Monthly filing gives you a predictable monthly reporting cycle. QRMP reduces the main return filings to one GSTR-1 and one GSTR-3B per quarter, but you still pay tax every month and may need to use the Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) to report business-to-business invoices promptly.
QRMP is usually worth considering when your GSTIN is eligible, your transaction volume is modest, and fewer full return filings would simplify your work. Monthly filing is generally more suitable when you want every outward supply reported each month, have frequent B2B transactions, or do not want to manage quarterly returns alongside interim IFF deadlines. The choice is operational; neither cadence is automatically better for every business.

First confirm that this guide applies to your GSTIN
This comparison is for Indian GST normal taxpayers who are required to file both GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. It does not treat composition taxpayers, non-resident taxpayers, input service distributors, tax deducted at source (TDS) deductors, tax collected at source (TCS) e-commerce operators, or other special registration categories as if they had the same choice. The GST Portal lists classes that do not file GSTR-1, so check your registration type before choosing a cadence.

QRMP is an option for eligible registrations, not an automatic entitlement for every registered person. The operational answer is the option shown for the particular GSTIN on the live GST Portal. A turnover figure for the business as a whole, or a QRMP selection made in an earlier year, does not by itself prove that the option is available now.

Monthly filing and QRMP compared
| Consideration | Monthly filing | Quarterly QRMP |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Taxpayers subject to the applicable GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B requirements, subject to their registration profile | Eligible taxpayers meeting the QRMP turnover, filing-status and registration conditions described by the GST Portal |
| GSTR-1 cadence | Every month | Once for each quarter |
| GSTR-3B cadence | Every month | Once for each quarter |
| Tax payment | Follow the applicable monthly return and payment schedule | Monthly challan payments continue even though the two main returns are quarterly |
| Interim B2B reporting | Reported in the relevant monthly GSTR-1 | Optional IFF for specified documents in the first two months of a quarter; otherwise report in the quarterly GSTR-1 |
| Work pattern | More frequent return preparation and filing | Fewer main filings, plus monthly payment work and optional IFF work |
The GST Portal describes QRMP as filing GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax dues monthly through a challan. That distinction matters: QRMP changes the filing rhythm, not the obligation to fund GST during the quarter.
How QRMP eligibility is determined
The ₹5 crore turnover ceiling
The QRMP FAQ describes eligibility using aggregate annual turnover at the PAN level of up to ₹5 crore in both the current financial year and the preceding financial year, where applicable. This is not a per-GSTIN test. Turnover associated with registrations under the same PAN is relevant to the aggregate calculation.
Recommended Free Tools
Latest GSTR-3B must be filed
The FAQ also requires the latest due GSTR-3B to have been filed. A registration that otherwise appears to fit the turnover limit may not be offered QRMP if its latest required GSTR-3B is outstanding.
You must be liable for both main forms
QRMP is limited to taxpayers liable to file both GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B and to the eligible registration categories shown in the scheme guidance. If your GSTIN belongs to a category with different return obligations, do not apply this monthly-versus-quarterly comparison without checking that category’s rules.
New registrations and differing FAQ wording
The separate GSTR-1 FAQ says quarterly GSTR-1 may be selected where preceding-year turnover was up to ₹5 crore, or where a person registered during the current financial year expects aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore. It also says that selecting quarterly GSTR-1 entails quarterly GSTR-3B. Because the FAQs frame some new-registration details differently, use the QRMP option displayed for the GSTIN on the live portal as the operational test rather than relying on one phrase in isolation.
Choosing a cadence by your actual workflow
Choose monthly filing when reporting speed is the priority
Monthly filing may fit a business that wants each month’s outward supplies consolidated and filed without waiting for quarter-end. It avoids the separate decision of whether to use IFF in the first two months of a quarter. If customers regularly need invoice data reflected in their records during the month, a monthly GSTR-1 gives you a single recurring reporting route.

Monthly filing also suits teams that already close their sales ledger every month and prefer not to accumulate three months of data for a quarterly return. The trade-off is twelve GSTR-1 filings and twelve GSTR-3B filings in a year instead of four of each.
Choose QRMP when fewer main returns would reduce administration
QRMP may fit a smaller taxpayer that can maintain accurate books, make the required monthly challan payments, and prepare a complete quarterly return. You file the two main forms once per quarter, but monthly payment tasks remain. If B2B customers need documents before the quarter closes, you must also be comfortable using IFF for eligible documents or accepting that those documents will appear only in the quarterly GSTR-1.
Use a simple decision test
- Eligibility: Is the QRMP option actually available for this GSTIN?
- Close process: Can your records be kept current for three months without creating a quarter-end backlog?
- Payments: Can you calculate and pay the monthly challan on time?
- Customer timing: Do B2B recipients need invoice information during the quarter?
- Team preference: Would your staff rather complete a short monthly return cycle or a larger quarterly close?
- Change management: Are you willing to monitor the portal’s selection windows and any due-date extensions?
If the answers favour fewer formal returns and you can handle monthly payments, QRMP is a reasonable candidate. If the answers favour continuous monthly reporting and fewer interim decisions, monthly filing is usually the cleaner workflow.
What “quarterly” actually means under QRMP
Under QRMP, both GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are filed quarterly. The tax itself is not deferred to the end of the quarter: monthly payments continue through challans. Treating QRMP as a quarter-end-only obligation is a common process error because it can leave the electronic cash ledger short when the quarterly return is eventually filed.

IFF: the optional bridge for B2B documents
What IFF is for
The Invoice Furnishing Facility is available only to quarterly QRMP taxpayers and only for the first two months of a quarter. It can be used for specified business-to-business invoices, registered credit and debit notes, and specified amendments. It is not a replacement for every GSTR-1 table.
Why a recipient may care
Documents filed through IFF are reflected in the recipient’s GSTR-2B. Timely IFF reporting can therefore give a registered customer invoice information earlier than waiting for the quarterly GSTR-1, provided the document is one of the tables covered by the facility.

IFF deadline and expiry
The due date for IFF is the 13th of the month succeeding the relevant month. IFF is optional, but after that month’s due date the facility expires for that month. A QRMP filer that misses the deadline cannot treat the expired IFF window as still open; the document must be handled through the applicable later return process.

When IFF changes the practical choice
Suppose a business has many B2B invoices in the first two months of every quarter and customers expect those invoices to be visible promptly. QRMP remains possible, but the business must operate a monthly invoice-selection and IFF calendar. If that extra control is more complicated than filing GSTR-1 monthly, the nominal reduction in main returns may not be a real administrative saving.
Due dates you must put on the calendar
Monthly GSTR-1
GST Portal guidance states that monthly GSTR-1 is due on the 11th day of the succeeding month, subject to government extensions. This is the standing GSTR-1 date, not a universal deadline for every GST form or payment.
Quarterly GSTR-1
For quarterly filers, the standing GSTR-1 due date is the 13th of the month after the quarter ends, again subject to extensions. Confirm the exact period’s notification before relying on the standing date.
GSTR-3B and payments
The GSTR-1 FAQ dates above do not establish the due date for GSTR-3B or the monthly QRMP challan. Check the current GST Portal schedule for the relevant tax period, registration and state. Build a separate reminder for payment and for the quarterly GSTR-3B rather than assuming that all obligations share the GSTR-1 date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNil periods still require attention
The GST Portal says GSTR-1 is required even when there is no business activity in the tax period, unless the taxpayer belongs to a class that is not required to file that form. A quiet month or quarter is not a reason to ignore the filing obligation.
How to select or change your frequency
- Check the GSTIN profile. Sign in to the GST Portal and confirm the taxpayer category, registration details and whether the QRMP option is displayed for the relevant quarter.
- Validate the prerequisites. Check PAN-level aggregate turnover for the current and preceding financial year, confirm that the latest due GSTR-3B is filed, and verify that the GSTIN is liable for both GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.
- Review the quarter-specific window. QRMP selection is made through the portal’s quarter-specific option. Do not assume that a selection window is open merely because you used QRMP previously.
- Choose the cadence for each GSTIN. Multiple GSTINs linked to one PAN may choose different frequencies. Make the decision registration by registration, based on each location’s customers, invoices and staff workflow.
- Set the payment and return calendar. For QRMP, schedule monthly challan payments, IFF deadlines for the first two months if needed, and the quarterly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. For monthly filing, schedule each month’s GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and payment tasks.
- Recheck after material changes. A change in turnover, filing status or eligibility can affect the option. Review the live portal before each selection period and when a registration’s circumstances change.
The QRMP FAQ says a selected frequency generally continues in later quarters unless it is changed or eligibility ceases. Treat that as a continuing setting to monitor, not as a permanent exemption from checking the portal.

Common mistakes and how to prevent them
Mistake: treating the ₹5 crore figure as a business-level shortcut
The scheme uses PAN-level aggregate turnover and also has filing-status and registration conditions. Maintain a consolidated view of registrations under the PAN and confirm the portal’s eligibility result.
Mistake: stopping monthly payments after choosing QRMP
QRMP does not convert tax payments into a single quarter-end payment. Keep a monthly challan checklist and reconcile the electronic cash ledger before each payment.
Mistake: assuming IFF covers all invoices
IFF is limited to specified B2B documents, registered credit or debit notes and amendments. It is optional and does not replace all GSTR-1 tables. Use the official table coverage in the IFF guidance before promising a customer that a document will be furnished through IFF.
Mistake: missing the IFF date because the main return is quarterly
The IFF deadline is the 13th of the succeeding month for the first and second months of the quarter. Put those dates on a separate calendar; the quarterly GSTR-1 deadline does not keep an IFF window open.
Mistake: carrying forward an old due date
Standing dates can be extended by government notification. Check the current GST Portal notice for the specific tax period instead of relying on a historical example or an old internal calendar.
Mistake: ignoring a nil period
GSTR-1 filing can still be required when there is no business activity. Confirm whether the registration belongs to an exempt category; otherwise complete the required nil filing.
Worked decision examples
Small service business with few B2B customers
An eligible service business with stable monthly sales, limited invoice volume and no customer asking for interim invoice visibility may prefer QRMP. Its process still needs monthly tax-payment calculations and a quarterly close, but it may avoid preparing two main returns in each of the first two months.

Distributor whose customers reconcile monthly
A distributor whose registered customers expect purchase invoices to appear promptly may prefer monthly filing. QRMP could work only if the team reliably submits eligible documents through IFF by the 13th of the following month. If IFF selection and monitoring create more work than monthly GSTR-1, monthly filing is the more straightforward process.
Business with several GSTINs under one PAN
The QRMP FAQ allows GSTINs associated with the same PAN to choose different frequencies. One registration can use QRMP while another files monthly, provided each independently meets the applicable conditions and the portal offers the chosen option. Keep separate calendars and reconciliations so that one GSTIN’s cadence is not mistakenly applied to another.
When to obtain professional help
Consider a qualified GST practitioner when turnover aggregation across registrations is unclear, a new registration does not fit neatly into the FAQ wording, return defaults are missing on the portal, or your business has complex amendments and inter-state or B2B documentation. Professional assistance is particularly useful when a missed filing or payment could affect several GSTINs under the same PAN.
For routine preparation, the GST Portal describes online entry, its Returns Offline Tool and third-party applications through GST Suvidha Providers as possible ways to prepare GSTR-1. Verify the current tool version and provider availability yourself; the filing-frequency decision does not depend on any particular software brand.
Bottom line
Start with the GSTIN, not a generic turnover slogan: confirm the taxpayer category, PAN-level turnover, latest GSTR-3B status and the QRMP option shown on the live portal. Choose QRMP when fewer main returns genuinely simplify your work and you can make monthly challan payments and, where necessary, timely IFF submissions. Choose monthly filing when continuous B2B reporting, a monthly close or simpler calendar control matters more than reducing the number of formal returns.
Recheck current GST Portal dates and eligibility for every selection period because notifications, extensions and registration facts can change.
