Choose by the support commitment for the exact model—not just the phone brand—and check whether you can get it repaired where you live. Compare how long OS and security updates are promised, when that clock starts, how long parts remain available, which repair routes serve your country, and what a battery or screen repair could mean for your total cost of ownership.
A seven-year software promise is valuable only if the phone remains usable and repairable during those years. Google’s stated seven-year commitment for Pixel 8 and later, Samsung’s seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for Galaxy S24, and Fairphone 5’s longer parts-support commitment illustrate why updates and repair access should be evaluated separately.

Compare the exact model’s dated update commitment and repair options in your country. A brand-wide claim or a vague phrase such as “long-term support” is not enough: the model, support-clock start, update type, parts availability and repair channel all affect how long you can reasonably keep the device.
Use this order to narrow your choices:
- Identify the exact model. Record the model name and variant, its launch or first-sale date, and the date the manufacturer says support begins. Similar phones from one manufacturer can have different commitments.
- Separate OS upgrades from security updates. Record each duration independently. OS upgrades bring new operating-system versions; security updates address security issues. A commitment for one should not be assumed to promise the other for the same period.
- Check parts and timing. Look for a published parts list, how long parts will remain available after sales end, and whether delivery times are stated. Availability of a battery alone does not establish that a screen, charging connector or other commonly needed part can also be obtained.
- Confirm local repair routes. Check for manufacturer service, authorized or independent providers, mail-in service and self-repair access in your country. Confirm that the route covers your exact model.
- Compare warranty and durability details. Record the warranty term and check what the manufacturer says about water and dust protection, drop protection and the effect of self-repair on coverage.
- Estimate ownership cost. Consider the purchase price alongside likely repair needs and the years you expect to use the phone. Do not treat a long update promise as proof that repairs will be affordable.
Where available, use the EU energy label and repairability information as additional evidence. Then check the manufacturer’s model-specific support information: a label can help with comparison, but it is not a substitute for confirming the update commitment and service options for the phone you plan to buy.

How long will these phones get updates?
The evidence below shows three different kinds of commitments. Google and Samsung state OS and security support separately or together; Fairphone’s cited commitment describes software support without separately specifying those two durations.
| Phone | Published software commitment | Other relevant commitment | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of OS and security updates, starting when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US | Google support documentation; clock begins at first US Google Store availability, not when an individual buyer purchases the phone | |
| Samsung Galaxy S24 | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates | IP68 water resistance and dust protection | Samsung Galaxy S24 Product Environmental Report, 2024 |
| Fairphone 5 | Eight years of software support | Five-year warranty; hardware and spare-parts support until at least 2031; ten replaceable modules | Fairphone Impact Report 2024 |
These figures are not directly interchangeable. Google expresses its commitment in years and specifies a US availability date as the start; Samsung reports a number of OS generations as well as a security-update duration; Fairphone reports a software-support duration without the same split in the cited material. Compare each phone using the terms its manufacturer actually publishes rather than converting an OS-generation count into a number of calendar years.
Also distinguish a promise from a prediction. A model’s support period is useful for budgeting only when the start date and duration are clear. If a retailer says a phone is “supported for seven years” but does not identify whether that means OS upgrades, security updates or both, check the manufacturer’s model-specific statement before relying on it.
What does the EU smartphone rule change?
For covered smartphones placed on the EU market under rules applying from 20 June 2025, ecodesign requirements set minimum expectations for repair access, spare parts, battery durability and operating-system upgrades. They establish a baseline, not a reason to skip checking a particular model’s service coverage.
The European Commission describes the rules as minimum requirements for mobile phones, cordless phones and tablets sold on the EU market, intended to improve durability, repairability and update availability. For smartphones, the cited requirements include:
- Operating-system upgrades available for at least five years from the end of placement on the market.
- Critical spare parts supplied to professional repairers within five to ten working days and kept available for seven years after the end of sales.
- Battery durability of at least 800 charge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity.
- Covered parts that include batteries, front and rear cameras, charging connectors, buttons, microphones, speakers and fold mechanisms.
The timing matters. The five-year OS period is measured from when the last unit is placed on the market, not from when you buy your individual phone. The spare-parts period is described as seven years after sales end. Those are different clocks, and neither should be casually read as “five or seven years from purchase.” The Commission’s stated requirements concern the EU market; do not assume they guarantee the same parts supply or repair route in another country.

The rule also does not make every repair free, ensure that every local shop will work on every model, or establish the price of a replacement part. For an individual buyer, the model’s local service options and repair costs still matter. Where an EU energy label or repairability information is available, use it to add context to the manufacturer’s own support terms.
Can I still get a battery or screen in five years?
Do not infer future parts availability from the phone’s update promise. Check whether the manufacturer publishes a parts list and a post-sale availability period, and whether your country has a repair provider or self-repair route for the exact model.
Ask the following questions before buying:
- Is a replacement battery listed for this model, and is there a stated availability period?
- Can you find a screen and charging connector as well as the battery?
- Are delivery times stated, and do they apply to professional repairers, consumers or both?
- Does the repair route require a particular provider, tool, calibration or other process?
- Is the part and repair service actually offered in your country?
Parts breadth is important because the most consequential repair may not be a battery replacement. The EU regulation’s covered-parts list includes screens’ neighboring components such as cameras, as well as charging connectors, buttons, microphones, speakers and fold mechanisms. That list is a useful reminder to examine more than one component; it does not establish that every part is equally easy or inexpensive to replace.
For a phone sold in the EU under the cited rules, the stated seven-year availability period after sales end and five-to-ten-working-day supply requirement for critical parts apply to professional repairers. They should not be mistaken for a promise that a consumer can order every part directly, that a nearby shop has it in stock, or that every repair will be completed within that delivery window.

Repair coverage is a local service question, not just a manufacturer specification. Before buying, check the provider directory or service information for the country where you will use the phone, and confirm that the listed route accepts your model.
Manufacturer service and independent repair
Samsung’s US support information describes in-store and mail-in repair, as well as self-repair. It says repairs use genuine Samsung parts and that parts are available for at least three years after production ends. This is a manufacturer service statement for the US; compare it with the longer EU legal baseline where that baseline applies, and do not treat it as a worldwide commitment.

Apple documents several repair routes: Apple Stores, Authorized Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers with access to genuine parts, and Self Service Repair for selected models and regions. Apple also provides Parts and Service History so owners can see whether a repair used genuine, used or unknown parts. Availability and warranty treatment vary by country and model, so verify those details for the phone and location in question.
What to verify about self-repair
A self-repair option can improve access to parts, but its practical value depends on the exact model, region and repair requirements. Before choosing a phone on that basis, check the manufacturer’s instructions, part availability, any stated calibration requirements and whether doing the repair affects warranty coverage. The existence of a self-repair program does not by itself prove that a repair is simple, inexpensive or available where you live.
Is a more repairable phone worth paying more for?
It can be, if the extra upfront cost is outweighed by a longer useful life or a repair you can actually obtain. There is no universal break-even price without the purchase price, repair charges, parts availability and the number of years you expect to keep the phone.
Use a simple comparison for each candidate:
- Upfront cost: what you pay for the exact model.
- Expected use: how long you intend to keep it, taking the update clock into account.
- Repair exposure: whether a battery, screen or other part can be sourced locally through a route you would use.
- Ownership duration: whether the warranty and support commitments cover the period you realistically expect to own the device.
Then compare the cost of keeping the phone against replacing it earlier. Use actual local repair quotes if available; the commitments summarized here do not establish current repair prices. A phone with more replaceable modules may offer a practical path to keeping it in service, but the number of modules alone does not reveal the cost or convenience of each repair.
Fairphone 5 is a useful example of a package that combines support and repair claims: Fairphone reports ten replaceable modules, a five-year warranty, eight years of software support and hardware and spare-parts support until at least 2031 in its 2024 Impact Report. Those statements make it worth considering if repairability is a priority, but they do not provide a local repair price or establish that every part will be equally available in every country.

| Comparison item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Identity | Exact model and variant |
| Support start | Launch, first-sale or other stated start date, including the market used to define it |
| OS upgrades | Duration or generation count, in the manufacturer’s own terms |
| Security updates | Duration and any stated start date |
| Parts | Covered components, availability period and stated delivery timing |
| Repair access | Local manufacturer, authorized, independent or self-repair route |
| Warranty and durability | Warranty period and published water, dust or drop protection information |
| Ownership cost | Purchase price plus the local repair costs you can verify |
Keep the source and date beside each claim. A support page can change, while a product report may describe a commitment published for a particular model and year. If the date is absent, or if a retailer’s wording conflicts with the manufacturer’s statement, treat the claim as unresolved until the model-specific terms clarify it.
Which phone should I choose?
Choose the phone whose update commitment and repair support fit your planned ownership period in your country. Based on the cited commitments, Pixel 8 and later offer Google’s seven-year OS and security promise from first US Google Store availability; Galaxy S24 has Samsung’s seven OS generations and seven years of security updates; Fairphone 5 combines eight years of software support with stated parts support until at least 2031 and ten replaceable modules.
These are not a universal ranking: their support clocks and wording differ, and the available evidence does not provide comparable repair prices or worldwide service coverage. Before paying, verify the exact model’s current local repair route and parts terms. Choose the longest useful support commitment you can confirm, but count it as valuable only if you can keep the device working through the period you plan to own it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a seven-year update promise mean seven years from the day I buy the phone?
Not necessarily. Google’s stated Pixel 8-and-later clock begins when the phone first became available on the Google Store in the US, while other commitments may use a different starting point; check the model-specific terms rather than your purchase receipt date.

Does the EU five-year update rule guarantee five years from my purchase?
No. The cited EU requirement measures the OS-upgrade period from the end of placement of the last unit on the market, not from each customer’s purchase date.
Can I use the EU parts requirements to judge repair availability outside the EU?
They describe requirements for covered products sold on the EU market, so they are not evidence of parts supply or service coverage in other countries. For another market, verify the manufacturer’s local parts and repair information.
