Compare a mutual fund NFO in three layers: first test whether its benchmark matches the mandate, then separate the portfolio rules from the holdings that will eventually be disclosed, and finally compare the current expenses and dealing terms for the exact plan you would buy. An NFO’s ₹10 offer price is only a launch unit price—not a discount—and a new scheme has no live performance record on which to judge investment skill.

What you can—and cannot—know at launch

A New Fund Offer (NFO) is the first subscription offering for a new mutual fund scheme. In India, units are typically offered at ₹10 during the initial offer. Once the NFO closes, investors transact at the scheme’s prevailing net asset value (NAV). The launch price therefore tells you nothing about whether the underlying assets are cheap, expensive or attractively valued.

At launch, the most reliable evidence is documentary. The scheme’s latest Scheme Information Document (SID), its addenda, and the current expense and portfolio disclosures published by the asset management company (AMC) explain what the scheme is allowed to do. They do not prove how well the manager will execute. A new scheme may have no operating history, no disclosed holdings and no performance record.

  • Established before launch: the objective, category, eligible instruments, allocation ranges, restrictions, benchmark methodology, plan structure and stated charges.
  • Not established before launch: realized portfolio weights, turnover, tracking or implementation quality, and investment performance.
  • Time-sensitive: expense ratios, portfolio holdings, exit-load terms and other dealing details can change or become available after launch.

Your comparison should therefore be a repeatable document review rather than a prediction based on the NFO price or marketing name.

Collect the current documents first

Use the scheme’s own latest disclosures, not an old factsheet or a summary copied into an application form. SEBI maintains a repository of mutual-fund SIDs. Locate the particular scheme and read the newest SID together with every applicable addendum. Then check the AMC’s current expense disclosure and portfolio reporting, and use relevant AMFI pages where the scheme directs investors for regulatory or portfolio information.

  1. Confirm the exact scheme and plan. Record the scheme name, option (growth or income distribution, where offered), Direct or Regular plan, and the date of the document you are reading.
  2. Read the investment objective and strategy together. The objective states the intended exposure; the strategy and permitted-investment sections show how much discretion the manager has to pursue it.
  3. Find the benchmark section. Note the exact index name, any blended components and their weights, and whether the benchmark is described as reflecting the intended asset allocation.
  4. Capture the allocation and restriction tables. Record minimum and maximum ranges, concentration limits, instrument types, derivatives permissions, foreign exposure and any liquidity, lock-in or exit-load provisions.
  5. Check current costs separately. The SID may state a ceiling or estimate. Confirm the live plan-level expense ratio and other charges on the AMC’s current disclosure.
  6. After launch, replace assumptions with evidence. Review the monthly portfolio spreadsheet, subsequent SIDs or addenda, NAV history and performance disclosures as they become available.

Keep the document date beside every number. A fee or holding quoted without a date and plan can be misleading even when the number itself was once accurate.

Test whether the benchmark fits the mandate

A benchmark is a comparison reference, not a return promise. The correct question is not whether its name sounds familiar, but whether it represents the exposures the scheme says it will hold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the benchmark to the investable universe

Compare the benchmark with five parts of the mandate:

  • Asset classes: equity, fixed income, commodities, cash or other permitted assets.
  • Market segment: country, geography, market-cap range, sector or credit-market segment.
  • Risk characteristics: credit quality, duration, currency and interest-rate sensitivity for debt; volatility and concentration for equity.
  • Strategy: broad market exposure, factor selection, thematic investing, tactical allocation or another stated approach.
  • Target mix: whether the benchmark weights resemble the allocation the scheme intends to maintain over time.

A single broad equity index can be a poor reference for a scheme that may hold substantial debt or commodity exposure. Conversely, a complicated blended benchmark may be unnecessary when the mandate is simply to replicate one index.

Example of a weighted multi-asset benchmark

A 2026 Scheme Information Document for the AlphaGrep Multi Asset Allocation Fund gives a specific illustration: The Scheme benchmark will be 35% NIFTY 200 TRI + 45% NIFTY Composite Debt Index + 20% MCX iCOMDEX Composite Index. The same document says, The composition of the benchmark is in line with the intended asset allocation of the fund across the asset class in which the scheme intends to participate over a period of time.

Benchmark component in the example SID Weight What the component represents in the stated comparison
NIFTY 200 TRI 35% Equity exposure represented by a total-return index
NIFTY Composite Debt Index 45% Fixed-income exposure
MCX iCOMDEX Composite Index 20% Commodity exposure

Those are benchmark weights for that particular SID, not a market-wide template, a forecast or performance statistics. When comparing another NFO, reproduce its own components and weights rather than borrowing this mix.

Check how a passive scheme can differ from its index

For an index fund, the stated aim is to mirror the composition of a specific index. The fund can still underperform or differ from that index because expenses and operational inefficiencies reduce returns. Compare the fund with the same underlying index and examine tracking difference once live data exists. Do not treat a benchmark match in the SID as proof that the portfolio will replicate the index precisely.

Red flags in benchmark selection

  • The benchmark omits a material asset class that the scheme can hold.
  • The benchmark covers a different market-cap, credit, duration or geographic segment from the stated strategy.
  • A multi-asset scheme uses a single equity index without explaining how debt or commodities are represented.
  • The benchmark is described only by a broad label, with no index version or component weights.
  • The scheme’s permitted ranges are so wide that the benchmark reflects one allocation while the portfolio could operate at another.

These issues do not automatically make an NFO unsuitable. They do mean that benchmark returns may be a weak yardstick for judging the scheme.

Read portfolio rules before there are holdings

Before launch, translate every “may invest” clause into a possible exposure. A permission is not a promise that the manager will use it, but it defines the risks you are accepting.

Map the allocation range

Write down the minimum and maximum percentage for each asset class and instrument group. A wide range can allow tactical positioning but also means the portfolio may differ materially from the headline category or benchmark at a given time. Compare the permitted mix with your existing funds so that an apparently new exposure does not simply duplicate risks you already own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check concentration and diversification rules

Look for limits on a single issuer, group, sector, security, fund or related instrument. Note exceptions for government securities, index constituents or other categories if the SID provides them. Concentration limits tell you how much damage one issuer or theme could cause; they also show whether the portfolio can become more concentrated than its name suggests.

Assess debt credit and duration flexibility

For fixed income, identify permitted credit ratings, unrated or structured instruments, maturity bands and duration limits. Credit flexibility determines default and downgrade exposure. Duration flexibility determines sensitivity to interest-rate changes. A debt allocation is not fully described by its percentage alone.

Understand derivatives and leverage-related permissions

Read whether derivatives may be used for hedging, efficient portfolio management or taking exposure, and whether the scheme can use futures, options, swaps or other instruments named in the SID. Derivative permission can change the portfolio’s sensitivity, liquidity needs and implementation risk even when the cash allocation looks simple.

Check liquidity, foreign exposure and dealing terms

Record any foreign-investment allowance, minimum liquid assets, restrictions on illiquid securities, redemption gates, lock-in or exit-load provisions. These terms affect how readily you can access your money and how the scheme may respond in stressed markets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate the mandate from actual holdings

A mandate describes what the manager is allowed to buy. A portfolio disclosure shows what the scheme actually bought. Do not infer launch-day holdings from the objective or from an NFO presentation. After launch, check the AMC’s monthly portfolio disclosure; SEBI’s example describes this information being made available through the AMC and AMFI websites in a downloadable spreadsheet. Treat the first disclosed portfolio as evidence to analyse, not as a guarantee of future positioning.

Worked example: a new multi-asset scheme

The AlphaGrep Multi Asset Allocation Fund SID illustrates how a document can describe systematic allocation across equity, fixed-income and commodity instruments, along with strategy, derivative use and risk disclosures. It also states that performance is not applicable because the scheme is new and that portfolio-holding disclosure is not yet applicable at that stage. The example is useful for learning where to look; its permissions and terms do not generalize to other funds.

Compare the current cost of the exact plan

What TER includes

AMFI describes the total expense ratio (TER) as operating costs expressed relative to average NAV. The costs can include investment management, registrar, custodian, audit, administration, marketing and transaction expenses. Daily NAV is disclosed after expenses are deducted, so TER reduces the return investors receive without appearing as a separate bill.

Compare the current figure applicable to your plan, not only the maximum stated in an SID. Identify the date, plan, option and whether the disclosure is a ceiling, an estimate or the rate currently being charged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct versus Regular plans

Plan Cost feature to verify Comparison implication
Direct Distribution expenses and commission are excluded under the stated plan structure The expense ratio is generally lower than the corresponding Regular Plan for the same scheme, subject to the current disclosure
Regular Distribution-related expenses and commission can be included in the plan’s operating costs Compare the live Regular Plan TER with the service or advice arrangement you are choosing

The AlphaGrep example states: The Direct Plan under the Scheme shall have a lower expense ratio than Regular Plan, excluding distribution expenses, commission, etc., and no commission shall be paid from Direct Plan. That is the wording for that scheme’s stated terms, not a quotation for every mutual fund.

Do not confuse an SID estimate with a current charge

The same example SID estimates a maximum Base Expense Ratio (BER) of up to 1.85% for its Regular Plan and says investors should consult the AMC website for actual current expenses. The 1.85% figure is an example-specific estimate, not a market-wide rate and not evidence of what another scheme charges. If a new SID presents a maximum BER or expense ceiling, use it to understand the possible cost, then replace it with the current plan-level disclosure when available.

Include charges beyond TER

Read the current document for statutory levies, transaction costs, exit load and any other dealing terms. A low TER does not make a fund inexpensive for a short holding period if an exit load applies. Conversely, a higher TER may be less important than a mismatch between the scheme’s risk and your objective. Record each charge with its trigger and time period rather than comparing one headline percentage.

Understand NFO expenses

The AlphaGrep example says its NFO expenses are borne by the AMC rather than the scheme. That treatment is specific to the example document. Confirm the applicable terms and regulations for the scheme and date you are evaluating instead of assuming every NFO handles launch expenses identically.

Why ₹10 does not mean “cheap”

Two funds can each launch at ₹10 while owning entirely different assets, carrying different expenses and facing different risks. The unit count changes when you invest, but your economic exposure is determined by the NAV and the value of the underlying portfolio, not by the number printed on the application form.

After the NFO closes, units are bought or redeemed at prevailing NAV, subject to the scheme’s dealing rules. Evaluate the objective, benchmark, portfolio permissions, manager information, costs and liquidity instead of choosing a fund because its launch price appears lower than another fund’s NAV.

Handle the absence of a track record correctly

A new scheme generally cannot demonstrate live performance at launch. The cited example SID explicitly says performance is not applicable because the scheme has no track record. That absence is not a temporary underperformance figure; it is a lack of operating history.

At launch, compare the documented mandate, benchmark fit, portfolio rules, manager information and costs. Do not substitute back-tested, simulated or benchmark returns for a scheme track record unless the material clearly labels them and explains the methodology. Once the fund has live data, review returns against the correct benchmark, the portfolio’s risk exposures and the length of the period covered.

SEBI’s October 22, 2018 circular is titled “Total Expense Ratio (TER) and Performance Disclosure for Mutual Funds.” It confirms that TER and performance disclosure are regulatory disclosure subjects, but it should not be treated as a complete statement of every current requirement. For current rules, rely on the latest applicable SEBI regulations and circulars referenced in the scheme’s disclosures.

Use a side-by-side comparison worksheet

When evaluating two or more NFOs, fill the same fields for each scheme. The following questions keep the comparison focused on evidence rather than sales language.

Comparison axis Record from each scheme Decision question
Mandate and category Objective, scheme type, eligible assets, allocation ranges and concentration constraints Does the scheme provide the exposure I actually want?
Benchmark fit Index name, blended components, weights, asset class and market segment represented Does the benchmark reflect the mandate and intended allocation?
Portfolio implementation Strategy, diversification, credit and duration flexibility, derivatives, turnover-related discretion and liquidity terms What risks can the scheme take, and what holdings will show how it uses that freedom?
Evidence and track record Whether the scheme is new, available portfolio disclosures and the length of any performance history Am I assessing documented live evidence or only a stated strategy?
Costs and dealing terms Current plan-level TER or BER where applicable, levies, transaction costs, exit load and lock-in or liquidity terms What will I pay for my chosen plan and holding period?

Mark every entry with its source date. If a number is only an estimate or maximum, label it that way. If a field cannot yet be known because the scheme has not launched, leave it as an evidence gap rather than filling it with a guess.

Recheck the scheme after launch

Launch analysis is only the first review. Set a reminder to revisit the scheme when its first portfolio disclosure and current expense information are available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Compare actual weights with the stated range. Note whether the portfolio is near a boundary or materially different from the allocation implied by the benchmark.
  2. Inspect security-level exposures. Look for issuer, sector, credit, duration, commodity and foreign exposures that overlap with your existing investments.
  3. Reconcile the benchmark. For a passive fund, monitor tracking difference against the same index. For an active or multi-asset fund, assess whether the benchmark remains a fair reference for the risks actually taken.
  4. Verify the live TER. Check the exact plan and date, and note changes rather than relying on the launch estimate.
  5. Wait for meaningful live history. Review performance only after there is a period long enough to understand the strategy and the market conditions in which it operated.

Common comparison mistakes and their fixes

Mistake: choosing the lowest-looking NAV

Fix: Treat ₹10 as a typical initial offer price, then compare the mandate, benchmark, holdings, risks and costs.

Mistake: treating a benchmark name as proof of suitability

Fix: Match every benchmark component with the scheme’s asset classes, market segments and intended allocation.

Mistake: reading “may invest” as “will invest”

Fix: Record the full range of possible exposures, then verify actual holdings after launch.

Mistake: comparing one plan’s TER with another plan’s headline figure

Fix: Compare Direct with Direct or Regular with Regular, using the current disclosure and including applicable levies and dealing costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: using a back-test as a performance record

Fix: Label simulations separately and wait for disclosed live performance before judging execution.

Mistake: assuming an example SID applies to every NFO

Fix: Use worked examples only to learn how to read a document; verify each scheme’s own benchmark, permissions, expenses and portfolio reports.

A practical decision rule

An NFO deserves further consideration only when all three tests pass: the benchmark is a fair reference for the stated mandate, the portfolio rules fit the risks and exposure you intend to own, and the current cost and dealing terms are acceptable for your plan and holding period. If any test fails—or cannot yet be verified—treat that as a reason to wait for better evidence, not as a reason to rely on the ₹10 launch price or a projected return.
