Choose an account aggregator by testing it against your app’s real institution mix, countries, account types, data fields, consent journey, authentication paths, support requirements and total contract cost. A large advertised connection count is not proof that the banks your users rely on will connect successfully.
The defensible method is to define the exact financial task, build an anonymized list of target institutions, run the same pilot with every shortlisted provider, and compare written quotes and operational evidence under identical assumptions. Treat coverage, credential handling, data quality, consent controls, security and regulatory roles as separate decisions.

What an account aggregator does
An account aggregator is an intermediary that connects a financial app to banks and other institutions, obtains consumer-permissioned information, and delivers the permitted data through an API or software development kit. It can spare your team from building and maintaining a separate integration for every institution. In the European Union’s PSD2 context, the OECD describes this trade-off as potentially reducing an app’s licensing-related time and integration effort while adding another intermediary and another cost. The legal and operational result depends on your market and the roles assigned to your company and the provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe aggregator is not automatically the system of record. Your app still decides what information to request, what to store, how long to retain it, how to explain the authorization, and how to respond when a connection expires or data is wrong. Selecting a provider is therefore an architecture, product, security and compliance decision rather than a simple API-shopping exercise.

Start with the app’s job and minimum data set
Write the user task in one sentence before speaking with vendors. “Show a consolidated balance,” “verify income for an underwriting decision,” “categorize spending,” “initiate a payment,” and “display investment holdings” require different products, permissions, refresh behavior and risk controls. If the task is vague, vendors will quote different scopes and the comparison will be meaningless.
Map each task to required fields
- Account display: usually needs account names, types, current and available balances, institution identity and a timestamp.
- Transaction analysis: needs transaction amount, date, description, pending status, account identifier, merchant or category fields where available, and a defined historical window.
- Ownership or identity verification: may require account-holder names, account status and institution-confirmed identity fields. Establish whether joint, business and trust accounts are in scope.
- Lending or affordability: may require liabilities, recurring income indicators, transaction history and refreshes that are more frequent than a one-time account view.
- Investments, insurance or loans: require products beyond ordinary bank-account data and may fall under open-finance coverage rather than basic open banking.
- Payment initiation: requires a provider product and authorization flow that explicitly supports payments; read-only account aggregation is not enough.
Create a data dictionary with a required, useful or optional status for every field. Record whether your workflow can proceed when a field is absent, delayed, estimated or returned in a different format. Requesting data “just in case” expands consent, privacy exposure and storage obligations without improving the user outcome.
Distinguish open banking from open finance
Plaid’s consumer-facing explanation describes open banking as primarily the sharing of bank-account information, while open finance includes broader consumer-permissioned data such as loans, credit, investments and insurance. Use the narrower product when it satisfies the task. If your app needs broader holdings or liability data, confirm that the provider’s open-finance product, the target institution and the specific fields are all supported in the launch markets. A provider’s use of the term “open finance” does not establish that every category or institution is available.
Test coverage against your users, not a headline number
Build an anonymized coverage inventory before requesting proposals. Include the institutions most likely to be used by your customers, the countries where you will launch, and the account types that create edge cases. Separate retail and business accounts, checking and savings, credit cards, loans, investments, joint accounts and accounts held through regional brands or credit unions when they matter to the product.
What to ask each candidate to map
- Whether each priority institution is supported in the required country and edition of the product.
- Which connection method is used at that institution: OAuth, a direct API, an intermediary credential flow, or a manual fallback.
- Which account types and data fields are returned, including historical transaction depth and pending-transaction treatment.
- Whether the institution requires an additional redirect, multifactor challenge, device approval or periodic reauthentication.
- What happens when the institution changes its login, consent screen, certificate or API behavior.
Ask for a written mapping, then validate it in a sandbox and a controlled production pilot. Coverage can differ by institution, region, account type and time; a provider’s total connection count cannot substitute for your own success-rate evidence. The available vendor materials describe products but do not provide a neutral comparison for your customer base.
Include difficult accounts in the sample
Do not test only the easiest national banks. Include institutions with OAuth redirects, multifactor authentication, older web interfaces, joint ownership, business permissions, credit products and investment data if those cases appear in your expected mix. Define a minimum acceptable completion rate for each priority segment before the pilot starts. Keep the institution list anonymized when sharing it externally, and avoid using real customer credentials in evaluation environments unless your security and legal teams have approved the process.

Compare authentication and credential handling by institution
Connection method affects security architecture and user experience. OAuth or a direct institution API generally redirects the user to the institution or uses a token exchange, while some non-OAuth flows involve an intermediary handling credentials. Do not assume that a provider uses one method everywhere.
OAuth and direct API connections
Plaid’s consumer documentation states that OAuth or API connections do not store account credentials in the connection flow. The user authenticates with the institution, grants permissions, and the app receives tokens or data through the provider. Confirm token expiration, refresh behavior, scopes, redirect domains, multifactor prompts and what your app must do when consent is withdrawn.
Non-OAuth intermediary flows
Plaid also explains that some non-OAuth connections involve Plaid storing credentials. The institution determines which path is available, so the same provider can have different credential consequences across banks. Ask where credentials are entered, whether they are stored, how they are encrypted and isolated, who can access them, how rotation works, and what happens after a failed login. Your security review should treat this as an institution-specific control rather than a provider-wide label.
Direct API claims need evidence
MX states on its Data Access product that “Consumers never have to share their username and password.” That is an MX product statement, not an independent finding about every aggregator or every institution. Ask MX or any other candidate to identify the institutions and flows covered by the statement, then verify the behavior during the pilot. Request current security documentation, audit reports or equivalent evidence under confidentiality terms when appropriate.
Make consent and data lifecycle part of the product design
Consent is more than a one-time link screen. For each data product, document what the consumer sees, what the consumer authorizes, what the aggregator receives, what reaches your systems, and how the consumer can later review or revoke access.
Design the authorization explanation
- Name the data categories and the purpose in language that matches the feature.
- State whether data is read-only or can be used to initiate an action.
- Identify your company and the intermediary, including the role each plays.
- Explain refresh frequency, historical depth and any limits that affect the feature.
- Tell the user what happens if they decline, connect only some accounts or later revoke permission.
Provide control after connection
Users need a visible way to see connected institutions, permissions and the last successful refresh. MX describes a consent dashboard for managing and revoking access. Plaid lists connection and permission-management tools for institutional partners. Treat those descriptions as capabilities to verify in the exact product and market you will deploy, not as a substitute for your own consent design.

Specify revocation, deletion and retention
Define the sequence when a user disconnects an institution: stop refresh jobs, invalidate tokens, mark cached data as unusable, delete or anonymize stored records according to your retention policy, and record an auditable event. Establish what the aggregator deletes, what your app must delete, and whether backups or derived analytics follow a different schedule. A user-facing disconnect button is incomplete if background jobs can continue fetching data.
Evaluate data quality, freshness and failure behavior
Two providers can return the same field names with different semantics. Ask for schemas and examples showing how balances, pending transactions, reversals, duplicate transactions, merchant names, account ownership and historical data are represented. Record whether values are institution-sourced, normalized, estimated or unavailable.
Define measurable pilot outcomes
- Completion: the percentage of invited users who finish authorization without abandoning.
- Connection success: the percentage of target institutions that produce a usable account and the required fields.
- Field coverage: the proportion of required fields populated correctly for each account type.
- Freshness: time from an institution update to the value becoming available to your app.
- Historical depth: the oldest transaction date returned under the quoted product.
- Reauthentication: frequency, warning time and user steps when access expires.
- Error recovery: whether the user receives a clear next action and whether your support team can diagnose the failure.
The reviewed materials do not report independent, app-specific uptime, data-quality or connection-success benchmarks. Do not invent a percentage or treat a marketing figure as a neutral performance guarantee. Collect the measurements yourself under a documented test plan.

Review security, reliability and support as operational requirements
Request current documentation for encryption, token storage, access controls, environment separation, logging, incident response, vulnerability management and independent assurance. Match the evidence to your threat model: an app handling balances has different consequences from one making lending decisions or initiating payments.
Ask how incidents are handled
- Where can your team see institution outages, degraded connections and planned maintenance?
- What notification channel and response time apply to security incidents and data corruption?
- Can support trace a failed connection using a request identifier without viewing credentials or unnecessary personal data?
- What escalation path exists for a priority institution that fails at launch?
- Are service-level commitments contractual, and do they cover the specific data products you will use?
Separate platform availability from usable financial data. An API can be reachable while an institution feed is stale, incomplete or returning authorization errors. Require institution-level reporting in the pilot and contract discussions where the feature depends on it.
Estimate integration effort and long-term maintenance
Compare the full developer experience, not just the first successful API call. Review SDK language support, API consistency, documentation quality, sandbox realism, webhook behavior, versioning policy, test credentials, observability and migration tooling. Confirm who owns institution-specific fixes and how quickly changes are communicated.

Architecture questions to settle early
- Will your backend receive normalized records directly, or will it call the aggregator for every screen view?
- Which identifiers remain stable when an account is relinked or an institution changes its connection method?
- How will you deduplicate transactions across refreshes and handle late-arriving updates?
- Can webhooks trigger refreshes, or must your system poll on a schedule?
- How will you isolate tenant data, redact logs and prevent support tools from exposing sensitive fields?
- What is the migration path if you add a second provider or leave the first one?
Document an abstraction layer around provider-specific identifiers and error codes. That does not mean you must operate two aggregators; it preserves an exit option if coverage, pricing or reliability changes. The extra engineering is justified only when the expected resilience or market reach exceeds its maintenance cost.

Use the same institution list, user journeys, data fields and success definitions for every candidate. A pilot should test both the happy path and recovery from predictable failures.
- Freeze the scope. Record launch countries, priority institutions, account types, required fields, refresh cadence, consent language and the maximum acceptable latency.
- Prepare test cases. Include OAuth redirects, non-OAuth flows where applicable, multifactor prompts, expired sessions, revoked permissions, duplicate accounts, joint ownership and missing optional fields.
- Execute the same journeys. Use equivalent devices, network conditions and account states. Timestamp each authorization, data receipt, refresh and error.
- Validate the payload. Compare returned values with the institution’s displayed information, checking balance sign, pending status, transaction dates, ownership and historical limits.
- Exercise recovery. Revoke consent, change an institution password, trigger a reauthentication request, simulate an outage and verify that the user and support team receive actionable messages.
- Measure support. Open equivalent technical questions and record response time, diagnosis quality and escalation behavior.
- Write the results. Report completion, institution-level success, field coverage, freshness, reauthentication and recovery outcomes by segment. Do not average away a critical institution failure.
Keep the pilot evidence separate from vendor demonstrations. A successful demo proves that one path worked once; the pilot shows whether your expected users can complete the journey repeatedly and whether your operations team can recover when it fails.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare total cost and contract terms on identical assumptions
The reviewed materials do not disclose comparable pricing for the providers discussed. Obtain written quotes rather than comparing public starting prices or sales estimates. Give every candidate the same assumptions:
| Cost area | Questions to put in the quote |
|---|---|
| Implementation | Are setup, solution engineering, certification or migration services charged separately? |
| Usage basis | Is billing based on active users, connected accounts, successful connections, API calls, refreshes, data products or another unit? |
| Minimums | Are there monthly minimums, annual commitments, tier resets or overage rates? |
| Data products | Are transactions, identity, liabilities, investments, payment initiation and enrichment included or priced separately? |
| Refreshes and webhooks | Do scheduled refreshes, historical backfills, retries or webhook delivery incur additional charges? |
| Support and service levels | Which support tier, response times, incident commitments and status access are included? |
| Contract term | What are renewal, price-change, suspension and termination provisions? |
| Exit and migration | Can you export connection metadata and permitted records, and what assistance is available when moving providers? |
Model at least three volumes: launch, expected growth and a stress case with unusually frequent refreshes or reauthentication. Include engineering time for institution fixes, monitoring, support tickets, legal review and data migration. A lower unit price can be more expensive if it produces more failed connections that your support team must resolve.
Check regulatory fit for each launch market
Do not assume that an aggregator’s presence in one jurisdiction settles your obligations in another. Establish whether your company, the provider or both are acting as an account-information or payment service, whether accreditation or licensing applies, and which privacy, consumer-protection, security and data-residency rules govern the flow.

The OECD discussion of aggregators and EU PSD2 is explicitly jurisdictional. Use it to understand the intermediary trade-off, then obtain current advice for each launch country. Assign responsibility in the contract for consent records, incident notifications, data-subject requests, subcontractors, cross-border transfers and regulator communications.
Use a decision matrix instead of a universal winner
Create a pass/fail gate for non-negotiable requirements, then score the remaining candidates with the same evidence. A simple 0–2 scale works: 0 means unsupported or unverified, 1 means partially supported or dependent on exceptions, and 2 means demonstrated in the pilot or backed by a contractually relevant commitment.
| Decision axis | Evidence to require | Gate question |
|---|---|---|
| Target-market coverage | Institution-level mapping and pilot results by country and account type | Can priority users connect and receive usable data? |
| Data scope and quality | Schema, field tests, freshness and historical-depth measurements | Does the workflow still work when optional fields are missing? |
| Authentication and security | Method by institution, token lifecycle, credential controls and assurance evidence | Can your security model tolerate every connection path? |
| Consent and control | Authorization copy, dashboards, revocation and deletion procedures | Can users understand and control access throughout the relationship? |
| Reliability and support | Institution-level monitoring, incident process and support tests | Can your team detect and recover from failures? |
| Integration effort | SDK, API, sandbox, webhooks, documentation and maintenance plan | Can you ship and operate the integration with available staff? |
| Total cost and contract | Comparable quote, minimums, overages, SLA and exit terms | Is the cost acceptable at launch, growth and stress volumes? |
| Regulatory fit | Written role allocation and market-specific compliance review | Are licensing, privacy and consumer duties assigned clearly? |
Choose the provider that clears every mandatory gate and offers the strongest evidence for the risks your app cannot absorb. Keep a second provider or a manual verification path only when its incremental coverage or resilience justifies the extra integration, monitoring and contract burden.
Common selection mistakes and practical fixes
Choosing by connection count
Failure: selecting the provider with the largest advertised number of institutions. Fix: test the anonymized priority list and report results by institution, country and account type.
Assuming credentials are never involved
Failure: treating OAuth marketing language as a guarantee for every bank. Fix: record the actual method for each target institution and complete a credential-handling review for non-OAuth paths.
Requesting every available data category
Failure: expanding permissions because the API makes more fields available. Fix: tie each requested field to a user task, explain it in consent copy and remove fields that do not affect the feature.
Ignoring the post-connection lifecycle
Failure: building only the initial link screen. Fix: implement status visibility, reauthentication messaging, revocation, deletion, retries and support diagnostics before launch.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Comparing prices with different assumptions
Failure: comparing one vendor’s per-user quote with another’s per-refresh quote. Fix: provide identical user, account, product, refresh and support assumptions and calculate total operating cost.
Treating a demonstration as a benchmark
Failure: generalizing from a successful demo or an unqualified uptime claim. Fix: run equivalent pilots, preserve raw timestamps and make no winner claim beyond the tested scope.
