How to Choose a Social Security Claiming Age When You Expect to Keep Working

There is no universally best Social Security claiming age for someone who plans to keep working. The right choice comes from comparing your date-of-birth-specific full retirement age (FRA), your projected wages or net self-employment income, your estimated benefit at several starting ages, and how much income you need now. Two separate issues must be kept apart: claiming before FRA permanently lowers the monthly benefit, while the retirement earnings test can temporarily withhold benefits when your work earnings exceed an annual limit. Delaying after FRA raises the monthly benefit through age 70, and continued work can sometimes raise it further by replacing a lower year in Social Security’s 35-year earnings calculation.

This is a planning framework, not an individualized claiming recommendation. Use your own estimates from the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA), confirm the rules for the calendar year in which you claim, and account for household and financial circumstances that are unique to you.

Start with the three decisions you are actually making

Working and claiming are related, but they are not the same decision. You can choose when to stop working independently of when to start retirement benefits. A useful analysis separates three questions:

  • When will you claim? Starting before FRA generally produces a permanently lower monthly benefit than starting at FRA. Starting after FRA earns delayed retirement credits until age 70.
  • How will current earnings affect checks? Before FRA, wages and net self-employment earnings above the applicable limit can cause SSA to withhold some benefits. Once you reach FRA, the earnings limit no longer applies beginning with that month.
  • Will additional work improve your benefit record? SSA uses your highest 35 years of earnings. A new, higher year can replace a lower or zero year; if it does not, working longer may not increase the calculated benefit.

SSA’s official FAQ, updated January 2, 2026, states: “You can get Social Security retirement benefits and work at the same time.” The practical question is how much of the scheduled benefit will be payable while you work, what amount is permanently established by your claiming age, and whether delaying gives you a better fit for your cash flow and longevity risk.

Determine your full retirement age before comparing ages

FRA is the age at which you qualify for your unreduced retirement benefit under Social Security’s age-based formula. It depends on your birth date. For people born in 1960 or later, SSA lists an FRA of 67; people born earlier can have a different FRA. Do not assume that turning 65 is your FRA.

Find your exact FRA in your personal SSA information and use it to identify the relevant earnings-test rule. The calendar year in which you reach FRA is treated differently from a year in which you remain below FRA throughout. FRA is also the point at which the earnings test stops reducing retirement benefits, starting with the month you reach it.

How the 2026 earnings test works

The earnings test applies only while you are below FRA. It is not a tax on every dollar you earn and it does not permanently erase the benefit amount established by your claiming age. SSA withholds benefits when counted earnings exceed the applicable threshold, then adjusts the benefit calculation at FRA to account for months in which benefits were withheld.

Under FRA for all of 2026

If you are below FRA throughout 2026, SSA lists an annual earnings limit of $24,480. For every $2 earned above that amount, SSA deducts $1 in benefits. This rule uses earnings from employment, not your total household income.

Reaching FRA during 2026

If you reach FRA in 2026, SSA counts earnings only through the month before the month you reach FRA. The 2026 limit for that period is $65,160, and SSA deducts $1 for every $3 above the limit. Beginning with the month you reach FRA, there is no earnings limit on retirement benefits.

For example, someone who reaches FRA in September 2026 is subject to the higher limit only for earnings counted through August. Earnings in September and later do not reduce retirement benefits under the earnings test.

What earnings count

SSA counts wages and net earnings from self-employment. Its work-and-benefits guidance says bonuses, commissions and vacation pay count as earnings for this test. Pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits, and other government or military retirement benefits do not count for this particular earnings limit.

If you live or work outside the United States, different work rules may apply. Do not apply the domestic thresholds automatically to an overseas work situation.

The special monthly rule for a mid-year first claim

Annual earnings can give a misleading result when you first claim partway through a year. SSA’s special earnings-limit rule may let you receive a full check for an entire month treated as retired even when your annual earnings exceed the yearly limit. For 2026, SSA lists a monthly amount of $2,040 for someone below FRA all year and $5,430 for someone reaching FRA in 2026. The rule has month-by-month conditions, and self-employed people must also consider whether they performed substantial services in the business.

Use this rule for a specific first-claim timeline rather than assuming that an annual salary automatically disqualifies every month. Confirm the applicable months and report your work pattern to SSA.

Compare the three claiming paths

Path What happens to the benefit What to compare
Claim before FRA while working The monthly amount is permanently reduced for claiming early. Before FRA, excess counted earnings can also cause temporary withholding. Your SSA estimate at the proposed start age; wages or net self-employment income by calendar year; the checks likely to be payable after withholding; and your need for current income.
Claim at FRA while working You avoid an age reduction for claiming early, and beginning in the FRA month earnings no longer reduce retirement benefits. Your exact FRA; the estimate at that age; your cash-flow needs; and whether continued earnings will improve the 35-year record.
Work and delay beyond FRA Delayed retirement credits increase the monthly amount through age 70. Additional earnings may also improve the earnings record if they replace lower years. Estimates at plausible later ages; how you will fund the delay; how long you expect to work; and the effect of new earnings on your record.

SSA says there is no increase for delaying beyond age 70. If you are considering a later start, compare ages up to 70 rather than postponing indefinitely.

A sound choice starts with your own SSA numbers. The following process keeps the earnings test, age adjustment and earnings record separate.

  1. Confirm your birth date and FRA. Record the exact month in which you reach FRA, not just the year.
  2. Pull benefit estimates for several start ages. Use your personal SSA account or SSA’s retirement calculators to obtain estimates for an early age you are considering, your FRA, and one or more ages after FRA, up to 70. Save the assumptions and the date on which each estimate was generated.
  3. Map earnings by calendar year. List expected wages and net self-employment earnings for each year in which you would receive benefits before FRA. Separate employment earnings from pensions, investments and other income that does not enter this test.
  4. Apply the correct earnings-test rule. Use the under-FRA annual rule for a year in which you remain below FRA, the higher year-of-FRA rule for earnings through the month before FRA, and the special monthly rule when a first claim begins during the year. The 2026 dollar amounts are annual figures and can change in later years.
  5. Estimate payable cash flow. Do not treat the headline monthly estimate as the amount you will necessarily receive while the earnings test applies. Model the checks expected after any withholding, month by month when your work or claim begins mid-year.
  6. Check whether work can replace a low year. Review your earnings record and identify the lowest or zero years among the 35 years SSA uses. A new year helps only if it is high enough to replace one of those years.
  7. Compare the purpose of each dollar. Decide whether starting earlier would fund a necessary expense, preserve other assets, or simply provide discretionary income. Compare that use with the larger later monthly amount created by waiting.
  8. Run multiple work-duration scenarios. Calculate at least one case in which you stop work earlier than expected and one in which you continue longer. A claiming age that works only if your job lasts for many years is not robust to a change in employment.

Do not use a generic break-even age as a universal answer. A break-even calculation must use your own estimates, the months affected by withholding, taxes and the assumptions about future work and longevity. The available evidence does not establish one break-even result for everyone.

Understand the permanent effect of claiming early

Starting before FRA locks in a lower monthly benefit than waiting to FRA. The earnings test is separate: withholding because of excess work earnings does not turn an early claim into an FRA claim. A person can therefore face both effects at once—an age-based reduction in the underlying monthly amount and temporary withholding while earnings exceed the limit.

At FRA, SSA recalculates the benefit to account for months in which benefits were withheld under the earnings test. This is an adjustment to the monthly benefit calculation, not a promise of an immediate lump-sum refund for every withheld check. The result depends on the months and amounts involved.

How continued work can raise—or fail to raise—the benefit

SSA calculates retirement benefits using your highest 35 years of earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, zero years fill the remaining slots. A continuing worker may replace a zero year or a lower year with a higher one, potentially increasing the benefit.

More work does not automatically produce a larger check. If the new earnings are below the lowest year already counted in your 35-year record, they may not change the calculation. Ask SSA to review your record each year; SSA also checks whether additional earnings increase the monthly benefit.

This creates two independent effects of working longer:

  • Record effect: additional earnings can improve the 35-year average when they replace a lower year.
  • Claiming-age effect: delaying the start date avoids an early-claim reduction and, after FRA, earns delayed retirement credits through age 70.

Do not assume that working longer and claiming later are interchangeable. You can work longer but claim early, claim at FRA and keep working, or delay while continuing to work; each combination produces a different result.

Cash-flow, health and household factors to put beside the SSA estimate

The dollar comparison is necessary but not sufficient. Before choosing, document the circumstances that could make one start date more practical:

  • Current spending need: If benefits would cover essential expenses, delaying may require withdrawals from savings or other income. Model whether that draw is sustainable rather than assuming it is costless.
  • Ability to keep working: Your plan should account for the possibility of reduced hours, a layoff, caregiving or a health change.
  • Health and longevity expectations: A larger delayed benefit is paid later, so the value of waiting depends partly on how long you expect to receive it. Avoid using a generic life-expectancy assumption as if it were a personal forecast.
  • Household decisions: A spouse’s or partner’s claiming plan, survivor needs and the timing of other household income can change the value of your own start date. These issues require household-specific analysis.
  • Taxes and other programs: Tax treatment, Medicare interactions and public-pension rules are separate questions. The earnings-test figures above concern Social Security retirement benefits and should not be presented as a complete tax or benefits plan.

These factors do not change the 2026 earnings-test mechanics, but they can change which cash-flow path is workable for you.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing withholding with a permanent penalty

Excess earnings before FRA can lead to withheld checks, while claiming early creates a lower underlying monthly amount. Keep both calculations visible in your worksheet.

Using the annual limit after the month of FRA

The year-of-FRA rule counts earnings only through the month before FRA. Starting with the FRA month, the retirement earnings limit no longer applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting the wrong income

Use wages and net self-employment earnings for the test. Do not add investment income, interest, pensions or annuities simply because they appear on your tax return.

Ignoring a mid-year claim

If you claim after leaving work partway through a year, evaluate the special monthly rule and the actual months worked. An annual total alone may not determine whether a particular month’s benefit is payable.

Assuming every additional work year raises the check

Inspect the 35-year record first. New earnings must replace a lower or zero year to improve the calculation.

Applying 2026 figures forever

The limits of $24,480, $65,160, $2,040 and $5,430 are SSA’s 2026 figures. Recheck the current SSA guidance for the year in which you claim, because annual thresholds can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A one-page worksheet for your claiming decision

Put these items in one table or spreadsheet and update it when your work forecast changes:

  • Your birth month and year, exact FRA month and target claim month.
  • SSA benefit estimates at each candidate start age, including age 70 if relevant.
  • Expected wages and net self-employment earnings for every year before FRA.
  • Months in which you expect to work and claim simultaneously.
  • Estimated benefit checks payable after applying the appropriate earnings rule.
  • The lowest years in your 35-year earnings record and the new earnings that might replace them.
  • Essential spending, other reliable income and the savings draw required under each start-date scenario.
  • Household, health and survivor considerations that make one scenario more or less resilient.

When an assumption changes, update the affected year and rerun the comparison rather than relying on an old estimate.

When to get individualized help

Consider a qualified retirement-income or Social Security claiming analysis if you have overlapping work and self-employment income, a mid-year first claim, a complicated household claiming plan, or a large difference between your estimated early and delayed benefits. A professional should work from your SSA estimates and clearly show assumptions, fees and the effect of changing your work timeline. You can first use SSA’s own online tools and publications so you understand the baseline numbers being analyzed.
