How to Compare a Salary-Linked Mutual Fund Plan With a SIP You Set Up Yourself (India)

Compare the investment, not the payment label. A salary-linked mutual fund arrangement describes how money is collected—usually a payroll deduction—while a self-set SIP is an instruction you create and manage yourself. Neither route, by itself, tells you whether the money buys a direct or regular plan, what the expense ratio is, whether advice is included, or how the investment behaves when you change jobs. For an India-focused comparison, identify the exact AMC, scheme and plan option first, then compare cost, control, continuity, liquidity and tax treatment under the scheme documents currently in force.

The framework below separates a payroll facility from the direct-versus-regular distinction, explains what a documented employee facility actually promises, and gives you a decision process that does not assume every employer plan works the same way.

What “salary-linked mutual fund plan” actually means

The phrase can describe two different things:

  • A contribution route: your employer’s payroll system deducts an amount from salary and sends it for investment.
  • A named mutual-fund plan or facility: a scheme or employer arrangement with its own eligibility, minimums, processing dates and redemption rules.

Do not treat payroll deduction as a fund category. The deduction method does not automatically make an investment a direct plan, reduce its expense ratio, provide advice or create a tax deduction. Those outcomes depend on the exact scheme, plan option, intermediary and applicable law.

What one documented employee facility says

Sundaram Mutual Fund’s scheme document describes an Employee Savings Plan for corporate employees. Under that facility, an employee states the investment amount and duration, instructs the human-resources department to deduct the amount monthly or quarterly, and may seek redemption independently. The periodic contribution must meet the relevant scheme’s SIP minimum, and the document sets out the facility’s processing terms. These are terms of that cited facility, not universal rules for every employer payroll arrangement. Read the current document for the scheme you are considering: Sundaram Mutual Fund scheme document.

What is known about a proposed payroll facility

A Financial Express report dated May 20, 2026 described a Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) draft consultation that would address employer deductions for employees who opt in to investments in schemes of their choice, within proposed third-party-payment provisions. The report gave June 10 as the comment deadline. It does not establish that the proposal became a final rule or that a generally available facility now exists. Confirm the current regulatory position and your employer’s implementation before relying on it: Financial Express report, May 20, 2026.

Direct and regular plans: the distinction that payroll does not answer

SEBI says direct-plan investors purchase from the asset management company (AMC) without intermediaries and are responsible for their own research and transactions. A regular plan is purchased through an intermediary that may provide advice and paperwork support; its expense ratio includes intermediary commission. AMFI describes direct and regular versions as having the same scheme portfolio and fund manager but different expense ratios. Read the official explanations at SEBI’s regular and direct mutual-fund guide and AMFI’s direct-plan information.

Question Direct plan Regular plan
How it is bought Directly from the AMC, without an intermediary, according to SEBI. Through an intermediary.
Who handles research and transactions The investor. The intermediary may provide advice and paperwork support.
Underlying portfolio and fund manager Can be the same as the corresponding regular plan. Can be the same as the corresponding direct plan.
Expense ratio Generally does not include the intermediary commission charged through a regular plan; check the current scheme disclosure. Includes intermediary commission; check the current scheme disclosure.
What “salary-linked” tells you Nothing by itself. Verify the plan name shown on the application, account statement and scheme documents.

Never infer “direct” from labels such as salary SIP, payroll SIP or employee savings plan. Ask for the complete scheme name, plan (direct or regular), option (for example, growth or income-distribution option where applicable), folio details and current expense ratio.

The comparison checklist

Use the same scheme and investment option wherever possible. Comparing a payroll investment in one scheme with a self-set SIP in a different scheme confuses payment convenience with investment choice.

Dimension What to establish Why it changes the decision
Identity AMC, scheme name, direct or regular plan, option and folio/account holder. A similar-sounding name can represent a different portfolio, cost structure or eligibility rule.
Cost Current expense ratio for the exact plan, plus any scheme-specific transaction charges or exit load disclosed in the documents. A payroll route is not automatically cheaper. Direct and regular versions can have different ongoing costs.
Advice and administration Whether payroll only transmits your contribution or an intermediary also advises, services and processes paperwork. Advice and administration can be valuable, but they are not free; the regular-plan expense ratio includes intermediary commission.
Control Who can select the scheme, change the amount, pause or stop deductions, and change bank or folio details? Convenience is less useful if changes require a long employer process or miss a cut-off.
Employment changes What happens after resignation, transfer, unpaid leave, payroll failure or a change in employer? Employment-linked deductions may stop even though your mutual-fund holding remains. The exact portability and termination rules must be confirmed.
Redemption How to redeem, who receives the request, processing timelines, exit load and any lock-in. Payroll collection does not establish liquidity. Scheme rules govern access to your money.
Tax Whether the investment qualifies under a particular provision and how the applicable law treats your situation. Payroll processing is not automatically a tax deduction and is not equivalent to EPF or NPS.

Step-by-step: compare the two routes before investing

1. Obtain the documents and account labels

Request the employer’s payroll-facility terms, the AMC’s current scheme information document and the application or transaction confirmation. Record the exact AMC, scheme, plan, option, minimum contribution, deduction frequency, cut-off times and the account in which units will be held. For a self-set SIP, keep the same information from the AMC or transaction platform you use. If the payroll form does not state direct or regular, treat the plan type as unknown until the AMC confirms it in writing.

2. Match the investment exposure

Confirm that both routes invest in the same scheme and option before comparing convenience or cost. A direct and regular version may share a portfolio and fund manager, but two different schemes can have entirely different holdings and risk. Compare the scheme’s stated objective, asset allocation, risk disclosures and any lock-in separately from the collection method.

3. Compare the current expense ratio

Use the latest disclosure for the exact plan rather than a generic internet example. Note the date and whether the figure is the current total expense ratio or another historical figure. Direct and regular plans can carry different expense ratios because the regular plan includes intermediary commission. A small annual percentage difference compounds over time, but the actual rupee impact depends on your balance, contribution pattern and holding period; do not substitute an illustrative SEBI example for your own calculation. Verify the current figure in the scheme’s official documents and the account or transaction confirmation.

4. Separate advice from payment processing

Ask the employer or intermediary which service is actually being provided:

  • Is payroll merely remitting an amount you selected?
  • Who recommends the scheme and plan?
  • Who answers questions about transactions, nominees and statements?
  • Who corrects a failed deduction or an incorrect amount?
  • Is an intermediary listed on the application or statement?

Under SEBI’s description, a direct investor performs research and transactions, whereas a regular-plan intermediary may provide advice and paperwork support. If the payroll team only transmits money, do not assume you are receiving investment advice.

5. Test control over the contribution

Get written answers to the operational questions that matter in real life:

  • How many business days before payroll close must you request a change?
  • Can you increase, reduce, pause or stop the deduction without leaving the scheme?
  • Can you switch schemes or plans, or must you submit a new form?
  • What happens when a deduction is missed because salary is insufficient or payroll fails?
  • Which date is treated as the contribution date for processing?

With a self-set SIP, you normally submit these instructions through the AMC or transaction channel you selected, subject to its authentication and cut-off rules. The relevant comparison is not “automatic versus manual”; it is whether each route gives you the control you need and a reliable record of every instruction.

6. Map the employment-exit process

Ask HR and the AMC what happens when you resign, retire, move to another payroll, take unpaid leave or change the bank account used for deductions. Determine whether future deductions stop automatically, whether you must cancel a mandate, and whether your existing units remain in your folio. Do not assume that changing jobs forces a sale or, conversely, that payroll deductions will continue at a new employer. The cited Sundaram facility allows independent redemption, but it does not establish universal portability or termination rules.

7. Verify redemption and restrictions

Find the exact redemption route and the person or institution authorized to submit it. Check whether the scheme has an exit load, a lock-in, minimum redemption amount or other restriction. A payroll method does not create or remove these conditions. If you need emergency access to the money, confirm the scheme’s liquidity before starting contributions rather than relying on the convenience of salary deduction.

8. Check tax treatment separately

The Income Tax Department lists Equity-Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS) among Section 80C investments and sets out separate conditions for deductions related to the National Pension System (NPS). That does not make an ordinary payroll mutual-fund contribution an automatic deduction, nor does it make a mutual fund equivalent to EPF or NPS. Tax treatment depends on the investment type, the law applicable to the relevant assessment year and your personal circumstances. Use the department’s guidance and, where needed, a qualified tax professional: Income Tax Department guidance for salaried employees.

How to evaluate a self-set SIP

A self-set SIP gives you responsibility for the decisions that a payroll facility may obscure. Before activating it, create a written investment instruction containing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The exact AMC, scheme, plan (direct or regular) and option.
  2. The monthly or other periodic amount and the date on which the debit should occur.
  3. The bank account or payment mandate and the process for changing it.
  4. The purpose, time horizon and circumstances in which you will pause, increase or stop contributions.
  5. The location of statements, transaction confirmations, nominee details and redemption instructions.

Then verify each debit and the units credited after the first transaction. Keep records of the plan name and expense ratio at the time you invest; costs and scheme terms can change, so review current disclosures rather than relying on an old screenshot or employer form. A self-set SIP is not “set and forget” if you have not arranged a process for reviewing documents, updating nominees and handling a failed debit.

ELSS requires a separate lock-in analysis

If either route invests in an Equity-Linked Savings Scheme, evaluate the ELSS itself—not the way contributions are collected. SEBI describes ELSS as an equity-oriented scheme with a three-year lock-in, SIP and lump-sum contribution modes, market-linked returns and no guarantee of returns: SEBI’s ELSS guide.

The lock-in applies to each ELSS instalment’s units according to the scheme rules; setting up a SIP does not make the money freely redeemable before the applicable period. Check the scheme’s current documents for redemption mechanics and tax conditions. If you may need the money sooner, a payroll deduction’s regularity does not solve the lock-in problem.

Questions to put to HR, the AMC or an intermediary

  • What is the complete scheme and plan name, and is it direct or regular?
  • Is the employer only transmitting my instruction, or is an intermediary involved?
  • What is the current expense ratio for this exact plan, and where is it disclosed?
  • What is the minimum periodic contribution and the payroll cut-off date?
  • Can I change, pause or cancel the deduction? How much notice is required?
  • What happens after resignation, retirement, unpaid leave or payroll failure?
  • How do I redeem, and do exit loads or lock-ins apply?
  • Will the units remain in my folio if salary deductions stop?
  • Which tax provision, if any, applies to this specific investment?
  • Who receives complaints about a missed deduction, incorrect amount or delayed statement?

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming payroll means direct

Problem: The deduction is described as low-cost or employee-friendly, so you assume it is a direct plan. Correction: Confirm the plan label and current expense ratio on the AMC record and statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing different schemes

Problem: You compare a payroll equity fund with a self-set debt or hybrid fund and attribute the outcome to payment method. Correction: Match the scheme and option first; assess risk and asset allocation independently.

Treating convenience as advice

Problem: HR collects a form, so you assume someone has assessed suitability. Correction: Ask who provides regulated advice, who selects the scheme and who is responsible for transaction support.

Ignoring job changes

Problem: You budget around an automatic deduction without knowing how to stop it or what happens at exit. Correction: Obtain the written resignation, leave and failed-payroll procedures before enrolling.

Calling every payroll investment tax-saving

Problem: Salary deduction is treated as proof of a Section 80C benefit or as an EPF/NPS contribution. Correction: Identify the exact investment and verify the applicable tax rule for your assessment year.

Assuming a SIP removes ELSS restrictions

Problem: Regular instalments are mistaken for regular liquidity. Correction: Track the three-year ELSS lock-in for the units purchased through each instalment and plan cash needs accordingly.

Choosing between the routes

A salary-linked facility may suit you when the employer’s process is reliable, the scheme and plan are clearly identified, the deduction amount is easy to change, and the administrative convenience is worth any additional cost or intermediary involvement. A self-set SIP may suit you when you want direct control over scheme selection, plan type, contribution timing, records and changes, and you are prepared to perform the research and transactions yourself.

The deciding test is five-part: same investment exposure, verified plan type, current cost, workable control and acceptable continuity. If any one of those remains unknown—especially whether the payroll route is direct or regular—pause enrollment and obtain the missing document. Recheck expense ratios, payroll terms, tax rules and redemption conditions before investing because each can change.

This comparison is India-focused, using SEBI, AMFI, Indian tax guidance and an India-specific employee-facility example. Rules and facilities in another jurisdiction may use different definitions and tax treatment.
