to sell is a trading friction to consider alongside any brokerage commission or account fee.
  • Premium or discount to net asset value (NAV): An ETF’s market price can differ from the per-share value of its underlying assets. Review current NAV information and historical premiums and discounts rather than assuming the market price always equals NAV.
  • Tracking difference: Compare the fund’s results with its stated index over a consistent period. The gap can reflect expenses and other implementation effects; it is distinct from the index’s own return.
  • Brokerage charges: Check whether your account charges a commission or other fee for the transaction. These terms depend on your account and trading arrangement.

Investor.gov puts the effect plainly: “Fees and expenses reduce the value of your investment return.” That applies when comparing an AI ETF with a broad-market fund, even if one looks more compelling by theme or past returns.

There is no universal fee, tracking-error, concentration, or allocation threshold that makes an AI ETF a better or worse choice than every broad-market fund. Compare the actual funds, not an assumed average for either category. A fund’s expense ratio does not capture every trading friction, and a low stated expense ratio does not by itself establish better tracking or execution.

How can I assess liquidity and ETF trading costs?

For an ETF, the price you can trade at may differ from NAV, so assess both the fund’s trading conditions and its underlying portfolio. Review typical trading volume, the bid-ask spread, and premium-or-discount information, then consider whether the fund can be traded efficiently for your intended holding period.

ETF shares trade on exchanges at market prices. Investor.gov and the SEC direct investors to review NAV, median bid-ask spread, and historical premiums and discounts. These measures help distinguish a fund’s operating expense from the cost of entering or exiting a position. A prospectus also describes the fund’s creation and redemption structure; review that information rather than assuming all ETFs operate identically.

Trading volume is one data point, not a complete verdict on liquidity. Use the fund’s prospectus and current trading information together, and consider the size and timing of the transaction you plan to make. The available evidence here does not establish a single volume or spread cutoff that works for every investor or ETF.

What risks can make an AI ETF behave differently from the market?

An AI ETF can be affected by its theme, index methodology, concentration, and performance history; those factors can make its returns differ from a broad-market fund. A broad-market index fund also carries risk: it can lose value, incur fees and trading costs, and lag its index.

Investor.gov warns that ETFs can lose some or all of the money invested. Index funds can underperform their benchmarks because of fees, trading costs, and tracking error. Neither an index-tracking objective nor a broad-market label removes market risk.

For a thematic fund, ask how much of its portfolio depends on the AI-related theme and whether a change in index rules could meaningfully alter exposure. Non-traditional index funds may be complex, less correlated with the market, and limited in performance history. A short or unusual performance record is not a dependable forecast of future returns.

When comparing historical volatility or drawdowns, use comparable periods and remember what the comparison can and cannot show: it describes past behavior, not what either fund will do next. Investor.gov notes that “Past performance is not as important as you might think because past performance does not predict future returns.”

How do I decide which fund fits my portfolio?

Begin with the role you want the fund to play, not with a prediction that AI or the overall market will outperform. A broad-market fund may be considered for core exposure, while an AI ETF may be considered as a narrower thematic tilt; that is a decision framework, not a universal allocation rule.

Before choosing, consider how the fund would change your portfolio’s exposures. If you already own broad-market funds, compare their holdings with the AI ETF’s positions and sector mix. The AI ETF may add a distinct exposure, reinforce positions you already hold, or do some of both. The index’s holdings and rules—not the theme name—show which case is more likely.

Also match the fund’s risks to your goals and time horizon. A concentrated theme can behave differently from the wider market, and a broad-market fund can still fall when its market does. The available evidence does not establish a suitable AI allocation, a minimum holding period, or a rule that one category belongs in every portfolio. Those decisions depend on the investor’s circumstances and should not be inferred from the fund label.

What documents should I read before buying?

Use the fund’s official documents to verify its objective, benchmark, holdings, costs, and risks. For a U.S.-listed ETF, review the current summary prospectus, full prospectus, shareholder report, current holdings, and relevant SEC EDGAR filings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the fund identity. Record the exact fund name, ticker, share class if applicable, and the date of the documents you are using.
  2. Read the summary prospectus and full prospectus. Check the objective, benchmark, strategy, fees and expenses, principal risks, and description of the fund’s operation.
  3. Find the index methodology. Confirm the index provider, eligible securities, screening rules, weighting, rebalancing, and reconstitution process.
  4. Check current holdings and shareholder reporting. Review the actual positions and their weights, then compare those exposures with your other funds.
  5. Review trading and NAV information. Look at the median bid-ask spread, NAV, and historical premiums or discounts, as well as brokerage charges that apply to your account.
  6. Verify that the documents are current. Fund objectives and methodologies can change. The cited FAI summary prospectus is dated February 2, 2026, and the cited AIQ summary prospectus is dated April 1, 2026; check for newer filings before relying on either.

Documents matter more than marketing descriptions because they set out the fund’s stated objective, process, and risks. A fund’s objective describes what it seeks to do; it does not guarantee that it will match its index or produce a particular return.

What does a careful comparison tell you—and what does it not?

A useful comparison can show whether a fund’s index rules, holdings, costs, and trading characteristics align with the exposure you want. It cannot establish that AI-related companies will outperform the broad market, that a fund will track perfectly, or that one category is suitable for every investor.

Do not compare a thematic ETF’s label with a broad-market fund’s label and treat that as an investment analysis. Compare the benchmarks, inspect actual positions and overlap, account for both expenses and trading frictions, and consider the role each fund would serve. This is educational information, not individualized investment advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an AI ETF invest only in companies that build artificial intelligence?

Not necessarily. Whether a company qualifies depends on the particular index or strategy’s definition of AI exposure, which may differ between providers. Read the methodology and holdings to see what the fund actually includes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an AI ETF and an S&P 500 fund own many of the same stocks?

Yes. An AI ETF can overlap with broad-market holdings, and Investor.gov notes that different indexes can hold the same securities. Compare current holdings and weights across the specific funds rather than assuming the names imply separate exposures.

Where can I find an ETF’s premium or discount to NAV?

Check the fund’s current trading and NAV information and the SEC-directed disclosures, including historical premium-or-discount data. The prospectus and fund materials identify the ETF whose data you are reviewing; figures can change over time.

Does a lower expense ratio mean an ETF will perform better?

No. The expense ratio is only one cost measure, and results can also reflect trading costs, spreads, premiums or discounts, and tracking difference. A lower stated expense does not guarantee better returns or closer tracking.
