Stay on Braze if your highest-value programs depend on live behavioral events, mobile push or in-app messaging, and frequent testing by a lean lifecycle team. Move toward Salesforce Marketing Cloud when customer, account, lead, opportunity, service, and consent data already live in Salesforce and governance, permissions, shared reporting, and partner support matter more than maximum iteration speed. A coexistence model is practical when Salesforce remains the system of record while Braze handles event-triggered engagement.
The decision is also affected by Salesforce’s October 20, 2026 announcement of a proposed Braze acquisition. The transaction, valued at approximately $5.66 billion enterprise value, was still subject to shareholder and regulatory approval and was expected to close in fiscal year 2028. Treat it as a roadmap risk to investigate, not as completed ownership or proof that the products are already integrated.

Choose the platform that best matches your most time-sensitive customer moments and your operating model, not the one with the longer feature list. Braze is generally the better fit for real-time, mobile-first lifecycle engagement. Salesforce Marketing Cloud is generally the better fit for organizations standardizing marketing, sales, service, data, permissions, and reporting on Salesforce.
| Choose Braze when… | Choose Salesforce Marketing Cloud when… |
|---|---|
| Activation, churn prevention, repeat purchase, or other journeys must react to product or web events within seconds or minutes. | Marketing must use authoritative Salesforce account, lead, opportunity, service, and consent context. |
| Lifecycle marketers need direct control over frequent experiments and channel changes. | Role-based access, approvals, business-unit controls, and Salesforce-wide reporting are decisive. |
| Push, in-app, email, SMS, web push, webhooks, or WhatsApp are central to the program. | Multiple teams and partners need a standardized operating process and governance model. |
| You can maintain reliable event instrumentation, identity resolution, and consent handling outside the CRM. | You already have Salesforce administrators, data-cloud expertise, and partner capacity to support a more specialized implementation. |
If both columns describe your business, do not force a binary choice. Keep Salesforce as the customer and account system while using Braze for event-triggered engagement, with explicit ownership for identity, consent, suppression, reporting, and incident response.

What are Braze and Salesforce Marketing Cloud designed to do?
How Braze approaches engagement
Braze is organized around live customer behavior. Its documented capabilities include SDKs, a dashboard, REST APIs, custom events and attributes, segmentation, push notifications, in-app messages, email, SMS, web push, webhooks, and WhatsApp. Product, web, billing, or other behavioral events can become audience or trigger signals for a journey.
That architecture is valuable when the timing of a message affects its outcome. A first-use prompt delivered immediately after an account action, a replenishment reminder after a usage threshold, or a churn intervention after a drop in activity can be built around event latency rather than a scheduled CRM batch.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud is the stronger default when marketing is part of a Salesforce-standardized customer operating model. The attraction is not simply sending messages; it is governing marketing activity alongside CRM data, Data 360, Customer 360, sales, service, and other Salesforce processes. Shared permissions, approval paths, and reporting can be more important than the fastest possible journey edit.
Salesforce’s model can require more specialized skills as data models, business units, permissions, and integrations grow. In exchange, organizations that already run on Salesforce may avoid duplicating customer and account logic in a separate engagement stack.
Which customer moments should determine the choice?
Start with five to ten moments that materially affect revenue or retention. For each, record the event that starts the journey, the latest acceptable response time, the channels required, the system that owns the data, and who must approve a change.
| Customer moment | Signals to document | Likely fit |
|---|---|---|
| Activation and first value | Signup, setup completion, feature use, time since last action; often needs a message within minutes. | Braze when product events drive the sequence; Salesforce when the process is lead- or account-led. |
| Repeat purchase or replenishment | Order, consumption, subscription state, inventory or billing events. | Braze for behavioral timing; either platform if the authoritative trigger is already in Salesforce. |
| Churn risk | Declining usage, failed payment, support case, renewal date, or account health. | Coexistence is common: Braze reacts to usage while Salesforce supplies account and service context. |
| Upgrade or cross-sell | Eligibility, opportunity stage, product ownership, contract terms, and consent. | Salesforce when opportunity and account governance control eligibility; Braze when in-product behavior is decisive. |
| Service recovery | Case status, outage, complaint, resolution, and suppression rules. | Salesforce when service records and approvals are central; Braze can deliver rapid follow-up once an approved event is emitted. |
| Renewal | Contract dates, payment status, account tier, owner, and engagement history. | Salesforce for account-led orchestration; Braze for behavioral reminders and channel sequencing. |
Mark each moment as seconds or minutes, hours, or days. Count how many revenue-critical moments truly need the first category. A high share points toward Braze or a hybrid design; a low share combined with complex account governance points toward Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
Is Braze better for mobile and real-time personalization?
For mobile-first, event-triggered programs, Braze has the clearer design center. Its SDK and channel set support push and in-app messaging alongside email, SMS, web push, webhooks, and WhatsApp, while custom events and attributes feed segmentation and triggers.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
That does not make every Braze implementation automatically real time. Your application must emit complete, timely events; identity keys must resolve correctly; and consent and suppression decisions must be available before a send. Poor instrumentation can make a behavior-focused platform appear slow or inaccurate.
Salesforce can still support personalized journeys, particularly when personalization depends on account, opportunity, service, or consent data governed in Salesforce. The trade-off is that assembling and approving those data relationships may involve more administration and specialist support than a focused lifecycle team expects.
How do data, identity, and consent requirements differ?
Document the complete data path before selecting a platform. Include product and web events, billing, support, CRM objects, identity keys, consent status, channel preferences, and suppression rules.
Braze data questions
- Which SDK or REST API events represent activation, usage, purchase, cancellation, and support states?
- Which stable identifier links an anonymous device, a known user, and an account?
- How are custom attributes updated, corrected, and deleted?
- Where is the authoritative preference center, and how quickly does an opt-out reach every channel?
- Which system prevents a message after a refund, complaint, legal request, or service incident?
Salesforce data questions
- Which Salesforce objects are authoritative for contacts, accounts, leads, opportunities, cases, subscriptions, and consent?
- How are Data 360 or other Salesforce-wide identities reconciled with marketing profiles?
- Which roles can view, segment, approve, publish, or export data?
- How do business units share suppression lists, templates, and reporting definitions?
Neither vendor choice removes the need for a written identity and consent model. Assign an owner for matching rules, preference changes, deletion requests, event taxonomy, and suppression incidents before production launch.
Which platform lets a lean team launch and iterate faster?
Braze is described as generally easier for lean teams to operate and often faster to launch, especially when lifecycle marketers can work directly with event data and journey controls. Salesforce can require administrators, permission design, data specialists, and partner coordination as complexity increases.
Test this claim with a representative journey rather than a demo. Give both teams the same brief: for example, trigger an onboarding sequence from an application event, suppress users who open a support case, branch by plan, and report conversion. Measure elapsed time from request to approved production change, the number of specialist handoffs, defects found in identity or consent checks, and the effort to roll back.
Fast editing is not always the right goal. Regulated industries or large enterprises may accept slower change windows when approvals, audit trails, and separation of duties reduce operational risk. The correct question is whether the speed and control level match your business.

How much does Salesforce Marketing Cloud cost compared with Braze?
Published prices are not directly comparable because Salesforce publishes organization-level package anchors while Braze customizes quotes around platform edition, monthly active users, and flexible credits for messaging and AI usage.
| Offering | Published price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Marketing Cloud Next Growth | $1,500 USD per organization per month | Salesforce listing in 2026; billed annually. |
| Salesforce Marketing Cloud Next Advanced | $3,250 USD per organization per month | Salesforce listing in 2026; billed annually. |
| Salesforce Personalization | $8,000 USD per organization per month | Salesforce listing in 2026; billed annually. |
| Braze | Custom quote | Pricing varies by platform edition, monthly active users, and flexible credits for messaging and AI usage; no universal public list price is established here. |
Use the same audience, send-volume, channel, retention, and AI-usage assumptions in both requests for proposal. A low subscription figure can be overwhelmed by implementation, data engineering, partner services, training, deliverability work, or additional administrators.
What should a five-year total-cost model include?
- License and platform fees: include annual escalators, package changes, and any separate data or personalization components.
- Audience and message volume: model monthly active users, contact growth, peak sends, channel mix, and credit consumption.
- Implementation or migration: include solution design, event mapping, template rebuilding, testing, cutover, and rollback preparation.
- Integration and data engineering: budget for SDK or API work, identity resolution, CRM or data-cloud synchronization, and monitoring.
- Administration and campaign operations: count internal marketers, administrators, analysts, privacy staff, and on-call coverage.
- Partners and training: include consulting, certified partner support, enablement, and documentation.
- Deliverability and compliance: account for domain setup, reputation management, consent audits, accessibility, and legal reviews.
- Cost of delayed experiments: estimate the revenue or retention impact when a test waits for a specialist, approval, or integration change.
Request a Braze quote and a Salesforce proposal using this model. Do not treat either vendor’s package price as your five-year cost.
How should we score the options instead of counting features?
Weight the decision by customer moments. A feature checklist can award points for capabilities your business never uses, while hiding a critical weakness in latency, identity, or governance.
| Decision axis | Questions to score |
|---|---|
| Real-time event response | Can the platform receive the required event, evaluate eligibility, and act within the moment’s latency limit? |
| Mobile push and in-app depth | Can product teams support the device, app, and message behaviors you actually need? |
| CRM and data-cloud integration | Can authoritative account, opportunity, service, and consent data be used without unsafe duplication? |
| Journey-building speed | How long does a tested, approved change take, and how many handoffs are required? |
| Governance and permissions | Can roles, approvals, business units, audit requirements, and separation of duties be enforced? |
| Implementation and specialist staffing | Do you have the administrators, data engineers, and partner capacity the design requires? |
| Reporting ownership | Which system owns conversion, revenue attribution, engagement, and executive reporting definitions? |
| Consent and identity operations | Can opt-outs, preference changes, merges, deletions, and suppression incidents be handled reliably? |
| Five-year total cost | What is the fully loaded cost under realistic audience, volume, staffing, and delay assumptions? |
| Roadmap and acquisition risk | What contractual and product protections exist if ownership, packaging, or integration plans change? |
Assign each axis a weight based on your moments, score each platform from one to five using evidence from the representative journey, multiply score by weight, and record assumptions. Require an explicit “cannot meet” flag for any legal, consent, latency, or data-ownership requirement; an average score should not conceal a disqualifier.
Can we use Braze and Salesforce Marketing Cloud together?
Yes. A credible coexistence design keeps Salesforce as the CRM and account system while Braze handles real-time, event-triggered engagement. The architecture is safe only when ownership boundaries are documented before both platforms send messages.
Define ownership before connecting systems
- Identity matching: choose the master identifier, merge rules, and process for anonymous-to-known profiles.
- Consent and preferences: name the authoritative preference center and the maximum time allowed for changes to propagate.
- Event taxonomy: publish definitions for activation, purchase, cancellation, case, renewal, and other triggers.
- Suppression: specify which system blocks sends after opt-out, complaint, fraud, refund, or service escalation.
- Journey ownership: assign each use case to one platform so two automations cannot contact the same person inconsistently.
- Reporting: define whether engagement, conversion, revenue, and attribution are reported from Salesforce, Braze, a warehouse, or a governed combination.
- Incident response: document who can pause campaigns, revoke credentials, investigate duplicate sends, and communicate an outage.
Hybrid operation adds integration and monitoring cost. Use it when the value of real-time engagement plus Salesforce governance exceeds the cost of maintaining two operating environments.

What does Salesforce’s proposed Braze acquisition mean for the roadmap?
Salesforce announced a definitive agreement to acquire Braze on October 20, 2026, for approximately $5.66 billion enterprise value. The announcement said closing was expected in fiscal year 2028, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals. Until closing occurs, Braze remains a separate company; even after closing, an announcement is not a product-integration schedule.

Salesforce said the intended combination would connect Braze’s real-time engagement and AI decisioning with Marketing Cloud, Data 360, Customer 360, and Agentforce. Those are strategic intentions, not commitments to a particular feature, price, API, contract term, or migration path.
Questions to put in writing before signing or renewing
- Will existing contracts, service levels, data-processing terms, and renewal pricing remain unchanged through the transaction and afterward?
- What export formats, API access, event history, templates, consent records, and identity data will remain portable?
- Which Braze products, SDKs, channels, and partner integrations are on the supported roadmap?
- Will customers be required to move to a Salesforce package, and if so, what migration assistance and pricing protection apply?
- How will support be divided during any period when products, accounts, or partner channels overlap?
- What is the timeline for, and limits of, integration with Marketing Cloud, Data 360, Customer 360, and Agentforce?
For a renewal or migration decision made before regulatory approval, preserve optionality: negotiate data-export rights, termination or transition language where available, and a documented fallback architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is a practical decision and migration process?
Use a staged process that proves the operating model before committing to a broad migration.
- Inventory moments: list the highest-value activation, purchase, churn, upgrade, renewal, and service journeys; mark latency, channels, and owners.
- Map systems: document every event, CRM object, billing feed, identity key, consent state, and suppression source.
- Run a controlled proof: build one representative journey on the incumbent platform and the candidate platform, including a real consent change and a rollback.
- Measure operations: record time to approved production change, specialist hours, defects, reporting completeness, and incident-recovery steps.
- Build the five-year model: use the same audience and volume assumptions for platform fees, implementation, staffing, partners, compliance, and delayed experiments.
- Choose an architecture: stay, migrate in waves, or coexist with explicit ownership and monitoring.
- Sequence migration: move low-risk journeys first, freeze taxonomy changes during cutover, reconcile audiences, and keep a rollback path until sends and reporting reconcile.
- Reassess quarterly: review latency, experiment throughput, consent incidents, cost per active customer, and any acquisition-related contract or roadmap changes.

Comparing list prices only
Salesforce’s published organization prices and Braze’s customized audience-and-credit pricing measure different things. Add implementation, integration, administration, partners, training, compliance, and delay costs before comparing.
Ignoring event quality
A real-time platform cannot compensate for missing timestamps, duplicate events, unstable identifiers, or delayed billing and support feeds. Establish data-quality checks and an owner before launch.

Running duplicate journeys
In a hybrid design, two systems can send conflicting or duplicate messages. Assign one owner per journey and enforce shared suppression and frequency rules.
Assuming the acquisition settles the choice
The proposed transaction may change packaging or integration, but its closing and terms were not yet certain as of October 25, 2026. Keep contractual and technical exit options until the roadmap is documented.

Underestimating governance work
Approvals, permissions, business-unit design, data retention, and audit evidence can be essential controls rather than administrative overhead. Include the people and time required to operate them.
Which choice is most defensible for a finance-conscious team?
Stay on Braze when the measurable value comes from rapid, behavior-based mobile and cross-channel engagement and your organization can operate event, identity, and consent infrastructure reliably. Favor Salesforce Marketing Cloud when consolidating customer data, permissions, reporting, and partner support in Salesforce reduces material operational or compliance risk. Choose coexistence when each platform has a distinct job and the additional integration cost is explicitly funded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the proposed Salesforce acquisition automatically end Braze contracts?
No. The October 20, 2026 announcement described a proposed transaction that still required shareholder and regulatory approvals and was expected to close in fiscal year 2028. Contract continuity, renewal terms, and any transition rights should be confirmed in writing with the vendor.
Can a small lifecycle team run Salesforce Marketing Cloud without a partner?
It may be possible for a simple, well-governed setup, but the decision should account for administrator, data, permissions, and integration skills. As business units and approval requirements grow, partner or specialist support may become necessary.

Provide monthly active users, projected growth, send volumes by channel, peak periods, required products, AI or credit usage, data retention needs, implementation scope, and support expectations. Matching these assumptions to a Salesforce proposal makes the comparison more meaningful.
How do we prevent duplicate messages in a hybrid setup?
Assign one platform as the owner for each journey, synchronize consent and suppression states, and maintain a shared identity key. Add frequency caps and an incident procedure that can pause both platforms when reconciliation fails.
