How to Choose the Right Bond ETF Duration for Interest-Rate Risk

Choose a bond ETF’s duration from the date you need the money, the loss you can withstand, and whether the fund’s credit exposure fits your plan—not from its yield alone. As a practical starting point, duration of 3.5 years or less is low interest-rate sensitivity, more than 3.5 and less than 6 years is medium, and 6 years or more is high under Vanguard’s taxable-bond-fund framework. A one-percentage-point rise in yields can reduce an ETF’s price by approximately its duration percentage before convexity and other effects, so an ETF with five years of duration might fall about 5% in that simplified scenario.

Use short duration when a near-term cash need or forced sale makes temporary losses unacceptable; consider intermediate duration for a multi-year horizon and moderate volatility tolerance; use long or extended duration only when you deliberately accept large mark-to-market swings or are matching a long-dated liability. Always verify the fund’s current effective duration, maturity, convexity, credit exposure, yield, fees and trading liquidity because those figures change.

What bond ETF duration measures

Duration is the first-order estimate of how much a bond ETF’s price changes when market yields move. FINRA defines duration risk as the sensitivity of a bond’s price to a one-percentage-point change in interest rates. If an ETF has an effective duration of 4 years, a 1 percentage point increase in its relevant yields implies an approximate 4% price decline; a 1 percentage point decrease implies an approximate 4% gain. The estimate is not a guarantee, and the ETF’s total return also includes coupon income, distributions, fees, credit-spread changes and other portfolio effects.

Why longer duration moves more

Longer-maturity bonds return more of their cash flows farther in the future. When market yields reset, the present value of those distant payments changes more than the value of near-term payments. Consequently, long-term bond ETFs generally rise more when yields fall and decline more when yields rise than short-term ETFs. Vanguard’s VGLT summary prospectus states that during rising-rate periods bond prices may decline and that longer-term bond prices are more sensitive to rate changes than shorter-term bond prices.

Duration is not the same as maturity

Maturity is the date on which a bond is scheduled to repay principal. Duration is a weighted measure of the timing of all cash flows, including coupons, and is therefore the more useful first estimate of price sensitivity. Two funds can have similar average maturities but different durations if their coupons, holdings or embedded features differ. For every candidate ETF, read the current effective-duration figure rather than selecting solely from a label such as “10-year” or “long-term.”

The one-percent rule and its limits

The common approximation is:

Estimated percentage price change ≈ −effective duration × change in yield.

Use decimal form for the calculation: 5.55 years × a 0.01 yield increase implies about a 5.55% price decline. This is a first-order estimate before convexity. The actual result can differ because yield changes are not uniform across maturities, the fund’s holdings roll down the curve, coupons are reinvested, and credit spreads or flows move at the same time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Convexity improves the estimate for large moves

Convexity describes how duration itself changes as yields move. For a plain-vanilla bond, positive convexity usually means the price gain from a large yield decline is somewhat greater than the duration-only estimate and the loss from an equally large yield increase is somewhat smaller. Convexity does not eliminate risk, and it cannot turn a long-duration fund into a short-duration holding. Check the fund’s reported convexity when comparing otherwise similar ETFs.

Duration bands: low, medium and high sensitivity

Vanguard’s taxable-fund framework uses these practical bands. They are labels for interest-rate sensitivity, not predictions of future returns or guarantees against losses.

Effective-duration range Sensitivity label Typical use case What a 1 percentage-point yield rise implies, approximately
3.5 years or less Low Near-term spending, emergency reserves held outside cash, or investors with little tolerance for temporary declines Price decline of roughly 3.5% or less before convexity and other effects
Greater than 3.5 and less than 6 years Medium Multi-year goals where some interim volatility is acceptable Price decline of roughly 3.5% to 6%
6 years or more High Long horizons or deliberate exposure to larger rate moves Price decline of roughly 6% or more

The bands help you screen funds, but they do not replace a cash-flow analysis. A five-year duration can still be inappropriate for money needed next year, while a 10-year duration may fit an investor whose liability is genuinely far in the future and who can hold through volatility.

How long should your bond ETF duration be?

1. Set the risk budget and cash-flow horizon

Start with the date and amount of each withdrawal, not the fund’s distribution yield. Ask whether a temporary price loss would force you to sell. If the answer is yes, use cash or a low-duration range for that portion of the portfolio. A short horizon leaves little time for coupon income or a later rate decline to offset a mark-to-market loss.

For a goal several years away, an intermediate-duration ETF can provide more income and diversification than a very short fund while keeping rate sensitivity below long-duration levels. A long horizon allows more time for bonds to mature and for coupons to compound, but it does not make a long-duration ETF “safe” in the interim. You must be able to tolerate the drawdown without abandoning the plan.

2. Match duration to liabilities when appropriate

Matching the timing of assets and liabilities can reduce the risk that a rate move changes the value of both sides differently. Long-duration Treasury exposure may be useful for a liability many years away, such as a known future payment, because its sensitivity can offset changes in the present value of that liability. This is a liability-matching decision, not a blanket recommendation to buy the longest fund available.

Vanguard’s materials for EDV describe it as primarily intended for investors matching long-term liabilities and warn that its interest-rate risk is very high or extremely high. If you do not have a long-dated liability or the capacity to absorb large losses, an extended-duration fund is generally a poor default holding.

3. Compare effective duration, maturity and convexity

Record each candidate’s effective duration, weighted-average maturity and convexity from its current fund page or prospectus. Effective duration incorporates the timing of expected cash flows and, where relevant, the effect of changes in embedded options. Weighted-average maturity gives useful context about when principal is scheduled to be repaid, but it is not a substitute for duration. Convexity helps explain why actual results diverge from the one-percent approximation during large yield moves.

4. Decide how much credit risk you want

A Treasury ETF’s principal market risk is usually interest-rate sensitivity, although it can still experience liquidity and tracking effects. Corporate, municipal and high-yield ETFs add issuer-spread risk: investors may demand more yield from those borrowers even when Treasury yields are unchanged. They also add default and downgrade risk. A higher distribution yield may be compensation for those risks rather than a free improvement in return.

When the objective is to manage interest-rate risk, compare funds with similar credit quality first. Otherwise, a fund that appears to have the “right” duration may behave differently because its credit spreads widen during an economic slowdown.

5. Check yield after fees, not yield alone

Yield changes as prices, coupons and portfolio holdings change. Compare the same yield convention and look at the expense ratio before deciding that one fund is more attractive. A higher yield from a longer-duration or lower-credit-quality fund cannot be compared directly with a lower yield from a short Treasury fund without acknowledging the additional risks. Review the current prospectus for distribution methodology and fee information.

6. Verify liquidity and trading costs

Look at assets, average trading volume and the bid-ask spread. A narrow spread reduces the cost of entering or exiting, while a wide spread can matter more than a small difference in expense ratios if you trade frequently or during stressed markets. Use limit orders when appropriate, and remember that an ETF’s market price can temporarily differ from its net asset value.

7. Recheck date-stamped statistics

Duration, maturity, convexity, yield and holdings move as bonds mature, the manager trades and market yields change. GOVT reported an effective duration of 5.55 years, weighted-average maturity of 7.52 years and convexity of 0.67 as of September 9, 2026. VGLT reported an average duration of 13.4 years as of July 31, 2026. Those figures describe the portfolios on those dates; they are not permanent classifications. Short-, intermediate- and long-term Treasury ETFs compared

Duration category Rate sensitivity Potential role Examples in this category or discussion Main trade-off
Short term Lower than intermediate and long funds Cash-flow needs in the next few years and investors prioritizing stability A short Treasury ETF selected after checking its current effective duration Less price volatility, but usually less benefit if rates fall sharply and potentially lower income
Intermediate term Moderate Core bond allocation for a multi-year horizon VGIT; GOVT is broad Treasury exposure with 5.55 years effective duration as of September 9, 2026 Meaningful rate exposure without the extreme swings of extended duration
Long term High Long-dated liabilities or investors intentionally seeking strong rate sensitivity VGLT, with 13.4 years average duration as of July 31, 2026; TLT, concentrated in 20-plus-year Treasuries Large losses are possible when yields rise
Extended duration Very high or extremely high Specialized liability matching or a deliberate rate view EDV, which primarily uses Treasury STRIPS and has expected duration above 20 years Very large mark-to-market swings and limited suitability for near-term spending

The examples illustrate different exposures, not a ranking. GOVT’s broad Treasury range can have a different behavior from a concentrated 20-plus-year fund even if both are described generally as Treasury ETFs. Read the current holdings and duration before treating a ticker as a fixed category.

How much could a bond ETF fall if yields rise 1%?

The following scenarios apply the duration-only approximation to the date-stamped figures above. They are not forecasts and exclude coupon income, convexity, spread changes, fees and tracking differences.

ETF or hypothetical duration Duration used Yield move Approximate price effect Interpretation
Hypothetical low-duration ETF 3 years +1 percentage point About −3% A modest decline can still matter if you must sell immediately
GOVT (reported September 9, 2026) 5.55 years effective duration +1 percentage point About −5.55% Intermediate sensitivity; actual return will differ
Hypothetical 8-year ETF 8 years +1 percentage point About −8% High sensitivity under the Vanguard bands
VGLT (reported July 31, 2026) 13.4 years average duration +1 percentage point About −13.4% Long-duration exposure can produce a double-digit decline
EDV-style extended duration More than 20 years expected duration +1 percentage point More than −20% in the duration-only approximation Specialized exposure with very high or extremely high rate risk

A yield move of less than 1% scales approximately in proportion: a 0.25 percentage-point increase applied to a five-year duration suggests about a 1.25% price decline before other effects. In practice, the yield curve can steepen or flatten rather than move in parallel, so a fund’s holdings at different maturities will not all respond identically.

When a long-duration ETF can make sense

Long duration is rational when you have a reason to want greater sensitivity, not simply because the fund displays a higher yield. An investor funding a distant, relatively certain liability may choose long Treasuries to align asset and liability rate exposure. An investor with a strong, deliberate view that yields will fall may also accept the volatility, but that is a market-timing decision with substantial downside.

Long-duration funds can deliver strong gains when yields fall, yet the reverse is equally important: a rise in yields can produce a large decline even when the Treasury issuer remains fully creditworthy. The price can remain below your purchase price for an extended period. Holding to a fund’s average maturity does not guarantee recovery at a particular date because an ETF continually replaces maturing bonds and trades at a market price.

Risks duration does not capture

Credit-spread and default risk

Corporate and high-yield funds can fall because investors demand more compensation for borrower risk. This spread widening can overwhelm the effect predicted by Treasury duration. Check credit ratings, sector concentration and the share of assets outside government securities.

Yield-curve risk

Duration summarizes a parallel shift, but the two-year, five-year and 30-year parts of the curve can move by different amounts. A fund concentrated in one maturity area may outperform or underperform the duration estimate when the curve twists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinvestment and income risk

When rates fall, future coupons and maturing principal may be reinvested at lower yields. When rates rise, reinvestment opportunities improve, but the existing ETF price may decline first. Distribution yield is therefore not a fixed return promise.

Liquidity, tracking and market-price risk

An ETF can trade above or below its net asset value, particularly during market stress. Thinly traded holdings can widen the fund’s spread and increase tracking differences. Review the creation-and-redemption structure, assets and historical spread before placing a large order.

Inflation and purchasing-power risk

Nominal Treasury payments may lose purchasing power if inflation remains high. A fund with low duration can reduce rate volatility but does not automatically protect real spending power. Decide separately whether you need inflation-linked securities or other assets.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Write down the liability date. List when the money will be spent and whether the date is flexible.
  2. Set a maximum tolerable temporary loss. Translate that limit into a duration range using the one-percent approximation, then allow room for larger rate moves and credit effects.
  3. Choose the credit universe. Decide whether you want Treasuries only or are willing to accept corporate, municipal or high-yield spread and default risk.
  4. Compare effective duration. Use the current figure, not the fund name or maturity label.
  5. Review maturity and convexity. Confirm that the cash-flow profile and convexity are consistent with your objective.
  6. Compare yield after fees. Use the same yield definition and note that yield changes over time.
  7. Check liquidity. Review assets, trading volume and bid-ask spread; plan how you will place the order.
  8. Read the prospectus. Confirm the fund’s strategy, risks, distribution policy and tax information.
  9. Record the “as of” date. Save the duration and holdings snapshot so you know what you purchased.
  10. Set a review rule. Recheck the data when your liability changes, the fund changes strategy or market conditions materially shift.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake: choosing by yield alone

Correction: Compare duration and credit quality first. A higher yield may simply compensate for more rate, spread or default risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming a Treasury ETF cannot lose much

Correction: Separate credit safety from price stability. A Treasury fund can have minimal default risk and still experience a substantial duration-driven decline.

Mistake: treating maturity as duration

Correction: Use effective duration for the sensitivity estimate and maturity as supporting context.

Mistake: using a long fund for a near-term bill

Correction: Match the asset’s duration to the spending date or keep near-term spending in cash and low-duration holdings.

Mistake: relying on an old fact sheet

Correction: Confirm the current “as of” date for duration, yield, maturity, convexity and holdings immediately before trading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: ignoring the spread when selling

Correction: Check normal and stressed bid-ask spreads, use limit orders when suitable and avoid assuming the last quoted price is your executable price.

Taxes, account location and implementation

Tax treatment depends on the account type, your jurisdiction and the source of the ETF’s income. Treasury interest may receive different state-tax treatment from corporate or municipal income, while capital gains and distributions can have separate consequences. Read the fund’s tax disclosures and consult a qualified tax professional for your situation rather than comparing pre-tax yields as if they were identical.

In a taxable account, keep records of purchase price, distributions and sales. In a retirement account, taxes may be deferred or handled differently, but the market-value risk from duration is unchanged. Account location can affect after-tax results; it does not change the ETF’s effective duration.

How to monitor and rebalance duration

Duration drifts as time passes, bonds mature and the manager changes holdings. A fund may move from one sensitivity band to another without changing its ticker. Review the current statistic at the interval appropriate to your liability—more often when a large payment is approaching or rates are unusually volatile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebalance based on your written target range rather than reacting to a single market headline. If your cash-flow date moves closer, gradually shorten the duration of the assets assigned to that payment. If the liability is extended and your risk capacity remains intact, you may maintain a longer target, but document why the added volatility is acceptable.

A decision framework for the three common questions

“What duration is safest if rates rise?”

All else equal, the lowest duration has the smallest price sensitivity to a rate increase. Safety is relative: low duration reduces interest-rate loss but may offer less income and less gain if rates fall. For money needed soon, prioritize a low-duration range or cash over reaching for yield.

“Should I use a short-, intermediate- or long-term Treasury ETF?”

Use short term for near-term spending or a low loss budget, intermediate term for a multi-year core allocation, and long term only for a long horizon, a liability match or a deliberate willingness to accept large swings. Confirm the actual effective duration because category names are broad.

“How much will my bond ETF fall if yields rise 1%?”

Multiply the ETF’s current effective duration by one percentage point for a rough price-change estimate, then expect the realized return to differ because of convexity, coupon income, curve shape, credit spreads, fees and trading effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final selection test

Before buying, you should be able to state the fund’s current effective duration, the approximate loss you would face under a 1 percentage-point yield rise, the date you need the money, the fund’s credit exposure, its convexity and maturity context, and the costs of trading and owning it. If any answer is unclear, choose a simpler, lower-duration option or obtain the missing information from the current prospectus. The right duration is the one that fits your liability and loss tolerance while leaving you able to hold through the rate cycle.
