How to choose between term and whole-of-life insurance in Australia

Choose term insurance when the financial risk has an end date; investigate whole-of-life only when you need a death benefit for life or already hold a policy with valuable guarantees or cash value. Term life (also called death cover or life cover) pays a lump sum if you die, subject to the contract. Whole-of-life is designed to continue for your lifetime and may include an investment or cash-value component. The label alone does not tell you which is cheaper or better: compare the actual benefit, premium guarantees, exclusions, surrender value and ownership structure.

This guide uses Australian consumer guidance and Australian product terminology. Availability, tax treatment and policy rules differ in other countries.

Start with the risk you need to cover

Work out what would happen financially if you died, then choose the policy structure that matches that risk. A mortgage, young children’s support and other household obligations usually create a need for a defined period. A lifelong estate, dependant or business obligation may create a need that does not expire.

Term cover for a defined financial period

Term cover provides a death benefit during the policy term, subject to its conditions and exclusions. Australian consumer guidance commonly calls this life cover, term life insurance or death cover. It is often used to pay debts, funeral costs and ongoing household expenses when dependants rely on the insured person’s income.

Check the policy’s expiry age or date, renewal terms, conversion rights and what happens if premiums stop. “Term” does not by itself mean that premiums stay level, remain affordable, or that cover can be renewed indefinitely.

Whole-of-life cover for a lifelong need

Whole-of-life insurance is intended to provide cover throughout the insured person’s lifetime, provided the contract remains in force and its premium conditions are met. Investment-type policies can build a cash or surrender value and may include bonuses or other guarantees. The value, charges, guarantees and options are specific to the contract; do not assume that every whole-of-life policy has the same investment performance or exit value.

For an existing policy, the original contract may be more important than the product label. Obtain current benefit, surrender and paid-up figures from the issuer before changing it.

Term versus whole-of-life: the decisions that matter

Issue Term cover Whole-of-life cover Verify in the contract
Duration Applies for the policy term and ends or changes under the policy conditions. Intended to provide cover for the insured’s lifetime, subject to contract conditions and premiums. Expiry date or age, renewal and conversion rights, lapse rules, and the result of stopping premiums.
Typical purpose Protects against a defined period of debt or financial dependency. Addresses a death-benefit need expected to continue for life and may include a cash-value feature. Benefit trigger, amount needed and whether saving should be handled separately.
Cash or surrender value Term insurance is described by the Australian Social Security Guide as insurance without an investment component. Investment-type policies can have an investment component; values depend on the policy terms. Current surrender or termination value, paid-up value, bonuses, guarantees, charges and tax consequences.
Premium path May be age-stepped or otherwise variable; premiums can change annually. Some legacy policies described by AIA Australia mainly used level premiums, but this is not a rule for every contract. Which amounts are guaranteed, permitted annual increases, indexation and the projected cost over the holding period.
Availability Available in the consumer market and through super, subject to provider and fund rules. Some Australian products are legacy or closed to new business; limited conversion routes may exist. Whether a new application or a particular conversion is actually available from the issuer.
Ownership and claims Can be owned directly or through super, with different beneficiary and claims arrangements. Older ownership, paid-up status and accumulated value can make replacement consequential. Policy owner, beneficiaries, estate or trustee process, exclusions and claim definitions.

Estimate how much cover your family would need

Begin with the financial gap created by death, not a salary multiple. Moneysmart’s life insurance calculator separates immediate needs from continuing costs and then subtracts assets available to the family.

1. Add immediate expenses

  • Funeral and other final expenses.
  • Mortgage and other personal debts.
  • Business or education liabilities that would become payable.

2. Add the value of ongoing costs

  • Ordinary household living costs.
  • Child-care, schooling and other education costs.
  • Support that a partner, children or another dependant would otherwise receive from the insured person’s income or unpaid work.

3. Subtract resources already available

  • Savings and investments that the family could use.
  • Existing insurance, including relevant cover held through super.
  • Other assets or income that would genuinely be available after death.

The calculator uses default assumptions of 2.5% annual inflation and a 3.0% annual investment return. Those are calculator assumptions, not measured outcomes or universal forecasts. Moneysmart says the tool does not account for tax that may apply to benefits and is not financial advice or a product recommendation. Revisit the estimate when debts, dependants, assets or assumptions change.

If you have no partner, children or other financial dependants, you may have less reason to buy death cover. Other risks, such as inability to work, permanent disability or a serious illness, require different products such as income protection, total and permanent disability (TPD) or trauma cover.

Check whether whole-of-life cover is actually available

Do not assume that a whole-of-life policy shown in an old document can still be purchased. AIA Australia’s guide to the whole-of-life, endowment and pure-endowment products described in that guide says: “These products are no longer open to new business.” That statement applies to the products covered by that guide, not necessarily every whole-of-life policy in Australia.

A separate current target-market document identified a conversion route for some existing policyholders in one product series. That is not evidence of broad market availability. If you already have a policy, ask the issuer whether it can be continued, converted, paid up or replaced, and request current figures in writing. Do not surrender or stop premiums on a legacy contract based only on a general comparison of product types.

Understand the premium before comparing prices

Age-stepped and variable premiums

Premiums can rise as you get older, and another variable-premium structure may allow annual changes. Premiums can also increase when the insured amount is indexed or otherwise changed. Moneysmart states that premiums are not guaranteed and may change annually, regardless of whether cover is paid inside or outside super.

An attractive first-year quote is therefore not a long-term cost comparison. Ask for the premium schedule over the period you expect to hold the cover and identify every amount that is guaranteed. Even a quote described as level or fixed must be checked against the policy disclosure statement (PDS) for permitted adjustments, indexation and conditions.

Whole-of-life charges and values

For a whole-of-life contract, compare the guaranteed death benefit, any non-guaranteed bonuses, accumulated value, surrender value and paid-up options. Ask what happens after a missed premium, when charges are deducted, and whether surrender ends all future benefits. A cash value is not the same as a guaranteed return, and an investment component does not remove investment, fee or policy risk.

Inspect the benefit, trigger and exclusions

Before applying, read the PDS and the contract rather than relying on a comparison label.

  • Benefit trigger: confirm whether the policy pays on death, terminal illness, or accidental death only. Accidental-death cover is narrower and has exclusions.
  • Definitions and exclusions: check pre-existing conditions, suicide provisions, risky activities, waiting or qualifying rules and policy-specific limits.
  • Underwriting: insurers may consider age, occupation, health, family medical history, smoking, lifestyle and high-risk hobbies. Answer accurately. Missing or misleading information can lead to altered or cancelled cover or a refused claim.
  • Beneficiaries and ownership: establish who owns the policy, who is nominated to receive a benefit and whether payment is made directly, through an estate or by a super trustee.
  • Claims and complaints: identify the notification process, required evidence and the insurer’s internal complaints path.

Australian insurers are required to provide a PDS before purchase. Use it to verify cover, exclusions, premium changes, claims and complaints. For an older whole-of-life policy, also request current benefit, surrender and paid-up statements from the issuer.

Compare cover inside and outside super

Insurance through super can be easier to obtain and may appear cheaper because premiums are deducted from the account. It can also reduce retirement savings, and cover may change or stop under fund rules. Moneysmart notes that a fund may have inactivity or balance requirements and that cover can be affected when employment or funds change.

  1. Obtain the amount insured and the exact definitions for death, TPD or any other cover.
  2. Check inactivity, minimum-balance, portability and employer-change rules.
  3. Calculate the premium deductions and their effect on retirement savings.
  4. Compare the fund’s cover with an outside-super policy, including ownership, beneficiary and claims arrangements.
  5. Remove duplication only after confirming that replacement cover is active and suitable.

Do not assume that a super policy is equivalent to a personally owned policy. The tax, trustee and payment arrangements can differ, and a fund’s insurance may not continue indefinitely.

A practical decision process

Step 1: List the people and obligations that depend on you

Record dependants, debts, housing costs and the years for which support is needed. Include unpaid care or household work that someone else would have to replace.

Step 2: Set the duration

Match the expected need to a period: for example, until a mortgage is repaid or children are financially independent. If the obligation is genuinely lifelong, investigate permanent cover and its guarantees instead of assuming term cover can always be renewed.

Step 3: Calculate the gap

Use immediate costs plus the present value of continuing costs, then subtract assets and existing cover. Test the result under different inflation, investment and debt assumptions rather than treating one calculator output as a promise.

Step 4: Request comparable illustrations

Ask each provider for the same insured amount, term, indexation choice and payment frequency. Request a year-by-year premium schedule, guaranteed and non-guaranteed values, expiry rules and the outcome if premiums stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Read the PDS and contract

Mark exclusions, definitions, underwriting requirements, premium-change provisions, beneficiary rules, claims evidence and cancellation rights. For a legacy policy, obtain current surrender and paid-up figures before considering any replacement.

Step 6: Recheck the decision periodically

Review after marriage or separation, a birth, a major debt change, a job or fund change, a large asset purchase, or a change in health. Recalculate the financial gap rather than automatically increasing or cancelling cover.

When each option may fit

A mortgage and young children

A defined term often matches the years of mortgage repayment and financial dependence. Compare the required lump sum with the debt, living costs and available assets, and verify whether the policy can be renewed or converted if circumstances change.

A lifelong dependant or estate objective

A lifelong need may justify investigating permanent cover, but only after checking actual availability, guarantees, premiums and surrender values. A term policy that expires before the need ends may not solve the problem.

An existing whole-of-life policy

Treat the existing contract as a separate financial asset and insurance arrangement. Request its current death benefit, cash or surrender value, paid-up options, bonuses, charges and premium requirements. A replacement policy may require new underwriting and could lose old guarantees.

No financial dependants

Death cover may be a lower priority when nobody relies on your income or unpaid support. Consider whether disability or income risks are more relevant, and avoid buying a benefit simply because a comparison site displays it.

Use comparison sites carefully

Comparison websites can provide a starting point, but Moneysmart warns that most do not show every product. Some earn money from sponsored placement or commissions, or collect personal information. The regulator also describes a Federal Court finding concerning representations by one comparison service about the range it compared.

Ask which providers and policy types are included, whether results are sponsored, and what information is shared. Then compare the insurer’s own PDS, quotation and contract. A prominent ranking is not evidence that a policy has the broadest cover or lowest long-run cost.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by the first-year premium instead of the expected cost and benefit over the holding period.
  • Assuming “level” or “fixed” means no permitted premium or indexation changes.
  • Using a salary multiple without subtracting assets or adding actual debts and family costs.
  • Treating whole-of-life cash value as a guaranteed investment return.
  • Assuming a product closed to new business by one insurer proves that every Australian whole-of-life policy is unavailable.
  • Replacing an old policy before confirming new underwriting, exclusions, effective dates and surrender consequences.
  • Failing to disclose smoking, health history, occupation or risky activities accurately.
  • Paying for overlapping super and outside-super cover without checking whether the extra benefit is needed.
  • Confusing life cover with TPD, trauma or income-protection cover, which respond to different events.

Bottom line for an Australian buyer

Choose term cover when your main need is to protect dependants, debts or household costs for a defined period. Consider whole-of-life only for a demonstrably lifelong need or an existing contract whose guarantees and accumulated value have been properly measured. In either case, calculate the financial gap, compare guaranteed and non-guaranteed values, inspect premium-change rules and exclusions, and confirm ownership and beneficiary arrangements. An Australian-licensed financial adviser can help with a personal recommendation; the general framework here is not personal financial advice.
