Start by listing the income, unpaid care, debts, housing, childcare, education and final costs your household would face, then subtract savings, survivor income, employer benefits and usable existing cover. Choose a policy term, benefit pattern and ownership arrangement that match those needs, and read the contract’s exclusions, renewal, conversion, beneficiary and lapse provisions before replacing any policy.
Start with the financial loss your death would create
NAIC’s Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide puts the central question plainly: “How much life insurance to buy depends on the financial needs that will continue after your death.” There is no regulator-endorsed income multiple that works for every household. A family with young children, a large mortgage and one earner has a different need from a mortgage-free couple whose children are independent.

Count the economic value of what the insured person does, not just their payslip. A parent who provides daily childcare, transport, cooking, housework or care for an adult relative may create a substantial replacement cost even without receiving a wage. The policy should address the loss that would actually fall on survivors.

List the people and obligations that depend on the insured
- Children, a partner or spouse, and any adult relatives who rely on the insured’s income or services.
- The years for which each person is likely to need support. A child’s need may run to adulthood; a mortgage need may end when the loan is repaid.
- Mortgage and other debts that survivors may want or need to repay.
- Childcare, education and special-care costs that would arise after the death.
- Funeral and other final expenses, allowing for the rules and costs in your jurisdiction.
- The value of unpaid care, household management and practical services that would have to be bought or shared.
Subtract resources that would genuinely be available
- Cash savings and other assets that the household could use without undermining its long-term plans.
- The surviving adult’s realistic earnings, pensions or other survivor income.
- Employer death-in-service benefits, checking eligibility, waiting periods and whether the benefit ends when employment ends.
- Individual policies already in force, including their benefit, term, exclusions and ownership.
- Any public or employer support that is certain under the family’s circumstances; do not assume a benefit that requires an application or a future rule change.
The result is a planning starting point, not a promise that an insurer will accept a particular amount or that a household should buy it. Keep the premium sustainable: cover that lapses because it is unaffordable cannot protect the family.

A transparent way to estimate an amount
Use a worksheet that separates one-off costs from the continuing support a family would need. This avoids hiding a large mortgage or years of childcare inside an arbitrary multiplier.
| Need or resource | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Income and services lost | Annual take-home income plus the cost of replacing care and household work | Shows the ongoing gap after the insured dies |
| Duration | Years until children become independent, debts end or another dependency changes | Prevents buying a term that ends before the need |
| Debts and housing | Mortgage balance, other debts and the survivor’s preferred repayment plan | A death benefit may need to clear a liability or fund housing costs |
| Childcare and education | Expected paid childcare, school or training costs and special needs | These costs can rise when one adult’s unpaid care disappears |
| Final expenses | Funeral and immediate administration costs appropriate to your location | Provides liquidity when the family is dealing with the death |
| Available resources | Savings, survivor earnings, pensions, employer benefits and existing cover | Prevents paying for protection that duplicated dependable resources |
| Affordable premium | A payment the household can maintain in normal and difficult months | Affordability protects the policy from lapse |
Illustrative planning arithmetic
Suppose a household estimates a £40,000 annual support gap for 12 years (£480,000), a £220,000 mortgage, £45,000 of education and childcare costs, and £15,000 of final expenses. Its gross need would be £760,000. If £120,000 of savings, £80,000 of dependable employer benefit and £100,000 of existing cover would actually reach the family, the indicative additional need would be £460,000.
Those figures are an example of the method, not a recommendation or a market formula. Inflation, investment returns, taxes, benefit delays, changing earnings and the family’s spending choices can all alter the result. An adviser can help model complex cases; the policy contract, rather than a worksheet, determines what will be paid.

Decide first how long the financial risk lasts. A policy is useful only if it is in force when the family needs it. A term ending while children still depend on the insured or while a mortgage remains outstanding leaves a gap, whereas paying for lifetime cover may be unnecessary for a temporary obligation.

Common temporary needs
- Replacing earnings while children are young and a surviving parent cannot immediately increase work hours.
- Covering a mortgage or other debt until its scheduled repayment date.
- Protecting a business or a planned education cost for a defined period.
Lifetime needs
A lifelong need can arise where a dependant will always require support, where a person wants funds for final expenses, or where estate and legacy planning requires a death benefit at any age. Lifetime objectives may justify examining permanent insurance, but the higher and more complex cost makes the contract’s guarantees, charges and assumptions particularly important.
Compare the main policy types
| Type | How it works | When it may fit | Points to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Term life | Provides a death benefit only if death occurs during the agreed term; generally has no cash value | A defined income, mortgage or childcare obligation; usually lower-cost protection for a specified period | End date, guaranteed renewal, renewal premiums, conversion rights, age limits and exclusions |
| Whole life | Designed to remain in force for the insured’s lifetime and may build cash value | A genuine lifetime protection objective where the household can sustain the premiums | Guaranteed benefit and premium, cash-value growth assumptions, charges, surrender effects and borrowing terms |
| Universal life (US terminology) | A cash-value policy in which premiums and benefits may be adjustable; continuation depends on policy value and charges | Someone seeking flexible lifetime coverage who understands ongoing funding and policy mechanics | What is guaranteed, current versus illustrated values, charges, required funding and lapse risk |
| Variable life (US terminology) | A permanent cash-value form with investment-linked values and policy-specific risks | Only after understanding investment volatility and the contract’s guarantees | Investment choices, fees, volatility, guarantees, surrender value and consequences of borrowing |
NAIC describes term insurance as offering more protection per premium dollar than cash-value cover in many cases, but it does not create cash value. Renewal is not automatically available at the original price: premiums may rise, and some contracts stop renewal at a stated age. Verify the exact guaranteed-renewal and conversion wording.
Permanent policies are not interchangeable. Whole life, universal life and variable life have different guarantees, adjustment rights, investment exposure and failure modes. Do not treat a cash-value balance as a substitute for calculating the protection your dependants need. If considering surrendering, borrowing against or replacing a permanent policy, obtain qualified advice on charges, tax and the risk of reducing or losing the death benefit.
Choose the death-benefit pattern
Level cover
The death benefit stays fixed throughout the term. It is straightforward for a fixed debt or a known support target, but a fixed amount can buy less as living costs rise.

Decreasing cover
The benefit reduces over time and may track a repayment mortgage or another liability that is expected to fall. Check that the policy’s reduction schedule matches the actual debt; a mismatch can leave either unnecessary cover or a shortfall.
Increasing cover
The benefit rises during the term to help address inflation. The contract may also increase premiums, and the indexing method, limits and options differ by product and country. Read how increases are offered and what happens if you decline them.
Decide between joint and separate policies
UK MoneyHelper guidance says a joint policy is usually cheaper than two single policies, but normally pays when the first insured person dies. The surviving policyholder may then have no cover on their own life unless a new policy is available. Two single policies can pay on either person’s death, which may better match a household that would face a financial loss after each death.

| Arrangement | Potential advantage | Trade-off to examine |
|---|---|---|
| One joint policy | Typically lower combined premium under UK consumer guidance and one administration record | Usually one first-death payment; check what happens to the surviving person’s cover and whether a new policy is needed |
| Two single policies | Can provide a payment after either person’s death and allows different amounts or terms | Often costs more overall; requires two applications, premiums, beneficiaries and reviews |
Ownership, beneficiaries, second-death provisions and any continuation rights are contract-specific. Confirm them in the documents rather than relying on a general description. In households with unequal incomes or care responsibilities, calculate each person’s lost services separately; the lower earner may still need substantial cover.

Check premiums, renewals and contract mechanics
Official consumer guidance does not establish a current market-wide premium figure, so compare actual quotations on like-for-like benefits and terms. Ask whether each premium is guaranteed for the stated period, reviewable by the insurer or scheduled to change at renewal. A low initial payment can become unaffordable if renewal rates rise sharply.
- Renewal: Is renewal guaranteed, until what age, and at what pricing basis? Can the insurer require new medical evidence?
- Conversion: Can term cover be converted to permanent cover without new medical underwriting, and before which date or age?
- Age limits: When does cover end, and are renewal or conversion rights curtailed at a stated age?
- Exclusions and definitions: Which deaths or circumstances are excluded, and how are key terms defined?
- Lapse and missed payments: Is there a grace period, reinstatement process or loss of cover? What happens to cash value or guarantees?
- Benefit delivery: Who receives the money, how is a claim made, and are there conditions that could delay payment?
Never cancel an existing policy merely because a replacement application has been submitted. NAIC consumer guidance recommends waiting until the replacement has been issued and reviewed. Compare the final contract, confirm the new policy is in force, and only then decide whether discontinuing old cover is appropriate.
Apply accurately and name beneficiaries deliberately
Answer health, occupation, lifestyle and financial questions completely and consistently. An insurer may use the information to underwrite the risk and to apply the contract’s definitions and exclusions. Do not assume that a policy will pay for every cause of death or that a verbal statement changes the written terms.
Name a primary beneficiary and, where the policy permits, contingent beneficiaries. Consider what happens if a beneficiary dies first, is a minor, cannot be located or is subject to local legal restrictions. A will does not automatically override a policy designation in every jurisdiction; ownership, probate and trust effects require local legal advice.

Keep a findable record
- Insurer name and contact details.
- Policy number, type, benefit amount, term and premium schedule.
- Where the full policy, amendments and latest beneficiary confirmation are stored.
- Names of primary and contingent beneficiaries and the date designations were last reviewed.
- Contact details for a trusted person or adviser who can help locate the documents.
NAIC’s consumer insight dated October 12, 2026 says tens of millions of dollars in life-insurance death benefits go unclaimed each year. That is a broad statement, not an exact count. Making the record accessible can help intended beneficiaries discover the policy.
Review cover when the family changes
Recalculate after a birth or adoption, marriage, separation, home purchase, major job change, substantial pay rise or fall, debt repayment, inheritance, or a change in who provides care. Recheck employer death-in-service benefits after changing jobs because workplace cover may not follow you. Review beneficiaries at the same time; a designation that was sensible before a divorce or new child may no longer reflect the family’s intention.
Do not assume that increasing cover is always possible on the original terms. A new application can involve age, health, occupation and affordability changes. Conversely, reducing an unnecessary benefit may free cash for an emergency fund or other protection, but check surrender charges and contractual effects first.
Know what life insurance does not cover
Life insurance pays on the insured person’s death under the policy terms. It is not income-protection or disability insurance: MoneyHelper distinguishes life cover from protection that replaces earnings when illness or disability prevents work. A household that depends on one income may need to assess both risks.
Tax treatment, trusts, probate, inheritance-tax rules, insurer solvency standards, underwriting eligibility and product availability vary by country and, in the United States, by state. MoneyHelper is UK consumer guidance; NAIC is a US insurance-regulator association. Do not combine a UK estate-planning statement with a US state rule. Check your local regulator and the policy wording, and use a qualified financial, tax or legal adviser for complex circumstances.
A decision checklist before you buy
- Write down each dependant, lost income stream, unpaid service, debt, childcare, education and final expense.
- Estimate the years each need will last.
- Subtract savings, survivor income, pensions, employer benefits and existing policies that would actually be available.
- Set a premium limit that remains manageable if the household budget tightens.
- Obtain comparisons with the same benefit, term and underwriting assumptions; do not compare a short level-term quote with a lifetime policy as if they were equivalent.
- Choose level, decreasing or increasing benefits to match the obligation and understand how premiums respond.
- Read renewability, conversion, age limits, exclusions, definitions, lapse rules and beneficiary provisions in the proposed contract.
- Tell beneficiaries or a trusted person where the policy record is kept.
- Wait for replacement cover to be issued and checked before cancelling existing insurance.
- Schedule a review after major family, debt, employment or health changes.
The practical standard for a good choice
A suitable policy is not automatically the cheapest quote or the largest available benefit. It is cover that remains in force for the period of genuine dependence, pays a benefit that addresses the household’s calculated shortfall, and has terms the owner understands and can maintain. If the need is temporary, term cover may provide efficient protection; if the need is genuinely lifelong, permanent insurance may be worth examining with specialist advice. In either case, the family’s needs, the contract’s guarantees and the premium’s long-term affordability should drive the decision.
