If the IRS did not issue your federal income-tax refund within the applicable 45-day administrative period, it may owe interest automatically. The IRS normally calculates and pays that interest; “claiming” it usually means asking the agency to correct an amount you believe was too low or omitted. You can make an informal claim or submit Form 843, “Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement.” Your request should show the relevant dates, the interest calculation, and why an adjustment is due. The IRS says it must receive a request for additional overpayment interest within six years of the scheduled overpayment date.
What interest on a delayed federal refund means
This guide concerns individual federal income-tax overpayments handled by the Internal Revenue Service. State tax agencies use different rules, forms and deadlines, so do not apply these steps to a state refund without checking that state’s guidance.

When your return shows an overpayment, the IRS generally has an administrative period in which it can issue the refund without paying interest. The general period is 45 days, but the clock’s starting point depends on the facts of the overpayment. If the IRS misses the applicable period, interest may accrue on the amount it owes. The IRS generally stops the calculation when it refunds the overpayment and interest or offsets the overpayment against an outstanding liability.
The IRS usually performs the calculation itself. You have a separate issue only when the payment appears to contain no interest when interest should apply, or when the amount is less than the date-and-rate calculation supports.

When the IRS pays interest
The 45-day administrative period
IRS guidance generally says no overpayment interest is paid when the agency issues the refund within the applicable 45 days. The period is not a universal “45 days after you click submit” rule. The relevant event can vary with the return and payment history.
- For a return filed after its due date, Publication 17 describes the relevant 45 days as running from the filing date. Interest otherwise begins from the due date or the filing date, whichever is later, subject to the applicable overpayment rules.
- The IRS’s general interest guidance identifies other possible starting events, including receipt of a return in processable form and the date a payment was made.
- The date that controls your account may therefore be different from the date shown by a consumer refund tracker.
Because a return can involve more than one payment or a correction, establish the controlling date from your account records rather than assuming that one date applies to every dollar.
Interest follows the amount and the time outstanding
Interest is tied to the portion of the overpayment that remained outstanding and to the period for which it was outstanding. IRS overpayment rates can change each calendar quarter. A delay that spans several quarters may therefore require more than one rate in the calculation; quoting one current rate for the entire delay can produce the wrong result.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn offset changes the ending point. If the IRS applies the overpayment to another federal tax liability, overpayment interest generally stops on the date of the offset rather than continuing until money reaches your bank account.
Do not confuse refund estimates with the interest rule
The IRS describes typical delivery times of about three weeks for e-filed returns and six or more weeks for mailed returns. Those are processing estimates, not guarantees and not statutory interest thresholds. A refund can arrive within a normal estimate yet still require a date-specific review, while a return can take longer because of review or corrections without that fact alone proving an interest underpayment.

Use the 45-day rule and the dates on your IRS account to evaluate interest. Use the processing estimate only to understand whether a refund is still within a commonly stated delivery range.
How to check whether interest was paid
- Check refund status. Record the date the IRS says the refund was issued, not merely the date you first checked the tracker.
- Read every account notice. Look for a refund, credit or offset transaction and any line showing interest. Keep notices that explain a review, correction or application to another liability.
- Compare the payment with the return. Verify the overpayment amount after amended returns, credits, withholding changes or other adjustments. Interest is based on the amount the IRS ultimately recognized as an overpayment, not necessarily the amount you first expected.
- Identify the ending event. The calculation may end when the refund was issued or when the amount was offset. A deposit date, check date and account posting date can be different, so preserve the records showing each.
Step-by-step: request additional refund interest
1. Establish the relevant dates
Build a dated record before writing to the IRS. Use the filed return and its filing confirmation, the original due date, payment confirmations, IRS account transcripts or notices, the refund or offset notice, and correspondence about processing. Mark which event you believe starts the applicable period and which event ends it.
| Record | What it can establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tax return and filing confirmation | Due date, actual filing date and whether the return was accepted | A late-filed return can use the filing date for the relevant 45-day period described in Publication 17. |
| Payment records | Date and amount of an estimated payment, extension payment or other remittance | The IRS identifies payment date as a possible interest starting event. |
| IRS account transcript or notice | Processable-return, assessment, credit, refund and offset entries | These entries may show which event controlled the account. |
| Refund or offset documentation | Issue date, amount paid, interest component and date of application to another liability | Interest generally stops when the refund is paid or the overpayment is offset. |
2. Reconcile what the IRS paid
Separate the principal overpayment from any interest shown on the notice or payment record. Check whether the IRS reduced the principal during review, applied part of it to another federal balance, or issued more than one payment. A smaller principal or an offset can explain an amount that initially looks short.
Then identify the quarterly IRS overpayment rates that applied during the actual accrual period. Do not use a single present-day rate for an older delay. Your calculation should show each period, the balance on which interest was computed, the applicable rate, and the ending date for that period.
3. Prepare your own calculation
The IRS asks a taxpayer seeking additional overpayment interest to provide a computation and the reason for the request. A useful worksheet includes:

IRS guidance permits either an informal claim or Form 843 when you believe refund or credit interest was insufficient. The sources do not establish that one route is faster or more likely to succeed. Choose the format that lets you present a clear date-based calculation and retain proof of delivery.
| Route | What to include | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Informal claim | A written explanation, your calculation, copies of supporting records and a specific request for additional overpayment interest | A straightforward discrepancy that you can document without the form’s structured fields |
| Form 843 | The completed form, the relevant tax period, your calculation, reason for the request and supporting records | A formal, organized submission when you want the IRS to process the request under its claim procedure |
Use the current Form 843 instructions for the correct submission procedure and address. Procedures can change, and an old mailing address can delay or misroute a claim. Keep a complete copy and evidence of when the IRS received it.
5. File before the six-year deadline
The IRS states that a request for additional overpayment interest must be received within six years of the date of the scheduled overpayment. This is a receipt deadline, so do not wait until the last day to mail a paper request. The six-year rule for this interest request is not the same as every deadline that can apply to an ordinary claim for a credit or refund.
What Form 843 does—and what it does not do
Form 843 is titled “Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement.” The IRS uses it for several kinds of claims and abatements, including a request based on insufficient overpayment interest. Read the current instructions carefully and identify that you are seeking additional interest on a federal refund or credit.

Do not confuse this request with asking the IRS to abate interest that you owe because you paid a tax liability late. Both matters can involve Form 843, but they concern different balances, legal standards and supporting facts. A request about an unpaid tax bill should not be copied into a refund-interest claim.
The instructions generally call for a separate Form 843 for each tax period, fee year or type of tax, subject to stated exceptions. If your situation covers multiple periods, follow the current instructions rather than combining unrelated claims on one form.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you received a CP44 notice
CP44 has a specific instruction: you do not need to do anything immediately. The IRS says that within eight weeks it will either send the refund with applicable interest or explain that it offset the refund against another federal tax balance.
That eight-week direction is specific to CP44. Do not apply it automatically to a different notice number. Keep the notice, wait through the period it states, and then compare the eventual refund or offset explanation with your account records. If the payment still appears to omit or understate interest, use the claim process described above.
Illustrative timeline (not a personal calculation)
Suppose a taxpayer files a return after the original due date, has an overpayment, and later receives a refund. The taxpayer would first identify the actual filing date and determine whether that date controls the 45-day administrative period for the return. Next, the taxpayer would identify the date the return was in processable form or the payment date if one of those events controls under the applicable rule. The taxpayer would then record the refund issue date or, if the IRS applied the money to another federal balance, the offset date.

If the period crosses a calendar-quarter rate change, the worksheet would use the first rate through the change date and the next rate afterward. The taxpayer would subtract any interest already paid and request only the difference supported by the records. This example shows the order of analysis; it does not establish which start date or rate applies to any individual account.
Common reasons an apparent shortfall is not an interest underpayment
- The 45-day period was measured from the wrong event. The due date, late filing date, processable-return date and payment date can lead to different results.
- The principal changed during IRS review. Interest applies to the overpayment the IRS recognized, which may differ from the amount on the original return.
- Part of the refund was offset. Interest generally stops on the offset date, and the balance may have been applied to another federal liability.
- Quarterly rates were ignored. A delay spanning rate changes cannot reliably be tested with one rate.
- A processing estimate was treated as a legal threshold. Three weeks for e-filed returns and six or more weeks for mailed returns are typical delivery estimates, not the interest rule.
- A notice-specific instruction was generalized. The eight-week “no action” direction belongs to CP44 and should not be transferred to other notices.
- Refund interest was confused with interest owed to the IRS. The two situations use different substantive rules even when the same form appears in the process.
How to write the request
Keep the explanation factual and date based. State the tax period, the return filing date, the overpayment amount recognized by the IRS, the event you believe starts the calculation, the refund or offset date, and the interest already paid. Attach the worksheet and identify each supporting record. End with a precise request for the additional overpayment interest shown by your calculation.
Do not ask the IRS to accept a number without showing how you reached it. Do not include unrelated disputes about an unpaid tax balance in the same explanation unless the records show that an offset affects the refund-interest calculation.

When professional help may be worthwhile
A tax professional can help when several payments, amended returns, offsets, identity or filing-status issues, or multiple tax periods make the account difficult to reconstruct. The professional should still work from your IRS account records and provide a calculation that distinguishes principal, interest and offsets. No adviser can guarantee that the IRS will allow additional interest.
Federal and state refunds are separate questions
The rules here are limited to federal individual income-tax refunds administered by the IRS. This guidance does not establish a state’s interest rate, 45-day period, deadline, notice procedure or form. For a state refund, identify the state agency and tax period and follow that agency’s current instructions separately.
