How to choose between an individual life policy and employer-provided cover

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

For most UK employees, the right starting point is to calculate what your dependants would need, then check the exact death-in-service benefit your employer provides. Workplace cover may meet that need while you remain eligible, but it is connected to your job and can end when employment ends. An individual policy stays separate from your employer and can fill a shortfall, cover a specific debt or period, or provide continuity if you change jobs.

There is no universal instruction to buy extra cover. Compare the amount, duration, cost, eligibility rules, beneficiary arrangements and exclusions against your household’s actual financial obligations before deciding.

What you are comparing

Employer-provided life cover

Employer life insurance is usually a death-in-service benefit attached to a workplace scheme. It pays a lump sum if an eligible employee dies while covered under the scheme. MoneyHelper says workplace life cover is typically two or four times annual salary, but that is only a broad example. Your employer’s scheme documents control the formula, salary definition, eligibility, waiting periods and any limits.

The benefit may be employer-funded, optional, or included in a flexible-benefits package. Do not assume that a benefit shown in an employee portal is cost-free or that every worker receives the same amount. Ask human resources or the scheme administrator for the current rules and a statement of the insured benefit.

An individual life policy

An individual policy is a contract between you and an insurer. You choose the amount and term, subject to the insurer’s underwriting and policy terms, and you keep the cover in force by paying the premiums. It does not depend on staying with one employer.

Personal cover can be level term, decreasing term, whole-of-life or another design. The suitable form depends on what you are protecting. A mortgage that reduces over time may call for decreasing cover; a family income need over a fixed period may fit level term cover. Whole-of-life policies have different costs and purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable with a standard term policy.

First calculate what your household would need

Do not start with the salary multiple offered by work. Start with the financial consequences of your death. The amount depends on your household, not on a standard industry formula.

List immediate liabilities

  • Outstanding mortgage or other secured borrowing.
  • Personal loans, credit commitments and any debts that your estate or family would otherwise have to meet.
  • Funeral and immediate administrative costs, where you want the policy to provide for them.

Estimate the ongoing need

  • Essential household spending, including housing, food, utilities, childcare and transport.
  • How long dependants would need support and whether children’s costs change as they grow.
  • Whether a surviving partner could continue working and what their take-home pay would contribute.
  • Education, care or other planned costs that would be difficult to meet after your death.

Subtract resources that would be available

Consider savings, investments, other life policies, a partner’s income, pension benefits and assets the family could realistically use. Treat an asset as available only if selling or using it would be practical and would not create a different financial problem.

Write the result as a target amount and a period. For example, a family may need enough to clear a mortgage plus several years of essential spending, while a single person with no dependants may have a much smaller requirement. The sources do not prescribe a universal calculation, so use your own figures and obtain regulated advice if the decision is complex.

Read the workplace scheme documents, not just the benefits summary

Before relying on employer cover, obtain the plan rules or ask the scheme administrator for written answers to the following questions.

How is the amount calculated?

  • Is the benefit a fixed sum or a multiple of salary?
  • Which salary counts: basic pay, total pay, commission or a capped amount?
  • Does the amount change when you receive a promotion, reduce hours or take parental leave?
  • Are there age limits, service requirements or other eligibility conditions?

When does cover start and stop?

Confirm the date cover begins, whether you must be actively at work, and what happens during leave or a change in employment status. MoneyHelper’s general warning is clear: “if you stop working for that employer, you’ll no longer be covered under their policy.” The exact scheme rules determine whether any limited continuation or conversion option exists; do not assume that portability is available.

What happens if the employer changes provider?

Ask whether a change of insurer or scheme affects existing employees, benefit levels or underwriting. The employer or administrator should explain the transition terms. Keep copies of benefit statements and scheme correspondence so you can prove what cover applied at a particular time.

Compare the two options on the same criteria

Comparison Employer-provided cover Individual policy
Amount Often based on a salary multiple; verify the formula, salary definition and eligibility in the scheme rules. You choose a target amount, subject to underwriting, insurer limits and policy terms.
Continuity Linked to the employer arrangement and normally ends when employment there ends. Independent of a particular employer while premiums are paid and the policy remains in force.
Cost May be employer-funded, optional or part of flexible benefits. Check whether any employee contribution or tax treatment applies. Premium depends on age, health, smoking, lifestyle, occupation, cover amount and term. Obtain an actual quote.
Eligibility Controlled by the scheme: employment status, service, working hours and other rules may matter. Insurer assesses your personal information and may apply exclusions, loadings or decline cover.
Term and design Usually a workplace lump-sum benefit; the scheme wording controls its shape. Can be level term, decreasing term, whole-of-life or another design selected for the need.
Beneficiaries Nomination rules vary. Some schemes may not recognise a cohabiting partner as a beneficiary. Check the beneficiary nomination and whether a trust is appropriate for your circumstances.
Underwriting Individual medical underwriting may not be required, but scheme-specific conditions still apply. The insurer asks for personal information; inaccurate or incomplete answers can jeopardise a claim.

Work out whether there is a shortfall

Put your target need beside the confirmed workplace benefit and any existing personal policies. The difference is not automatically the amount you must buy: you may decide that assets, income or a shorter period make the gap acceptable. Conversely, a salary multiple can look generous while still being inadequate once a mortgage and long-term family spending are included.

A simple worksheet

  1. Write the amount needed to clear debts and immediate costs.
  2. Add the capital required for the dependants’ planned support period.
  3. Subtract usable savings, other insurance and realistic surviving-household income.
  4. Record the employer benefit using the scheme’s actual formula, not a generic two- or four-times example.
  5. Subtract the employer benefit and existing personal cover from the target. Review the remaining gap against your budget and risk tolerance.

The result may lead to one of three decisions: no additional cover, a personal policy for the gap, or a policy designed around a specific liability or period. You can also retain workplace cover as a useful extra while using an individual policy as the dependable foundation.

Choose the individual policy shape to match the obligation

Level-term cover

Level-term cover keeps the insured amount broadly constant for the chosen term. It can suit a family who needs a consistent lump sum for dependants or a fixed financial obligation. Confirm whether premiums are guaranteed or reviewable and how the insurer defines the term.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decreasing-term cover

Decreasing cover is designed for a liability expected to fall, such as a repayment mortgage. The insurer’s reduction schedule may not exactly match your loan balance, so check the policy basis and avoid assuming that it will clear every remaining pound.

Whole-of-life cover

Whole-of-life cover is intended to remain in force for life if the required premiums are paid, but it has different pricing, policy conditions and uses from term insurance. Ask for a clear explanation of the premium structure, guarantees and consequences of stopping payments before treating it as a substitute for workplace or term cover.

Term and amount

Set the term against the period of vulnerability: the years until a mortgage is repaid, children become financially independent, or another income source becomes available. A shorter term may cost less but can leave a later gap; a longer term may cost more. The insurer’s quote, underwriting decision and exclusions determine the actual price and scope.

Understand premiums and underwriting

Personal premiums reflect your age, health, smoking status, lifestyle, occupation, the amount insured and the policy term. Two people requesting the same sum can receive very different quotes. Existing policies can become harder or more expensive to replace as you get older or your health changes, so do not cancel an existing policy merely because a new quote looks attractive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give complete and accurate information

Answer every application question fully, including relevant medical history, smoking and lifestyle details. An inaccurate or incomplete answer can affect the insurer’s assessment and jeopardise a later claim. If you are unsure what a question means, ask the insurer or an appropriately qualified adviser before submitting it.

Compare like with like

Obtain quotes for the same insured amount, term, premium basis and policy type. A lower premium may reflect less cover, more exclusions, a shorter term or a reviewable price rather than a better deal. Read the policy wording, not only the headline quote.

Check beneficiaries, nominations and payment route

Review who would receive the money and how it would be paid. Workplace schemes usually use a nomination process, but the rules vary and some may not recognise an unmarried cohabiting partner. Update nominations after marriage, separation, a new child, a death or any other major change.

An individual policy may be paid into your estate if no beneficiary is named. Trust arrangements can affect control, distribution and estate treatment, but the appropriate choice depends on your personal and tax circumstances. Ask the insurer, a solicitor or an appropriately qualified financial adviser before setting up or changing a trust. Keep nominations and policy documents with your will and tell the relevant people where they are held.

What happens when you leave or change jobs?

Resigning or being made redundant

Ask the administrator for the precise end date of cover and whether any continuation or conversion option exists. The available evidence does not establish a universal right to continue workplace insurance, so do not build your plan around portability unless your scheme confirms it in writing.

Starting a new job

Obtain the new employer’s benefit statement before assuming that your previous level is replicated. The new scheme may use a different salary multiple, eligibility rule or beneficiary process, and there may be a waiting period. Keep an individual policy in force during the transition if it is part of your protection plan.

Reducing hours or changing status

Check whether part-time work, unpaid leave, probation, contractor status or a move outside the eligible employee group changes the benefit. A benefits portal may not show every condition, so confirm with the scheme administrator.

Use comparison services with the right expectations

MoneyHelper identifies insurers, brokers and comparison sites as routes to individual cover. Comparison sites can help you see product information, but “Comparison sites don’t give ‘regulated advice’,” and no single site necessarily displays every insurer. If your needs are unusual, your health history is complex or you need help with trusts and beneficiaries, consider a broker or appropriately qualified adviser who can explain the limits of the recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask any adviser how they are paid, which insurers they can access and whether they are giving regulated advice. Whichever route you use, retain the quote, application answers, policy schedule and full wording.

Protect yourself against a coverage gap

  1. Apply for the replacement policy and wait for the insurer to confirm that cover is in force.
  2. Check the final insured amount, term, exclusions, premium and beneficiary arrangements against your intended plan.
  3. Make the first premium payment and confirm that the policy has not been postponed, declined or issued with different terms.
  4. Only then consider cancelling an older personal policy. MoneyHelper warns that replacement can be more expensive or less comprehensive after age or health changes.

If the new policy is still under review, keep the existing cover unless you have received specialist advice that a different course is safe. A gap can arise even when an application has been submitted.

Life cover is not income protection

Life insurance pays because of death. It does not replace earnings when you are unable to work because of illness or disability. Income protection is designed for loss of earnings caused by illness or injury, subject to its own definitions, waiting period and policy terms. Review that risk separately, alongside any employer sick-pay or disability benefits.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Relying on the typical salary multiple

Mistake: treating two or four times salary as a guaranteed benefit. Fix: obtain your scheme’s actual formula, salary definition and eligibility confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the job-change risk

Mistake: assuming workplace cover follows you to a new employer. Fix: ask about the end date and any continuation terms, and maintain independent cover if continuity matters.

Buying an amount without a needs calculation

Mistake: selecting the largest or cheapest available sum. Fix: list debts, housing, dependants, spending and other resources first.

Leaving nominations out of date

Mistake: assuming a will automatically overrides every scheme nomination. Fix: review the scheme nomination and personal-policy beneficiary instructions after life changes.

Comparing unlike policies

Mistake: comparing a short decreasing policy with a longer level policy by premium alone. Fix: match amount, term, design, exclusions and premium basis before judging value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cancelling before replacement is active

Mistake: cancelling an old policy when a new application has only been submitted. Fix: wait for full acceptance, confirmation of cover and the first payment.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Define the need. Record debts, mortgage or rent, essential spending, dependants, other income and usable assets.
  2. Verify workplace cover. Confirm the amount or formula, eligibility, start and end dates, exclusions and leaving-job rules.
  3. Check beneficiaries. Confirm who can be nominated under the scheme and update personal-policy arrangements.
  4. Calculate the gap. Compare the target need with workplace cover and existing policies.
  5. Select the design. Match level or decreasing cover, term and amount to the obligation rather than to a generic salary multiple.
  6. Obtain comparable quotes. Use insurers, a broker or comparison sites with a clear understanding of what each route does and does not provide.
  7. Read and verify. Check the application answers, schedule, exclusions, premium basis, beneficiaries and payment terms.
  8. Keep continuity. Do not cancel existing personal cover until replacement cover is fully established and the first payment has been made.
  9. Review after change. Revisit the plan after a new job, salary change, mortgage, birth, separation, health change or other event that alters the household’s need.

The decision in one sentence

Use employer-provided cover only after confirming exactly what it pays and how long it lasts; use an individual policy when you need cover that follows you, when workplace cover leaves a shortfall, or when a specific debt or family obligation requires a separately designed amount and term.
