There is no single best currency for every New York–London trip. The right choice is the program that has a seat in your cabin on your date at an acceptable combination of points, taxes, carrier charges and change rules. Check Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, British Airways Club Avios, American Airlines AAdvantage and Air Canada Aeroplan before moving any transferable bank points.
Do not transfer points because an award chart or a “from” price looks attractive. Confirm a bookable itinerary first, then compare the complete cash total and the risks of the transfer.

What to compare before choosing an award
New York–London awards are priced by separate loyalty programs, not by one common market rate. A nonstop economy seat, a premium-cabin seat, a peak-date itinerary and a connection can all produce very different results. Compare the same travel date, cabin, passenger count and routing in each program.
- Points required: distinguish a promotional starting price from a fixed award amount or a distance-band benchmark.
- Cash due: include taxes, carrier charges, partner-booking fees and other third-party charges shown at checkout.
- Routing: note whether the itinerary is nonstop, connects, and uses the airline and cabin you actually want.
- Transfer risk: check the transfer ratio, account eligibility, processing time and whether a completed transfer can be reversed.
- Flexibility: read the change and cancellation terms for the specific fare and program before paying.
Live inventory changes constantly. A program can be the best option for one date and a poor option the next, so a universal cheapest-winner claim is not reliable.

How the four main programs work
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
Virgin Points pay the flight price while you pay taxes, fees and carrier charges separately. Virgin’s 2026 reward-seat page advertises seats from 6,000 points one way on some routes. That is a general starting example, not a New York–London quote and not a guarantee for any particular cabin or date. Saver-priced seats depend on availability.
Search the Flying Club reward-seat tool for the exact date and cabin. Record the total points and the cash amount before comparing it with the other programs. A low points figure can be less attractive if the cash component is high or if only an inconvenient connection is available.
For flights originating outside the United Kingdom, Virgin lists a $100 per-person change or cancellation charge, or the local-currency equivalent. A cancellation made more than 24 hours before travel returns points, taxes, fees and charges. Within 24 hours, points and fees are not refunded, although some taxes may be. For bookings made on or after November 5, 2025, changing one sector reprices only that sector, rather than automatically repricing the entire itinerary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

British Airways Reward Flights combine a fixed Avios amount with a fixed cash amount for taxes, fees and carrier charges. The amount depends on travel date, destination and cabin, and BA separates peak from off-peak dates. Examples on the BA page were stated as correct in May 2026; use the current booking search for a present-day quote.
BA’s search first displays BA-operated availability and then partner availability. A partner flight can require a different Avios amount from a BA flight on a similar route and distance. Compare the actual itinerary rather than assuming that every London award has the same price.
Most Reward Flights can be changed or cancelled subject to the applicable service fee and conditions. To receive a refund after cancellation, BA requires the cancellation at least 24 hours before the first flight. The fare rules shown during booking control the result.

American Airlines AAdvantage
AAdvantage miles can book British Airways and other oneworld flights. This is a separate redemption path from booking the same carrier with Avios. The fact that both programs can access a flight does not establish that either one will be cheaper.
Search the AAdvantage result for the exact date, cabin and routing, then compare both the miles and the cash due with Virgin, BA and Aeroplan. The American guidance reviewed for this route confirms partner redeemability but does not provide a New York–London award price, so a live AAdvantage quote is essential.
Air Canada Aeroplan
Aeroplan uses a distance-based chart. It separates Air Canada and selected partners from other partner airlines, and its points requirement can also vary with the itinerary and high-demand periods.
The Flight Rewards Chart effective June 2026 lists 75,000 Aeroplan points one way for business class on “all other partners” in the Atlantic 2,501–5,000-mile band. A New York–London nonstop falls within that broad distance band, making 75,000 points a useful benchmark rather than a guaranteed price for every itinerary. Aeroplan states that seats are subject to availability and that the number of points varies by itinerary and demand.
Partner awards can add a partner-booking fee. Taxes and other third-party charges may also apply. Check the final payment screen rather than valuing an Aeroplan award from points alone.
Side-by-side comparison
| Program | How the award price is described | Evidence-based figure or rule | Partner access relevant to New York–London |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | Points plus separately displayed taxes, fees and carrier charges; saver seats depend on availability | From 6,000 points one way on some routes; not a route-specific quote | Virgin-operated reward seats are searched through Flying Club |
| British Airways Club Avios | Fixed Avios amount plus fixed cash amount; peak and off-peak pricing | Current amount depends on date, destination and cabin | BA search shows BA availability and then partner availability |
| American Airlines AAdvantage | Live AAdvantage award pricing | Route price must be checked for the chosen itinerary | British Airways and other oneworld flights are bookable with AAdvantage miles |
| Air Canada Aeroplan | Distance-based chart with itinerary, demand and partner distinctions | 75,000 points one way for business on all other partners in the 2,501–5,000-mile Atlantic band, chart effective June 2026 | Partner awards may carry a partner-booking fee |
How many points and how much cash will you need?
You cannot answer that accurately without a date, cabin, passenger count and the exact flight. The published figures are reference points, not guaranteed quotes.
Rank #3
Economy and premium economy
Start with Virgin’s reward search and BA’s peak/off-peak calendar because both can expose lower-priced dates when saver or off-peak seats exist. Then check AAdvantage and Aeroplan for the same date. A connection may change the price and the taxes, so keep the routing consistent when comparing.
Business class
Use Aeroplan’s 75,000-point Atlantic-band figure as a benchmark for an eligible all-other-partner business award, not as a promise of a nonstop New York–London seat. Compare it with the live Virgin, BA and AAdvantage results. A higher points quote can still be preferable if it has materially lower cash charges, a nonstop flight or better cancellation terms.
Cash components
Virgin explicitly says that points cover the flight price while taxes, fees and carrier charges remain payable. BA describes a fixed cash amount for taxes, fees and carrier charges. Aeroplan warns that partner fees, taxes and third-party charges may apply. Put the cash total in the same comparison sheet as the points amount; otherwise you are not comparing like with like.

Step-by-step: find the best bookable option
- Define the trip. Write down the departure airport or airports you can use in the New York area, the London airport you prefer, travel dates, cabin, number of travelers and whether a connection is acceptable.
- Search Virgin Atlantic. Open Flying Club reward-seat search, enter the date and cabin, and record points, taxes, fees, carrier charges, flight numbers and whether the result is nonstop.
- Search British Airways. Check both peak and off-peak dates if your schedule allows. Record the Avios, fixed cash amount, operating carrier and change or cancellation conditions shown for the fare.
- Search AAdvantage. Look for British Airways and other oneworld partner results. Record the mileage price, cash due, cabin and routing; do not infer a price from the fact that the flight is available through Avios.
- Search Aeroplan. Check the same date and cabin, identify the operating partner and note any partner-booking fee, taxes or third-party charges. Compare the live result with the June 2026 chart benchmark only as a reasonableness check.
- Normalize the comparison. Put every result in one table with columns for points, cash, nonstop or connection, operating airline, cabin, cancellation deadline and change cost.
- Confirm inventory again. Before transferring points, refresh the chosen result and proceed far enough to see the final price and rules. An award that disappears or changes is not bookable at the earlier terms.
- Transfer only after confirmation. Send the exact number of points required, allowing for any minimum transfer increment or small price change shown by the program. Keep enough flexibility for the final checkout amount.
- Book and save the rules. Download or screenshot the confirmation, receipt and fare conditions, including the deadline for a refund or change.
Moving bank points into an airline program
Transfer partners can make a scarce seat reachable, but the transfer itself introduces timing and reversibility risks.
Chase Ultimate Rewards to Virgin Points
Eligible United States Chase cardmembers can transfer Ultimate Rewards to Virgin Points at 1:1: 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points become 1,000 Virgin Points. Virgin says most transfers process by the next business day, but they can take up to seven business days. Its guidance also says all transfers are final. Verify Flying Club availability before initiating the transfer.
Chase Ultimate Rewards to Aeroplan
Air Canada lists a 1:1 United States conversion for Chase Ultimate Rewards to Aeroplan: 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points become 1,000 Aeroplan points. Confirm that your account and card qualify and that the award remains available before sending points.

Other listed Avios sources
British Airways lists Chase Ultimate Rewards and Capital One Rewards among Avios collection partners. The account-specific transfer ratio, eligibility and processing details should be checked in the relevant program before you commit points.

Change and cancellation issues that can alter the best choice
Virgin Atlantic
For an itinerary originating outside the UK, the listed change or cancellation charge is $100 per person or the local-currency equivalent. Cancellation more than 24 hours before departure returns points, taxes, fees and charges; cancellation within 24 hours does not return points or fees, although some taxes may be refundable. On bookings made from November 5, 2025, changing one sector reprices that sector only.
British Airways
Most Reward Flights can be changed or cancelled with the applicable service fee and conditions. A refund requires cancellation at least 24 hours before the first flight. Read the exact fare terms because a low Avios price does not remove the service conditions.
Aeroplan and AAdvantage
The material available for this comparison does not establish one universal change or cancellation fee for every Aeroplan or AAdvantage itinerary. Treat those rules as booking-specific and inspect them before payment, particularly when a partner flight is involved.

You have flexible dates
Search a date range and prioritize a genuinely low total rather than a single program’s advertised starting price. BA’s peak/off-peak distinction and Virgin’s saver availability can make moving by a day or two more valuable than switching currencies.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
You need a nonstop flight
Filter or inspect each result for the operating carrier and connection points. An award with fewer points is not the better choice if it adds a long connection or places you in a different cabin for one segment.
You are booking business class
Use Aeroplan’s 75,000-point benchmark for the relevant partner distance band as a comparison anchor, then verify whether the live itinerary qualifies and what fees are added. Check all four programs because partner access and inventory differ by date.
You have Chase points
Chase provides a 1:1 path to Virgin Points for eligible United States cardmembers and a 1:1 path to Aeroplan. Compare both programs first, because transferring to one currency removes the ability to use those points in the other.

You may need to cancel
Put the cancellation deadline and fee beside the points and cash totals. Virgin’s outside-UK $100 per-person rule and BA’s 24-hour refund deadline can materially change the value of an otherwise similar award.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using a “from” price as a quote: Virgin’s 6,000-point figure is a general starting example, not a New York–London promise.
- Ignoring cash: taxes, carrier charges, partner fees and third-party charges can outweigh a points difference.
- Comparing different cabins or routings: keep the operating carrier, connection pattern and cabin consistent.
- Assuming partner programs price identically: BA Avios, Virgin Points, AAdvantage miles and Aeroplan points are separate currencies with different pricing methods.
- Transferring before checking inventory: seats can vanish while a transfer is pending, and transfers may be irreversible.
- Treating a dated promotion as current: the 30% Avios bonus that ended September 27, 2026 is no longer available.
- Skipping the fare rules: cancellation deadlines and sector-repricing rules can matter more than a modest points saving.
Bottom line
For a New York–London trip, compare Virgin Flying Club, BA Avios, AAdvantage and Aeroplan on the same live itinerary. Virgin offers a published starting example but variable availability; BA uses fixed Avios-and-cash combinations with peak and off-peak dates; AAdvantage provides another path to British Airways and oneworld seats; and Aeroplan supplies a June 2026 benchmark of 75,000 points one way for eligible all-other-partner business awards in the relevant Atlantic distance band. None is automatically best. The winning option is the one you can actually book with the lowest acceptable combination of points, cash, routing and flexibility.
