Compare a United card in two separate passes: first determine what the welcome bonus is realistically worth after you can meet its spending deadline, then determine whether the benefits you will actually use justify the annual fee in every renewal year. The bonus is a one-time incentive; checked bags, lounge access, credits and status-earning features are recurring benefits with conditions.
The offer and terms change. Chase’s Explorer application page displayed the figures below on October 13, 2026, while current Quest and Club annual-fee and welcome-offer details were not established in the same review. Check the live application and Pricing & Terms immediately before applying.

What a fair comparison looks like
A United MileagePlus card can look profitable when its welcome miles are added to the value of every advertised perk. That is not a reliable comparison. A sound decision separates three questions:
- Can you complete the required purchases without buying things you would not otherwise buy?
- Can you redeem the miles for trips you actually want, at an acceptable price after taxes and fees?
- Will the recurring benefits save you money or improve trips often enough to cover the annual fee after any introductory period ends?
Use the welcome bonus only in the first-year calculation. For later years, remove that one-time bonus and count only benefits you expect to use. A card is not a good value merely because the issuer’s headline total is large.

The Explorer offer displayed on October 13, 2026
Chase’s current Explorer application page showed a maximum of 80,000 bonus miles, split into two requirements: 70,000 miles after $3,000 in purchases during the first three months, plus 10,000 miles after adding an authorized user during that same first-three-month period. Treat this as the offer displayed on that date, not as a permanent offer or a promise that every applicant will see it.
The page also stated that the product is unavailable to someone who currently has the card or who received its new-cardmember bonus during the preceding 24 months. That restriction is specific to the terms shown on the page; read the application disclosure for your application date and personal history.
What to verify before submitting an application
- Exact bonus amount and whether it is split into separate milestones.
- Qualifying purchase definition, minimum spend and the precise deadline. Issuers generally measure the period from account opening, not from the date you receive the card.
- Whether an authorized-user requirement is optional for the main bonus or needed for an additional tranche, and whether adding that user creates any account responsibility for you.
- Eligibility language covering current or previous card ownership and prior bonuses.
- Annual fee, introductory fee waiver and the date the first renewal fee will post.
- Exclusions, such as returns, balance transfers, cash advances, fees and other transactions that may not count as purchases.
Do not apply based on a cached advertisement, a screenshot or a search result. The application page and its Pricing & Terms control.

Calculate the first-year value without overstating the miles
Use a personal-value formula
Write down a conservative value for each component rather than assigning a universal value to a mile:
Potential first-year value = reader-specific value of bonus miles + usable first-year benefits − annual fee paid in that period.
For a card with an introductory fee waiver, the first-year fee may be zero while the renewal-year fee is not. Calculate both periods separately. A card that wins during a fee-free first year can lose in year two if you do not use its credits or baggage benefits.
Value miles from an actual redemption
United miles do not have one established cash value. Their usefulness depends on the itinerary, travel dates, cabin, award inventory and the cash price you would otherwise pay. To estimate your value:
- Search United for one or more trips you genuinely expect to take.
- Record the miles required and the taxes and fees on the award.
- Record the comparable cash fare for the same or a genuinely similar itinerary.
- Subtract award taxes and fees from the cash fare you would otherwise pay.
- Divide that net saving by the number of miles required. Use several realistic trips, not the most expensive hypothetical redemption.
If you rarely fly United, would buy a cash ticket anyway, or would let miles expire unused through inattention, assign the bonus a lower value. Do not count a redemption you are unlikely to make.

Count benefits at their usable value
A free checked bag is worth what you would have paid for a bag on trips where the benefit applies, not the airline’s highest possible bag price on every trip. A Club pass has value only if you would otherwise want lounge access on an eligible visit and can use the pass before it expires. A statement credit is worth its face amount only when the qualifying purchase replaces spending you already planned.

Checked bag and boarding benefits
Chase lists a first checked bag for the cardholder and one companion, along with Group 2 priority boarding. Confirm the required payment method, reservation relationship and fare eligibility in the current benefit terms. If you usually travel with carry-on luggage, or your flights already include bags through status or cabin, do not assign the full bag benefit to every trip.
United Club one-time passes
The Explorer package includes two United Club one-time passes each year. Their value depends on your airports, operating hours, guest plans and the rules in effect when you visit. A pass that cannot be used on your routes, or that you would not buy separately, should be valued at zero rather than at a posted lounge price.
Partner credits
Chase lists partner credits with individual terms. Some require enrollment, a qualifying United ticket purchase, minimum spending, an eligible hotel stay booked through United Hotels, or a qualifying rideshare purchase. Read each credit’s activation, merchant, frequency and expiration rules. Do not assume a credit is automatic, transferable or available on any purchase that appears similar.
Car-rental credit restrictions
United MileagePlus Travel terms say card-linked Avis or Budget credits require a qualifying rental booked through the United portal with the relevant United card. The terms specify a minimum rental duration and warn that TravelBank cash may post weeks after the rental is returned. This is not instant cash back: missing the portal, card-payment or rental-duration requirement can make the credit unavailable.

When Quest’s higher fee can make sense
TravelBank credit
Chase lists a $200 annual United TravelBank credit on Quest. Treat it as a restricted travel benefit, not unrestricted cash. Estimate its value from United travel you would buy during the credit’s validity period. If your trips are infrequent, you dislike the booking restrictions, or you would purchase those flights with another carrier, the practical value may be much lower than $200.
Award-flight discount
Quest includes a 10,000-mile award-flight discount, but the spend-based version requires $20,000 in calendar-year purchases. Compare that threshold with your normal eligible spending. Never manufacture purchases to reach it; interest, debt or unnecessary spending can overwhelm the discount.
PQP earning and checked bags
The card also lists card-based PQP earning and bonus PQP, plus checked-bag benefits. These features matter most to someone who is already pursuing United status and can use the qualifying-point rules. If you do not have a status target or do not fly enough United-operated segments for status to improve your travel, assign little or no value to PQP.
When Club’s lounge and status package can make sense
United Club membership
Club’s defining feature is United Club membership. Compare the card’s current annual fee with the number of visits you expect, the airports on your itineraries and whether you travel with guests. A membership has little value if your home airport lacks a participating lounge, your routes rarely provide access, or you would not otherwise pay for lounge entry.
Award pricing, bags and PQP
Chase lists cardmember award-pricing benefits, two checked bags, card-based PQP earning and 1,500 annual Card Bonus PQP. It also lists 11 total miles per dollar on eligible United flights when the miles from the MileagePlus member fare and the card purchase are combined. Confirm the current definitions of an eligible flight, the fare and the timing of each credit before assigning a dollar value.

Because the reviewed material did not establish Club’s current annual fee or membership price, calculate the fee comparison only after opening the live Pricing & Terms page. Do not infer Club’s cost from another card or from an older offer.

Occasional United flyer without status
Start with Explorer’s bag, boarding and pass benefits. If you can meet the spending requirement naturally and use at least one recurring benefit, its introductory fee structure may be attractive. Recalculate before the first renewal because the later annual fee is the relevant long-term test.
Frequent United flyer pursuing status
Quest or Club may fit better because their packages include PQP features and additional travel benefits. Compare the marginal value of those features with the higher fee, not with the entire value of the welcome bonus. Your status goal, expected United spend and award usage should drive the decision.

Club is the only card in this comparison whose central feature is United Club membership. Explorer’s two one-time passes are a different product: useful for occasional visits but not a substitute for frequent access. Count guest visits and airport coverage before choosing.
Fee-averse cardholder
Gateway is described by Chase as having no annual fee. If you cannot predict enough recurring value from a fee-based card, a no-fee option can reduce the risk of paying for unused benefits. Verify what current benefits and bonus, if any, accompany Gateway before applying.
A step-by-step worksheet for your decision
- Capture the offer. Save the application page and Pricing & Terms showing the date, bonus milestones, spending deadline, annual fee and eligibility language.
- Build a spending plan. List normal purchases expected during the qualification period. Exclude speculative spending and any purchase you would make only to chase miles.
- Test eligibility. Review current-card ownership and prior-bonus history against the disclosure. If uncertain, ask Chase before applying rather than relying on an online assumption.
- List trips for the next 12 months. Note United flights, companions, checked bags, lounge visits, hotel stays, rideshare purchases and car rentals that meet the stated conditions.
- Price realistic redemptions. Use current United award searches and comparable cash fares. Record taxes and fees with every example.
- Assign conservative benefit values. Count only credits and services you can use under their timing, enrollment, booking and payment rules.
- Subtract the fee for the correct year. Run a first-year result and a renewal-year result. Include the fee waiver only where the terms actually provide it.
- Stress-test the result. Recalculate with fewer flights, no lounge visits or a less favorable redemption. If the card is worthwhile only under an unusually expensive trip, it is not a dependable value.
- Set a renewal reminder. Review the fee, benefits and your next year’s travel before the renewal posts. A card can be valuable one year and unnecessary the next.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating the maximum bonus as automatic: the Explorer figure depends on separate spending and authorized-user conditions within a stated period.
- Ignoring the second-year fee: an introductory fee waiver does not make the card free permanently.
- Counting every credit at face value: credits can require enrollment, specific merchants, portals, minimum stays, qualifying tickets or delayed posting.
- Valuing miles from a fixed chart: the reviewed sources establish no universal cents-per-mile figure. Use your own likely awards.
- Forcing spend to earn a discount: a purchase requirement can erase the benefit if it creates interest or unnecessary consumption.
- Assuming status features matter to everyone: PQP is useful only if you pursue the relevant United status outcomes.
- Using an old fee or offer: card terms change. Recheck the official page on the day you apply.
- Forgetting opportunity cost: paying a fee for unused benefits can be worse than choosing a lower-fee card, even when the welcome miles are appealing.
How to reach a defensible verdict
Choose Explorer when its displayed bonus is attainable through normal spending and its bags, boarding, passes and credits match trips you already expect to take. Choose Quest only when its TravelBank credit, award discount and PQP features retain meaningful value after the fee and after you satisfy their conditions. Choose Club when frequent lounge access, checked bags, award pricing and status-related earning justify its current fee for your actual airports and travel volume. Consider Gateway when avoiding an annual fee is more important than premium benefits.
These are usage-based conclusions, not universal rankings. The same card can be profitable for a frequent United traveler and a poor purchase for someone who flies another airline, carries no bags or cannot redeem miles. Re-run the worksheet whenever the offer, fee, benefit terms or your travel pattern changes.
