Compare a semiconductor ETF with VOO in three layers: first identify each fund’s index and eligibility rules, then measure concentration from holdings dated the same day, and finally compare expense ratios using the issuer’s exact labels. A semiconductor fund and VOO are not interchangeable exposures. The comparison can show what each fund owns, how dependent it is on a few companies, and what its stated operating expenses are; it cannot by itself determine which fund belongs in your portfolio.
What this comparison is—and is not
VOO is the broad-market comparator in this question, while a semiconductor ETF is an industry-specific allocation. A broad-market fund is generally used to represent a wide slice of the U.S. equity market; a semiconductor ETF deliberately concentrates on companies classified in the semiconductor business. Therefore, “cheaper” or “more diversified” does not automatically mean “better.” The funds may serve different portfolio roles.

A useful comparison answers four separate questions:
- What index does each ETF track, and which companies are eligible?
- How much of the portfolio is in the largest holding and in the top five and top ten holdings?
- How many securities and what types of semiconductor businesses are actually held?
- What operating-expense figure does each issuer report, as of what date, and what costs are outside that figure?
Keep those questions separate. An index’s description tells you the design, but only a dated holdings file tells you the portfolio weights on a particular day.

Start with the index methodology
Index rules define the eligible universe before any weighting formula is applied. They are the best starting point for understanding why two semiconductor ETFs can own different companies or assign very different weights to the same company.
| ETF | Index and eligibility description | Weighting information established in the cited material |
|---|---|---|
| SOXX | The NYSE Semiconductor Index measures the 30 largest U.S.-listed companies classified in the semiconductors industry under the ICE Uniform Sector Classification schema. The July 31, 2026 summary prospectus states: “The Fund seeks to track the investment results of the NYSE Semiconductor Index (the “Underlying Index”), which measures the performance of the equity securities of the 30 largest U.S.-listed companies that are classified according to the ICE Uniform Sector Classification schema within the semiconductors industry.” | The cited prospectus describes the 30-company index but does not establish a current top-one, top-five, or top-ten portfolio percentage. Obtain the dated holdings file for those figures. |
| XSD | XSD tracks the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index, the semiconductor segment of the S&P Total Market Index. | The index uses a modified equal-weighted approach intended to spread exposure across large-, mid-, and small-cap stocks. Actual fund weights still have to be measured from a dated holdings list. |
| VOO | Use the current index description, prospectus, and holdings file on Vanguard’s official VOO profile. | Current VOO expense, holdings count, and concentration figures are not stated here because the profile’s text was not readable in the cited review. Do not substitute old figures or estimates; retrieve current issuer data. |
“Thirty largest U.S.-listed companies” is an eligibility rule, not a promise that every daily fund holding will have an identical weight or that the fund will show exactly 30 line items at every moment. Rebalancing, corporate actions, cash, sampling, and temporary portfolio activity can make the fund’s holdings file differ from the index’s simple constituent count.
Collect comparable, dated documents
Use a same-date snapshot whenever possible. Record the “as of” date in your spreadsheet; a publication date alone is not enough.
Recommended Free Tools
- Download the semiconductor ETF’s holdings file. Use the issuer’s downloadable portfolio data and retain the file name and as-of date.
- Download VOO’s holdings file. Start at Vanguard’s official profile and use the latest file that identifies the portfolio date.
- Open each fund’s current prospectus or summary prospectus. Confirm the index objective, expense-ratio definition, turnover disclosure, and risk language.
- Normalize security names. A company may appear with a different share class, ticker format, or cash line. Do not merge securities unless the issuer identifies them as the same position.
- Check the denominator. Verify whether weights are percentages of net assets and whether cash, futures, or other instruments are listed separately.
- Capture the retrieval date and portfolio date. Save both. Holdings and fees can change, and a later webpage can display an earlier portfolio snapshot.
- Compare only like-for-like figures. If SOXX data are dated October 8 and VOO data are dated September 30, label the mismatch prominently or obtain a common date.
The dated source examples illustrate why this matters. State Street’s XSD page reports 47 fund holdings as of October 8, 2026, while its factsheet reports 48 holdings as of June 30, 2026. Those are both valid snapshots, but they are not simultaneous observations and should not be combined into one “current” count.
Measure concentration from portfolio weights
A holdings list is not a concentration analysis. Calculate at least four values from the same dated weights:

- Largest position: the single highest portfolio weight.
- Top five: the sum of the five largest weights.
- Top ten: the sum of the ten largest weights.
- Remainder: 100% minus the top-ten total, after confirming that the file’s weights add to approximately 100%.
If the weights are in cells B2:B100 and sorted from largest to smallest, a spreadsheet implementation is straightforward:
- Largest position:
=MAX(B2:B100) - Top five:
=SUM(B2:B6) - Top ten:
=SUM(B2:B11) - Remainder:
=1-SUM(B2:B11)when weights are stored as decimals, or=100%-SUM(B2:B11)when stored as percentages.
For an unsorted file, sort a copy in descending order before summing. Keep the original file unchanged so your calculations remain auditable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the largest holding matters
The largest position shows the portfolio’s immediate single-company dependence. In a semiconductor fund, one manufacturer, equipment supplier, or designer can have a very different business cycle from the rest of the industry. A high largest-position weight means that company-specific earnings, regulation, product launches, or supply disruptions can dominate short-term results.
Why top-five and top-ten totals matter
Two funds can have the same number of holdings but very different exposure. A 40-stock portfolio with 60% in its top ten is economically concentrated; a 40-stock portfolio with roughly equal weights is distributed more broadly. Report the actual sums rather than inferring concentration from the holding count or index name.
Optional broader measures
If you want a single concentration statistic in addition to top-ten totals, calculate the Herfindahl-style sum of squared weights: HHI = SUM(weight^2) when weights are decimals. A higher result means more concentration. State your formula and date, because different providers use different scaling conventions. The top-one, top-five, and top-ten figures are easier for most readers to audit and should remain the primary presentation.

What the published SOXX and XSD figures show
SOXX’s stated universe and risk disclosures
The SOXX summary prospectus dated July 31, 2026 reports 0.33% total annual fund operating expenses and a 33% portfolio turnover rate for the most recent fiscal year reported. It also discusses concentration, non-diversification, and tracking-error risks. The 30-company index description tells you the intended universe, but you still need a dated SOXX holdings file to calculate the largest position and top-five and top-ten totals.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not treat the 33-company or 30-company description as a current fund holding count. Index constituents, portfolio implementation, cash, and corporate actions can produce different line-item counts on a holdings date.
XSD’s equal-weighting design and dated holdings
XSD’s official page describes a modified equal-weighted index and reports a 0.35% gross expense ratio and 47 fund holdings as of October 8, 2026. The June 30, 2026 factsheet reports 48 holdings and lists Intel at 2.75% in its top-ten table. The later 47-holding page snapshot and the earlier 48-holding factsheet should be cited with their respective dates, not blended.
Modified equal weighting can reduce the dominance of the largest companies compared with a traditional market-cap-weighted design, while allowing exposure to large-, mid-, and small-cap companies. It does not guarantee identical weights, zero concentration, or a permanently fixed holding count. Rebalancing and price movements change the weights between index reviews.
Compare expenses without mixing definitions
| Fund | Expense figure | Date and label | What you can and cannot infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOXX | 0.33% | Total annual fund operating expenses, SOXX summary prospectus dated July 31, 2026 | This is the reported operating-expense figure in that prospectus. Confirm the current prospectus before relying on it for a new investment. |
| XSD | 0.35% | Gross expense ratio on the official page accessed October 9, 2026; the June 30, 2026 factsheet also reports 0.35% gross | “Gross” identifies the ratio before any contractual waivers or reimbursements. Check whether a net ratio is also disclosed and whether a waiver has an expiration date. |
| VOO | Not stated in the cited material | Retrieve the current Vanguard prospectus and profile | Do not calculate how much more or less a semiconductor ETF costs than VOO until the VOO ratio is taken from a current issuer document with a date. |
For a rough dollar translation, multiply the annual ratio by the amount invested: 0.33% is approximately $33 per year on $10,000, and 0.35% is approximately $35 per year on $10,000, before compounding, trading effects, and changes in asset value. These are arithmetic illustrations of the stated ratios, not a prediction of the amount deducted from your account on a particular day.

Operating expenses are not the complete cost of ownership. Brokerage commissions, bid-ask spreads, market impact, and the trading costs embedded in portfolio turnover may sit outside the reported expense ratio. SOXX’s 33% turnover disclosure is a reminder that portfolio trading can matter even when two funds’ headline ratios look close. A lower ratio does not guarantee a lower total investor cost if execution, spreads, or tracking differences are materially worse.
Make the VOO comparison fairly
Before writing a numerical sentence such as “the semiconductor ETF costs more than VOO,” obtain three current VOO items from Vanguard:
- the expense ratio and its exact label (for example, gross, net, or total annual fund operating expenses);
- the holdings file with an explicit portfolio date; and
- the prospectus section describing the fund’s benchmark, diversification, and principal risks.
Then create a comparison row for each fund using the same fields: benchmark, eligibility, holdings count, largest position, top-five weight, top-ten weight, remainder, expense-ratio label, expense-ratio date, and portfolio date. If the dates differ, show both dates in the table and explain why. Never present an old VOO ratio beside a current semiconductor-fund ratio as though they were measured simultaneously.
For the cost difference, use the same denominator and labels. If both figures are comparable annual operating-expense ratios, subtract the lower from the higher and express the result in percentage points. If one figure is gross and the other is net, do not subtract them without explaining the waiver or reimbursement difference. A 0.10-percentage-point difference is $10 per $10,000 per year before asset-value changes; it is not a complete estimate of realized trading cost.
Interpret the different portfolio roles
When a semiconductor ETF is a targeted allocation
A semiconductor ETF can be used when you intentionally want industry exposure and accept that its performance may diverge sharply from the broad market. Its holdings may include chip designers, manufacturers, equipment makers, and other companies classified by the index provider’s rules. Read the index methodology to understand what “semiconductor” includes; do not assume every holding has the same revenue mix or sensitivity to the chip cycle.

When VOO is the broad-market reference
VOO is useful here as a reference point for broad-market exposure, not as a substitute benchmark for a semiconductor index. Its current holdings and concentration should be measured from Vanguard’s files, just as the semiconductor fund’s are measured from its issuer. A broad-market fund can still have large positions in major technology companies, so “broad market” does not mean every sector or company has an equal weight.
Why the comparison alone is not a recommendation
Choosing between targeted and broad exposure depends on your existing holdings, time horizon, risk capacity, tax situation, and reason for owning the fund. A concentrated sector position can increase the effect of one industry cycle; a broad-market fund can dilute a specific industry bet. The facts establish exposures and costs, not suitability.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using the index name as a concentration measure. Correction: calculate top-one, top-five, and top-ten weights from the dated portfolio.
- Equating the index constituent count with fund holdings. Correction: report the fund’s holdings-file count and separately describe the index universe.
- Combining XSD’s 47 holdings from October 8, 2026 with its 48 holdings from June 30, 2026. Correction: label each snapshot or use one common date.
- Calling a gross ratio “the investor’s total cost.” Correction: identify gross versus net and discuss brokerage and trading costs separately.
- Comparing a current semiconductor ratio with an undated VOO number. Correction: retrieve VOO’s current prospectus and holdings file before calculating a difference.
- Assuming equal weighting means no concentration. Correction: inspect actual weights after rebalancing and price movements.
- Ignoring index classification rules. Correction: read the methodology and note whether eligibility is based on U.S. listing, industry classification, market capitalization, or another rule.
- Relying on a webpage without saving its “as of” date. Correction: record the portfolio date, publication date, and retrieval date in your worksheet.
A reusable worksheet
Use one row per fund and preserve the source URL beside every figure:

| Turnover | 33% for the most recent fiscal year reported in the July 31, 2026 prospectus | Not stated in the cited material | Copy current prospectus figure |
Attach the relevant source to each cell rather than citing one general webpage for an entire row. This prevents a later update to one metric from silently making the rest of the table appear current.
Bottom line for the comparison
Use index rules to explain what each ETF is designed to own, use same-date holdings to quantify concentration, and use identically defined expense ratios to compare stated operating costs. The available dated figures show SOXX at 0.33% total annual fund operating expenses in its July 31, 2026 prospectus and XSD at 0.35% gross in State Street materials, with XSD reporting 47 holdings on October 8, 2026 and 48 on June 30, 2026. A valid numerical comparison with VOO still requires current Vanguard holdings and prospectus data. Until those are collected on a comparable basis, any claim about VOO’s exact cost, holdings count, or concentration would be unsupported.
