You generally cannot claim a GST refund for purchases made in Sark because Sark does not have a general sales tax. Sark Government states that “Sark does not have Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax or Sales Tax.” The official information reviewed does not describe a Sark GST, a tourist shopping-refund scheme, eligible-purchase rules, a claim form or a customs refund procedure.
If a receipt from a Sark seller labels a charge “GST,” treat it as an unusual, transaction-specific issue rather than proof that a refund scheme exists. Ask the seller to explain the charge and, if necessary, ask the relevant Sark authority to identify its legal basis. Do not use Guernsey or Alderney GST instructions for a Sark purchase.

Is there a GST refund scheme in Sark?
No general Sark GST refund process is established by the official information available for this question. The Sark Government’s Living on Sark page says in its Taxation section that Sark does not have sales tax. Without a general sales tax charged at checkout, there is normally no tax component for a visitor to recover through a tourist-refund claim.

The official Sark material does not set an eligible-purchase threshold, minimum receipt value, visitor-status test, export requirement, refund percentage, filing deadline, form, processing fee or payment timeline.

The practical answer is therefore:
- There is no confirmed Sark GST refund application to submit for normal purchases.
- You should not collect receipts for a Sark tourist GST claim, visit customs for a refund stamp or complete a form that has not been issued by a Sark authority.
- If a seller has charged or labelled something “GST,” resolve that specific charge with the seller and seek clarification from the appropriate Sark authority.
What taxes does Sark describe instead?
Sark’s tax description includes several charges that are different from a general sales tax on everyday retail purchases. The categories listed by Sark Government include:
| Charge or tax category | What the official description indicates | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Property Tax | A charge associated with property. | It is not evidence of GST on a visitor’s shopping receipt or of a tourist refund. |
| Personal Capital Tax | A tax category listed for individuals’ capital. | It is not a checkout sales tax on ordinary purchases. |
| Impôt | An import duty on certain goods, including alcohol, tobacco and certain fuels. | It is not described as GST and does not create a general visitor purchase-refund scheme. |
| Property Transfer Tax | A charge connected with property transfers. | It is unrelated to a retail GST refund. |
| Lesser taxes on certain items | Other specific charges may apply to particular goods or transactions. | The listing does not establish a broad sales tax, refund rate or tourist claim process. |
The distinction matters because an import duty can be built into the cost or movement of particular goods without being a general tax added to every shop purchase. A visitor should not assume that a duty on imported alcohol, tobacco or fuel can be reclaimed simply because the goods were bought during a trip.
Why Guernsey and Alderney information can be misleading
Guernsey, Alderney and Sark are separate jurisdictions for this purpose. A 2026 States of Guernsey proposition discusses a proposed introduction of GST in Guernsey and Alderney and sets conditions for implementation. It does not establish GST in Sark, and it does not create a Sark refund form, rate, eligibility rule or deadline.

| What is established by the cited official material? | Sark Government says Sark has no sales tax. | The States of Guernsey published a 2026 proposition concerning a proposed GST framework. |
| Does it establish a Sark GST rate? | Not stated; no general Sark sales-tax rate is identified. | Any rate or operating details belong to the Guernsey/Alderney proposal, not Sark. |
| Does it establish a Sark tourist refund? | No. | No. It is not a Sark refund procedure. |
| Can a visitor transfer its forms or deadlines to Sark? | No basis is provided for doing so. | No. Jurisdiction-specific rules cannot be assumed to apply on Sark. |
For the wording and status of the Guernsey/Alderney proposal, consult the States of Guernsey Tax Reform 2026 proposition. Read it as a separate jurisdictional development, not as evidence that Sark has adopted GST.
What to do if a Sark receipt says “GST”
The official Sark information confirms the absence of sales tax but does not explain how to correct an individual retailer’s mistaken, nonstandard or mislabelled charge. Handle the receipt as a transaction dispute or clarification request, not as a known tax-refund claim.
- Keep the original documentation. Save the itemised receipt, card slip or payment confirmation, the date and location of purchase, and any online order or delivery details. Do not alter the receipt.
- Ask the seller for the legal basis of the charge. Request a written explanation of what “GST” means on that transaction, who imposed it, which jurisdiction applies and whether the seller can issue a corrected receipt or return the amount.
- Check whether the transaction actually involved another jurisdiction. Ask whether the seller, supplier, delivery address or invoicing entity is located outside Sark. A charge connected to a different jurisdiction should be explained under that jurisdiction’s rules rather than assumed to be Sark GST.
- Request a direct correction from the seller. If the seller acknowledges an error, ask for a refund or corrected invoice using the seller’s normal payment method. Keep the seller’s response and the date of any repayment.
- Seek official clarification if the seller cannot explain it. Use the Sark Government’s public information channels, beginning with its taxation information, and describe the exact charge. Ask which authority, if any, has jurisdiction. Ask for clarification rather than asserting that a statutory refund is due.
- Use payment-provider remedies only for a payment problem. If the seller will not address an unexplained charge, your card or payment provider may have its own transaction-dispute process. That is a payment dispute, not proof of a Sark GST refund entitlement; follow the provider’s stated deadlines and evidence requirements.
There is no official evidence establishing that a visitor can obtain a customs stamp, submit a standard Sark form or receive a fixed percentage back for a receipt marked “GST.” Do not pay a third party to process a supposed Sark tourist refund unless a Sark authority confirms that service and its legal basis.

Are any purchases “eligible” for a Sark GST refund?
Not under a general scheme identified by the official Sark material. The phrase “eligible purchases” presupposes a tax charged on a qualifying transaction and a published mechanism for reclaiming it. Neither is established for ordinary purchases in Sark.
That does not mean every charge connected with goods is identical. A specific import duty, excise-like charge or other item-specific tax may have its own rules, but the available Sark description does not provide a visitor refund pathway for those amounts. In particular:
- An item being imported does not turn its duty into GST.
- Buying alcohol, tobacco or certain fuels does not, by itself, create a tourist refund right.
- Taking goods off the island does not establish that a charge is refundable.
- A receipt’s use of the letters “GST” does not override Sark Government’s statement that Sark has no sales tax.
Only a written explanation from the seller or the relevant authority can resolve what a nonstandard charge represents in a particular transaction.

Common mistakes to avoid
Using a Guernsey form for a Sark purchase
Forms, rates and deadlines proposed or adopted for Guernsey or Alderney cannot be presumed to apply in Sark. Confirm the jurisdiction printed on the receipt and the authority responsible for the charge before completing any form.
Confusing import duty with sales tax
Sark’s Impôt is described as an import duty on certain goods. Calling it GST changes the tax category and can lead to the wrong refund request. Ask what the charge is legally called and what goods or event triggered it.

Relying on an online refund service
A website or intermediary may advertise a “Sark GST refund,” but an advertisement is not evidence of a Sark government scheme. Verify any claimed process with Sark Government before sending identity documents, receipts or money.
A practical checklist before and after buying
Before paying
- Read the itemised total and ask what any unfamiliar tax or duty label means.
- Confirm which business and jurisdiction are issuing the invoice.
- If the seller promises a refund, ask for the written terms, responsible authority and deadline.
After paying
- Retain the receipt and proof of payment.
- Photograph or save the full invoice if it is issued electronically.
- Ask for an explanation promptly if “GST” appears.
- Keep all correspondence if you request a correction or payment dispute.
What this means for trip budgeting
Do not build a Sark travel budget around recovering a percentage of shopping costs. The official information supports planning on the basis that Sark has no general sales tax, while recognising that property-related taxes, personal capital tax, import duty on specified goods and other item-specific charges exist in their own contexts.
For a normal shop purchase, the relevant questions are the advertised price, any clearly identified charge, and whether the seller can explain it—not how to complete a tourist GST claim. For a charge that appears inconsistent with that description, obtain a transaction-specific answer before assuming either that the amount is valid or that it is refundable.

Bottom line
Sark Government says Sark has no sales tax, so there is no confirmed general GST refund scheme for eligible visitor purchases. Sark’s Impôt is described as an import duty on certain goods, not GST on ordinary shopping. Keep any receipt that labels a charge “GST,” ask the seller to explain or correct it, and seek clarification from Sark authorities if needed. Do not transfer Guernsey or Alderney GST rules to Sark.
