Choose tax software by tax year, filing status, required forms, and e-file availability—not by the headline “complex return” label. First determine whether you have an unfiled late return, a return covered by an extension, or an already-filed return that needs correction. Then verify that the exact edition can prepare that year, transmit it now, handle your state, and provide the level of help you need.
For a late return, software can organize and calculate the filing, but it does not erase missed deadlines or change the rule that an extension gives more time to file, not to pay. For a return involving business activity, investments, rentals, foreign matters, multiple states, or uncertainty about forms, compare supported forms and professional assistance before you buy.

Start by identifying what kind of return you have
The correct software path depends on the return’s status. Do not begin by selecting a package based only on the word “late” or “complex.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn unfiled prior-year return
If you never submitted the return, you need software that supports the exact tax year and a method to deliver it. A current online product may prepare only the current tax year, while a year-specific desktop edition may be required for an older return. Some providers also limit prior-year electronic filing to years supported by the IRS Modernized e-File system.
#1 Best Overall
A return covered by a timely extension
An extension changes the filing deadline, not the payment deadline. IRS guidance for calendar-year 2025 individual returns set April 15, 2026 as the payment deadline and October 15, 2026 as the extended federal filing date when a valid extension request was submitted on time. Those dates have passed; use the IRS instructions for the tax year you are filing rather than assuming a new extension is available.
The IRS describes the rule plainly: “An extension provides extra time to file, not additional time to pay.” An extension requested after the original deadline should not be described as making a late return timely.
An already-filed return that needs correction
If the IRS already received an original return, do not start a second original return in tax software. A qualifying change to filing status, income, deductions, credits, dependents, or tax liability generally uses Form 1040-X, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. The IRS generally allows a refund claim within three years of filing the original return or two years of paying the tax, whichever is later, although special rules apply to some claims. A state amendment may be required separately.

| Your situation | Software question | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Never filed a prior-year return | Can this edition prepare that exact year? | Whether it can e-file that year now; if not, printing, signing, mailing, and payment instructions |
| Filed a timely extension | Can it prepare the extended year and reflect payments or extension data? | The applicable federal and state deadlines and whether any balance was paid |
| Already filed; information changed | Does it support Form 1040-X for that year? | Whether the IRS says an amendment is required and whether the state return also must be amended |
Pin down the tax year and filing status before comparing products
Write down the year of the income
The tax year is the year in which you earned the income, not necessarily the year in which you are filing. Record the year, filing status, state or states involved, and whether the return is original, extended, or amended. This prevents buying a current-year web product for an older return.
Understand provider-specific prior-year rules
Prior-year availability is not uniform:
- TurboTax support says prior-year self-preparation uses that year’s Desktop software, while its online and mobile self-preparation filing is for the current tax year.
- H&R Block says a prior-year return requires the software version created for the specific year.
- TaxAct says its software supports the current year and two prior years when the IRS Modernized e-File system supports those years.
These are provider statements, not a universal industry rule. Confirm the exact year, edition, and transmission status immediately before purchase. A product can let you prepare or print a historical return without accepting an electronic submission for it.
Build a form inventory before choosing an edition
Gather every document and schedule that may belong on the return. The list is a comparison checklist, not a conclusion that every item applies to you.

State and multistate details
List every state in which you lived, worked, owned property, or earned income. Federal support does not guarantee state preparation or state electronic filing. A return may require a nonresident state form, a part-year allocation, or an amendment in one or more states.

Search the exact edition’s form and schedule list for every item in your inventory. “Handles complex returns” is not a sufficient answer. The IRS says Free File partners set their own eligibility rules, and support for a particular form must be confirmed with the chosen partner.
Separate preparation, transmission, and paper filing
Preparation
Preparation means entering information, calculating tax, and producing a completed return. Desktop software may still perform this task for a year that cannot be electronically transmitted.
Electronic transmission
Ask whether the exact tax year can be e-filed now. TaxAct conditions prior-year e-file availability on IRS Modernized e-File support for that year. IRS system availability can change, so check close to filing rather than relying on an old product description.
Paper filing when e-file is unavailable
If electronic filing is not offered, confirm that the software prints every required federal and state form, provides signature and mailing instructions, and tells you where to send payment. Keep a complete copy and proof of mailing. Do not assume the address used for a current-year return applies to an older year.

Guided self-service
Guided software asks questions and maps answers to forms. It can be efficient when your form inventory is familiar and you can review the output. It does not transfer responsibility for the accuracy of facts you enter.

Live or expert assistance
Some products offer access to an expert or a review option. Compare what that service actually includes: answers during data entry, a final review, preparation by another person, or representation after filing. Check whether the service covers the tax year and forms you need.
Professional preparation
A tax professional is often the safer route when you cannot map your documents to forms, have several states, foreign reporting, complicated business or rental activity, a notice or audit issue, or a substantial late balance. Ask how the preparer handles prior-year returns, amendments, electronic authorization, records, and payment of tax.
The IRS identifies professional preparation as a filing route and also offers free VITA and TCE assistance to eligible taxpayers. Eligibility and scope vary by program and location.
Check free options before paying
IRS Free File guided software
For tax year 2025, the IRS states that guided Free File software is available to taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, subject to additional criteria set by each participating provider. Some complex situations involving credits, deductions, or business expenses may be supported, but partner rules and form coverage differ. Start at the IRS Free File portal (IRS.gov/freefile) so you see the applicable eligibility terms rather than assuming a provider’s direct site offers the same arrangement.
Free File Fillable Forms
Fillable Forms are intended for taxpayers comfortable preparing their own federal forms. They provide less guidance and do not substitute for checking instructions, calculations, state requirements, or unusual schedules.
VITA and TCE
VITA and TCE can provide no-cost help to eligible taxpayers. These programs may be especially useful when you want a person to review a return but do not need full commercial preparation. Confirm that the site handles your tax year and form types before arriving.

Free extension filing
The IRS says extension requests can be made through Free File regardless of income eligibility for a free return. That does not extend the time to pay and does not make a request submitted after the deadline timely.

Compare total cost, not the advertised starting price
Exact current prices and a complete vendor-by-vendor form matrix are not established here, so verify the checkout terms for the edition and tax year you need. Build the total from every component:
| Cost component | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Federal preparation | Is the exact tax year included, or is an older desktop edition a separate purchase? |
| State preparation | Is state preparation included, sold separately, or unavailable for your state? |
| State e-file | Is electronic submission an additional charge, and does it work for this year? |
| Multiple returns | Are there limits on the number of federal or state returns? |
| Help or review | What does an expert, review, or full-service add-on cover, and does it include your forms? |
| Delivery method | If e-file is unavailable, does the product provide printable forms and current mailing guidance? |
Do not call one provider cheaper or better without checking these terms for the same year, forms, state filings, and help level.
Verify device and account requirements
Desktop and web products can have different operating-system, browser, account, and internet requirements. The current evidence does not establish a universal operating-system list, so read the edition’s technical requirements before buying. Confirm that you can:
- Install or access the product on the device you will use throughout preparation.
- Import documents or prior-year data in the format that edition accepts.
- Save, print, and retrieve a complete copy of the return.
- Receive and retain e-file acceptance or rejection notices.
- Access the account or installation later if the IRS or a state requests clarification.
A practical selection and filing workflow
- Write the tax year and status. Mark the return as unfiled, extended, or amended, and record every state involved.
- Collect source documents. Gather income statements, deduction and credit records, payment confirmations, prior returns, and IRS or state notices.
- Create the form inventory. List likely federal schedules, state forms, carryovers, and foreign or multistate items.
- Check free routes first. Review IRS Free File eligibility, Fillable Forms, and VITA/TCE availability for your facts.
- Search the exact product year. Confirm whether you need a year-specific desktop edition, a current online product, or a provider’s stated prior-year route.
- Verify form support. Match every item in your inventory to the edition’s supported-form list, including state forms.
- Verify transmission. Ask whether that year is currently accepted for e-file. If not, obtain printing, signature, mailing, and payment instructions.
- Price the complete route. Add federal, state, e-file, multiple-return, and assistance charges before deciding.
- Choose the help level. Use self-service only if you can review the return; select expert or professional help when the form map or legal issue is uncertain.
- File and retain evidence. Save the signed return, source records, payment confirmation, e-file acceptance, or certified-mail proof.
Common late-return problems and fixes
You bought current software for an old year
Stop before filing. Obtain the edition made for the required year or use a preparer who can access it. Re-entering an old return into a current-year product can produce the wrong forms and calculations.
The software prepares the return but will not e-file it
Check whether the IRS Modernized e-File system still accepts that year. If it does not, print and mail according to the product and IRS instructions, or use a professional preparer with an appropriate filing route.

You assumed an extension eliminated the balance due
Reconcile withholding, estimated payments, and any extension payment. An extension changes filing time only; interest and other consequences can depend on the facts and the applicable IRS rules.
You are about to submit a second original return
If an original return was already accepted, determine whether the change belongs on Form 1040-X. Review the IRS amended-return instructions and the relevant state rules before sending anything.
A “complex” label does not match your forms
Return to the form inventory. A product may support some business expenses or credits yet lack a specific partnership, foreign, rental, or state schedule. Choose an edition that lists the required forms or move to professional help.

Software is not automatically the lower-risk option. Get professional help when the cost of an error, missed schedule, or late correction is greater than the preparation fee. Strong reasons include:
- Several businesses, rentals, partnerships, trusts, or investment transactions.
- Foreign income, accounts, assets, or tax credits.
- Multiple-state residency or income allocation.
- Prior-year returns missing, rejected, or needing reconstruction.
- IRS or state notices, collection activity, audit questions, or an uncertain filing obligation.
- Inability to determine whether a change requires an original, superseding, or amended return.
Ask the preparer for the exact tax years they handle, the forms included, the filing method, total federal and state fees, document-retention policy, and who answers questions after submission.
What the software can and cannot do
The IRS says electronic filing reduces errors because tax software performs calculations, flags common mistakes, and prompts users for missing information. That is a useful safeguard, but it does not verify that your facts are complete, that a form is supported, or that a late-payment consequence is resolved. You remain responsible for selecting the correct year, entering accurate information, meeting payment obligations, and responding to IRS or state notices.
