Choose a Nifty index fund by comparing like with like: the same underlying Nifty index, the same plan type, the current total expense ratio (TER), tracking error and tracking difference over matching periods, and dated assets under management (AUM). A low TER or large AUM is useful evidence, but neither measure alone proves that a fund is the best tracker.
Start with the exposure you actually want
An index mutual fund is designed to replicate an index, not to outperform it. The first decision is therefore not the fund house or its size; it is the benchmark. A fund tracking the Nifty 50 gives different equity exposure from one tracking the Nifty Next 50. Even funds whose names look similar can follow different index variants or objectives.

Read the scheme objective and benchmark name in the latest scheme documents. Record the full index name exactly as disclosed. Do not compare a Nifty 50 fund with a Nifty Next 50 fund, or treat a broad-market index and a sector index as substitutes. Their return patterns, concentration and risk are different, so cost and tracking comparisons would not be meaningful.

Compare the same plan type
After fixing the benchmark, hold the plan type constant. Direct and regular plans belong to the same scheme family but have different costs. Their disclosures can also show separate tracking figures. Compare direct with direct and regular with regular; otherwise the cost and performance gap may simply reflect the distribution structure rather than a difference in portfolio implementation.

Direct plan
A direct plan is purchased without a distributor commission being paid from the scheme’s expense structure. Its TER is normally different from the regular plan’s TER. Use the exact direct-plan name and identification details when collecting data.
Regular plan
A regular plan is bought through a distributor or intermediary and has its own disclosed expense ratio and tracking figures. If you are evaluating a regular plan, compare it with regular plans tracking the same index and use the regular-plan disclosures throughout the exercise.
Why this control matters
A comparison that mixes plans can make a lower-cost direct plan appear to have an implementation advantage over a regular plan. It also breaks the like-for-like condition needed when interpreting tracking difference. Put the benchmark and plan in separate columns in your worksheet before recording any figures.

Understand TER before treating a fee as a bargain
TER means total expense ratio. AMFI defines it as a scheme’s operating expenses expressed as a percentage of average net asset value. Those expenses are reflected in the scheme’s NAV, so they reduce the return an investor receives relative to the underlying index, all else equal.
Use the current, dated figure
TER can change. Check the current disclosure for the exact scheme and plan on the AMC or AMFI disclosure page, and record the date on which you observed it. An old comparison table may describe a TER that no longer applies. If two sources show different figures, use the newer official disclosure and note the discrepancy until it is resolved.
How to interpret a lower TER
A lower TER is helpful when the benchmark, plan, portfolio process and other conditions are comparable. It is not proof of superior tracking. A fund with a slightly higher TER can have a smaller realized gap because of trading, cash management, securities lending, corporate actions or other implementation effects. TER is an input to the decision, not the verdict.

What TER does not tell you
- It does not identify the size of the fund’s tracking error.
- It does not show whether the fund’s realized return gap was unusually large in a particular period.
- It does not establish that a fund will maintain the same cost in the future.
Use the TER that applies to the same date and plan as the tracking disclosures you are comparing. If dates differ, state that limitation rather than presenting the numbers as contemporaneous.
Read tracking error as a measure of consistency
Tracking error and tracking difference are related but answer different questions. SEBI’s investor explanation defines tracking error as the standard deviation of the differences between a portfolio’s returns and its benchmark’s returns over a specified period.
What a low tracking error suggests
A lower tracking error indicates that the fund’s return gap has been more consistent over the measured period. It does not tell you whether that gap was close to zero or consistently negative. A fund can have a stable shortfall and therefore a low tracking error.
Check the measurement window
Tracking error is meaningful only with its period, benchmark and plan. Record the as-of date and the tenure used. Do not compare a one-year figure for one fund with a three-year figure for another, or compare figures calculated against different index variants.
Use operating history intelligently
A very new fund may have limited history, making its tracking statistics less informative than those of a fund with several comparable reporting periods. Lack of a long record is not automatically a defect, but it should affect how much confidence you place in the statistic. Note the scheme’s operating history alongside the tracking data rather than substituting age for evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse tracking difference to measure the realized gap
Tracking difference is the return gap between the scheme and its benchmark over a defined period. It tells you what investors actually experienced over that tenure, whereas tracking error describes the variability of the gap.

Choose a common tenure
AMFI-hosted scheme disclosure material describes tracking-difference reporting for one, three, five and ten years, and since allotment, with direct and regular index-fund plans disclosed separately. Use a period available for every fund in your shortlist and write down its as-of date. If only some funds have a ten-year figure, do not rank the others against that window by inference.
Interpret the sign and size
A smaller absolute tracking difference means the fund’s realized return was closer to the benchmark for that period. A negative difference indicates underperformance against the benchmark; a positive difference indicates outperformance for the measured interval, which can result from timing, income, cash balances or other implementation effects and should not be treated as a promise.
Why tracking difference and TER can disagree
TER is a recurring cost rate, while tracking difference captures the combined outcome of expenses and implementation. Portfolio turnover, transaction costs, cash held for subscriptions and redemptions, corporate actions, tax effects and the treatment of index income can all influence the realized gap. Therefore, use TER to understand the ongoing cost burden and tracking difference to see the historical result, without assuming one mechanically predicts the other.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAssess AUM as context, not a quality badge
AUM is the value of assets managed by the scheme at a stated date. It is a useful observation about scale, but it is not a stand-alone quality measure. A larger scheme is not automatically a better tracker, and the available disclosures do not establish a universal AUM threshold at which a Nifty index fund becomes preferable.
Find and date the number
Use the scheme-wise AUM or average-AUM routes listed through SEBI’s mutual-fund directory and the corresponding AMFI data. Record whether the figure is point-in-time scheme AUM or an average, and record the observation date. AUM moves with subscriptions, redemptions and market prices, so an undated number is incomplete.
What scale can help you investigate
Scale may provide context when you examine operating history, trading activity and the consistency of tracking disclosures. It can also help you identify whether a scheme has a very short or thin record. Those are questions for further review, not reasons to reject a fund solely because it is smaller.

What AUM cannot prove
- It cannot prove lower tracking error.
- It cannot prove a smaller tracking difference.
- It cannot guarantee that the current TER will remain unchanged.
- It cannot substitute for checking the exact benchmark and plan.
Build an apples-to-apples comparison table
Once you have fixed the benchmark and plan, collect the following fields for every candidate. Keeping the observation date beside each value prevents dynamic data from being presented as if it were permanent.
| Comparison axis | What to record | How to use it | Warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Benchmark | Exact Nifty index name and variant | Exclude funds with a different exposure | Similar names do not establish identical benchmarks |
| Plan | Direct or regular | Compare only the same plan type | Mixing plans distorts cost and tracking comparisons |
| Current TER | Percentage, plan and disclosure date | Prefer lower cost when other evidence is comparable | TER can change and does not prove tracking quality |
| Tracking error | Value, tenure, benchmark, plan and as-of date | Lower generally indicates a more consistent gap | It does not show whether the gap was small |
| Tracking difference | Return gap, common tenure and as-of date | Prefer a smaller absolute gap over the same period | One period cannot guarantee future results |
| AUM | Scheme-wise or average AUM and date | Use as scale and history context | No universal threshold proves quality |
| Operating history | Length of comparable disclosure record | Give more context to longer, consistent records | Age alone is not a performance measure |
A practical step-by-step selection process
- Write the intended exposure. State whether you want the Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50 or another specific Nifty index. Confirm the objective and benchmark in each scheme’s current documents.
- Filter by plan. Decide whether you are comparing direct or regular plans, then remove candidates from the opposite category.
- Capture current TER. Retrieve the exact plan’s dated TER from an official AMC or AMFI disclosure. Save the observation date with the percentage.
- Collect tracking-error figures. Note the calculation period, as-of date and benchmark. Keep only windows that can be compared across the shortlist.
- Collect tracking-difference figures. Prefer a common one-, three-, five- or ten-year period, or since allotment when that is the only comparable window. Record whether the figure is for the direct or regular plan.
- Record AUM correctly. Use official scheme-wise or average-AUM data, identify which measure you used and date it.
- Check history and missing data. Mark a short record or an unavailable tenure as a limitation rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
- Rank the evidence in order. First eliminate benchmark or plan mismatches. Then weigh current TER, comparable tracking error, comparable tracking difference and dated AUM together.
- Investigate conflicts. If the lowest-TER fund has a larger historical gap, examine the periods and disclosure dates before deciding. Do not let one attractive metric erase the others.
- Save the snapshot. Keep the source documents or page captures and the observation date so you can tell whether a later change reflects the fund or simply a new measurement period.
How to make a decision when the metrics disagree
Lowest TER, but weaker tracking difference
Ask whether the TER observations are from the same date and whether the tracking differences use the same tenure. If they are comparable, the historical gap is evidence that cost alone has not translated into closer replication. You may still prefer the lower TER, but that is a conscious trade-off rather than an automatic conclusion.
Low tracking error, but a persistent negative gap
This combination means the fund has tracked its shortfall consistently. If your priority is closeness to the index, examine the absolute tracking difference and its direction; do not treat the low error as sufficient.
Small AUM, but strong comparable tracking data
Do not reject the fund solely for size. Confirm that the history is long enough to interpret, that the AUM date is current, and that the scheme can continue to provide the disclosures you need. The evidence does not support a blanket minimum AUM rule.
Large AUM, but missing or mismatched disclosures
Scale cannot compensate for an inability to compare the benchmark, plan and measurement period. Put the fund on hold until the missing information is available or choose a candidate with clearer, current disclosures.

Comparing different Nifty indices
Problem: You treat Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 funds as interchangeable. Correction: Verify the exact benchmark in each objective before looking at costs.
Mixing direct and regular plans
Problem: You compare a direct plan’s TER with a regular plan’s tracking result. Correction: Keep plan type constant from the first row of your worksheet to the last.
Confusing tracking error with tracking difference
Problem: You read a low error as proof of a small return gap. Correction: Use tracking error for consistency and tracking difference for the realized gap over a stated tenure.

Using undated AUM
Problem: You quote a large number from an old article. Correction: Retrieve current scheme-wise or average AUM and label the date and measure.
Ranking unlike periods
Problem: You compare one fund’s one-year result with another’s five-year result. Correction: Select a common period and disclose when each figure was measured.
Assuming one period predicts the next
Problem: You treat historical tracking as a guarantee. Correction: Use the data as evidence about past implementation, not as a promise of future replication.
A reusable review checklist
- Is the exact Nifty benchmark identical across all candidates?
- Are all entries direct plans or all regular plans?
- Is every TER current, plan-specific and dated?
- Do tracking-error figures use comparable windows and the same benchmark?
- Do tracking-difference figures use the same available tenure and as-of date?
- Have you recorded whether a tracking figure is direct or regular?
- Is each AUM figure identified as scheme-wise or average and dated?
- Does each candidate have enough operating history to make its disclosures useful?
- Have you avoided using AUM or TER as a substitute for tracking evidence?
- Have you written down data gaps instead of estimating them?
When to refresh your comparison
This is a point-in-time exercise, not a permanent ranking. TER and AUM are dynamic, and tracking comparisons depend on their measurement periods. Recheck the official disclosures when you are making a new investment decision, when the scheme documents change, or when a new common tracking period becomes available. Preserve the old observation date so you can distinguish a real change from a different reporting window.
At publication or review time, use current AMC, AMFI and SEBI materials. Regulatory disclosure formats and requirements can change, so an older table should not be treated as current simply because its numbers look precise.
The decision in one sentence
Among funds tracking the same Nifty index, choose the same plan type, then favor a competitive current TER and the smallest comparable tracking difference, use tracking error to test consistency, and treat dated AUM and operating history as supporting context rather than a winner-picking rule.
