Choose an NFT marketplace by matching four things before you connect a wallet: the blockchain your collection uses, the complete cost of the exact transaction, how creator earnings are enforced, and whether your wallet and security habits fit the workflow. There is no marketplace that is cheapest, safest, or best for every NFT. A low headline fee can be outweighed by network gas, a card-provider charge, an unenforced royalty, or a wallet that cannot sign the required transaction.
Use the live checkout total and signing request as the final authority. Fee figures in help centers are useful examples, but they can change and may apply only to a specific chain, transaction type, or collection.

1. Start with the blockchain and the exact transaction
An NFT marketplace is not interchangeable across chains. First identify the NFT’s network and contract, then confirm that the marketplace supports that network and the action you intend to take: buying at a fixed price, making an offer, accepting an offer, listing, minting, swapping, or transferring.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdentify the collection’s chain and contract
- Open the collection’s official information and the NFT’s details page.
- Record the blockchain name and contract address. A collection’s display name alone is not sufficient because fraudulent collections can copy names and artwork.
- Check that the marketplace displays the same contract and chain. Do not assume an asset can be moved between chains without a bridge or a new transaction.
Match the marketplace to the action
A platform fee can differ between a secondary sale, a primary drop, a swap, and a listing. Gas can also be charged at different points. For example, the buyer generally pays gas for a fixed-price purchase on OpenSea, while the seller generally pays gas when accepting an offer. Listing approvals can require gas as well. The transaction screen, not a generic fee page, determines what you will actually sign.

2. Compare the complete transaction cost
Calculate the cost as a stack of separate charges rather than comparing one percentage:
- Marketplace fee: the platform’s charge for the specific action.
- Creator earnings: a royalty or other creator payment, which may be optional or enforced by the contract.
- Blockchain gas: the network fee paid to validators for processing the transaction.
- Payment or provider charges: a card, on-ramp, swap, or other third-party fee that may appear at checkout.
- The asset price: the amount paid to the seller or minter.
Gas is not automatically part of the marketplace fee. OpenSea’s Help Center explains: “Gas fees are transaction fees paid to blockchain validators, not to OpenSea.” Network congestion can make the same action cost more at one time than another.
Published fee examples and their limits
| Marketplace and source date | Scope and action | Published platform fee | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenSea, Help Center article dated May 12, 2026 | NFT sale | Typically 1% | Prices can change; third-party provider fees and gas may still apply. |
| OpenSea, Help Center article dated May 12, 2026 | Primary-drop mint | 10% | This is the stated minting figure, not a universal secondary-sale rate. |
| OpenSea, Help Center article dated May 12, 2026 | Swap | 0% | A zero marketplace fee does not remove network or provider charges. |
| Magic Eden, Help Center article dated March 9, 2026 | Listing on its Solana marketplace | 0% | The article describes Solana; do not apply the figure to every Magic Eden chain or transaction. |
| Magic Eden, Help Center article dated March 9, 2026 | Transaction on its Solana marketplace | 2% | Verify the current checkout and the particular chain before acting. |
These figures are dated examples, not promises. OpenSea also documents collection-level fees, so two collections can produce different totals even when the platform is the same. Review the intended collection and the actual order before confirming.
Who pays gas?
The party responsible depends on the transaction. On OpenSea, a buyer pays gas for a fixed-price purchase; a seller pays gas when accepting an offer; and an approval required to list can also require gas. Other transaction paths can have different requirements. Keep enough of the correct network’s native token in the connected wallet, and wait for the wallet to show the estimated network fee before signing.
How to compare two checkouts
For each marketplace, write down the asset price, platform fee, creator-earnings amount, gas estimate, and any card or provider charge. Compare the final amount in the same currency and for the same transaction type. A platform with a lower percentage can still be more expensive if its network or provider charge is higher.
3. Understand royalties and creator earnings
Do not treat a creator’s stated percentage as a guaranteed payment on every resale. Three different settings are often confused:
- Preferred percentage: the amount the creator requests.
- Marketplace checkout setting: the amount a seller chooses to include when the platform permits optional earnings.
- Contract-level enforcement: code and marketplace infrastructure that can require payment when a compatible transaction is used.
Optional versus enforced earnings on OpenSea
OpenSea calls royalties “creator earnings” and distinguishes optional from enforced earnings. When earnings are optional, the seller can choose whether to include them. OpenSea identifies ERC721-C and ERC1155-C contract compatibility for its enforcement mechanism. Its documentation says this setup supports sales on OpenSea and on marketplaces using LimitBreak’s Payment Processor, currently including Magic Eden. Other marketplaces may use a different enforcement method or may not support the same configuration.

Magic Eden’s March 9, 2026 Solana help article says the creator sets the royalty amount and it is paid after a sale when the trader honors it or when the metadata enforces it. Inspect the NFT’s item-detail page for the stated percentage. This guidance is for that Solana marketplace context; it is not a rule for every chain or marketplace.

Checks for buyers and creators
- Buyers: inspect the creator-earnings line in the checkout total. If it is optional, understand that the seller may reduce or remove it.
- Creators: confirm the contract standard, the metadata, and the marketplaces that support its enforcement. A percentage shown on a collection page is not proof that every venue will honor it.
- Everyone: distinguish a royalty from a marketplace fee. They go to different parties and can both appear in one transaction.
4. Verify wallet and chain support
Your wallet must work with both the marketplace and the NFT’s blockchain. Compatibility with one platform does not establish compatibility elsewhere.
OpenSea’s documented wallet requirements
An OpenSea wallet article dated July 17, 2026 says the service supports wallets compatible with EIP-6963 and names MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and Robinhood Wallet as examples. The same article says OpenSea does not support multisignature wallets at that time. Wallet availability and transaction support can change, so check the current support page for the exact workflow.
Questions to answer before transferring an NFT
- Does the marketplace support the NFT’s blockchain and token standard?
- Can your wallet connect using the marketplace’s supported connection method?
- Is your wallet type supported, including any multisignature arrangement?
- Can the wallet display the network, recipient, token, approvals, and estimated gas in the signing prompt?
- Do you have the network’s native token for gas, rather than only a stablecoin or another asset?
OpenSea’s FAQ includes instructions for switching wallets among supported blockchains. Verify the intended chain and the receiving address before transferring. Sending an NFT or funds on the wrong network can require a separate recovery process and may not be reversible.
5. Evaluate security in two layers
A marketplace can provide warnings and account controls, but it cannot make an unsafe wallet action safe. Evaluate the platform and your own signing behavior separately.
Marketplace and account checks
- Navigate to the official marketplace site yourself instead of using an unsolicited link.
- Use the platform’s official support channel. OpenSea says it will not initiate social-media direct messages or ask for a seed phrase, password, or private key.
- Check the collection identity, contract address, token history, and seller details before buying.
- Review exactly what is being transferred and which permissions the transaction requests.
- Revoke or limit old smart-contract approvals when they are no longer needed, using a method you understand.
Recognize phishing patterns
OpenSea’s July 27, 2026 phishing guidance describes messages that imitate a buyer’s problem, create urgency, send you to a site that asks for a wallet signature, or demand a fee to complete a sale. A message that says a buyer cannot pay until you “verify” by signing elsewhere is a warning sign. OpenSea states: “We won’t DM you first on social media.”
Protect the wallet itself
Never disclose a secret recovery phrase or private key. OpenSea’s safety guidance says, “Your wallet’s secret recovery phrase is private to you and should never be shared, even with those you trust.” Download wallet software only from the provider’s official site, keep devices updated, and pause when a prompt is unexpected or unclear.
What a hardware wallet can and cannot do
A hardware wallet can add a separate signing device and keep key material away from a general-purpose computer. It does not identify a fake marketplace, stop phishing, or make a malicious approval safe. Confirm the destination, permissions, network, and amount on the device itself. Treat it as an additional layer, not a guarantee.
6. Choose according to your role
If you are buying a fixed-price NFT
- Confirm the collection contract and blockchain.
- Check that your wallet supports that chain and the marketplace connection method.
- Read the item page for creator earnings and inspect the checkout total.
- Compare the platform fee, gas estimate, and any provider charge with another supported venue.
- Approve only the transaction you intended, with the correct recipient and token visible in the wallet.
If you are making or accepting an offer
Determine who pays gas for the specific action. An offer may require one transaction to create and another to accept. If you are accepting as a seller, budget for the seller-side gas described by the marketplace. Check whether optional creator earnings are included in the order.

If you are listing or minting a collection
Separate the cost of a primary drop from a secondary listing. OpenSea’s cited figure is 10% for a primary-drop mint, while its typical NFT sale figure is 1%; those are different actions. Confirm the collection’s fee configuration and whether your contract supports the royalty enforcement path used by the venues where you expect sales.
If you use a multisignature wallet
Confirm support before moving assets. OpenSea’s July 17, 2026 wallet article says multisignature wallets were not supported at that time. A marketplace that cannot process your required approvals is not suitable for that transaction, even if it supports the underlying chain.
7. A five-minute pre-transaction checklist
- Chain: the collection, wallet, and marketplace all show the same intended network.
- Contract: the address matches an authoritative collection source.
- Fee: the current platform charge is visible for this exact action.
- Gas: the wallet shows the network estimate and you know which party pays it.
- Provider charge: any card, swap, or third-party fee is included in your calculation.
- Creator earnings: the percentage and whether it is optional or enforced are clear.
- Wallet: the connection method and wallet type are supported.
- Signature: the recipient, token, amount, approvals, and permissions match your intent.
- Source of the request: you reached the site independently and are not responding to an unsolicited support message.
8. Common mistakes and how to recover
Choosing by the lowest advertised percentage
Why it fails: the figure may apply to another chain or action, while gas and provider fees remain.
Fix: compare the final checkout total for the same NFT and transaction type, and recheck the date and scope of the fee statement.
Assuming every royalty is guaranteed
Why it fails: optional earnings depend on seller choice, and enforcement depends on contract and marketplace compatibility.
Fix: inspect the checkout as a buyer; as a creator, verify the contract standard, metadata, and supported enforcement venues.
Connecting a familiar wallet without checking the chain
Why it fails: a wallet can support one network or connection method while failing on another.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: verify chain, token standard, wallet type, and connection method before funding or transferring.

Following a “buyer support” link
Why it fails: phishing pages often imitate a marketplace, request a signature, or demand a fee.
Fix: close the message, open the official marketplace independently, and use its published support route. Never provide a recovery phrase, password, or private key.
Trusting a hardware wallet to prevent every loss
Why it fails: the device protects key handling but cannot judge a malicious contract or fake website for you.
Fix: read every prompt, verify the domain and contract, limit approvals, and reject requests you do not understand.
9. A practical decision rule
Choose the marketplace that passes all four gates for your transaction:
- Network gate: it supports the collection’s chain and token standard.
- Cost gate: the live total, including gas and provider charges, fits your budget.
- Earnings gate: the royalty treatment matches what you expect, with enforcement verified where it matters.
- Control gate: your wallet can connect and clearly display the transaction, and you can reach the site without relying on an unsolicited message.
If a marketplace fails any gate, a lower headline fee is not a reason to proceed. Recheck the current help-center terms immediately before signing because platform fees, wallet support, and enforcement integrations can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 0% marketplace fee mean an NFT purchase is free?
No. Network gas, creator earnings, and card or third-party provider charges can still apply. The live checkout and wallet estimate show the applicable total.
