If the bank has transferred an eligible balance to the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund, the bank verifies your claim, pays you the amount due (with applicable interest where the deposit is interest-bearing), and then seeks reimbursement from the fund.
Use RBI’s UDGAM portal to locate a forgotten deposit and see the relevant bank’s instructions. UDGAM is a free search service, not a payment or claim-settlement service. The practical route is: search, identify the bank, obtain its current checklist, submit the claim to that bank, and keep proof of every step.

What happens when a bank transfers a deposit to the DEA Fund?
Under the RBI’s Depositor Education and Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014, a covered balance is transferred after it has remained continuously inoperative or unclaimed for ten years. The transfer does not cancel the depositor’s right to recover the money. The depositor can still claim through the bank that held the account; if the depositor has died, a legally entitled heir can make the claim.

RBI’s Frequently Asked Questions on Depositor Education and Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014, dated March 5, 2024, says that eligible amounts are transferred on the last working day of the month after they complete ten years of continuous inoperative or unclaimed status. For example, an amount completing ten years in April is transferred on the last working day of May. Accrued interest is included when the amount is transferred.

A transfer is therefore an accounting step between the bank and the DEA Fund, not a forfeiture. The bank remains the customer-facing institution. It checks identity, ownership, nomination or succession authority, and any account-specific issue, then repays the claimant and seeks an equivalent reimbursement from the fund.
The scheme does not prescribe a specific time limit for a customer’s claim. RBI nevertheless encourages depositors and heirs to claim as soon as they become aware of the balance. Waiting does not create a new deadline, but old records, name changes, closed branches, and succession disputes can make verification more complicated.
How do I find an unclaimed bank deposit?
Search with RBI’s UDGAM portal
UDGAM is RBI’s centralized search portal for unclaimed deposits held by participating banks. You create an account with your name and mobile number, then search using the account-holder details. A result can identify the bank and provide information about that bank’s claim process.
Recommended Free Tools
For an individual, the search requires the account-holder’s name and the bank, plus one or more of the following identifiers:
- Permanent Account Number (PAN)
- Driving licence number
- Voter identity card number
- Passport number
- Date of birth
RBI says an address may be used when none of those listed identifiers is available. Try the name as it appeared in the bank’s records, including relevant initials or spelling variations, because a mismatch can prevent a match even when the account exists.
For an entity, the search uses the entity name and bank, plus relevant details such as the authorised signatory’s name, PAN, Corporate Identity Number (CIN), or date of incorporation. Keep the entity’s authority records available for the later bank claim; a search match alone does not prove that the person conducting the search may receive the money.
Understand what a UDGAM result means
A result indicates that the bank has a matching unclaimed-deposit record; it is not an approval of your claim and does not trigger payment. RBI’s UDGAM FAQ states: “The unclaimed deposits can be claimed only from the respective bank.” Follow the bank-specific instructions shown in the result and contact that bank to begin verification.

The result may include a UDRN (Unclaimed Deposit Reference Number). The bank generates this reference for an account transferred to the fund. It is designed so that an outside person cannot identify the account holder or branch from the number alone. Keep the UDRN with your records, but do not treat it as a payment reference issued by RBI or as evidence that the bank has accepted your claim.
UDGAM does not search every bank automatically
RBI reported that 30 banks were participating in UDGAM and represented around 90% of DEA Fund unclaimed deposits by value as of March 4, 2024. Those are dated statistics, not a guarantee of current coverage. Check the portal’s current participating-bank list. If the bank that held the account is not listed, contact that bank directly using its official service channels and account records. Search results are limited to data supplied by participating banks, so no result does not conclusively prove that no unclaimed balance exists anywhere.
How to file the claim with the bank
Once you identify the bank, the following sequence keeps the claim moving without confusing the search process with settlement.
- Save the search details. Record the bank name, UDRN or other result reference, account-holder name, and any instructions displayed by UDGAM. Download or print the result if the portal permits it. Note the date of the search and the participating-bank status shown at that time.
- Obtain the bank’s current checklist. Use the claim instructions in the UDGAM result or the bank’s own website, then contact the branch, call centre, or other channel identified by the bank. Ask for the current claim form and the exact evidence required for your account and claimant status. Ask whether documents must be self-attested, originals, notarised copies, or submitted through a particular branch or digital channel.
- Confirm who is entitled to claim. A living depositor normally claims in their own name. A nominee, survivor, legal heir, executor, or other representative may need to establish authority under the account’s terms and applicable succession rules. The bank—not a generic internet checklist—determines which route applies.
- Submit the requested documents and form. Provide the identity, account, authority, and succession evidence the bank specifies. Requirements vary by bank, account type, nomination or survivorship instructions, and whether the depositor is alive. Do not assume that a document list for one bank or account applies everywhere.
- Request an acknowledgement. Ask for a stamped receipt, electronic acknowledgement, complaint number, or other case reference showing what was submitted and when. Retain copies of every form and document, including the UDRN and any covering letter.
- Respond to verification requests. The bank may need to update KYC, confirm ownership, resolve a name mismatch, or establish the claimant’s authority. Reply through the bank’s designated channel and keep a record of each communication. If the bank says the account is not in its current system, provide old statements, passbook entries, deposit receipts, or other records and ask which office handles legacy records.
- Confirm the payment calculation. For an interest-bearing deposit, the bank repays the eligible amount with applicable interest under current directions. Do not assume interest applies to a non-interest-bearing balance or assume a universal rate. Ask the bank to explain the calculation if the amount differs from your records.
- Keep the payment trail. Preserve the bank’s approval or settlement letter, payment advice, and any statement showing the credit. These records help if an heir, co-holder, auditor, or tax adviser later needs to understand how the balance was resolved.
Do not send RBI’s bank-side forms as a customer claim
RBI’s operational guidance describes returns and reimbursement paperwork that banks submit to RBI after handling a customer claim. Forms sometimes referred to as RBI Form II or Form III are bank-side reporting or reimbursement documents, not a universal customer application. Your claim belongs with the bank that held the deposit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the bank makes a partial customer repayment, the operational guidance says the bank claims the entire amount transferred for that depositor, together with any interest payable, from the DEA Fund. That is the bank’s reconciliation with RBI; it is not an instruction for the customer to demand an additional payment beyond the amount the bank determines is payable.
Who handles the claim?
| Situation | Where you submit the claim | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Bank remains operational | The bank that held the account | The bank verifies the claimant, pays the eligible amount, and then seeks reimbursement from the DEA Fund. |
| Bank is under liquidation | The bank’s liquidator | The liquidator follows the separate DICGC coverage and reimbursement procedure applicable to the failed bank and deposit. |
RBI’s FAQ is clear that the ordinary operational-bank route is a claim to the bank. RBI does not replace that bank as the customer-facing claims office. A UDGAM listing can help you identify the institution, but it does not determine whether you, a nominee, or an heir is entitled to payment.
How can a legal heir claim a deceased relative’s deposit?
RBI confirms that a legal heir may claim an unclaimed amount belonging to a deceased depositor. The bank must first determine which authority applies to the account. A valid nomination or survivorship instruction may lead to a different process from an account with no nominee, a disputed succession, or multiple heirs.

Ask the relevant bank for a case-specific checklist covering identity, the death record, the account relationship, nomination or survivorship status, and succession authority where required. The reviewed RBI customer FAQs do not establish one exhaustive document list that works for every bank, account, and family situation, so do not rely on a universal form downloaded from an unrelated source.

What if the bank is in liquidation?
Do not send a liquidation claim to an ordinary branch that no longer has authority to settle it. RBI’s DEA Fund FAQ directs claimants to the bank’s liquidator. Confirm the liquidator’s official contact details through RBI, the bank’s notices, or another authoritative channel before sending personal documents.
The liquidation route depends on whether the deposit is insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), the amount covered, and the requirements applying to that failed bank. RBI’s March 5, 2024 FAQ describes a DICGC limit of ₹5 lakh, including accrued interest where applicable and where the claim is in the same right and capacity. It also describes treatment on a reimbursement basis for amounts above the insured cover or deposits that are not insured, subject to the applicable requirements. Because insurance terms can change, verify the current DICGC limit and the liquidator’s instructions before relying on that dated figure.
This route is materially different from an operational-bank claim: the liquidator, not a normal branch or UDGAM, controls the filing and payment sequence. Ask whether the claim is being handled through DICGC insurance, liquidation distributions, or both, and retain the acknowledgement for each submission.
How long does a claim take, and is interest paid?
There is no scheme-wide customer deadline
RBI says the scheme sets no specific time limit for a customer’s claim. That does not create a guaranteed bank processing period. The reviewed customer FAQs do not state a universal service-level deadline for an ordinary claim. When you submit the claim, ask the bank for a case reference and a written expected timeline; if the bank requests more evidence, ask whether the timeline has been reset and why.
Operational guidance contains reporting and reimbursement steps for banks, but those bank-side dates should not be treated as a customer deadline or a promise that every claim will be settled within the same number of days.

Interest depends on the type of deposit
The amount transferred to the DEA Fund includes accrued interest. When the bank repays a claimant, applicable interest is paid for an interest-bearing deposit as described in RBI’s FAQ. That wording does not promise interest on a non-interest-bearing balance, and it does not establish one rate for every product or period. Request the bank’s calculation, including the deposit type and the period used, if you need to reconcile the payment.
What if KYC is outdated or the account must be activated?
RBI’s amendment dated June 12, 2025, requires banks to make KYC updation for activation of inoperative accounts and unclaimed deposits available at every branch, including non-home branches. Banks should endeavour to offer the Video-Customer Identification Process (V-CIP), and an authorised Business Correspondent may be used for activation under the referenced KYC direction.

UDGAM is RBI’s search facility and is not the institution that pays claims. The RBI materials cited here do not establish one universal customer fee or a single paid-service requirement for every bank and account type. Ask the relevant bank directly whether any charge applies to a particular document, verification, or payment method, and request the basis for any charge. Do not substitute a paid intermediary for the bank’s own process when the bank has provided a direct channel.
Search, settlement, and liquidation are different steps
Many delays arise from treating three separate tasks as one. Use this distinction when deciding what to do next:
- Search: UDGAM helps locate a possible unclaimed deposit at a participating bank and displays bank-specific instructions.
- Settlement: The identified bank verifies the claimant and pays the eligible amount, then seeks reimbursement from the DEA Fund.
- Liquidation: If the bank has failed and is under liquidation, the liquidator handles the claim under the applicable DICGC and reimbursement rules.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Submitting a payment request to RBI or treating UDGAM as a settlement portal.
- Assuming that a UDGAM search result proves ownership or guarantees approval.
- Searching only one spelling of the account-holder’s name when old records may use initials or a different transliteration.
- Using an old bank form or a document list from another bank without confirming the current checklist.
- Sending RBI’s bank-side returns or reimbursement forms as though they were customer forms.
- Assuming every balance earns interest or that one interest rate applies to all accounts.
- Ignoring the bank’s liquidation status and continuing to deal with a normal branch.
- Failing to keep the UDRN, submission receipt, correspondence, and case reference.
- Assuming UDGAM’s March 4, 2024 coverage statistics are still the current list of participating banks.
- Sending originals or sensitive identity documents through an unverified contact instead of the bank’s designated channel.
A practical checklist before you contact the bank
- Account-holder’s full name and known spelling variations.
- Bank name, branch details, old statements, passbook entries, deposit receipts, or other account evidence.
- UDGAM result and UDRN, if a match was found.
- Available identity details used for the search, such as PAN, passport, driving licence, voter ID, or date of birth.
- For an entity, the entity name and relevant authorised-signatory, PAN, CIN, or incorporation information.
- For a deceased depositor, the death record and the bank’s instructions on nomination, survivorship, or succession.
- A record of the exact form, documents, and submission channel the bank requested.
- Acknowledgement, case number, written timeline, and copies of all communications.
- The bank’s current operational or liquidation status and the official contact point for the claim.
The shortest reliable route is therefore: search UDGAM if the bank participates, identify the bank, obtain that bank’s current checklist, submit the claim to the bank, and retain proof of every step. If the bank is in liquidation, switch to the liquidator’s process instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I claim unclaimed money directly from RBI?
No. RBI’s DEA Fund FAQ says a customer or depositor claims the unclaimed amount from the bank. UDGAM helps locate the bank, but the bank verifies and pays the claimant before seeking reimbursement from the fund.
Can I search all banks for an unclaimed deposit?
UDGAM searches participating banks, not necessarily every bank. RBI reported 30 participating banks covering around 90% of DEA Fund unclaimed deposits by value as of March 4, 2024. Check the portal’s current bank list and contact a non-participating bank directly.
Does a UDGAM match mean my claim is approved?
No. A match identifies a possible unclaimed-deposit record and provides bank instructions. The bank must independently verify identity, ownership, nomination, or succession authority.
How can a legal heir claim a deceased relative’s deposit?
Contact the bank identified by UDGAM and request its current checklist. The process depends on nomination or survivorship terms, the number of heirs, and succession requirements; RBI does not prescribe one universal document list for every case.
Is there a deadline after money moves to the DEA Fund?
RBI says the scheme sets no specific time limit for a customer’s claim. Claim promptly anyway, and ask the bank for a case reference and expected timeline because there is no universal customer service deadline.
Will the bank pay interest?
For an interest-bearing deposit, the bank pays applicable interest as described in RBI’s FAQ. The wording does not promise interest on non-interest-bearing balances or establish one rate for every product and period.
What if the bank has failed or is being liquidated?
Approach the bank’s liquidator, not an ordinary branch. The liquidator follows the applicable DICGC coverage and reimbursement procedure. RBI’s March 5, 2024 FAQ used a ₹5 lakh DICGC limit, so verify current terms.
Can I update KYC at a non-home branch?
RBI’s June 12, 2025 amendment requires KYC updation for activation of inoperative accounts and unclaimed deposits at every branch, including non-home branches. Banks should endeavour to offer V-CIP, and an authorised Business Correspondent may be available.
Are RBI Form II or Form III the forms I should submit?
No. The operational guidance describes those as bank-side returns or reimbursement paperwork. Ask the bank for its current customer claim form and evidence checklist.
The Bottom Line
Use UDGAM to find the bank, then claim from that bank. The ten-year transfer to the DEA Fund does not erase your right to recover an eligible balance. Keep the UDRN and submission proof, follow the bank’s case-specific identity or heir requirements, and use the liquidator’s separate process if the bank has failed.
