Choose between a Post Office Time Deposit (the National Savings Time Deposit, or Post Office TD) and a bank fixed deposit by matching the same deposit amount and maturity period, then comparing the actual return, payout pattern, early-closure rules, protection, eligibility and tax treatment. There is no defensible universal winner: India Post publishes a period-based rate range, while every bank sets its own schedule.
For a sound decision, obtain the current official quote for the exact tenure on the day you book. A headline annual rate can be misleading if it applies to a different term, customer category, deposit size, compounding method or withdrawal rule.

What you are comparing
Post Office Time Deposit
India Post calls this product the National Savings Time Deposit. Its official savings-schemes listing shows interest of 6.9% to 7.5% per annum, with the rate varying by period. The listing reviewed for this guide does not display a complete tenure-by-tenure schedule, so the range cannot be used to identify the rate for your exact maturity. Check the current scheme rules and rate information on the India Post savings page before opening an account.

Bank fixed deposit
A bank FD is a deposit booked with a particular bank for a stated tenure and rate. The rate can change by bank, term, deposit amount, customer category and product type. A rate card from one bank is therefore an example, not a market-wide answer to which option pays more.
#1 Best Overall
Current rate evidence: compare like with like
The following figures illustrate why the comparison must be specific. Central Bank of India’s displayed schedule is effective 10 August 2026 and applies to deposits below ₹3 crore. The rates are annual rates for that bank and schedule, not a promise about another bank or a later booking date.
| Tenure band | General customer | Senior citizen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year to less than 2 years | 6.10% per annum | 6.60% per annum |
| 2 years to less than 3 years | 6.25% per annum | 6.75% per annum |
| 3 years to less than 5 years | 6.00% per annum | 6.50% per annum |
Central Bank of India also publishes shorter-tenure bands, separate deposit-size categories and special products on its official term-deposit rate page. Those details may not match the three bands shown above.
India Post’s 6.9%–7.5% range should not be compared directly with the entire bank table and treated as a winner. The Post Office figure is a range without the exact term-by-term values in the reviewed listing, whereas the bank figures are for one institution, one date and a particular deposit bracket. Request both exact quotes for the same maturity, amount and customer status.
A step-by-step way to decide
1. Fix the purpose, amount and date
Write down the lump sum you are investing, the earliest date you may need it and the date by which you definitely need it. A deposit intended for a known liability should mature shortly before that liability; money that may be needed for an emergency should not be placed without checking the closure terms.
Record whether you need regular cash flow or want the largest possible maturity value. This determines whether a periodic-interest deposit or a cumulative deposit is appropriate.
2. Match the tenure exactly
Ask India Post and the chosen bank for the rate applying to the same number of months or years. “Three years” is not automatically the same product as “three years to less than five years,” and a one-year quote cannot answer a two-year decision. Keep the quote date with your notes because rates are changeable.
3. Match the amount and customer category
Tell both providers the intended principal and whether the depositor qualifies for a senior-citizen rate. Banks can use different brackets for deposits below or above a threshold; the Central Bank of India example above is specifically for deposits below ₹3 crore. Do not assume that a rate shown for a small deposit applies to a larger one.
4. Convert the quote into an actual cash-flow comparison
Ask for the maturity value or each scheduled interest payment, not only the annual percentage. Confirm whether the quote is an annual rate or a stated yield, how interest is compounded, and whether interest is paid monthly, quarterly, annually or only at maturity. A cumulative deposit may reinvest interest, while a periodic-payout deposit sends cash out instead; two accounts with the same displayed rate can therefore produce different cash flows.

5. Test the early-exit scenario
Assume you need the money six months or one year before maturity. Ask whether closure is permitted at that point, which rate would be used after closure, what penalty or reduction applies, how long payment takes and whether a non-callable variant is involved. Compare the resulting amount with the amount you would receive by staying to maturity.
6. Map protection to the amount
For a bank FD, total your principal and expected interest across every branch and account held at that bank in the same right and capacity. Compare that total with the DICGC insurance limit described below. If you use more than one bank, perform the calculation separately for each insured bank.
7. Check tax consequences for your situation
Obtain current tax guidance for your residential status, income level, age, tax regime and the way interest is paid. Product names alone do not establish that an account is tax-free or tax-efficient.
How to compare return rather than a headline rate
Annual rate versus maturity value
An annual percentage is only one input. The amount you actually receive depends on principal, tenure, compounding and whether interest is withdrawn during the term. Request a written illustration showing the principal, rate, interest credit dates, any reinvestment and the final maturity amount.
Use the same assumptions for both products. If one provider quotes a cumulative maturity value and the other quotes a quarterly payout, ask for an equivalent schedule or calculate the value of the payouts under the same reinvestment assumption. Do not compare a bank’s yield with a Post Office annual rate unless the definitions are the same.
Periodic income or growth
Choose periodic interest when predictable cash flow is more important than retaining all interest in the deposit. Choose cumulative treatment when you can leave the interest invested and want a single maturity receipt. Verify the exact payment frequency and whether the product permits your preferred option; the reviewed India Post listing does not provide those payout details.
Rate certainty and booking date
Rates are not permanent. Save the official rate card or account quotation used at booking, including its effective date and the deposit-size and customer-category conditions. A later web-page update should not be used to reconstruct the terms of an earlier booking.

Bank terms are product-specific
Central Bank of India states a 1% penal interest rate for premature withdrawal of its time deposits. It also states that a non-callable deposit does not permit premature withdrawal except under specified exceptions. These are that bank’s published terms for its described deposits, not universal rules for every bank FD.
Rank #3
The same bank displays an additional 0.50 percentage-point annual premium for senior citizens above age 60 on its time-deposit schemes. Ask how that premium is treated if the deposit is closed early; a quoted senior rate does not remove the need to read the penalty clause.
Post Office closure terms must be verified
The India Post listing reviewed here does not set out detailed premature-closure conditions. Before booking, obtain the current National Savings Time Deposit rules covering the earliest permitted closure, the interest payable after closure, any deduction and the process for receiving funds. Do not import a bank’s penalty into the Post Office product or assume that both products allow access on the same timetable.
Questions to ask before locking the money
- Is early closure allowed for this exact product and tenure?
- Does the provider recalculate interest at a lower rate, charge a stated penalty, or apply both?
- Are partial withdrawals, loans or overdrafts available, or is the entire deposit closed?
- What happens if the account is non-callable?
- Which document records the applicable rule and effective date?
Safety, insurance and what the ₹5 lakh limit means
DICGC protection for eligible bank deposits
The Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) covers eligible bank deposits, including fixed deposits, up to ₹5 lakh in total principal plus interest per depositor per insured bank, when held in the same right and capacity. The limit is not ₹5 lakh per account or per branch.
DICGC explains: “The deposits kept in different branches of a bank are aggregated for the purpose of insurance cover and a maximum amount of upto Rupees five lakhs is paid.” Read the corporation’s Guide to Deposit Insurance for the coverage rules and exceptions that apply to the bank you are considering.
For example, several FDs at different branches of the same bank are aggregated for the limit. Deposits at separate banks are considered separately under the stated per-bank cap, subject to each institution being an eligible insured bank and the accounts being in the relevant capacity. Any balance above the covered amount is not protected by that DICGC limit.
Do not equate DICGC insurance with the Post Office scheme
DICGC’s guide concerns insured bank deposits. India Post identifies the National Savings Time Deposit as a government postal savings scheme on its savings-services page, but the sources used here do not establish a specific DICGC-style insurance limit or the precise legal wording of any government backing for that scheme. Treat the two protection frameworks as different and read the applicable official rules rather than using “government” or “insured” as interchangeable labels.
Structuring a large bank deposit
If your priority is keeping each bank balance within the stated insurance cap, you can examine deposits at separately insured banks and calculate principal plus interest for each bank independently. This is an organizational choice, not a guarantee of a particular return, liquidity or tax result. Confirm insurance eligibility before transferring funds.

The Central Bank of India schedule cited above gives people over 60 an extra 0.50 percentage point per annum on its time-deposit schemes, reflected in the senior-citizen column. Eligibility may depend on the bank’s definition, documentation and product exclusions, so obtain confirmation before relying on the premium.

India Post’s reviewed listing does not provide a complete eligibility table for every National Savings Time Deposit situation. Ask the post office to confirm who may open the account, whether a senior-citizen distinction applies to the chosen term, the permitted holding arrangement and the documents required. Never transfer a deposit on the assumption that a bank’s age benefit is available in the postal scheme.
Tax treatment: make it a separate check
The available official pages do not settle an individual’s tax liability or provide a complete current comparison of deductions, reporting and withholding for every depositor. Interest treatment can depend on the saver’s circumstances and the tax rules in force for the relevant year.
Before investing, ask a qualified tax adviser or consult current official tax guidance about:

- when interest is recognized for tax purposes;
- whether cumulative interest must be tracked before maturity;
- any withholding or reporting triggered by the payment pattern;
- whether a deduction is available for the particular deposit, tenure and tax regime; and
- how premature closure changes the amount reported.
Do not describe either product as universally tax-free, and do not select a lower pre-tax rate solely because an assumed tax benefit has not been verified.

You need a known amount on a known date
Prioritize a maturity date that matches the liability, then compare the exact Post Office and bank quotes for that term. A slightly higher annual rate is not useful if the product matures too early, too late or imposes a costly exit rule when your date changes.
You need regular income
Compare payment frequency, the amount of each installment and what happens to unpaid or reinvested interest. Request a cash-flow schedule from both providers. A cumulative option may show a larger final figure but does not provide the periodic income you need.
You may need the money unexpectedly
Give liquidity greater weight than a small rate difference. Read the early-closure rule before booking and avoid a non-callable bank product when access is essential. Keep the institution’s written penalty and payment process with your deposit records.

Calculate principal plus interest across all branches and accounts at the same bank and in the same right and capacity. Decide whether the uninsured portion is acceptable or whether a different allocation among separately insured banks better fits your risk tolerance. The DICGC cap does not increase merely because you open another branch account.

You are over 60
Obtain the senior-citizen rate and the qualifying age definition in writing. In the cited Central Bank of India schedule, the premium is shown for people above 60; another provider may use different wording or conditions. Compare the senior quote with the Post Office quote for the same term rather than assuming the premium exists everywhere.
Booking-day checklist
- Capture the official rate. Record the URL, effective date, tenure band, deposit-size bracket and customer category.
- Confirm the principal and maturity. Check that the amount and exact maturity date match your plan.
- Choose the payout mode. Confirm cumulative or periodic payment, frequency and whether interest is reinvested.
- Obtain the maturity illustration. Ask for principal, interest credits, deductions or penalties and the final amount.
- Read the exit clause. Verify premature-closure eligibility, recalculation method, penalty and any non-callable restriction.
- Check protection. For a bank, aggregate all deposits in the same right and capacity and compare principal plus interest with the DICGC limit.
- Verify eligibility. Confirm age-related benefits and the account-holder categories accepted by the chosen scheme.
- Document tax questions. Keep the interest schedule and ask how it should be reported under your current tax circumstances.
- Store the records. Retain the receipt, account advice, rate sheet, nomination or holding instructions and the rules in force on the booking date.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing different tenures
A high rate for one period does not answer a question about another period. Put both offers on one line with the same start date, maturity date and principal.
Treating a range as an exact Post Office quote
The 6.9%–7.5% India Post range does not reveal which figure applies to your chosen term in the reviewed listing. Obtain the current term-specific rate before calculating.

Assuming one bank’s penalty applies to every FD
The 1% premature-withdrawal term and the non-callable condition cited here belong to Central Bank of India’s published schedule. Read the selected bank’s own rules.
Counting branches as separate insurance limits
DICGC aggregates eligible deposits at different branches of the same bank. Use the bank, not the branch, as the starting point for the ₹5 lakh calculation.
Locking emergency money into a product you cannot exit
Model the early-closure outcome before booking and retain a separate liquid reserve if your circumstances require immediate access.

The practical decision rule
Start with the exact amount and maturity you need. Get the current India Post term-specific quote and a dated quote from the bank you are actually considering. Compare the equivalent maturity value or cash-flow schedule, then apply the early-closure rule, DICGC calculation where relevant, age eligibility and your tax analysis. Choose the product whose complete terms fit your goal—not the one with the most attractive standalone percentage.
For official information, consult the India Post savings-schemes page, the bank’s current rate card, the DICGC insurance guide and the Department of Financial Services’ banking information. Rates, product rules and tax provisions can change, so verify them again when you place the deposit.
