There is no stock-and-bond percentage that guarantees regular retirement income. Choose a mix by first measuring household spending and dependable income, then assigning investments to three jobs: accessible cash for near-term withdrawals, relatively stable assets for intermediate needs, and diversified growth assets for later years. The right balance depends on your time horizon, tolerance for losses, financial capacity, taxes, liquidity needs and goals—not your retirement age alone.
This guide is educational and U.S.-focused. Plan documents, annuity contracts and tax rules can differ and can change, so confirm current terms before acting.

What a retirement investment mix is—and what it cannot do
An investment mix, or asset allocation, is how your savings are divided among categories such as stocks, bonds and cash equivalents. The allocation determines how much of your portfolio is exposed to market growth, interest-rate and credit risk, inflation erosion, and the possibility of needing to sell after a loss.

- Social Security or another benefit that is payable under its governing rules.
- A defined-benefit pension that promises an annuity under the plan’s terms.
- Withdrawals, interest, dividends or sales from defined-contribution accounts and taxable investments.
- An annuity contract that makes periodic payments if the insurer can meet its obligations.
A defined-benefit pension can transfer longevity risk—the risk of outliving your assets—to the plan. The SEC’s Investor.gov explanation of lifetime income puts it this way: “If you have a pension plan that provides a lifetime annuity, it protects you against longevity risk, the risk of outliving your assets.” A 401(k), IRA or brokerage account generally does not make that promise; you remain exposed to investment results and the possibility of exhausting savings.
Allocation can improve the odds that assets serve their intended jobs, but it does not guarantee a return, a withdrawal amount or a lifetime income stream. Diversification can reduce concentration risk, not eliminate losses.
Start with the income gap, not a preset percentage
List spending by timing and necessity
Make a practical household spending list before selecting funds. Separate recurring essentials—housing, utilities, food, insurance, health care and taxes—from flexible expenses such as travel, gifts and upgrades. Note large, irregular costs separately, including a vehicle replacement, home repairs or a known medical expense. The point is to identify when money may be needed, not to produce a regulator-endorsed formula.
Group each expense by when it is likely to occur:
- Near term: spending expected in the next several months or few years.
- Intermediate: goals that may be several years away but still need a dependable funding source.
- Long term: spending that may continue for decades, including later-life care and the needs of a surviving spouse.
Identify income that does not require selling investments
Write down the expected amount, start date, inflation adjustment and survivor provisions for each dependable source. Read the actual pension or benefit statement rather than relying on a verbal estimate. Distinguish a contractual payment from an estimate that depends on markets, employment or a future election.
Calculate the amount the portfolio may need to supply
For each period, compare planned spending with dependable income. A shortfall is the amount that may have to come from savings, an annuity or a change in spending. Treat this comparison as a planning tool, not a promise that a particular withdrawal rate is safe. The official material used for this guide does not establish an individualized withdrawal rate or a universal spending percentage.
Include a margin for uncertainty: expenses can rise, benefits can change, and investment values can fall. If a plan works only when every estimate is met, it is fragile.
Set the two constraints that drive allocation
Time horizon
Time horizon means when the money may be needed, not simply the age at which you stop working. A household retiring at 60 may need assets for 30 years, while another household may need a large payment next year. Money needed soon has less time to recover from a market decline. Money reserved for later decades can usually tolerate more interim fluctuation, provided the household can stay invested.

Risk tolerance and risk capacity
Risk tolerance is how much volatility you can endure emotionally. Risk capacity is how much loss your finances can withstand without forcing a harmful sale or a reduction in essential spending. A person may be comfortable with stock-market swings but have low capacity because a large withdrawal is imminent; another may dislike volatility but have a pension covering essentials and a long horizon.

The SEC’s Investor.gov asset-allocation guide states that “The asset allocation that works best for you at any given point in your life will depend largely on your time horizon and your ability to tolerate risk.” Retirement age by itself therefore cannot determine an appropriate mix.
Assign each part of the portfolio a job
A useful way to design the mix is to name the job each pool must perform. The categories below are planning roles, not guarantees or required percentages.
Accessible cash for near-term spending
Cash equivalents can cover withdrawals that are expected soon and reduce the need to sell volatile holdings after a decline. Compare the yield, inflation exposure, account or fund structure and how quickly money can be accessed. Cash is not risk-free in real terms: low returns can allow inflation to erode purchasing power over a long retirement.
Bonds or other fixed-income holdings for a different risk profile
Bonds and bond funds generally have more modest return potential and lower volatility than stocks, but they can lose value. Review credit exposure, interest-rate sensitivity, duration, diversification, fees and liquidity. High-yield bonds carry higher risks than higher-quality issues. A bond fund does not preserve principal merely because its name says “income” or “short term.”
Stocks for long-term growth potential
Stocks and stock funds offer greater growth potential and greater volatility. Use them for money that can remain invested through downturns. Check concentration by company, sector and geography, along with fund fees and the time horizon for each goal. A broad label such as “equity fund” does not prove that holdings are diversified.
Keep the roles coordinated
The pools should be considered together. Holding only cash can expose a decades-long retirement to inflation; holding only stocks can make a near-term withdrawal vulnerable to a market fall. A mix that covers upcoming needs without abandoning long-term growth is usually more resilient than treating every dollar identically.
Compare the main investment choices
| Option | Potential role | What to compare | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stocks or stock funds | Long-term growth potential | Volatility, diversification, fees, concentration and time horizon | Higher volatility can make them unsuitable for money needed soon; losses are possible. |
| Bonds or bond funds | A risk/return profile different from stocks; generally more modest return and lower volatility | Credit and interest-rate exposure, duration, diversification, fees and liquidity | High-yield bonds carry higher risks, and bonds can lose value. |
| Cash equivalents | Liquidity and a near-term spending reserve | Yield, inflation exposure, deposit or fund structure and access | Lower return and inflation erosion can matter over long periods. |
| Target-date fund | A diversified portfolio with a managed allocation glide path | Holdings, “to” versus “through” glide path, risk at and after the target date, and all-in fees | Funds with the same date can differ, and the fund does not guarantee sufficient income. |
| Annuity | Contractual periodic income, potentially for life | Insurer strength, payment terms, fees and implicit costs, surrender and withdrawal rules, taxes and optional benefits | Contract obligations depend on the insurer’s claims-paying ability; access may be restricted or costly. |
Compare options on the same axes: market risk, expected role, liquidity, diversification, total costs, whether income is guaranteed or market-dependent, contract flexibility and tax treatment. No option is best for every household.
Check diversification beneath the label
Diversification applies within as well as across categories. Two funds can both be called “balanced” while owning many of the same companies. A stock fund may be concentrated in one sector; a bond fund may hold one type of issuer or a long duration; several accounts may duplicate the same holdings.

Review the actual holdings, top positions, sector and geographic exposure, credit quality, duration and expense information. Consider the combined household portfolio rather than judging each account in isolation. Diversification reduces the impact of one holding or segment performing poorly, but it cannot guarantee profit or prevent a broad-market loss.
How to evaluate a target-date fund
A target-date fund automatically changes its allocation along a glide path as the named year approaches. That automation can help an investor who wants one diversified holding, but it does not turn the fund into an income guarantee.
Compare funds that use the same year
Funds sharing a target year are not interchangeable. Compare:
- The current stock, bond and cash-equivalent exposure.
- The glide path and whether it reaches its most conservative allocation “to” the target date or continues changing “through” retirement.
- The allocation at the target date and for the years afterward.
- The underlying funds, concentration, credit exposure and geographic mix.
- Total fees, including the expenses of underlying funds where applicable.
Test the fund against your actual cash need
Ask whether the fund’s risk level fits the date on which you may need withdrawals and whether its holdings overlap with investments in other accounts. A target-date fund can provide a managed allocation, but it cannot ensure that your savings will cover your spending or that its glide path matches your circumstances.
When an annuity may fit—and what to inspect
An annuity is a contract with an insurer. Depending on the contract, it can provide periodic payments for a specified period or for life. The contractual nature differs from dividends, interest or withdrawals that depend on portfolio performance.
Verify the insurer and the payment promise
Payments depend on the insurer’s ability to meet its obligations. Review financial-strength information, the exact guarantee, payment start date, duration, inflation treatment, survivor options and what happens after the owner’s death. Do not treat an insurer rating or a sales illustration as a substitute for reading the contract.
Price the loss of flexibility
Compare the explicit fees and implicit costs, including surrender charges, withdrawal adjustments, caps, spreads, riders and optional-benefit charges. Identify the surrender period and any annual amount that can be withdrawn without a charge. Ask what happens if you need a large amount for care, a home repair or a change in plan.

Tax treatment depends on the account type and contract. A tax-deferred account, a taxable purchase and a distribution can have different consequences. Check current rules and the actual contract before buying. An annuity should complement a broader income strategy rather than be judged only by its advertised payment.

Make withdrawals and taxes part of the design
Account rules can affect which investments are practical to hold and when money can be taken. Required minimum distributions, eligibility ages and tax treatment have changed over time. FINRA’s retirement-account guidance discusses required minimum distributions, but it is not timeless tax advice. Check current IRS publications and your plan documents for the applicable year.
Before selling an investment, identify the account type, the tax basis or pre-tax status, any plan restriction, and whether the sale could create a tax bill. Coordinate withdrawals with Social Security or pension elections, health-care costs and a surviving spouse’s needs. A portfolio that looks adequate before taxes may not cover the same spending after them.
Set a rebalancing and review process
Rebalance to the intended mix
Rebalancing means bringing holdings back toward the allocation you selected after market movements change the weights. It is different from changing the allocation because your goals, risk tolerance or financial situation changed. Choose a review trigger—such as a calendar date or a material departure from the intended mix—and consider taxes and transaction costs before trading.
Change the mix only when the plan changes
Revisit the allocation when a pension starts or ends, a benefit estimate changes, a major expense appears, health circumstances alter the horizon, or a spouse’s needs change. Do not overhaul the portfolio solely because one asset category recently performed well or poorly.
Keep a written record
Document each pool’s purpose, the spending it is expected to cover, the acceptable loss, the chosen investments, fees and the next review date. A written policy makes it easier to distinguish a planned change from a reaction to headlines.
A step-by-step selection process
- Inventory resources. List account balances, pensions, Social Security estimates, annuities, debts and major future expenses.
- Map spending. Separate essential, flexible and irregular costs, and place each on a near-, intermediate- or long-term timeline.
- Find the portfolio gap. Compare each period’s spending with income that does not require selling investments. Mark where a withdrawal, annuity payment or spending adjustment may be needed.
- Set loss limits. Decide what temporary decline the household could withstand without selling assets needed for essentials.
- Assign roles. Reserve an accessible pool for near-term needs, use fixed-income holdings for a different risk/return role, and use diversified growth assets for later goals.
- Inspect diversification. Review actual holdings and overlap across accounts rather than relying on a fund name or target percentage.
- Compare implementation costs. Include fund expenses, account charges, trading costs, annuity fees, surrender charges and tax effects.
- Evaluate guarantees separately. Distinguish market-dependent income from contractual payments, and verify the insurer’s claims-paying ability for any annuity.
- Check access. Confirm how quickly money can be withdrawn, whether penalties apply and whether a market loss could occur before settlement.
- Write the review rule. Record when you will rebalance and which life or financial changes require a new allocation decision.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing a percentage because it is associated with an age
Why it fails: age does not reveal spending needs, other income, horizon or loss capacity.
Correction: start with the income gap and the timing of withdrawals, then select an allocation that the household can maintain.

Assuming a target-date fund guarantees retirement income
Why it fails: the fund manages an investment mix but does not promise that savings will last.
Correction: compare the glide path, holdings, fees and post-target-date risk with the withdrawal plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuying an annuity without pricing restrictions
Why it fails: surrender periods, withdrawal adjustments, rider costs and insurer limits can reduce flexibility.
Correction: read the contract, calculate the cost of accessing money, examine payment and survivor terms, and assess the insurer’s ability to pay.
Rebalancing by instinct
Why it fails: selling after a decline or chasing a recent winner can move the portfolio away from its purpose.
Correction: use a written trigger and distinguish rebalancing from a deliberate change in goals or risk capacity.

When individualized help is worth considering
Consider a qualified financial professional when income sources interact in complicated ways, an annuity contract is difficult to compare, taxes or required distributions are substantial, or one spouse’s death would materially change the plan. Ask how the professional is paid, what services are included, whether they have relevant credentials and how conflicts are handled. Bring statements, benefit estimates, spending records, insurance details and existing contracts so recommendations address the whole household rather than one account.
For a self-directed review, use current plan documents, the SEC’s Investor.gov investor-education material, FINRA retirement-account guidance and current IRS information. Those sources explain general rules; they do not determine an individualized allocation.
