How to Choose Between a Regular and Direct Mutual Fund Plan in India

Choose a direct plan if you can select suitable schemes, assess their risks and complete transactions yourself (or use a separately paid, registered investment adviser). Choose a regular plan if you value a distributor’s guidance and transaction help enough to accept the plan’s higher expenses. Both plans invest in the same mutual-fund scheme, with the same portfolio and fund manager. The difference is the distribution arrangement and the expense ratio charged to investors.

That makes this a suitability decision, not a contest in which one plan is always superior. A direct plan can leave more of the fund’s return with you because it does not include distributor compensation, but it does not reduce market risk, guarantee better fund selection or remove the work of monitoring your investments.

What regular and direct plans actually are

Mutual-fund houses commonly offer two plan variants within the same scheme:

  • Regular plan: you invest through a distributor or intermediary. The plan’s expenses include distribution-related compensation, and the intermediary may help with scheme selection, forms and transactions.
  • Direct plan: you invest without a distributor or agent. The portfolio and fund manager are the same as in the corresponding regular plan, but the plan has no distributor commission and therefore normally has a lower total expense ratio (TER).

The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) describes direct plans as: “Direct Plans are for those who prefer to invest DIRECTLY in a mutual fund scheme without the help of any distributor/agent.” The wording describes the route, not a promise that direct plans are better investments.

Because the plans hold the same underlying assets, their net asset values (NAVs) can differ slightly as expenses accrue. A lower TER generally improves the investor’s net result over long periods, all else equal, but market performance, taxes, exit loads, investment timing and behavior can matter far more than a small plan-level difference.

Regular versus direct: the decision factors

Factor Regular plan Direct plan
Underlying scheme Same portfolio and fund manager as the direct variant Same portfolio and fund manager as the regular variant
Distribution relationship Purchased through a distributor or intermediary Purchased without a distributor or agent
Expense structure Higher TER may include distribution expenses Lower TER because distributor expenses are absent
Investor support Intermediary may assist with scheme selection, paperwork and transactions; the scope and quality of service vary You handle research, transactions and record-keeping, or arrange separate paid advice
Who it can suit New or uncertain investors who value help and ongoing transaction support Investors able to research, select and monitor schemes independently
Risk level Determined by the scheme’s investments, not by the plan label Determined by the scheme’s investments, not by the plan label

Do not assume a regular-plan distributor automatically provides personalized, continuous or unbiased advice. The official descriptions establish the intermediary’s role, but not the service level offered by a particular person or firm. Ask what you will receive, how often, and how compensation is paid.

Start with your own capability and needs

AMFI’s suitability guidance suggests asking whether you can perform the tasks that a distributor would otherwise help with. Work through these questions before looking at a TER:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Can you define the investment need? Identify the goal, time horizon, liquidity requirement and tolerance for losses. A plan choice cannot compensate for choosing a scheme whose risk does not fit the goal.
  2. Can you research schemes? You should be able to read the scheme’s objective, asset allocation, risk factors, benchmark, performance history, portfolio concentration and costs.
  3. Can you compare risks? Understand that equity, debt, hybrid and other categories can behave very differently. A lower-cost plan does not make a volatile scheme conservative.
  4. Can you shortlist and execute? You need to select the correct scheme and plan, complete KYC, submit purchases or systematic investment instructions, and keep your account details current.
  5. Can you stay disciplined? Independent investing requires rebalancing and reviewing your plan without making impulsive changes during market declines.

If you cannot confidently complete these tasks, a regular plan may be worth considering for the support you receive. If you can do them, a direct plan may be the simpler way to avoid paying for distribution. The right answer can also differ between family members or between goals.

When a regular plan may fit better

  • You are new to mutual funds and want help narrowing the scheme category and completing the application.
  • You find forms, nominations, systematic plans, redemptions or account servicing difficult to manage alone.
  • You want a human intermediary to help you maintain an investment process and you have verified the service and compensation.
  • You would otherwise make costly selection or timing mistakes because you lack the time or confidence to research.

When a direct plan may fit better

  • You can identify an appropriate scheme category, review its documents and accept responsibility for the decision.
  • You are comfortable investing through an AMC website, an exchange platform, MF Utility, another channel that explicitly supports direct plans, or paper forms.
  • You want the lower plan TER and do not need distributor execution or support.
  • You prefer to obtain advice separately from a registered investment adviser and then place investments yourself.

Compare the actual cost, not a headline percentage

The total expense ratio is expressed as a percentage of the fund’s average net assets (average NAV). Scheme expenses are deducted when the NAV is calculated, so you do not usually receive a separate bill. TERs can change and are disclosed daily on fund and AMFI websites.

There is no single industry-wide “direct plans save X%” figure that applies to every scheme. Compare the current TER for the exact scheme and plan you are considering. Check the same option—growth or income distribution, share class where applicable, and the same date—so that the comparison is meaningful.

A practical rupee estimate

For a rough annual estimate, subtract the direct-plan TER from the regular-plan TER and multiply the difference by an approximate average holding value:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimated annual expense difference = (regular TER − direct TER) × approximate average holding value

For example, if a scheme’s current TER difference were 0.40 percentage points and your approximate average holding were ₹5,00,000, the arithmetic estimate would be ₹2,000 for a year. This is not a guaranteed saving: your balance changes with market returns, contributions and withdrawals, and the TER itself can change. Use the scheme’s published figures rather than an assumed industry average.

Why the same return can produce different net outcomes

A September 2025 scheme-information-document illustration from Wealth Company Mutual Fund uses ₹10,000 invested, ₹1,500 of pre-expense returns, ₹150 of non-distribution expenses in each plan, ₹50 of distribution expenses in the regular plan and ₹0 in the direct plan. Its indicative after-expense returns are ₹1,300 for the regular plan and ₹1,350 for the direct plan. The document labels these figures an illustration subject to change; they are not a typical TER gap or a return forecast.

SEBI’s investor explainer gives another hypothetical example: ₹1,00,000 earning an assumed 10% before expenses, with assumed plan expense ratios of 1.5% and 0.5%, produces stated effective returns of 8.5% and 9.5%. Those assumptions are instructional, not the actual cost or return for your fund. They show the mechanism: expenses reduce the return that remains in the NAV.

Value the support you are actually buying

A distributor can provide more than a transaction link: possible services include explaining scheme documents, helping with forms, coordinating purchases and redemptions, and assisting when account details change. Before choosing a regular plan, ask for a written description of the service, the frequency of reviews, the person responsible, and the compensation arrangement. A higher TER is worthwhile only if the service helps you make and maintain suitable decisions.

Advice and plan choice do not have to be bundled. AMFI notes that a direct-plan investor may seek guidance from a registered investment adviser and pay that adviser a separate fee. This can suit someone who wants professional planning but prefers to execute investments without a distributor. Verify the adviser’s registration, scope of service, fees, conflicts and grievance process before engaging one; no adviser or provider is endorsed merely because this option exists.

How to buy a direct plan correctly

Direct plans are available through routes such as an AMC’s own website, exchange platforms, MF Utility, other digital channels that explicitly offer direct plans, and paper applications. Availability differs by portal. AMFI cautions that not every platform offers direct plans and that banks acting as distributors cannot offer direct plans on their web portals.

  1. Complete KYC first. KYC is a prerequisite before investing. Confirm that your name, PAN, address, bank account and contact details are consistent across records.
  2. Choose the scheme and option. Read the current scheme documents, objective, risk factors, asset allocation, exit-load rules and applicable disclosures. Decide whether the scheme itself fits your goal before considering the plan variant.
  3. Use a route that supports direct plans. On the application or platform, select the option labelled Direct Plan. Do not assume that a portal’s default is direct.
  4. Check distributor fields. Ensure distributor or ARN details are not entered for a transaction intended for the direct plan. If the form displays a distributor field, ask the platform how a direct transaction should be recorded rather than guessing.
  5. Review the confirmation. Before submitting, verify the fund name, plan, option, amount, bank account, nominee details and any systematic-investment instructions.
  6. Save the transaction record. Keep the application receipt, confirmation, account statement and scheme documents so you can identify which plan you own.

A label such as “online,” “self-service” or “zero commission” is not enough evidence that the transaction is direct. The confirmation should identify the plan explicitly.

How to check whether an existing holding is regular

Look at your account statement, transaction confirmation or consolidated account statement for the words Regular Plan, Direct Plan, a distributor or ARN entry, and the scheme’s plan code. If the record is unclear, ask the AMC or platform to confirm the plan in writing. Do not infer the plan solely from the app or website through which you currently view the investment.

Switching an existing investment requires a separate check

Moving from a regular plan to a direct plan is not automatically a cost-free administrative change. The applicable tax treatment and scheme-specific exit-load consequences depend on the transaction and current rules. The available official material does not establish a universal tax-neutral conversion or a universal exemption from exit loads.

Before acting, obtain the current scheme documents and current Indian tax guidance for your circumstances. Confirm whether the proposed action is a switch, redemption followed by a purchase, or another transaction; check holding-period consequences, exit-load windows, capital-gains reporting and any loss of systematic instructions. If you need individualized tax advice, use a qualified professional. Do not sell solely because a direct plan has a lower TER without first calculating the one-time consequences.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming direct means safer or higher-performing

Plan selection changes expenses and distribution, not the scheme’s investment risk. A direct equity plan can fall just as much as its regular counterpart, and a poorly chosen direct scheme can underperform a suitable regular one after all costs.

Using a generic TER difference

TERs vary by scheme and can change. Pull the current figures for the exact plan and date, then use the average-balance estimate only as an illustration.

Choosing a regular plan for an undefined service

Ask what the intermediary will do after the purchase. If the only service is order execution and you can perform that yourself, compare the cost with the value you place on convenience.

Choosing direct without a monitoring process

Write down why you selected the scheme, what would trigger a review and how often you will check it. Independent investing still requires record-keeping, rebalancing decisions and attention to scheme changes.

Trusting a platform’s default

Some portals route transactions through distributors. Verify the plan on the order screen and final confirmation, especially for recurring investments.

Ignoring KYC or account details

Incomplete KYC, mismatched bank details or outdated contact information can delay transactions. Resolve those items before placing an order.

A decision framework you can use in 10 minutes

  1. Write the goal and horizon. If you cannot state these, pause plan selection and clarify the investment need.
  2. Assess capability. Mark yes or no for researching schemes, understanding risks, completing transactions and monitoring the holding.
  3. Price support. Obtain the current regular and direct TERs and estimate the rupee difference using an average balance.
  4. Describe the service. If considering regular, document exactly what the distributor provides and how compensation is received.
  5. Choose the execution route. If direct, select a channel that explicitly supports direct plans. If regular, confirm the intermediary and the plan recorded on the application.
  6. Check the downside. Before switching an existing holding, calculate possible taxes, exit loads and transaction effects using current documents and advice.
  7. Record the decision. Save the scheme rationale, TER comparison date and confirmation so you can review the choice later.

Bottom-line choice

Pick a direct plan when you can make and execute suitable scheme decisions independently, or when you arrange separately paid advice, and the lower current TER matters to you. Pick a regular plan when a verified distributor’s guidance and transaction support are valuable enough to justify the higher expenses. In either case, select the scheme for its objective and risk first, verify the exact plan before investing, and treat any switch from an existing holding as a transaction requiring current tax and exit-load checks.
