Choose cryptocurrency tax software for South Korea by verifying each exchange and wallet connection, then proving that the imported history is complete and reconciles before you trust any calculation. The National Tax Service (NTS) currently schedules separate taxation of virtual-asset transfers or lending from January 1, 2027. Its guidance calculates income as consideration received minus actual acquisition cost and incidental expenses. Software can organize records and calculate based on your inputs, but neither the documented Koinly nor CoinTracking pages establish an NTS-approved Korean filing form. Treat the result as a working report for review by a Korean tax professional, not as automatic proof of compliance.

What should you check before choosing crypto tax software in South Korea?

Start with your actual accounts, not a vendor’s general claim that it “supports Korea.” Write down every Korean exchange, overseas exchange, self-custody wallet, chain, and activity type you use. Then check the current integration directory for the exact account and import method.

  • Exchange coverage: Confirm the named exchange and whether the connection is a supported API, CSV, Excel file, or another export.
  • Wallet and chain coverage: Check every self-custody address and blockchain separately. A product that imports one chain may not import another.
  • History range: Verify that the tool can accept all years you need, including records from accounts you have closed.
  • Transaction detail: Make sure deposits, withdrawals, trades, fees, transfers, and account metadata are retained rather than reduced to a balance.
  • Reviewability: Require an itemized transaction list, cost-basis assumptions, and a way to identify unmatched or duplicated entries.
  • Ambiguous activity: Find out how it labels staking, lending, airdrops, hard forks, liquidity or other non-trade receipts. Korean guidance does not yet provide clear criteria for several of these categories.

Do not select a product solely because it displays a Korean currency, a country selector, or a generic “tax report” button. Those features do not establish that the output is an NTS form or that the software’s classifications match your facts.

What is the South Korean crypto-tax timetable you are preparing for?

In December 2024, an amendment to the Income Tax Act postponed virtual-asset income taxation by two years. Under current NTS guidance, transfers or lending beginning January 1, 2027 are scheduled to be taxed separately as other income. The taxable amount is described as the consideration from the transfer or lending, less actual acquisition cost and incidental expenses.

The law defines covered virtual assets by reference to the Act on the Protection of Virtual Asset Users. That definition matters when deciding which records to import; do not assume that every token, reward, derivative, or platform credit receives identical treatment.

Registered virtual-asset service providers must submit transaction statements and aggregate reports for transactions from January 1, 2027. Separately, information required for corporate tax has applied to transactions from January 1, 2023. These provider reports may help the authorities, but they do not replace your own records or prove that a third-party software report is accepted for an individual filing.

The National Assembly Budget Office’s September 17, 2026 report highlights practical problems that software cannot solve by itself: acquisition costs can be difficult to reconstruct across multiple accounts, and the law lacks clear criteria for returns from staking, lending, hard forks, and airdrops. Put a written explanation beside every manual classification and have a Korean adviser review it.

Which crypto tax software supports Upbit?

Koinly documents an Upbit transaction-history import by file or CSV, and its country list includes South Korea. That establishes a documented ingestion route, not a direct Upbit API, an NTS-approved report, or Korean filing-form support.

How to import Upbit records safely

  1. In Upbit, download the transaction-history export for the complete period you need. Save the original file without editing it.
  2. In Koinly, choose the Upbit wallet or exchange connection and select the file/CSV import path documented for Upbit. Do not assume an API option is available; Koinly’s general instructions show API sync only when a particular exchange API is supported.
  3. Record the export’s coverage dates and file name. If you use a file workflow, repeat the export and import when new trades occur; a one-time upload does not update itself.
  4. After import, compare deposits, withdrawals, trades, fees, and closing balances with Upbit’s own statements. Investigate duplicates, missing cost basis, and transfers that do not match a destination wallet.
  5. Export the resulting transaction list and exception report for your adviser. Keep it with the unchanged Upbit file.

Koinly states that its output reflects errors in incomplete or incorrect input and tells users to check completeness and transaction tagging. A country selector therefore should be treated as a starting point for calculation settings, not as a compliance certification.

Can I import Bithumb transactions by CSV?

Yes. CoinTracking documents a Bithumb-specific workflow in which you export transaction history as a CSV and upload it. The documentation establishes CSV ingestion only; it does not establish a Korean-specific filing form, NTS approval, or universal API coverage for Korean exchanges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checks after a Bithumb upload

  • Confirm that the Bithumb export includes the full date range and every account type you used.
  • Check whether deposits and withdrawals are represented separately from trades and whether fees appear as their own entries.
  • Match each transfer to the receiving exchange or wallet. An exchange withdrawal and a wallet deposit should not become two taxable disposals merely because they arrived as separate rows.
  • Compare the software’s imported totals with Bithumb’s account statements and investigate any difference before generating a report.
  • Save the original CSV and the uploaded version if you had to change a file-format setting; document any manual edits.

“CSV import” describes how data enters the system. It does not say how Korean law treats a transaction or whether an authority will accept the resulting document.

How do API connections differ from CSV and Excel imports?

An API connection can retrieve newer activity automatically when the exchange exposes a supported interface. A CSV or Excel workflow is a file snapshot that must be repeated for subsequent activity. The difference affects maintenance and the risk of silently missing transactions.

Connection type What it can do What you must verify
Supported API May synchronize new transactions after authorization. Whether the specific Korean exchange, account type, and transaction categories are supported; API permissions and date limits.
CSV or Excel file Imports the rows contained in the exported file. Coverage dates, column mapping, repeated uploads for new activity, and preservation of fees and transfer IDs.
Manual entry Can record an item absent from an exchange export. Original evidence, valuation time, cost basis, and a written explanation for the adjustment.

Never infer API support from the existence of a CSV guide. For Upbit, the documented Koinly route is file/CSV import. For Bithumb, the documented CoinTracking route is CSV upload. Check the live integration page immediately before setup because exchange permissions and supported fields can change.

How do you reconcile exchanges and self-custody wallets?

Reconciliation is the quality-control step that turns an imported spreadsheet into evidence you can explain. Complete it before relying on a gain, loss, or income figure.

Build an account inventory

List every Upbit, Bithumb, overseas exchange, brokerage-like platform, hardware wallet, software wallet, and chain address. Include accounts you no longer use. Note the owner, currency, date opened, date closed, and export available for each.

Collect source records

Download original exchange exports, deposit and withdrawal histories, fee schedules, staking or lending statements, and wallet transaction data. Keep the dates covered by each export. A wallet address alone may not explain an off-chain exchange movement, so retain both sides of every transfer.

Match movements

Pair an exchange withdrawal with the corresponding wallet deposit, or one exchange’s withdrawal with another’s deposit. Use transaction hashes, timestamps, asset quantities, and network fees. Mark unmatched items rather than forcing a match.

Investigate exceptions

  • Duplicate: The same trade appears in an API sync and a later CSV upload.
  • Missing cost basis: An asset arrives without the acquisition record from the originating account.
  • Unmatched transfer: A withdrawal has no identifiable destination, perhaps because the destination is an address you control.
  • Balance mismatch: The report’s ending balance differs from the exchange or wallet statement.
  • Unknown disposal: A fee, network conversion, or automated platform action appears as a sale.

Resolve an exception with source evidence or leave it flagged with a written assumption. Koinly’s own guidance warns that calculations inherit errors from incomplete or incorrect input; the same principle applies to any software.

How should wallets, overseas exchanges, and DeFi activity be handled?

Check wallet and chain support one address at a time, then separately handle activity that occurs outside a standard exchange ledger. The Budget Office reports that histories and acquisition costs are difficult to reconstruct across accounts and that overseas platforms complicate visibility.

For a self-custody wallet, verify that the importer recognizes the chain, token contract, internal transfers, gas fees, bridges, wrapped assets, and smart-contract interactions. If a chain is unsupported, export a transaction-history file where possible and preserve the explorer record, transaction hash, and valuation evidence for manual treatment.

For an overseas exchange, obtain its native trade, deposit, withdrawal, fee, and income reports rather than relying on a year-end balance. Check time-zone conversion and the exchange’s definition of a transaction date. Keep the platform’s original currency and convert only under a documented method that your adviser accepts.

DeFi protocols may not label an event as a sale, loan, reward, or transfer. Software may assign a generic category based on token movements. Treat that label as a draft classification and document what happened economically, when you received control, and how value was determined.

How should staking, lending, hard forks, and airdrops be classified?

Do not let a software category settle an unresolved Korean tax question. The National Assembly Budget Office specifically identifies unclear criteria for returns from staking, lending, hard forks, and airdrops.

Staking and lending

Keep the platform statement showing when rewards or interest were credited, the quantity, and the asset valuation used. Separate the original asset principal from the return. Ask a Korean tax professional whether the event is treated as income on receipt, on disposal, or under another rule for your facts.

Hard forks and airdrops

Record the block or distribution date, the wallet or platform that credited the asset, the quantity, and evidence of whether you could transfer or sell it at that time. Do not assign a zero cost or a market value without documenting the rationale.

Manual adjustments

When you change a category, preserve the original imported row, the replacement treatment, the date of the change, and the evidence supporting it. A reviewable audit trail is more useful than a clean-looking total that cannot be explained.

Does this software produce a South Korean tax filing form?

The cited documentation for both Koinly and CoinTracking does not establish an NTS-approved Korean filing form. Koinly’s South Korea country listing and Upbit CSV path show that it can accept certain data and apply a country setting; CoinTracking’s Bithumb page shows CSV ingestion. Neither fact proves official acceptance.

Prefer a report that exposes itemized transactions, assumptions, cost-basis method, income categories, and unresolved exceptions. Give the export and all source files to a Korean tax professional, who can determine whether the figures belong on a particular return, schedule, or supporting statement.

Be especially cautious of marketing language such as “Korea-ready,” “tax compliant,” or “government approved” unless the provider identifies the legal basis, covered form, version, and issuing authority. The available product documentation does not establish those claims.

What records should you retain?

Use a folder structure that lets an adviser trace every report number back to an original record.

  • Original exchange CSV, Excel, PDF, and API exports, with download dates and coverage periods.
  • Wallet addresses, chain names, transaction hashes, and explorer records.
  • Deposits, withdrawals, trades, fees, conversions, and account statements.
  • Staking, lending, airdrop, fork, and other non-trade statements.
  • Exchange and wallet inventory showing which accounts belong to you.
  • Software report exports, reconciliation summaries, exception lists, and version or settings notes.
  • A written log of manual classifications, valuation sources, and adviser decisions.

Keep source files read-only and maintain a separate working copy for any formatting changes. An encrypted storage device can be used as an additional backup, but it is a record-keeping accessory, not a Korean tax requirement.

Which option fits common South Korean account patterns?

Your records Documented starting point What still needs verification
Upbit exports plus other wallets Koinly’s documented Upbit file/CSV import and South Korea country listing. Wallet and chain support, complete history, transfer matching, and whether the final report fits your filing.
Bithumb exports plus other accounts CoinTracking’s documented Bithumb CSV upload. Coverage of other exchanges and wallets, fee and transfer mapping, and Korean tax treatment.
Multiple Korean and overseas exchanges Either product only after checking each exchange’s current integration and import method. Cross-account cost basis, time zones, duplicate prevention, and missing-history recovery.
Heavy staking, lending, forks, or airdrops Any importer that preserves raw events and allows documented manual adjustments. Professional classification because Korean criteria remain unclear for several returns.

This table compares documented data paths, not product quality rankings. A tool with fewer integrations can be safer than a broader tool if it produces a complete, auditable history for your accounts.

What should you do before purchasing or subscribing?

  1. Download a representative export from each exchange and wallet, including an older period with transfers and fees.
  2. Check the provider’s current integration directory for the exact exchange, account type, chain, and import method.
  3. Ask whether historical imports have date or row limits and whether repeated CSV uploads create duplicates.
  4. Confirm that the report can show transaction-level detail, cost basis, fees, transfer matching, and unresolved errors.
  5. Run a small trial import and compare counts and balances with the source statements.
  6. Ask a Korean tax professional whether the proposed categories and report structure support your circumstances.
  7. Only then decide whether the subscription’s workflow saves enough reconciliation time to justify its cost. The supplied documentation does not establish current prices, so obtain the live price for your region and plan.

Why does this choice matter now?

South Korea had 11.13 million domestic virtual-asset exchange user accounts and approximately KRW 5.4 trillion in average daily trading volume in the second half of 2025, according to the National Assembly Budget Office’s 2026 report. At that scale, missing one exchange, wallet, or transfer can materially change a cost-basis calculation.

The scheduled 2027 tax start makes reconstruction time-sensitive. Build the account inventory and preserve exports now, while you can still access old statements and identify the source of each acquisition cost. Software is most useful as a reconciliation and documentation system; it is not a substitute for complete records or Korean professional judgment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need crypto tax software before January 1, 2027?

Not necessarily, but starting record collection before that date reduces the risk of lost exports and unknown acquisition costs. You can preserve source files now and choose calculation software after testing a representative history.

What if an exchange no longer lets me download old transactions?

Ask the exchange for an account statement or data-access request, and preserve wallet records, emails, and prior backups. Do not recreate missing rows from memory; mark the gap and ask an adviser how to substantiate the cost basis.

Can I combine two software products for different exchanges?

You can, but combining outputs creates duplicate and cost-basis risks. Keep one master transaction ledger, document which product supplied each account, and reconcile transfers before using totals.

Should I give my tax adviser the software login?

Usually provide exported reports, raw exchange files, wallet addresses, and an exception log instead of sharing credentials. If access is necessary, use the least-privileged read-only method offered and revoke it after the review.
